Video Transcript for Thule GateMate Pro Tailgate Pad and Bike Rack Review

Today, we're gonna be taking a look at the Thule GateMate Tailgate Pad. It's available for full size trucks with part number TH 824 PRO and compact trucks with part number TH 823 PRO. If you're looking for a truck and bike rack, go with the Thule GateMate Tailgate Pad. It lets you transport up to eight bikes in your truck bed. It's a large padded cover that straps around your tailgate and secures your bikes in the upright position with hook and loop fasteners. Here on top and towards the inside, it features some raised reinforced padding. This is what's gonna prevent our bikes from sliding along the top here and it's gonna prevent them from making contact when we're on the road.

Here you can see how the hook and loop strap is connected to our pad. It's adjustable along the top strap, so it's gonna work with a variety of bikes. Here you can see how it actually connects around our down tube. Goes around and connects back to itself. While it may be more suitable for mountain bikes, it will work with road bikes. Those frames tend to be a bit more fragile, so just be aware.

Not only is it gonna be great for carrying bikes, but it's gonna be great for carrying other things, such as your paddle boards, kayaks or any other elongated items that might stick out over your tailgate that you don't wanna get damaged. If you carry any of these things, I do recommend tying them down with a strap.I've gone ahead and removed the gears, so we can take a look at some more features. Unlike other tailgate pads, the one thing that's unique to this one, is that it has a large panel that folds down. It connects to a hook and loop fastener underneath. To make sure it remains down, not only does it reveal the handle for our tailgate, but for this particular truck, it allows us to still use our back up camera. Here on the inside of our truck bed, the pad features two large mesh storage pockets.

The flap on top is held down by hook and loop fasteners. These pockets are gonna be great for things like, extra bike tubes, bike pumps, gloves, biking shorts. Anything you can fit into them. Here at the bottom, you can see the three straps that come in under in a rounder tailgate, that hold it in place. Now, I'll show you how to get it installed.I've got my GateMate laid out on my truck bed.

Let's go ahead and take a closer look at it. I'd like to point out that the entire thing is padded, so we don't have to worry about it harming or scratching our gear or our tailgate. Here underneath, we've got a soft fabric covering our pads. This is what's gonna be coming in contact with our tail gate. So with it being soft, we don't have to worry about it harming or scratching that finish on our truck.Over time, I recommend keeping this clean, that way nothing gets stuck underneath and causes any harm. To get it installed, the easiest way I found was to go ahead and have your tailgate closed and then just drape it over the tailgate. Now, you'll wanna make sure that it's right where it needs to be, so I would recommend checking the large panel here and make sure it's centered. And make sure that you can easily open your tailgate and close it.From here, we can run our straps. Now, this is where it gets a little tricky. What I like to do, is pop the tailgate just a little bit, grab that strap. You'll wanna feed it underneath, up into your truck bed. Once you've got fed up underneath, you can either get a second set of hands to help you pull it through, or you can reach down and grab it yourself. You can do each strap individually. What we'll do is we'll run it through the buckle. And then back down through and we'll leave it loosely installed for now. We'll repeat the same process with the other two straps.Once I've got all the straps loosely installed, I'm gonna go ahead and lay it down all the way and start tightening it up. Just get it nice and secure. Make sure it remains in place, where I want it. Now, I'm gonna raise it up and then hop inside the truck bed and tighten it down the rest of the way. I like to grab the strap and then just take my palm and then push down on it. And I'll just work my way around. From here, we can just bundle up our excess and put it within the keeper here. Here on the outside, with it installed, you can see it's nice and tight. It's not going anywhere. We can go ahead and pull up our flap to cover up our handle and we'll get ready to install our bike. You want to pull up, the hook and loop strap; go ahead and undo it. Leave it open and we'll set our bike in place. I'll lift it up over my tailgate. I wanna be sure that our pedals are out of the way. We're going to rest it in place and angle my front tire. Then I'll take my strap, run it over my down tube, then back through to itself. As you can see, our fork is resting up against our pad instead of our tailgate, preventing any damage. It's important to note that the pad, over time, may cause some abrasions or wear and tear to your fork or the underside of the down tube. With one bike installed and secured, we can go ahead and repeat the same process with the other bikes. And that's gonna complete our look at the Thule GateMate Tailgate Pad.

Ask the Experts about this Thule Truck Bed Bike Racks

Do you have a question about this Truck Bed Bike Rack?

  • How to Secure Bikes in the Bed of a 2019 Honda Ridgeline without Drilling Into Truck Bed
  • If you want to avoid modifying the bed of your brand new 2019 Honda Ridgeline then I recommend going with the Hollywood Racks Truck Bed Bike Carrier # HRT970 because you can wedge some lumber in the bed of your pickup and then bolt this carrier on it (see attached photo). This comes with a 9mm quick-release skewer and is small enough that you can mount multiple bikes next to each other depending on their sizes. If you would rather keep the front wheels on your bikes then another great...

  • Best Truck Bed Bike Rack for a 2012 Honda Ridgeline
  • I actually agree with the crowd here-- The Thule Gate Mate, part # TH823PRO is probably the king of the crop for this type of bike rack. Being able to carry four bikes easily with the added side-bumpers to keep the bikes on the tailgate is the best features available for this rack. I also recommend a few extras to make your life a little easier when using this rack. First, the Thule Load straps, part # TH521 to secure the bikes together. This will let you worry less about them sliding...

  • How to Lock Thule GateMate Pro Tailgate Pad to Truck While Out on a Ride
  • I recommend using a cable lock like the 10' Cable Lock # e98891 to secure the Thule GateMate Pro Tailgate Pad # TH823PRO while you are out on your ride. The 10' length should be enough for you to thread the cable through the opening for the tailgate handle on the GateMate Pro and then down the inside portion of your handle over to a tie-down hook. If you plan on using the GateMate Pro often and would like a cable lock that you don't have to keep track of then I recommend the ToyLok Stake...

  • Which Tailgate Pad Bike Rack Fits a 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
  • The Softride Tailgate Pad, # SR26461, for mid size trucks is probably going to be the best option. It measures 54 inches long so compare that to the tailgate on your 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac to determine fit. The model for a full size truck, # SR26457, is 61 inches long. Thule also has a similar product, # TH823PRO for a 54 inch or # TH824PRO for a 62 inch. All of these items work in basically the same way. They fit over the tailgate, have a flap for the tailgate handle. They...

  • How Far Out Does the Malone Axis Truck Bed and Roof Load Extender # MPG907 Extend
  • On the Malone Axis Truck Bed and Roof Load Extender # MPG907 the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest edge on the carrier is 53 inches. So to the nearest part of the up right it will be approximately 51 inches. By my calculations your 10 foot, 5 inch kayaks will overhang the bed by 41 inches. That means if you were to slide the kayaks all the way in the upright on this carrier would still be about 10 inches away. All of the similar extenders are a bit too long...

  • Recommended Truck Bed Bike Rack for a 2015 GMC Canyon with OEM Vinyl Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
  • I have a solution for you but the Swagman # S64702, will not work with a OEM soft tonneau cover. I would instead recommend the Thule Insta-Gater Truck Bed Bike Rack # TH501 or a truck tailgate pad like the Thule # TH823PRO. Due to the mounting design of the OEM soft roll-up tonneau cover, you would not be able to mount the Swagman Bike bar. It would need to supported by a flat support on both the top and the inner side of the bed rail, see attached image, and most soft tonneaus have...

  • Will the Thule GateMate Pro Tailgate Pad and Bike Rack Really Fit a 2019 Honda Ridgeline
  • Yes, I can confirm the Thule GateMate Pro Tailgate Pad and Bike Rack part # TH823PRO is a fit for a 2019 Honda Ridgeline. In fact, we even tested the older Thule GateMate Tailgate Pad and Bike Rack on this model which was the same size and I have attached that video for you. I would be a bit caution of looking for measurements online as you never really know where they are taken. That said, I appreciate you doing your own research but there is no need to worry about this one as the Thule...

  • Truck Bed Bike Rack for a 2014 Honda Ridgeline
  • The Yakima BikerBar bike rack # Y01141 is not a fit for the 2014 Honda Ridgeline but we do have other truck bed racks that are listed as a fit. I have included a link to them for you. For 2 bikes I recommend either the Topline bike rack # UG2500 or the Thule GateMate Pro, # TH823PRO. I have linked videos for both of these racks for you.

  • How Tight Should Straps of Thule GateMate Pro be On Tailgate
  • Thule does not specify a tightness for the straps of the Thule GateMate Pro # TH823PRO on trucks like your 2019 Honda Ridgeline as that's hard to do given the nature of the strap setup but what you'll want to do is tighten them snugly by hand using your best judgment. There are two sizes for this rack though and you should make sure you don't have the larger # TH824PRO which wouldn't fit your tailgate well and might be why you'd have issues tightening it down. I attached a review video...

  • Will Swagman Patrol 2 Truck Bed Bike Rack S64701 Fit a 2018 Ram 1500 with Ram Boxes
  • The Swagman Patrol 2 Bike Rack # S64701 has an adjustable length from 49 inches to 64 inches so it will fit a 50 inch width. You would not be able to open the Ram Boxes if using this type of truck bed bike rack. And if you made it too tight it could damage the hinges on the Ram Boxes so if you choose this type of rack be very careful. Another option that you might want to consider is a tailgate pad such as the GateMate Pro # TH823PRO. These types of carriers actually work quite well...

  • Will the Softride Tailgate Pad Bicycle Transporter, # SR26461, Fit a 1994 Ford Ranger XL
  • The length of the Softride Tailgate Pad Bicycle Transporter, # SR26461, is 54 inches. If the tailgate on your 1994 Ford Ranger is at least 54 inches across then this pad will fit with no issues. If it is a little shorter, that is ok too. The pad will just be scrunched up some on the ends which is permissible. I have included a link to a video review of this pad for you. We also have the Thule version, # TH823PRO, that is also 53 inches wide. We know that it will fit a 2001 Ford Ranger...

  • What Material is On Underside of Softride Tailgate Pad Bicycle Transporter
  • The underside of the Softride Tailgate Pad Bicycle Transporter for Mid-Size Pickup Trucks # SR26461 that you referenced is made from the same vinyl material you see on the outside of the pad. For a same size tailgate pad bike rack that has a softer underside we have the Thule part # TH823PRO instead. This has a few more features as well with pockets and thicker padding on top of the tailgate. Check out the review video link I attached for more info.

  • Can the Thule Gate Mate Pro Tailgate Pad and Bike Rack be Used with Electric Bikes
  • I spoke to my contact at Thule about the Thule Gate Mate Pro Tailgate Pad and Bike Rack part # TH823PRO. They do not list a specific per bike weight capacity for the tailgate pad as the full weight of the bikes will never be placed directly onto it but you should not have any issues using it to haul your two 60 lb electric bikes. I would however use some additional straps such as the Thule Load Strap Cinch Straps part # TH521 to help support the bikes.

  • Thule or Softride Tailgate Pad Bike Rack for 2011 Ram Laramie Longhorn 1500
  • For your 2011 Ram 1500 Longhorn with the Ram Boxes Thule and Softride make tailgate pad bike racks that are a confirmed fit. For Thule you'd want the part # TH823PRO or the Softride option # SR26457. The Thule GateMate Pro has more padding on top of the tailgate so it would be the one I would recommend.
