Video Transcript for Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier with tie-downs, part number TH896. The Thule DockGlide enables you to carry up to one kayak on your factory or after market roof rack assembly, and it makes loading it up much easier as the rear points have a felt material to them, which enables you to load it from the rear and to slide it into position. This is a saddle-style carrier, and the front saddles have this lever adjustment here which will conform to the hull of your boat for a better fit. To use that, you just push this into the side as you're loading it up, and it'll go right to the shape of your boat. It comes with the tie-downs necessary to secure this to your roof rack, included with a rubber protector here to ensure that the hull of your boat won't get scratched up once it's being installed. This also has two ratcheting bow and stern tie-downs which makes securing those much easier. As I said earlier, this can carry up to one kayak with a weight capacity of 75 pounds. The maximum kayak width is going to be 36 inches, and this does have a limited lifetime warranty. The saddles grip to your crossbars by using this universal mount, and this is also called a flip-fit mount as well.

You can remove it like so, and for smaller crossbars, they'll actually flip around and secure the same way. It secures with these two handles here, and these will fit aero bars as you can see here, as well as elliptical, round, square, and most factory roof racks as well. The saddles are glass reinforced and UV resistant, and have stainless steel hardware to ensure durability. In comparing this to similar products, one that comes up is going to be the Rhino-Rack Nautic Roof Kayak Carrier with tie-downs, part number RR570. The biggest differences between these two kayak carriers, the Rhino Rack does not have any load assist, meaning it doesn't have the felt pads that this one does at the rear to help load them up. And another difference is it loads from the side, as opposed from the rear. Now that we've gone over some of the features of this, let's show you how it installs. We'll first need to assemble our saddles.

We have three of our saddles already finished. To do this, we'll move this rubber piece at the base, lining up these two holes here with these two holes. You know, see the general shape's going to match up as well. We're going to take our round Allen head bolt here and insert that into that hole there, and just start to tighten it down with our provided Allen here. With that done, I'm going to take a square bolt, put that through the top hole, push that all the way through where you can see it here. I'll take our turn knob and tighten that portion down.

Next, we'll take our universal mount and unscrew one end completely. Insert that into the closed end; this is a closed end, and an open end, and loosely tighten this back. Now we're ready to install these on a roof. Now the two portions that you're going to be doing this, as far as the cradles are concerned, you want this portion here with the felt side on it to go to the rear, while this will go towards the front. Now when mounting these, you have to figure out which side you're going to use to mount this with. Then just begin tightening it down to our bar.

You can repeat this for our other mounts. As we continue to install these into the front, we just want to make sure that they line up with our rear mounts as well. Now that we have our mounts attached to our roof rack, we can install our kayak. One of the benefits of this is being able to just load it from the rear, and pushing it up these felt pads onto our front mounts. I went ahead and removed the antenna from the rear of the vehicle just so it doesn't get in the way. Now we can start strapping it down. We'll take our strap here, the cam buckle with the rubber protector here; we'll toss it over to one side, leave this hanging like so. We'll take this end that we just tossed over, wrap it around underneath the crossbar, and then we'll take this end, toss it back over as well. Wrap this underneath the crossbar as well, and connect our ends here at the cam buckle. Get it tight. Then with the excess, tie it off, and we'll repeat this for our front bar as well. Now we'll move on to our bow and stern tie-downs. We'll first need to install our hook end to one end of our tie-down, bring it through like so, making a loop on the other side. We'll wrap it around that loop, and pull it tight. Now we can attach this end to this attachment point here, then these will attach to the handles of the bow and stern of our kayak. We'll feed our one end through, and we'll pull this through. Now we can go to our bow and stern handles. We have another strap here, and you can see that it's a loop. We'll pass it through our handle, then we'll thread it in through itself to create another loop. This is where that snap hook's going to connect to from our bow and stern tie-down. Next, we'll go underneath the vehicle and find a tow hook point where we can attach our hook to, just keeping it taut as we bring it back up. Come to our end here, we pull that tight. Then we'll tie up the excess and repeat this process for the rear. Now that we have everything tightened down, let's go ahead and show you how it looks. There you have it for the Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier with tie-downs, part number TH896.

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • Recommended Load Assist And 2 Kayak Carrier For 2017 Subaru Outback
  • For 2 Kayaks, it will be difficult to fit a load assist along with J cradles. I really like the Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs - Saddle Style - Rear Loading - Universal Mount # TH896 that replaceced the TH883 you mentioned and it may fit along with the Thule Hull-A-Port XT Kayak Carrier w/Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding - Side Loading # TH848. This is a great combination that most likely will fit, but doesn't help with all the aspects of load assist as you still need to get...

  • Can the Thule Roof Rack from a 2014 Subaru Outback be Used on a 2019 Subaru Outback
  • The Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier part # TH898 and what looks to be the Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # TH896 that you had on your 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon can still be used on your 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon assuming space permits. However, the 2014 Subaru Outback (non-sport) has raised side rails and the 2019 Subaru Outback (non-touring) has flush side rails so the mounting feet and fit kit cannot be carried over. Instead, you will need to swap these out for the...

Then you could use the rear loading Thule DockGrip part # TH896 which would work well for you. The rear pads are designed to let the kayak slide forward easily but does not use rollers.

  • Will Thule Kayak Carriers fit On Adarac Access Ladder Rack Crossbars
  • The square crossbars of the Adarac Access Ladder Racks like the part # A90190 are the same dimensions as the Thule crossbars as they are 1-1/2 inch by 1-1/2 inch. We don't carry a K-Guard as that's a South African Thule product but the Thule carriers we do carry will fit these bars. Probably the most similar setup we offer would be the Thule DockGlide part # TH896 which does fit square bars as well.

  • Comparing Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier to the Thule DockGrip Saddle Style Kayak and SUP Carrier
  • For your Thule truck rack aero bars, the Thule DockGlide # TH896 is better if you want to slide your kayak from the back and utilizes felt pads to protect your boat and ease loading. I've attached a video to assist. The contrast is the Thule DockGrip # TH895 which has rear feet that grip. This is helpful for Stand Up Paddleboard use as well. I've attached that video for you to see the contrast. I recommend the Thule DockGlide for Kayak applications as the preferred easier product.

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for Carrying Kayak on 2018 Ford F-150 with Cap
  • There would most likely be a way to piece together a single crossbar for the roof of your truck and one for the cap but it most likely won't work out like you would like it to. The bar heights would be at different heights which means the kayaks might be held at a less than ideal angle and since you want to use a dock glide system that loads from the rear it would be really hard to get the kayak onto the back load bar. Best option is crossbars for the cap like the Thule TracRac CapRac...

This roof rack has a 165-lb weight capacity but you need to make sure you do not exceed the roof weight capacity of your vehicle. • The Thule # TH896 Dock Glide will fit on round, square or elliptical crossbars up to 3-5/8 inches wide by 1-1/4 inches tall. If your Outback's crossbars meet that parameter, they'll work great for you. The kit includes the straps and tie downs. I'd also recommend the Thule Quick Loops, part # TH530. The Quick Loops can be shut into the hood and rear hatch, and will provide a tie-off spot for the tie downs without scratching the vehicle. I've linked you to a video showing how they work.
