Video Transcript for SportRack Canoe Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Sport Rack canoe carrier with the foam blocks, part number SR5528. We can go ahead and open up the bag it all comes in just to see what different parts that we have. They're going to provide us with 4 foam blocks. Now these are designed to fit square, round, elliptical, and most factory roof rack systems simply just by cutting out this insert there. This also installs on naked roofs. We have 4 foam blocks, it's also going to come with all the tie downs that we need as well as the S hooks to attach to the ends of the tie downs. Now we're ready to place the foam blocks onto our canoe and get ready to get it up onto our roof.

One of the things that I found helpful is to actually lay the canoe next to your vehicle. That way you can point out where the center of the canoe is in line with the center of the vehicle to make sure that your weight is going to be distributed evenly. Then we can also place on the pads in the correct locations. When we mount the pads to the front of the canoe, we want to make sure that the pads are going to sit really close to the front windshield. With it laid out beside the car you can stand by the front windshield, and I can know that my pads are going to go in this portion here. We know to come down here.

The pads actually go onto the side rail here of the canoe, and they just fit over just like that. We're going to do this on both sides. Once we have the ones on the front, then we can go ahead and install the ones on the back. When installing the rear pads, we want to make sure that we're close to the back window, or in our case today just the back windshield. This is designed to fit all types of different vehicles, so whether you have a truck ...

it's going to work best without a camper shell . Small SUV, large SUV, a coupe, a sedan, it's really going to fit anything. Again we're going to line it up and place our pads on, and with those installed we're ready to lift our canoe up onto our vehicle. Now on our vehicle we do have an antenna back here. You just want to be able to move anything that's going to make contact with our canoe. In some cases a shorter antenna may sit well inside the canoe, but just to be safe we're going to go ahead and unscrew the rear antenna and place this somewhere that we're not going to lose it. We're going to grab an extra set of hands to place the canoe up onto the naked roof of our vehicle.

You do want to use caution when doing this because depending on the weight of your canoe, it could actually cause some indentions to happen on your roof. We just want to show you what it looks like on top of a naked roof. Now we're going to install a roof rack and actually mount it to that system. Now we are going to have to readjust the pads to make sure that they're going to fit. All right, now we're ready to attach our straps and give everything a final secure check. Now we're going to take the blue strap with the scratch-resistant cover on it. We're going to place that over top of the center of the canoe so we can just toss the strap to the other side. We need to open up both the rear doors and that strap is actually going to run through our vehicle. All right, with it through we're going through the cam buckle and then we can just go ahead and pull it secure making sure we get a nice snug fit. Now I'm going to take the spotted rope and one of our S hooks. Just start it through the smaller portion. It's kind of pinched together at the end. What we're looking to do here is just tie it off and create a nice secure knot. We're going to run that through here, and then we're going to attach the rope to each side of our vehicle here at the front to distribute a secure weight. With that connection made we can go ahead and tie everything off. Inaudible 00:03:43 vehicle we have the other hook attached so we go ahead and find a nice sized surface to mount it to. Now that we have that connection made we can just go ahead and tie everything off. Now we'll take it out and show you what it looks like in action. That's going to do it for today's review of the Sport Rack canoe carrier with tie downs and the foam block style, part number SR5528. .

I purchased this item to transport a 32' aluminum extension ladder on my 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan without a roof rack. This kit is well made and has very good straps and tie-downs and the foam block feet are very stable on the roof. I needed another person to place the ladder (70 lbs.) on the van's roof and it worked great. 429830

We used the canoe carrier on our Prius to take our canoe to a lake yesterday. It slipped when we were hit by a strong cross wind, but after picking up the two pads that landed on the road and cinching the bow and stern ropes tighter we were able to continue. Now we have a better idea of how to do it correctly, and will be able to make longer trips. 261939

  • How to Carry a Canoe on a 2013 Toyota Prius with a Bare Roof
If your Prius has a bare roof then the only option for carrying a canoe would be a foam block carrier like # SR5528. Otherwise you would have to install a roof rack. We have different roof rack fits for the different 2013 Prius models: Prius, Prius c, Prius plug-in, and Prius V. I want to make the right recommendation so if you are interested in a roof rack please let me know the specific model.

  • Roof Rack and Carrier to Transport 110-lb Canoe on 2014 Ford F-150 Super Crew Cab
If you have a slide-in truck bed camper on your 2013 Ford F-150 you'll need to use a combination of rooftop canoe carrier and front-mounted hitch and load support to hold your 110-lb 15-foot canoe. The good news is that you do not have to install a roof rack on the truck cab, just a handy, low-cost and lightweight foam block canoe carrier like # SR5528 from SportRack. The foam carrier will support one end of the canoe while the front-mounted hitch and load support will support the other...

  • Recommended Canoe Carrier for 2012 Subaru Outback with Factory Crossbars
For the factory crossbars on your 2012 Subaru Outback, I would recommend the SportRack Foam Block Rooftop Canoe Carrier, part # SR5528. The foam blocks used to support the canoe can be mounted to the crossbars, or can be placed directly on the roof surface. The kit includes the foam blocks, tie down straps and the bow and stern lines used to secure the canoe to the front and rear of the vehicle. If you decide to use the foam blocks directly on the vehicle roof, be sure the blocks and...

  • How to Carry a Canoe on the Naked Roof of a 2013 Toyota Prius V
The Yakima foam blocks Y04056 could be a good option for a naked roof 2013 Toyota Prius V. But I recommend the SportRack foam blocks # SR5528 since they are less expensive and because Yakima has stopped making the foam blocks. To attach it to a vehicle with a naked roof you would first make sure the bottoms of the pads and the roof are clean. Then you would set the canoe down next to the vehicle so that it over hangs the front and rear of the roof evenly. Next you will place the blocks...

  • Can a Canoe be Carried on a Rhino-Rack Roof Basket on a 2012 Toyota 4Runner
You could carry a canoe on the Rhino-Rack basket # RMCB02 but I recommend adapting some foam blocks # SR5528 to protect the canoe and the basket. Also you will need to make sure that the combined weight of the canoe and the basket does not exceed the roof rack capacity or the vehicle roof weight carrying capacity, which ever is lower. Consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Toyota for the roof capacity on your 2012 Toyota 4Runner. Ideally, though, you would remove the basket and put...

  • How to Attach Vehicle Anchor Straps on a 2011 Kia Soul to Secure a Canoe
The vehicle anchor straps can be mounted using some existing locations under the hood of your 2011 Kia Soul or you could use your own hardware. If your factory bars are not round or square, you can use foam pads like the SportRack Canoe Carrier # SR5528 to protect your crossbars and help keep your canoe secure. The four rack feet bolt permanently to your roof using included hardware. I recommend using a silicone sealant like # LT37464 during the installation to prevent any water from entering the camper. • Canoe Carrier Recommendation for a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Roof Rack
To carry a canoe on your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I recommend a simple carrier like the SportRack foam blocks, # SR5528. The blocks fit on your crossbars and the canoe rests upside down in the grooves in each block. Use the included strap and rope to tie down the bow and stern. If you have a 2 inch trailer hitch on the vehicle, I recommend adding a Goal Post, # TH997, which will help with stability and weight carrying of the canoe. Some additional foam blocks, like # SR5528 may be needed.

  • Carrying Canoe Level on 2016 Chevy Silverado with Leer 180 Camper Shell with Rear Incline
It would actually be better to have the canoe either all on the camper shell or all on the cab of the truck. When a load is split between the 2 it could result in problems because the truck bed can move some independently from the cab. The artificial rain gutters can be installed anywhere that you are willing to drill into. I do not recommend it on a 2016 Chevy Silverado because who wants to drill holes in the cab of a new truck! The Darby # DTA944 Darby Extend-A-Truck Hitch Mounted Load Extender and the # DTA968 Turbo-Rack would be a good choice for you for transporting your canoe. Canoes typically weigh less than 100 lbs, and the roof portion of the truck would only be bearing 1/2 the weight of the canoe. Your roof should handle it with no problem whatsoever. I'd also recommend a canoe carrier kit, like part # SR5528. The kit contains foam blocks that will fit around the crossbars to protect the canoe from damage....
