Video Transcript for SportRack Saddle Style Kayak Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the SportRack saddle-style rooftop kayak carrier, part number SR5512. This kayak carrier has a carrying capacity of one kayak and fits most crossbars that are round, square, arrow, elliptical and most factory crossbars. This SportRack cradle-style kayak rack has unique mounting hardware that's pretty much mountable to any crossbars type. They also can move back and forth which is going to accommodate different hull-sized kayaks. You can also see this nice rubber pad here on the top side of the cradle, and what that's going to do is that's just going to provide more protection and help prevent your kayak from slipping. Now we'll go ahead and show you how to install it. We'll get a quick rundown of how the hardware is going to go on the saddle.

All of the saddles are different. You can see that the backside of this saddle is taller than the front side of the saddle. For example, you want it to accommodate the hull of the kayak so you want the slanted angle to go in towards the center of your roof. How this hardware interacts with the saddle is we have this u-bolt here which is going to go up around the bottom side of your crossbar. Then it's going to go up through the pre-drilled holes here at the bottom of the saddle. Now that that's done, we'll take the black wing nuts which we're just going to thread down onto that u-bolt.

Then when we tighten those down, that's what's going to secure the saddle to the crossbar. Now that we kind of went over a little bit how it works, we're ready to install it to the vehicle. Up here at the roof of the vehicle, the first thing we're going to need to do is just make sure that the angle of our saddle is going inward again to accommodate the hull of the kayak. Then we'll take the u-bolt to go around the crossbar and we'll take our black wing nut thread down onto the u-bolt and then we're just going to tighten them down loosely. That way we can adjust to fit the width of the kayak. Since this saddle is for the opposite side, I'm just going to push this back on the crossbar so that we can install our other saddle. Then we'll just go ahead and repeat the same process for the rear set of cradles.

With our carrier installed, we'll go ahead and load up a kayak. You want to make sure that the bottom side of the kayak contours to the slope of the cradle correctly and that it is centered. What we'll do is just make any adjustments that we need to. Now that we have our cradles adjusted to fit the width of the kayak, we'll go ahead and finish tightening down the black wing nuts which is going to secure the cradles in place. Now with our kayak in place, we're going to go ahead and use the black flat strap with the silver cam buckle which is going to go around the kayak and our crossbars which is going to secure the kayak to the vehicle. When you're running the strap underneath the vehicle, you want to make sure that they go around the crossbar and not the saddle.

Throw the strap over the vehicle. Now over here at the other side of the vehicle, we'll bring the strap around the under side of the bar and then insert the strap into the silver cam buckle. Now we're just going to leave it loose at this time because we don't want to tighten it down all the way and make the majority of the pressure on the front bar. Then we'll just go ahead and secure the other strap. Now we've got both straps in place, we'll just go ahead and tighten them down a little bit at each time so that the weight is evenly distributed. Now what we'll do is just go ahead and secure the excess strap. With that done, we're ready to install our bow and stern straps. Before we install our bow and stern straps to the bow and stern of our kayak, we need to secure the hook to the included rope. I'm going to tie a fisherman's knot here so you'll thread one end of the rope through the eye hole of the hook. Pull it up like this. You'll twist it maybe about three or four times and insert the remaining end here into this loop here of the rope. And you have your two ends. You'll pull it tight a little bit. Pull down on the hook. Everything will just cinch together. Then you'll just repeat the same process for the other strap. Then we'll just go ahead and take the hook end of our strap and loop it around the front of our kayak. We'll bring the strap down and find a sturdy connection point underneath the vehicle. When you're under the vehicle looking for a sturdy point to secure it to, you want to make sure you keep the strap away from any moving components or any components that are hot. Then we'll go ahead and repeat the same process for the back side. Now with our kayak all loaded up, we'll go ahead and take it out on our test course to show you how it performs. That will complete today's review of the SportRack saddle-style rooftop kayak carrier, part number SR5512. .

  • Recommended Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier for a 2007 Buick LaCrosse
  • In order to carry a kayak on your 2007 Buick LaCrosse you will first need to start off with a roof rack for which I recommend using the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack part # SR1002 because it is a great, easy to use, price-point option for you. Then, in order to secure your kayak you can use the SportRack Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # SR5512 or the SportRack Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # SR5511, whichever you prefer. If you have multiple kayaks though you would want to go with...

  • Saddle Style Kayak Carrier for Hobie Pro Angler Kayak
  • First, I recommend checking the weight capacity of your vehicle's roof as well as the weight capacity of the crossbars on your roof. Most vehicle roofs do not have a very high weight capacity. This information will likely be located in your owner's manual. The weight capacity of a roof rack will vary by manufacturer as well as make and model of vehicle. I spoke with my contact at SportRack about using the Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs # SR5512 for your Hobie Pro Angler. Though most saddle...

  • Cost-Effective Recommendations to Carry 1 Kayak and 2 Bikes with a 2017 Subaru Impreza Sedan
  • I checked out the OEM roof rack for your 2017 Subaru Impreza that you inquired about and it doesn't quite look like any of the roof racks that we have to offer. Typically OEM roof racks will get the job done, but going with a brand like Thule or Yakima will last much longer due to the quality of the work. With that being said, the most cost effective roof rack that we currently have to offer for your Impreza is the Inno square bar roof rack which consists of the Crossbars # INB127, Inno...

  • Foam Block and Saddle Style Roof Rack Kayak Carrier Recommendations for a 2007 Toyota 4Runner
  • If you decide on foam blocks with tie downs the SportRack Foam-Block-Style Kayak Carrier, # SR5525, would work great on your 2007 Toyota 4Runner. This system includes basic tie downs for the front and back of the kayak. I would recommend adding attachment points like the Thule Hood Loops, # TH529 to secure the front and rear tie downs. You may also want to check out the Thule Quick Draw Ratchet-Rope Tie Down System, # TH855XT. This system makes tying down the bow and stern much easier...

  • How to Carry a Kayak on a 2009 Nissan Sentra
  • To carry a kayak on the roof of your 2009 Nissan Sentra you would start with a roof rack like # SR1002. Then you would add a kayak carrier like # SR5512. The saddles will protect the kayak from damage from the roof rack. The less expensive option is to use a foam block set up like # SR5525. You place the foam blocks on your bare roof then grab a buddy to set the kayak on them. Next use the include blue straps to go over the kayak, Open the doors on the vehicle and run the straps through...

  • Saddle Style Kayak Carrier that is Easier to Load from Rear than Sportrack 3 SR5512
  • For a rear loading application the better choice for a saddle style kayak carrier similar to the Sportrack you mentions is the Rhino Rack part # RR571. The rear saddles have felt on them which allows the kayak to easily slide forward into position. The rear saddles of the Sportrack would be more challenging to slide on so it wouldn't be your best choice. I attached a review video for this carrier for more info on it as well.

  • Kayak Carrier for a SportRack Frontier Roof Rack on a 1996 Volkswagen Passat
  • Yes, there are kayak carriers for the SportRack roof racks like # SR1002. You can use the J-Style carrier # SR5511. It clamps on the square bars and holds 1 kayak on its side. You can also use the saddle style carrier # SR5512 that holds 1 kayak on hull. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Volkswagen to determine the roof capacity before loading anything on the roof.

  • Recommendation for a Kayak Carrier to Fit the Factory Crossbars of a 2008 Nissan Pathfinder
  • The SportRack Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs, # SR5512, will fit the factory crossbars on your 2008 Nissan Pathfinder. The kayak carrier uses an U-bolt designed universal mount that fits most crossbars. The carrier also includes straps to help further secure your kayak to your vehicle. The SportRack Kayak Carrier does require a minimum crossbar distance of 24 inches. To find if your factory crossbars meets this requirement, you will need to measure the distance between your crossbars...
