Video Transcript for SportRack Watersport Carriers Review - 2015 Volkswagen Passat

Today on our 2015 Volkswagen Passat, we're test fitting the SportRack kayak carrier, your J style kayak carrier that come with your straps here. The part number for that is SR5511. The first thing we're going to do is unstrap our kayak and take that off. We'll come up here to our body straps here. We're just going to do the excess that we have strapped in and we'll go ahead and release that. Now, if we take a look at how the kayak is strapped down, we've got the strap underneath this crossbar here, over the kayak, around the back and it's under the J-hook in the back and then back over the top of the kayak.

We'll go ahead and just pull that out. I found that style of strapping it down is the best way to make sure your kayak is secure to your vehicle. We'll just go ahead and do the same thing on this back strap. Now, we also have our balance balance surgeon 01:13 cables right upfront here. We're just going to release this excess again. Now, we've got it strapped through the strap here, or connected through the strap there.

Then we also have it securely hooked underneath our vehicle in the the front here. Same in the back, you just find a secure spot that you can on your vehicle. This would tighten that down. Go ahead and release the back here. Now, with all of our straps out of the way, we'll go ahead and take our kayak off. Now you can take a look at our J-hooks.

We've got a metal plate here on the center. That's what's going to hold that J-hook to the crossbar here. We also got thumb screws that you can tighten and loosen by turning one way or the other. Now, there is this slit here in that metal plate, that's going to allow you to loosen up your thumb screw here just a little bit and allow you to pull that kayak carrier right off without having to take off any parts and set those aside and possibly lose them. It's going to be the same style here in the back.

If you look at the hooks here, we've got great cushioning on the bars so that's going to protect your kayak whenever you have it loaded up and are driving down the road. That's going to be our completed look at the SportRack kayak carrier and how it works on our 2015 Volkswagen Passat.

I use it at least once per month. Mounting and de-mounting is super fast and you don't need any tools. I am still afraid that our kayaks will fly away one day so I used three fixing ropes for each kayak and they perfectly fits to the carriers. They don't move at all even if driving over 80 MPH. I would definitely recommend it. 484335

Perfect, and very Secure! I live in the Florida Keys and use these J Racks to transport a 12 Kayak, on my Toyota Corolla, over the many windy bridges, as we travel to our favorite launch site. Also the customer service from etrailer is Top Notch! Keep up the Great Work, you have earned a customer for life! 466470

I have found the roof rack/kayak rack equipment that i purchased last year to be quite satisfactory and worth the purchase price. The problem was when we tried to tie on a paddle board. I realize the rack was not designed specifically for a SUP so it was not necessarily the fault of the rack. Otherwise i am happy with my purchase. 429368

Fit my Thule perfectly, bought two pair for our 10' kayaks. I strap them down with ratcheting tie downs and they do a great job. I would absolutely buy them again, especially at such a good price. Quality is excellent. 421251

Good value for the price. I did need to get the "adaptor bolts" (they are longer than the ones shipped with the product) to fit my older (thicker) rack bars on my truck. I carry the kayak only when going to paddle, I don't leave them mounted all the time. Easy to install and they hold the boats. 414249

Unfortunately this rack did not fit correctly on my 2015 Nissan Pathfinder. The factory rack slopes ups towards the front of the car. This makes the racks crooked. There doesn't seem to be any way to adjust the angle of them. I also noticed that since the rack doesn't fold down, I can not put the pathfinder in the garage with the racks attached. The rack looks like a quality product and attaches easily. I put 1 star because it didn't work for me 263926

I hesitated buying a rack for my Buick because I didn't think a clamp style would be strong enough. I was wrong and this rack has really improved my life and hobby of kayaking. I can slap 2 kayaks up in no time and hit the water for a few hours of fun. Great product and built like a tank! 254895

Overall a great product. The main issue I had was that the M6 - 65mm bolts need to be a little bit longer. The current size makes it difficult to get the thread started with the holding bolts. This may only be an issue with these J-style arms and the roof rack I'm using (Rhino Rack RSP15). 225397

I found that while loading and adjusting the kayacks in the the racks they tends to move on round bars. I tightend them with pliers and they still tend to move. I will find a way to fix them Maybe with 2 screws through the hole front and back of the sport rack into the round bars. 49455

Ask the Experts about this SportRack Watersport Carriers

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • Recommended Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier for a 2007 Buick LaCrosse
  • In order to carry a kayak on your 2007 Buick LaCrosse you will first need to start off with a roof rack for which I recommend using the SportRack Semi-Custom Roof Rack part # SR1002 because it is a great, easy to use, price-point option for you. Then, in order to secure your kayak you can use the SportRack Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # SR5512 or the SportRack Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # SR5511, whichever you prefer. If you have multiple kayaks though you would want to go with...

  • Both of the SportRack J-style rack-mount kayak carriers we offer are shown on the linked page. These two carriers, # SR5511 and # SR5513, both fit most shapes of roof rack crossbars, including aero-style bars such as the Rhino-Rack Vortex bars like # RRVA180B.

  • Kayak Carrier Options for 2013 Honda CR-V Towed Behind a Motor Home
  • First, double-check your CR-V owner's manual to make sure your two kayaks' combined weight does not exceed the vehicle's roof weight-bearing capacity. Once you know it can handle the weight of your two 10-foot kayaks you have several options for carriers. By far the most economical option is to use foam block type kayak carriers, such as those shown on the link at right. These do not require a roof rack (but are still compatible with some) and they offer a great combination of low cost...

With your style of roof the Thule # TH460R, and # THKIT3118 is a confirmed custom fit for your 2015 Honda CR-V. Add either WingBar # TH711200 for silver or # TH711220 for black to complete the system. This will give you a good base for your kayak carrier to sit on. You should have enough clearance to tighten the thumbscrews to your roof rack as this rack is confirmed to fit your vehicle. This kayak carrier would be my recommendation for your Subaru Outback. It is required to tie down the bow and stern when carrying a kayak on top of a vehicle. • It is possible that you will be able to carry 3 kayaks on the roof of your 2016 Subaru Outback, but it will depend on the length of the crossbars on your vehicle and the depth of your kayaks. The SportRack Kayak Carrier # SR5511 you referenced is a good, economical solution to carry the kayaks on the roof. J-style carriers typically take up approximately 17-1/2 inches of space.
