Video Transcript for Malone Crossbar Rack Pads Review

Randy: Hey, guys. Randy here at Today, we're going to be taking a look at a couple of the Malone rack pads. These are essentially going to be nice thick pads. These are 18 inches wide, so perfectly suited for surf boards, that are going to wrap around your crossbars and you can see they give us a lot of padding here. Rather than just putting our surf board directly on top of our crossbars or putting lumber or a paddleboard up there, we can offer some protection for the item that we're carrying, but also for our cross bars.

A lot of times when you put items up there and push them back and forth, you'll cause scratchings and things like that to our cross bars. It's just not something that you really want. Now, the material itself feels really nice and durable. The pad is nice and thick. I don't think it's something that's really going to wear out very quickly. We're going to have a couple of connection points on each end.

Just use some elastic there and a keeper on the middle. In the middle here, we're going to have some hook and loop. That'll install really easily, which you'll see when we take care of that later. The only thing we really recommend getting are some straps to get everything held down. The best thing we we're able to find we're just kayak carrier straps. Basically, they're going to have some type of protection on them to keep you from damaging if you're going to be using this with like a surfboard or a paddleboard.

If you're hauling lumber, you don't care what you strap it down with. But for these, I think the etrailer straps that we're using today, they do a great job neoprene projector around the buckle, just to try to save that finish on your board, so that really be all you'd need to add. Of course, you'll need a roof rack system, but you already know that if you're looking at these. But it can provide a really nice easy way for us to get our board where we want it.Another option, very similar to this, is going to be from INNO, it's what we have here. As far as getting the job done.

I think both of them are going to do a good job. You see this one uses this hook and loop on each end, so we could sense that down a little tighter, but I don't have any problem with the way this attaches the coding or these. The covering here I think is a little bit higher quality. It has a little bit of a rubberized texture to it. But strapped down properly, things aren't really going to move. The thing I don't like about this one that I do like about the Malone, just that the padding isn't nearly as thick. I don't think it's going to give you quite as much protection as what you're going to get from the Malone. While this is a very good option, if I had to pick between the two, I think the Malone would be the one I'd go for.Another thing I like about the pad style like this is that really they can fit on any type of cross bar, whether it's the elliptical or arrow like we have here, round, square, and even most factory roof rack systems, you're not going to have any problems with getting that around it.The beginner installation, of course, we'll want to grab our pad here. You'll need your crossbars already installed if they're not already. See, we've got a couple of keepers. One's going to be and loop there in the middle, and on each end we're going to have the elastic strap with the little push fastener. I'm going to take that off and we're going to spread this out to where it rest around our bar. This is a brand new set so I figured it would be a little bit snug for now, but I imagine once these are around your bar for a little while, they're going to conform. Like we said, they're made to fit just about any type of crossbar.Pull that hook and loop tight. I like to do that one first, that allows me to kind of position a little bit here. Bring these down, line them up. We'll put on our keeper. Slide that up and underneath and we just do the same thing on the other side there. All right. Just slide them, get it lined up with the one in the back, which we've already got on. Now once we have our pads in place, of course we're going to lay our board up on top, then we'll grab our straps and get it strapped down.So overall, I like these. If I we're a surfing guy and I needed to get my board out there, rather than shoving it inside of the car and getting dirt and stuff like that, sand inside, I like putting them on the outside. I think this is a really nice cost effective way to do it. Overall, I'm impressed with them. Definitely like them better than the INNO for their thickness factor in their protection factor. I would definitely go with these. I think you'd be happy to have them and it'll get the job done for you, for sure.

So far no issues with product fading or breaking down

Bought these to replace my Yakima 20” round bar pads. The padding in the Malone pad is not as dense (inferior padding) as the Yakima pad, so I installed the Yakima padding in the fabric sleeve of the Malone pad to make it work. Sleeves aren’t as robust as the Yakima sleeves, but hard to find anything that last these days.

Easy to install and does a great job of holding item in place. Item does not move around.

I received the cross bar supports and am pleased with my purchase. Although I'm sure they will make the surfboard rental company happy, my primary reason for purchasing was to protect the crossbars on my new SUV. I use the crossbars on past vehicles for loading anything too large to fit inside (lumber, party tents, etc.) and found the crossbars got really scratched up and look bad, and were also quite slippery and allowed what ever it was to shift on turns. These pads should prevent that, oh and will protect what ever I'm carrying from damage from the bars as well. Would have given them 5 starts but have not had them long enough to test fully and understand how they will hold up to sun and rain.

We used this to cover the worn cushion on our kayak rack. Works great and is removable so that we can take it in from the winter weather!

They have been left out in the weather all summer and are still holding up well after a year!

Great rack pads with secure attachments. They do deform over time after hauling a 100 lb kayak.

Works great on my Rola racks for my kay aks
