Video Transcript for Darby Hitch Cargo Carrier - Load Extender - DTA944 Review

Today we're going to review part number DTA944. This is the Darby extended truck hitch mounted load extender for your roof or your truck bed. This part will mount to existing two inch trailer hitch receiver. The adjustable design of this will allow for use with different size vehicles. It extends for use with roof rack or a truck bed loads. This part is constructed of a heavy powder coated steel for durability,.

It installs and removes in seconds and it secures with a standard pin and clip. The top part here is 4 foot wide to support and secure the load. Again this does work on a two inch by two inch trailer hitch. I have an example here of it inserted into a two inch trailer hitch. It does have a 350 pound load capacity.

It does include the pins to secure the extend a truck. Another part that is included is this red safety flag to alert drivers of your extended load. Now I have it installed in for a roof load. Basically it will extend out from your hitch pin hole 9 1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole when used as a roof rack extension. The vertical adjustment, I have it at the lowest setting right now, which is 53 3/8 inches.

If you take the pin out and want to raise it the very top highest position would make it 60 3/8 inches. Now what Im also going to do is show you how to convert this for a truck bed load. Basically you can just take this top part and we'll sit this down and then you'll want to remove the pin and clip that holds it in. slide it out of the two inch receiver. Now you turn the long part and stick it in there.

Then we'll put the pin and clip back in. that's bringing it down to your truck bed height. Then you'll be able to insert this into the, for a truck bed. Now that will extend it out from your hitch pin hole 49 inches horizontally for hauling with your truck bed. It will also have the adjustments like we mentioned the other way. The lowest it would measure at 13 3/8 inches. The highest will be 20 3/8 inches for bed height. That should do it for review on part number DTA944.

The rack fulfilled all expectations, was concerned about how it might affect vehicle stability, HANDLED GREAT !! I would suggest that the manufacturer add 2 more tie down eyes to the longer extention section, for convenience. Again, very satisfied. 296270

The "Truck Extension" (mfgr's name for it) arrived today, in excellent condition. It's heavy - as it needs to be - & appears well-built. Both pins needed to use it were included, as shown in the product photo. It will be used on a F-150 Crew Cab (only a 5-1/2' bed) to haul longer lumber. The cross-bar is just enough over 10 feet out on my truck that I may drill another mount hole to move it in when needed. The welded loops on the cross-bar are spaced just about right to stabilize 4-foot wide sheets. A not-so-obvious nice feature: disassembled, the long bar slides inside the cross-bar, making it convenient to store and to haul when not in use. 268319

Great extender but take note I bought this to use with a canoe in the bed. It works great for that - strong, easy to load, I love it for what it does. Very worth the money. One thing to note about the description, though, is that the L piece does NOT fit in the cab of my truck. It's too long to fit behind the seat in my 2008 Tacoma Access cab. Other than that I love the thing. 3071

The 4ft extension is .100" thick and the "T" piece is .080". The extension slides into the "T" for easy storage. Hitch extensions in general probably should angle up from the hitch to the "T" for more clearance. Since I only need a 2ft. extension for hauling a kayak, I will shorten mine and drill two new holes for the hitch pin. Overall, it's a quality design. With a piece of plywood on it, the extension could double as a work table. 282652

Great product and easy to use - installs in a few minutes. Only two pieces to the rack so I can store it out of the way under the back seat of my truck when not in use. I would recommend getting the pad that is custom made to go with the rack to keep your canoe or kayak cushioned when on the rack. The width of the rack allows you to fit two kayaks side by side which was a big plus for me. 151961

I’ve only just received this item so I can not give an opinion on functionality but it feels like a solid piece of equipment. I love that it can be disassembled for easy storage. It arrived on time. My only disappointment was that it did not contain a safety flag that it was supposed to come with. Aside from that, I would definitely still purchase this extender regardless. I have a short bed Dakota that Keeps me from starting any projects due to limited truck bed space for towing wood longer than 8 ft. I would buy from this company again. Blake 448455

The Darby Extend a Truck comes just as advertised and is perfect for my kayak and surfboards. The hitch mount is a little loose, but tying it down well is no problem. etrailer customer service is excellent and they ship fast. The same item can be found at a lower price however. 12433

Got this to use on a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK to carry a kayak. I wasn't sure if it would clear the 32" spare tire on the Willys model but it does. When not in use it stores away real easy also. 490888

I haven't used it yet, but the Darby Extend-a-truck Hitch-Mounted Load Extender was super easy to attach, adjust, and remove from my truck. I expect to use it in the low position, but I like that it can be mounted to support a roof-top load, as well. I am a petite woman who needs to be able to manage a canoe by myself, and being able to carry my canoe in the truck bed instead of trying to wrangle it onto the roof will make all the difference for me. 400727

My problem was how to transport securely my 16' kayak in the 6.5' bed of my Toyota Tundra. Tne Darby "Extend-A-Truck" concept appealed to me and since the price was very reasonable, it was Made in USA and shipping paid, I bought one and it has proven to be "just what I needed". My kayak loads easily, is safe when mounted (I taped a 4' length of foam pipe insulation over the Extend-A-Truck" crosspiece to protect the hull) and is very secure in transit. I am very glad I bought this product. 159075

I’m giving this product a 4 Star rating. The reasons are this. Very wobbly in the hitch! Being a professional retired welder this piece is well made. I was looking at the kayak carrier kit 240.00, and decided to purchase parts separately , including extra foam pad(184.00) total for all. What you do not get are the tie down straps for kayak. You can purchase a lot of straps for 56.00 bucks. I intend to modify so I can easily adapt to my RV trailer hitch by pulling one hitch pin. Overall this is a really good product and I could not purchase material and build it any cheaper or better. 552139

- DTA944
by:

I received the load extender in the 3-day window promised (which I paid for) and it has the features that I think will work fine. The square tubing construction is substantial enough and fits my Class 3 trailer hitch nicely. I recently sold my 10 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee and replaced it with a smaller SUV with way better gas mileage and generally lower cost of ownership. But one big feature that I missed from the Jeep was the ability to slap small loads of lumber and sheet goods on the roof rack. My SUV's rack is too small. This extender effectively enlarges my carrying capacity and, while I have not yet used it due to a stretch of wet weather, I suspect it will only take a couple of minutes to mount and secure when needed. I think perhaps for the money a couple of tie-downs could have been included but overall this will do the job. 61661

Delivery was fast and the product is as expected. This is great for my short bed truck with a hard cover. I carry a large tool box in the bed and other materials; I can use this to pick up lumber without have to empty the bed. For really long pieces, I can use it in conjunction with the roof luggage carrier. I can use bed high or hard cover high. Excellent product. 242634

As anticipated, good price, good condition, on time. Thanks, looking forward to using it to tote the kayaks around. 235289

The extendatruck hitch is a helpful piece of equipment - solidly constructed and very easy to install. Note you do need to guy it down to the truck with ropes when using in the top-carrier position or it will rattle like crazy - I would not want to be traveling anywhere unless the unit's crossbars were tied. That said, I used it to carry a heavy fishing kayak for 250 miles over a pickup bed to cushion the ropes/tie-downs against the truck lest you end up with rub-marks on your vehicle. Works awesome in the lay-down mode. very quick to tie a kayak down and launch in prepped position. 50672

Works great, though I wish the metal tubing was a little thicker and the ends inserted a little further inside the hitch receiver. This product is a must if you have a short bed truck and have any intention of carrying lumber or anything else longer than 8 feet. I was able to carry 12 foot 6x6s home without any issue. 627850

I purchased this hitch extender for hauling 13 foot Kayaks in my GMC Sierra bed. It has worked out as well as I had imagined it would. What I didn't expect is how often I would use it for other hauls, 9 foot long sheet rock, 12' long finish lumber and moulding etc. Stuff that i would normally have put on my lumber rack is way easier to manage for one person using the extender and truck bed. This was a great value for the money. I like the tied down points and the fact that I can slide the t-bar over the extender bar and have it fit under the rear seat of my extended cab. 596414

- DTA944
by:

I use this receiver hitch rack on my 2011 Toyota RAV4. It fits perfectly, even with the external spare tire. The rack is ideal for carrying a canoe or lumber on the car since it spreads the distance between the front luggage rack on the car and the rear rack, which is the receiver hitch mounted rack. The distance between the front and rear luggage racks on the car is just 3'. Having this rack in place makes the distance 7', which is perfect for most applications. Having the T-bar on the back makes loading a 70-pound canoe by myself simple. I went ahead and purchased the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch along with this rack. With the Quiet Hitch installed and with the securing straps attached, there is very little rack movement. I only wish there wasn't so much wobble without those items, but every rack is like that. The benefit of the Quiet Hitch, by the way, is that it also virtually locks your rack onto the car. I had no problem with bottoming out on a road full of potholes. I'd buy this rack again, and doing business with etrailer is painless. 588058

I love this load extender. I've used it a number of times to haul longer material and the results have been excellent. A few months ago, I picked up some longer material from a lumber mill, and the owner aw it while we were loading and wanted to know where he could get one. I gave him ETrailer's email address and told him to check it out. I highly recommend this extender 558637

Delivery box was kinda beat up, but figure that it wouldn't be bent. Nice weight and easy to install. Only issue is it is wobbly in the hitch. Will use soon to return 16' moulding and my 13.9' kayak. 549934

Comments

Because of differences in the manufacturing tolerances between the outside dimension of the portion of the load extender that slides into the receiver tube and the inside dimension of the receiver tube, some movement of the hitch accessory is unavoidable. If the movement concerns you, various anti-rattle devices are available to stiffen up that connection. The Roadmaster Quiet Hitch, part # RM-061

  • The Darby Extend-A-Truck Hitch Mounted Load Extender, # DTA944, does not comes with the straps you see in the pictures. It does come with a little red flag, though. If you look at some of the pictures of just the extender, you will see two loops, one on each end, of the T part of the extender. You could run safety cables, rope, or hooks through these to help secure the cargo. The other straps are attached in the adjustments holes for the cross bar. You could also wrap a strap around each...
