    • Width: 48"

Creating a kayak-carrying system for your truck is easy with this unique kit. First, slide the Extend-A-Truck load extender into your hitch in the upright position. Then adjust the extender vertically so that it matches the height of your roof. To install the rooftop crossbar, simply set the bar and roof-rack feet in place on your roof and secure the strap inside your vehicle with the included cambuckle.

Place the sturdy, non-scratch foam block across the top crossbar of the load extender to create a safe and secure cradle for your boat to sit in. The wide cutout on the bottom of the block allows it to fit securely over the crossbar. The foam block will fit over the rooftop crossbar as well, so you can purchase another to ensure that both ends of your kayak are cradled by protective foam during transport.

The foam towers on the single bar roof rack worked beautifully. My only complaint was the whole thing depended on the S hooks the strap that runs through the cab is attached to. Under enough load, S hooks are subject to straightening out. So I took a spare Rhino Rack strap and looped it over both ends of the bar and back through the cab for a backup and to keep some load off the S hooks. You can also see in the picture that the bar has rotated slightly so that end of the strap could possibly slip off the S hook. A closed shackle would inspire more confidence than an S hook.

Havent transported my kayak since I purchased it, but this equipment survived a rough road trip from NY to VA last year, so I recommend it.

Perfect solution for my Ram 1500 with Ramboxes and a BacFlip tonneau cover. All of the other beach/lake paraphernalia is securely locked in the bed and still accessable when you need it, and I can carry two 11 1/2 foot kayaks as well. Used a pool "noodle" on the cab rack as a cushion. Rack only takes 5 minutes to install or remove. I use anti-rattle devices at both joints.

We have 28 kayak launching locations within 20 miles. Needless to say, we use the rack on a weekly basis. Easy to put on and take off by myself. Very happy with this product.

I purchased the Darby for my 12 Foot Kayak. I noted in the instructions that a rope was required to secure the hitch in the upright position due to its wobbly fit in the hitch receiver. I was unsure about what to expect and found that I could use a different attachment point on my truck to secure the hitch. Rear Stacks in my bed. (see pictures) Wear Point..... The product improvement feedback I would give to the manufacturer is to place a plastic molded insert into the top support tube to reduce metal on strap or rope on metal wear during transport. I understand that this is a cost but having your customer create an insert when you can create one for the customer would be in my opinion an improvement. The wind noise was minimal on the large cushions on the front carrier, thought the noise would be greater. As we all know drag is a mileage killer and any noise during travel is annoying and concerning, when you hear a noise come out of the blue when you are driving you need to stop and check. Overall great product and serves those who need a simple design multipurpose hitch, mine will be dedicated to my Yak. For those thinking of purchasing I took my Kayak out for maiden voyage with its new carrier speeds up to 75 mph and found a few improvements. I did not buy the foam pad for the front carrier. Instead I purchased foam pipe insulation and doubled it up and used good ole duct tape as the adhesive. Thick Float Noodles work if you want one of those. I will check the wear on my improvised foam. I used ratchet straps for tie downs and used my bed stakes for anchor points. I used pcs of the foam insulation to protect my straps from the metal on strap contact point and I will be fabricating an improvement because the foam is temporary. Happy Camping for those out of doors enthusiasts!

The extension worked great on the front of my truck, keeping my canoe from hitting my fifth wheel. We traveled over 3000 miles without a problem. Make sure you use good ratchet straps.

Texas coast, I needed some sort of way to carry my yak with my truck having a bed cover on it at the same time. This carrier works awesome, I know some of yall are thinking i wonder if it works. Well it does pretty good too. The roof carrier works great and the truck doors close flush as if the strap wasn't attached. And there isn't any leakage if it was to rain. I also pull a travel trailer so this carrier hooks into my front bumper and I am able to carry it that way as well. If you have any concerns about this product, don't because Im pleased with it and it does its job.

My extend-a-truck kayak carrier with hitch mounted load extender and single bar roof rack is advertised for kayaks but it works well with my paddle boards too! The quality of the product is outstanding and it was extremely easy to install. I bought 2 ratchet straps and a cargo net to attach my boards more securely since I travel long distances. Excellent service, too! I had my product delivered in less than 3 days!

Darby Extend-a-truck carrier and single bar roof rack is just what I was looking for. Recently bought an F150 with short bed and needed something for 12' Kayak. Love the racks, fits perfect and easy to install. Have to give a thumps up to etrailer.com also. I've bought tons of stuff online but etrailer.com might have the best customer service I've ever experienced. Thanks! And with their price guarantee you really can't go wrong.

Just received my Darby truck extender and Swagman EXO rooftop kayak carriers. I paired them together and they work great at clearing the light bar mounted on top of my truck sports bar! Plan on making a trip to the beach this weekend with the new kayak.

Very easy to assemble & install. The roof rack is not heavy duty but it is adequate for the canoes & kayaks I will be using it for. It will work well for carrying extension ladders also.

E-trailer followed up with in regards to delivery and satisfaction with product! Not may companies do this! We have loved the rack and it has worked perfectly for our kayaking and camping trips. We have plans in a couple weeks to load up and take the surf boards and grills to head south to the beach.

Quick shipping. Easy assembly. 2 inch trailer insert is a little loose a wobbles a little with canoe on top but the boat doesn’t move at all. Foam piece is to small for the canoe I have but a couple 2 dollar foam noodles works perfect.

I've only used this once so far to transport my new kayak home from the retailer. I didn't use the roof rack but rather used the extension in the low setting with my kayak sticking out of the bed of my Silverado. It worked like a charm. I plan to only use the roof rack/extension high setting when I need the bed space for other things. It's much easier to lift an 80lb kayak into a truck bed than overhead at 6 feet plus. The extension wobbles a little in the receiver as others have mentioned but a couple ratchet straps between the T bar and your bumpers tightens everything well. Just like other items I've purchased from etrailer, the order to receipt time was fantastic. Great outfit.

This is a great in expensive rack that gets the job done. Used it to haul my kayak on a camping trip. I was able to transport the kayak securely and still have use of my trucks bed cover to store gear. The trailer hitch rack is a bit wobbly but is easily secured with two ratcheting tie down straps secured to the tow assembly. The kayak is a bit difficult to mount with one person, but easily secures to the trailer hitch rack and roof rack with cargo straps. Definitely would recommend for someone who wants to haul a kayak or other large item, with a bed cover.

Comments
Thanks for checking in, actually I just started using to rack to haul 2 kayaks now. I was only hauling one until this summer when I bought my son one. I like the rack there was a little learning curve with strapping the kayaks, but that is because they dont have the greatest anchor points and when Im hauling long distance I want to make sure that they are super secure. The rack seems to wobble a bit in the tow hitch, but was easily fixed by using cargo ratchet straps to keep it tight. All in all I like the rack, it is really easy to install, remove and store. Again, Thanks for checking in.

This set up is the perfect way to take all types of kayaks. I have five different boats from racing to one man canoe. All fit without too much adjustment everytime for the different boats. Also, it takes no time to fold the whole unit up when you want your truck to look clean without racks. Because of the square tubing the fit on the trailer hitch can be tightened up with a u bolt unit that you can get at etrailer along with the rack. That makes the “T” straight and holds well and no rattles! Get this to covert your stock truck into a kayak carrying machine. I have someone ask me where I got it every day . You will love it...

Thank you for your suggestion. The anti-rattle accessory Andy is referring to is the roadmaster quiet hitch for 2 inch hitches, part # RM-061
Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches
$26.60
. It tightens up the space between the hitch and the accessory to eliminate rattle.

I like the Darby water sport carrier very much to carry my two kayaks and have used it several times. I am in my 70’s and it is quite easy to secure the kayaks with ratchet straps. The trouble I have had comes with the inability to pull my camper as the carrier occupies the trailer hitch. Overhead ladder racks may be the answer that I don’t have to drill holes in my f150 and can put it on and off without too much trouble. Any ideas?

- DTA944-968-924
by:

The kayak carrier rack works well and is simple to use. There is only one thing that I do not like about the product and that is that there is a lot of "play" or looseness with the upright bar as it attaches to the hitch. If it is not ratcheted down very tightly, there is a lot of sway, so when going over bumpy or uneven terrain, it moves side to side and back and forth. It seems like it allows the kayak to move across the front bar and doesn't seem as secure as it should be. I've not had any other issues with the product and it works as described.

Comments
I has been functional, but the upright bar still sways unless it is ratcheted very tightly to the bed of the truck. Other than than, it gets the job done well.

My kayak carrier arrived within 5 days of my order, in perfect condition. Because I had researched various options, I was aware of how this device was structured, and there were no surprises. I put it all together in about 6 minutes, and had my kayak mounted and ready for a 1 hr drive to Cape Anne MA within another 10 minutes. (advice: you should either mount the included foam cushion up front, and figure out how to cushion the rear of your kayak, or simply order an extra bolster for the rear of the kayak support.) For short hauls, I've used the rear mount WITHOUT any extra strapping to guard against right-left wobble, and it's not a problem. For longer hauls, the brace to bumper strapping is probably a good idea. All in all, I considered many homemade options before I found this product, and in the end this has proved to be the best option. Convenient, not terribly expensive, and very sturdy! And by the way, the reason I'm not attaching a photo -- the thing is in the back of my truck right now, because I use it frequently. It assembles/disassembles so quickly that I only use it when I need it. When on the truck it looks exactly like the photos!

The linked page displays all such kayak carriers for round crossbars, such as the fixed-style Rhino-Rack J-Style Kayak Carrier # S510. The kayak carrier hardware may not fit on the hitch-mounted load support bar but since the Darby system includes a foam block for this you may prefer to use a J-style carrier...

  • How To Carry Kayak On Roof Of 2009 Volvo C70
I do have an option for you but the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack part # DTA944-968-924 is going to be too tall to use on your vehicle to transport the kayak level with the roof. The Volvo is about 4-1/2 feet tall and the Darby will be a foot taller then the vehicle once installed in the hitch. Also, the Darby needs to be installed in a 2" hitch and it looks like you have a 1-1/4" Class I hitch on the Volvo. Instead, the only...

  • Recommendation for Transporting 2 Kayaks with 2015 Nissan Frontier Short Bed
The Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 referenced in your question is a great option and what I recommend for securing your two 10+ foot kayaks on your 2015 Nissan Frontier with the short bed. This system includes a universal-fit, rooftop crossbar that will mount to the Frontier's bare roof and a hitch-mounted load extension that will slide right into a 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. The extender crossbar has an inside width of 48 inches and the rooftop crossbar can adjust...

  • Recommended Canoe Loader And Carrier With Roof Bar For Transporting 1 Canoe Or Kayak
We do not carry the Reese Towpower Canoe Loader you mentioned, however we have very similar systems. I recommend the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack # DTA944-968-924. This system comes everything you need for the full system to carry your canoe. If you just want the hitch rail, you can get that separately as # DTA944

  • Can Darby Kayak Carrier with Upright # DTA944-968-924 Carry 2 Kayaks
Yes, you can carry two kayaks with the # DTA944-968-924 but you would need to get a second foam block for the second kayak. For that you would want the part # DTA924. For additional straps you then could use the part # Y05006.

  • Upright Hitch Mounted Kayak Carrier for 2016 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab
The price of the Darby Extend a Truck Kayak Carrier part # DTA944-968-924 is basically impossible to beat. For what you are getting for the price it's a tough option not to go with. However, it does use a universal crossbar that wouldn't be quite as secure as a custom roof rack. The crossbar wouldn't go anywhere once installed. But the connection would not be nearly as solid. For additional foam blocks to carry more kayaks you would want the part # DTA924 as well. For lighter duty...

  • Carrying 2 Stand Up Paddleboards with Darby Load Extender on a 2013 Chevy Silverado
The Darby load extender and single roof rack bar # DTA944-968-924 can handle the 2 paddleboards but you will need a paddleboard carrier as well to safely secure and protect the boards. The Thule SUP Shuttle # TH811XT has a good price and holds 2 boards up to 34 inches wide. Only the SUPDawg, # Y04075, can handle wider boards and it maxes out at 36 inches. These carriers also include tie downs to secure the "bow" and "stern" of the boards. I have included video links to all of the...

  • Best Support for Bow of Boat Carried on Ladder Rack on 2018 Ford F-150 Super Crew 5-1/2-Foot Bed
My research indicates that Apex offers both over-the-cab ladder racks like the Thule TracRac Universal Steel Rac # TH91000 and also standard 2-bar racks like the T-Rac Pro2 Truck Bed Ladder Rack # TH37002XT. I presume you have one of the standard 2-bar racks. You have the option of installing a roof rack on your F-150's super-crew cab to help support the bow of the boat. The Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero rack # RR29XR offers a sleek appearance and quiet performance thanks to its aerodynamic-shape...

  • Compatibility of Darby Extend-A-Truck on 2016 Ford Focus with Bike Rack
On your 2016 Ford Focus, we only have an option like that if you have the Hatchback RS. The EcoHitch # 306-X7355 is the only 2 inch receiver and is only a fit for the Hatchback RS. The Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack # DTA944-968-924 can work to carry your kayaks as long as from the receiver to the roof line is 53-3/8 inches or taller. It seems to me that the bar would need to be cut down and holes drilled for the correct height....

  • Can Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier be Used With a Dual-Hitch Receiver?
Yes, the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier, # DTA944-968-924 will work in your dual-hitch receiver provided it's dimensions are 2" x 2".
