Specs:

  • Application: naked-roof vehicles with 2" x 2" trailer hitch receivers
  • Hitch-mounted extension:
    • Weight capacity: 350 lbs
    • Width: 48"
    • Vertical adjustment (from the top of the hitch opening): 53-3/8" - 60-3/8"
    • Distance from center of hitch pin hole to upright bar: 9-1/2"

  • Foam block dimensions: 18" long x 5" wide

Creating a kayak-carrying system for your truck is easy with this unique kit. First, slide the Extend-A-Truck load extender into your hitch in the upright position. Then adjust the extender vertically so that it matches the height of your roof. To install the rooftop crossbar, simply set the bar and roof-rack feet in place on your roof and secure the strap inside your vehicle with the included cambuckle.

Place the sturdy, non-scratch foam block across the top crossbar of the load extender to create a safe and secure cradle for your boat to sit in. The wide cutout on the bottom of the block allows it to fit securely over the crossbar. The foam block will fit over the rooftop crossbar as well, so you can purchase another to ensure that both ends of your kayak are cradled by protective foam during transport.

Extend-A-Truck Load Extender Dimensions

The Extend-A-Truck load extender is an economically priced load-carrying alternative that is easily removable and fully adjustable to fit multiple cargo applications. In addition to using it as part of a roof-rack system, you can also position it so it sits lower and extends out farther from the rear of your vehicle so that you can carry long loads that would not otherwise fit in your truck bed.

I purchased the Darby for my 12 Foot Kayak. I noted in the instructions that a rope was required to secure the hitch in the upright position due to its wobbly fit in the hitch receiver. I was unsure about what to expect and found that I could use a different attachment point on my truck to secure the hitch. Rear Stacks in my bed. (see pictures) Wear Point..... The product improvement feedback I would give to the manufacturer is to place a plastic molded insert into the top support tube to reduce metal on strap or rope on metal wear during transport. I understand that this is a cost but having your customer create an insert when you can create one for the customer would be in my opinion an improvement. The wind noise was minimal on the large cushions on the front carrier, thought the noise would be greater. As we all know drag is a mileage killer and any noise during travel is annoying and concerning, when you hear a noise come out of the blue when you are driving you need to stop and check. Overall great product and serves those who need a simple design multipurpose hitch, mine will be dedicated to my Yak. For those thinking of purchasing I took my Kayak out for maiden voyage with its new carrier speeds up to 75 mph and found a few improvements. I did not buy the foam pad for the front carrier. Instead I purchased foam pipe insulation and doubled it up and used good ole duct tape as the adhesive. Thick Float Noodles work if you want one of those. I will check the wear on my improvised foam. I used ratchet straps for tie downs and used my bed stakes for anchor points. I used pcs of the foam insulation to protect my straps from the metal on strap contact point and I will be fabricating an improvement because the foam is temporary. Happy Camping for those out of doors enthusiasts! 359567

My kayak carrier arrived within 5 days of my order, in perfect condition. Because I had researched various options, I was aware of how this device was structured, and there were no surprises. I put it all together in about 6 minutes, and had my kayak mounted and ready for a 1 hr drive to Cape Anne MA within another 10 minutes. (advice: you should either mount the included foam cushion up front, and figure out how to cushion the rear of your kayak, or simply order an extra bolster for the rear of the kayak support.) For short hauls, I've used the rear mount WITHOUT any extra strapping to guard against right-left wobble, and it's not a problem. For longer hauls, the brace to bumper strapping is probably a good idea. All in all, I considered many homemade options before I found this product, and in the end this has proved to be the best option. Convenient, not terribly expensive, and very sturdy! And by the way, the reason I'm not attaching a photo -- the thing is in the back of my truck right now, because I use it frequently. It assembles/disassembles so quickly that I only use it when I need it. When on the truck it looks exactly like the photos! 143527

The Extend-A-Bed arrived fine, I assembled it and although I wouldn't call it lightweight, it was not as heavy duty as I had expected - like for example, my old bicycle rack I purchased years ago that I mounted to the hitch on our old Suburban. However I'm sure it's up to the job it's intended for. I did notice some play where the two parts connect although probably won't be as apparent when all is cinched down. Having a Nissan Titan with "tie-rails" around the upper perimeter of the bed I plan on strapping the upright to these "rails" in the bed rather than the rear bumper - it will not only brace the pole against side to side movement (pitching) but also pull the pole forward thus helping support the weight of whatever's being carried. This is a great product for the price since you're killing two birds with one stone - you have a small roof rack system for ladders, poles, canoe/kayak, etc. as well as a support for those long heavy things you can't, or don't want to, mount up high so end up rather precariously in the bed. Now the negative part and why this is only rated three stars. There is a single pole roof "rack" that comes as part of the Extend-A-Bed kit, problem is mine arrived with nothing to attach it to the roof - no strap, no ratchet, no hooks, nada. I could get sarcastic here but I won't. Suffice it to say someone screwed up somewhere and as I can't mount the roof rack, the whole thing is useless to me. I'm hoping e-trailer will dig up whatever I'm missing and Fedex them over to me. 268461

The Darby Extend a Truck kayak carrier arrived quickly via free standard shipping after a personalized courtesy email from eTrailer thanking me for the purchase. I bought this to haul my 13' Hobie Mirage Revolution, and I was surprised at how simple it was to put up. The included single bar roof rack (Turbo Rack) was essential to evenly distribute the front end weight and avoid roof damage on my Tacoma pickup. Although I'm just somewhat disappointed that the hauler doesn't fit snugly into the 2" hitch, it allows only minimal movement during transport and hasn't impacted safety in any way I can see. And I had no issues using a couple of tie-downs to secure the rack to the truck to minimize swaying, one to secure the back end of the kayak to the rack and one to secure the front. I've only had this for a few days but immediately hauled my kayak to and from a service dealer with no issues. I've been looking for something like this for a couple of years and highly recommend this for hauling kayaks. Next up...extending at bed level to haul other stuff, too! 78862

Product arrived promptly and packaged well with great instructions. Product works as described and is perfect for my situation. E-trailer followed up with in regards to delivery and satisfaction with product! Not may companies do this! Photos show how well this works for my kayak or any number of other situations, especially since the rack will rotate to carry lumber and such. 94621

Used the product over the weekend on top of my Silverado, worked great. Hauled my 16 ft. canoe easily during 2.5 hour trip. Have also used it as an extension for local trips. I would recommend this product and e-trailer to my friends. E-trailer made buying easy and had it to me in 4 days. Thanks a lot. (Sorry no pictures) 223344

Still as satisfied as before. Finding many uses for the product other than hauling my canoe. Again thanks a lot.

I've gotta say that the pictures, videos, questions and answers about this product are 100% accurate, and very helpful! I recommend you view them all. My comments are focused on etrailer.com. I have rarely seen such a well run, organized and responsive site! When have you ever asked a question on a site, and gotten an emailed response while you are still surfing the web? Gotta love that. After researching what was available (that's what WE ALL DO, RIGHT?) I decided I wanted the Darby Extend-a-truck kayak carrier system. Since Christmas was coming, I mentioned my choice to my very generous sister-in-law, who gave it to me as a gift. Unfortunately, she purchased the components from a different site. Even after returning her purchase, and paying return freight, it was cheaper on etrailer.com! Ordered Christmas morning and delivered on January 2nd. From now on, etrailer will be the first place I go. 167663

Darby Extend-a-truck carrier and single bar roof rack is just what I was looking for. Recently bought an F150 with short bed and needed something for 12' Kayak. Love the racks, fits perfect and easy to install. Have to give a thumps up to etrailer.com also. I've bought tons of stuff online but etrailer.com might have the best customer service I've ever experienced. Thanks! And with their price guarantee you really can't go wrong. 383964

Texas coast, I needed some sort of way to carry my yak with my truck having a bed cover on it at the same time. This carrier works awesome, I know some of yall are thinking i wonder if it works. Well it does pretty good too. The roof carrier works great and the truck doors close flush as if the strap wasn't attached. And there isn't any leakage if it was to rain. I also pull a travel trailer so this carrier hooks into my front bumper and I am able to carry it that way as well. If you have any concerns about this product, don't because Im pleased with it and it does its job. 87818

I highly recommend the Darby- Extend-A-Truck system! I use it all the time to transport two kayaks on top of my Ford F150 and have room in the bed of my truck for coolers and camping gear. It rides great at highway speed (75 mph). I do use around 5 straps to make sure kayaks are secure. I recently purchase a 13 John Boat and use the load extender to transport the boat to my pond. It is legal in GA to have a boat sticking out the back of a truck as long as it is flagged properly. The Extender is also great for carrying 12 foot long deck boards without having them bend. Great product! Matt 392232

After searching for several months for a way to carry a kayak on a silverado with a Tonneau cover, I finally found the perfect solution. This rack made it wasy to haul a twin heron two person kayak while keeping the storage area for the Tonneau. The rack is easy to install and is very sturdy with the help of some ratcheting straps. For short distances, it was also great to flip the rack and utilize the truck bed instead of having to lift the kayak onto the roof each time. I am very happy with this product, and was pleased with the quick shipping. 278252

The product is all that I hoped it would be. It solves my problem of wanting to haul 5 surf boards and one paddle board. It should also be great for hauling lumber longer than my 5.5ft truck bed. The delivery only took 5 days. Great tracking software. 371423

Was looking for a reasonably priced, convenient way to transport my kayaks on my Toyota Tacoma. This product fit the bill AND offered me two ways to transport-in the bed or up over the top. I've used it both ways, on short and long trips, and have had zero issues. I love that I can secure my kayaks on the roof and have the entire truck bed for my camping gear. I am so pleased with everything about this! Thank you! 349847

Purchased this item fot my 17 foot canoe. Also purchased the 2 day delivery and received it a day late. I Put it together noticed it's not very stable at the hitch point and the cross bar. So you will may need to spend more money for a hitch tightener, and do something to address the pivoting cross bar. If i could do it over again would have likely just picked up a more stable unit at a farm supply store. 396375

Product is made very well and it exactly what I was looking for in order to haul my kayak and also utilize my bed cover at the same time so that I could lock up luggage. Perfect for what I needed. The only down side...I only received one bar pad for padding under the kayak and both the roof rack and the hitch extender require one. 284372

Sturdy construction & good value compared to the other options out there. As stated in previous reviews you WILL need straps from the rack to rear bumper on both ends to stabilize it as it has ALOT of wobble in the receiver. I will be using it to haul (2) 11.5 ft. kayaks. It is wide enough to do this but not much room to spare. 333522

Bought this truck rack for my 2013 F-150 Super Crew to haul 10 and 12 foot kayaks. After about a month of use I'm very impressed. Very easy to hook up and take down. Solid construction and lots of tie down spots. Even traveling 70mph on the highway, my boats don't move at all. Would highly recommend to others. 311047

Easy to install and worked great to transport an 11 foot long paddle board to the beach. This is a great quick fix for carrying a long load on a short bed. Make sure you use good tie-downs and strap your load in tight and that will take most of the wiggle out of the bed extender. 263536

Unfortunately I took a 14-foot fall off my roof and was unable to get my boat on the water last year. BUT, I have used my truck carrier for my boat several times, and I like it just fine! A bit tall, but hey, I have to get the boat on top of the roof of the truck ... Good product! Thanks!

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • Options for Carrying Two 12 Foot Kayaks While Towing a 5th Wheel
  • There are a couple of options to carry your kayaks. Because of the length of the kayaks, they will likely interfere with the front of the 5th wheel camper if carried solely on the truck's roof. One options you have is to carry the kayas on the top of the camper. Keep in mind that this will increase the overall height of your camper, and you will want to measure the overall height to know your clearance for overpasses. We installed a Thule square bar system on one of our employees'...

  • Recommended 2-Kayak Carrier Solution for 2015 GMC Sierra Double Cab with Folding Tonneau Cover
  • Folding tonneau covers can sometimes be tough to fit along with a ladder rack since often both will use the same or similar attachment points on the tops or sides of the bed rails. But I do have a great solution for you for transporting two 14-foot kayaks with a total weight of 150-lbs that will actually cost you a lot less than many quality ladder racks AND avoid any concerns about compatibility with your tonneau cover. The solution I recommend is a hitch-mount load support bar....

  • Kayak/Canoe Carrier for Use on Hard Hatch-Style Tonneau Cover on 2007 Dodge Ram 1500
  • We do not offer any kayak carriers intended specifically for mounting on a hard tonneau cover but we do offer foam-block type kayak carriers that could simply rest on top of it and work well for you. These are intended for transporting kayaks on a vehicle with a bare roof. The linked page displays all such foam kayak carriers. These offer the advantages of low cost, very light weight and simple installation. They also require no drilling or modification to your hatch-style tonneau...

  • Need Roof Rack and Water Sports Carriers for Paddle Board and Kayak on 2012 Honda Ridgeline
  • A first step in finding a roof rack and appropriate watercraft carriers for your 2012 Honda Ridgeline Sport is a check of your owners manual (or inquiry to your local dealership) to confirm how much weight the roof can safely handle. I did check an online version of the manual for the 2012 Ridgeline but I was not able to find a roof weight capacity rating. The vehicle roof needs to be able to handle the total combined weight of a roof rack, the water sport carriers you choose, plus the...

  • Hitch-mount load extenders like the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 do not include a built-in bike carrier feature nor are they suited to any add-on carriers. We do offer some combination cargo/bike carrier items, such as the Hollywood Racks # HR1450-85, but nothing meant for both kayaks and bicycles. However, you can install a 2-inch front-mount hitch # C31070 in your 2015 F-150 and place either the Darby carrier or a hitch-mount bike rack in that front hitch while...

  • I have a solution for you, but we do not carry any ladder racks that will fit with the Ram boxes. Instead, I recommend looking at the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier with Hitch Mount Load Extender, # DTA944-968-924. This system comes with a single-bar roof rack that mounts on the top of your cab and it has a hitch mounted load extender that will allow you to carry the canoe above the cab just like a ladder rack. I have attached a demonstration video for you to check out.

It would not interfere with your windows or door operations. To see exactly how it tightens check out the video I attached.

  • Recommendation for Carrying 2 Kayaks on 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab
  • There are a few options for carrying 2 kayaks on your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab. I will give you both an economy option that I recommend just for occasional use and also a higher end product if you plan on using it more often. I recommend using a hitch mounted load extender along with a single-bar roof rack. • The Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrying system, part # DTA944-968-924 could potentially be a great choice for carrying your canoe. You wouldn't want the 'feet' of the crossbars sitting on the glass of the sunroof. The feet are about 6 inches wide, and in the provided photo, you can see how they'd sit on the vehicle roof. If you can avoid the sunroof, and the 1/2 the weight of the canoe won't exceed the roof capacity of the truck (check the owner's manual or with Ford), this would be an...

The Extend-A-Truck load extender includes a single roof rack bar and is an economically priced load-carrying alternative that fits multiple cargo applications including your portable, fold-up boat. • The Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 referenced in your question will work great on your 2014 Toyota Tacoma as long as it has a naked roof. The single crossbar roof rack portion of this system is a universal-fit application that will mount to any naked roof with non-scratch foam feet and a strap that will run through the truck cab to secure everything into place. • Would the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier # DTA944-968-924 work with 10 ft Kayak
  • That would depend on the length of your bed whether or not the kayak carrier setup part # DTA944-968-924 would work for you. From the center of your hitch pin hole out to the upright bar of the rack measures 9-1/2 inches so you will need to consider that dimension as well. If you have a short bed truck the # DTA944-968-924 should work well. An 8 foot bed would probably be too long.

If you can place your kayaks side by side, and the total width of the two is less than 48 inches, then the Darby # DTA944-968-924 Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier you referenced would work great for you. A better solution is going to be to install a roof rack on your 2015 Chevy Colorado and then use a kayak carrier that holds them on end so that they can all fit like the Thule Stacker # TH830.
