Video Transcript for Thule The Stacker Rooftop Kayak Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Thule Stacker Rooftop Multi-Kayak Carrier, part number Th830. The Thule Stacker is a great way to carry up to four kayaks while traveling down the road. It has universal hardware that will fit almost any roof-rack system. Another great feature of the Thule Stacker is its ability to fold down when not in use. There is a knob on each end of the carrier that you can loosen up to give you a cleaner look on your vehicle. Keep in mind when purchasing this product, if your kayak is longer than ten feet, or if you are using an ocean wider kayak, you will need to use part numbers THH34 or TH835PRO. Now the stacker does have the capability of carrying four kayaks, but for today's demonstration, we'll be carrying one. If you we're to carry two kayaks, you would position the stacker more towards the center of your vehicle, and carry a kayak one on each side of the stacker.

When you are carrying four kayaks, you would carry two on each side. Additional tie-downs and straps will be needed for that configuration. Now that we have gone over some of special features of the Thule Stacker, we will go ahead and show you how to install it. We'll start off by placing the front part of the carrier onto our load bar. We'll then take out our hardware, which is our bolt, our wingnut, and our bracket. We'll start by sliding the bolt through the holes in the bottom of the carrier and putting the bracket around the underside of the front load bar and threading our wingnut onto our bolt. We'll then repeat the same process for the other bracket.

We'll then repeat the same process for the rear part of the carrier on the rear load bar. Now our stacker, raised, and tightened down and secure, we'll go ahead and place our kayak up on the load bar. Now before actually loading up our kayak, I have found that it is easiest to first put the straps on the top portion of the stacker. Now there are grooves here on the top portion, which we'll insert the strap through and pull it over, but before doing so we'll need to insert our rubber-protective padding, which will go over the cam buckle to protect our kayak, as well as our vehicle. With that in place, we'll insert the strap through the top portion of the stacker and pull it out. We'll then repeat the same steps for the rear portion of the stacker. Now that we have both straps in position onto our stacker, we'll go ahead and place the kayak onto the vehicle's load bars.

With our kayak in place, we can then pull the straps up over top of the kayak and we'll then secure them at the base of our roof-rack. We'll take our strap, wrap it around the underside of the bar and insert the strap into our buckle. Now you don't want to tighten the first one down too tight before you get the other one in place as then you will offset the kayak. Then repeat the same steps from the other side. Now with both straps in place, we then can continue to tighten them all the way down. Once they're all tightened down, we can then secure the excess slack.

Now the kayak's secured with the straps looping around the stacker, we're ready to install our bow and stern straps. We'll take the hook and hook it into the front of the kayak, and for today's demonstration we'll be using the quick loops for Thule bow and stern tie downs, part number Th530. We'll undo the hood at the front. Then this rubber piece right here will go inside the gap of our hood. When it closes down, it'll create a connection point for our strap. Be careful when placing this in your hood, as you don't want it next to anything that's going to get super-hot.Take the hook into our loop. We'll come back up to the top. Now you don't want to tighten it too tight until you get the rear strap in place as then the rear of the kayak is going to stick up. Now I'll move to the rear and install the strap. For the rear one we'll be putting it in between the rear hatch. We'll find a place with a nice gap, place the rubber piece in there, and close the hatch down. We'll hook this up to the top, and then take our silver hook and hook it into the strap and pull this tight. Now with the rear strap tightened down we can go back to the front and continue to tighten down the front strap. We can then secure the excess slack. We'll then move back to the rear and secure the slack as well. Now that our kayak is all loaded up and secured, we'll go ahead and take it for a test drive to show how it looks driving down the road. That will complete today's review of the Thule Stacker Rooftop Multi-Kayak Carrier, part number Th830. .

I purchased this for my son and friend, and told me it works great. It is easy to attach, fold down when not in use, and takes up very little space when storing. It made a great gift, as well as making loading and unloading simple and easy. 485360

Great product. Explanation of what we needed before we bought the product was excellent! Have loaded 4 kayaks easily for a couple trips. Very happy we purchased this instead of a trailer. Easy to take on and off and light to use on both vehicles allowing us to carry on kayak trip so we do not leave kayaks while retrieving other vehicle. 216308

Love this stacker rack! Wanted to get something that can carry 1-6 boats, and it works perfectly! Folds down nicely on the roof to fit in the garage when not in use. Carries up to 4 boats on my Chrysler Town & Country; up to 6 on the bars of my buddy's pop-up camper roof (extra straps are required for more than 2 boats). Durable, as are pretty much all Thule products. Would highly recommend! 251004

The picture shows the stacker in the down position. Very easy to install and raise to tie the kayaks to the two upright Stackers. After you remove the kayaks, simple to loosen a knob and lay the stackers flat so that you don't hear any wind noise when you are driving. Or you can just remove them until the next time you go kayaking. This allows us to carry two of our plastic river kayaks. If we buy another set of the Stackers, we can carry a total of 4 river kayaks. 223495

The Stacker worked perfectly! We needed to haul 2 kayaks, and when we began to suspect that my 2014 CR-V cross rails weren't wide enough for the Thule J-Style carriers I kept looking. Well, The Stacker was the perfect solution. Mounted in the center of the rails, to accommodate two Kayaks. Watching the video provided on etrailer page was very helpful, as we have never tried to use anything like this before. These brackets are so very sturdy, and with kayaks attached, were so stable. The straps provided were sturdy too, and easy to use. Being able to use these two brackets, instead of having to buy two sets of J-style hooks was a huge money saver. Thanks to etrailer.com I was able to figure all of this out, using descriptions, reviews, videos and Q&A's available as I was trying to work out a solution. Thank you etrailer. 137486

Do the kayaks sit directly on the Thule cross bars? Do you for see a problem rubbing, since there doesnt appear to be any type of padding between the kayak and the rails?

The kayaks sit on the Rhino Rack bars and against the Thule carrier stems and rubbing is not an issue because they should have direct contact anyway. The straps keep them tight to the carrier stems and rack barsno padding needed. This was the best system for us!

Will this work on a 2012 Subaru Impreza Sport 5 door for two 10 foot wilderness Systems Tarpon 100 sit on top kayaks? The kayaks weigh about 52 lbs a piece and I have the factory cross bars that I purchased at my local Subaru dealer. Thanks

The racks should have no problem attaching to the bars, but, there are some things we should check to ensure this rack will work. 1) Check the crossbar spread, from center of front bar to center of rear bar, on the Subaru. It needs to be 24 inches, minimum. 2) Check the weight capacity of the roof/roof rack. If it is not indicated on the bars, then Subaru will have it listed in the ownersmanual. You have 104 lbs of kayak and about 8 pounds of kayak carrier with this one. Make sure your vehicle will accommodate that weight.

They Work Well, but Depending upon your position of the roof racks you may get wind whistle if you don't have the kayaks up there, otherwise with the kayaks it was great easy to use and mount on my Rhino Rack, wish they had a front wind cover that would mount and prevent wind Whistle. They definitely worked well with 2 kayaks up there, I will be trying with 3 in July. 385478

Looked everywhere to find a kayak rack that would fit on an existing 08 Xterra with a manufacturer storage rack and crossbar support. etrailer site had what I needed. They had a "blog" describing that this would work, with extension bolts (which they also supply). Received the system within 4 days, installed it in about 15 - 20 minutes on the manufacturer rack. Holds up great, first trip we traveled about 250 miles round trip with two kayaks on top (about 80 lbs total), in 20 - 30 mph winds. No problems at all. I am extremely happy with this system. I do use a few rubber cabinet liners cut and placed on the crossbars to help the kayaks from sliding (this is also very helpful). I have read a few reports of the boats coming lose, but have not had any issues. I have enclosed a few pictures to show how they install as well as how boats were secured. 406809

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • What Kayak Carrier will Fit the Thule TracRac SR Sliding Truck Bed Ladder Rack
  • I do have options for you depending on how many kayaks you need to carry but the Thule The Stacker part # TH830 will not fit the Thule TracRac SR Sliding Truck Bed Ladder Rack part # TH43002XT-501 because the crossbars on the TracRac are much larger (4-1/8" wide x 1-3/4" tall) than that of a standard crossbar. However, we do have kayak carriers that will fit the TracRac because they use the track mount system which is the same on the TracRac as most other manufacturers. I have attached...

The Stacker handles up to 4 kayaks up to 10-feet in length and holds them on their sides. Please click on the video link provided. If you don't have a factory roof rack but...

  • Inexpensive Way To Carry Two Kayaks on a 2019 Mazda CX-5
  • I do have an option for you but the factory roof rack on your 2019 Mazda CX-5 is most likely not large enough to carry two kayaks side by side. If you can give me the width of your kayaks and the length of the factory crossbars on your CX-5, I could then confirm this for you. If by chance the length of the factory crossbars on your CX-5 exceeds the width of your two kayaks then you can use the Malone Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # MPG154 to secure them but you will need to order two...

  • Recommendation For A Roof Rack For 2004 Ford Excursion To Carry 2 Kayaks
  • We carry roof racks for your 2004 Ford Excursion as long as you have the factory tracks that run front to back on the roof. I recommend the Thule SquareBar Roof Rack: 53 inch SquareBars (Item # TH712400), Rapid Podium Foot Pack (Item # TH460R), and Podium Style Fit Kit (Item # THKIT3101). For a carrier for your 2 kayaks, I recommend the Thule Stacker, Item # TH830, because it is designed specifically for carrying multiple kayaks. It can also hold up to 4 kayaks so you have expansion...

  • Roof Rack, Cargo Box and Kayak Carrier for 2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
  • We can help you with a roof rack for your Cherokee Trailhawk to allow use of a rooftop cargo box and kayak carrier. We can also offer you a suggestion for an additional cargo-carrying option. The linked page displays all roof rack fits for each of the two ways a Cherokee roof can be configured, either a bare roof with no fixtures or a roof that has raised front-to-back side rails like yours. Just click on your roof type to see suitable roof racks. If the roof were bare then you could...

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for 2013 Honda Odyssey for Kayak Carrier, Bike Rack and Cargo Box
  • One thing you'll need to consider is the weight capacity of the roof of your 2013 Honda Odyssey. Our roof racks have capacities typically at 165 lbs as the highest which works for most applications but for bike, kayak, and cargo box that would most likely put you over the capacity for that. For a roof rack the Malone roof rack part # MPG217 is a confirmed fit for the raised rails on your vehicle and will give you 65 inch long bars. This will give you plenty of room for accessories...but...

  • Can The Thule Stacker be Used to Transport Paddleboards
  • The Thule Stacker # TH830 referenced in your question can certainly be used to transport your paddleboard, as long as you secure it properly using the included ratcheting tie-downs and straps. You will simply mount your paddleboard the same way you would kayaks on this system. I have included a video demonstration on this system so you can see exactly how everything works. The posts will use the included mounting brackets to clamp onto the existing roof rack crossbars on your vehicle....

  • Roof Rack Recommendation for a 2011 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI to Carry Two Kayaks
  • The crossbars from the Rola Sport Series Roof Rack, # 59820, will sit slightly lower than the tops of the factory side rails on your 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI. If you lay a flat object on the rails across the vehicle then measure from the center of the roof up to the bottom of the object, that will give you a really good estimate of where the bottoms of the bars will be. Then open the sun roof and again measure without the object on the rails to see how far up the glass comes....
