Darby Watersport Carriers - DTA944-968-924

  • Convenient rack system lets you securely carry a kayak with your pickup truck
  • Extend-A-Truck load extender slides into your 2" trailer hitch and adjusts vertically for use with roof rack
    • Quick, easy installation - insert into receiver and secure with standard pin and clip or lock (sold separately)
  • Universal-fit, round crossbar mounts to your vehicle's bare roof to support your canoe or kayak
    • Place non-scratch foam feet on roof and telescope bar in or out to match width of vehicle
    • Run strap through your truck cab and secure inside
  • Sturdy foam block attaches to load extender to provide contoured, cushioned resting place for your boat
    • One block is included
    • Additional blocks can be purchased separately
  • Support bars and crossbars are constructed of durable powder coated steel
  • Tie-down straps sold separately

Specs:

  • Application: naked-roof vehicles with 2" x 2" trailer hitch receivers
  • Hitch-mounted extension:
    • Weight capacity: 350 lbs
    • Width: 48"
    • Vertical adjustment (from the top of the hitch opening): 53-3/8" - 60-3/8"
    • Distance from center of hitch pin hole to upright bar: 9-1/2"
  • Rooftop crossbar:
    • Weight capacity: refer to your owner's manual for vehicle's roof capacity
    • Width: 45" - 60"
  • Foam block dimensions: 18" long x 5" wide

Creating a kayak-carrying system for your truck is easy with this unique kit. First, slide the Extend-A-Truck load extender into your hitch in the upright position. Then adjust the extender vertically so that it matches the height of your roof. To install the rooftop crossbar, simply set the bar and roof-rack feet in place on your roof and secure the strap inside your vehicle with the included cambuckle.

Place the sturdy, non-scratch foam block across the top crossbar of the load extender to create a safe and secure cradle for your boat to sit in. The wide cutout on the bottom of the block allows it to fit securely over the crossbar. The foam block will fit over the rooftop crossbar as well, so you can purchase another to ensure that both ends of your kayak are cradled by protective foam during transport.

Extend-A-Truck Load Extender Dimensions

The Extend-A-Truck load extender is an economically priced load-carrying alternative that is easily removable and fully adjustable to fit multiple cargo applications. In addition to using it as part of a roof-rack system, you can also position it so it sits lower and extends out farther from the rear of your vehicle so that you can carry long loads that would not otherwise fit in your truck bed.

Used the product over the weekend on top of my Silverado, worked great. Hauled my 16 ft. canoe easily during 2.5 hour trip. Have also used it as an extension for local trips. I would recommend this product and e-trailer to my friends. E-trailer made buying easy and had it to me in 4 days. Thanks a lot. (Sorry no pictures) 223344

Comments

Still as satisfied as before. Finding many uses for the product other than hauling my canoe. Again thanks a lot.

Product held up well, but always seemed loose and noisey. Don't like the front strap going inside the truck cab. 621702

This product works but it could be a little more solid. It rattles and is able to move around more than I would like. If I had the opportunity to purchase this item again I would probable look at alternate solutions. 500786

Comments

Due to the variable tolerances between the receiver tube and the shank of the kayak carrier, a little movement is pretty much unavoidable. There are several anti-rattle solutions available that will help tighten up the connection between the hitch accessory and the receiver that will reduce the movement. The # RM-061
Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches
$27.94
from Roadmaster is probably our most popular anti-rattle device.

My kayak carrier arrived within 5 days of my order, in perfect condition. Because I had researched various options, I was aware of how this device was structured, and there were no surprises. I put it all together in about 6 minutes, and had my kayak mounted and ready for a 1 hr drive to Cape Anne MA within another 10 minutes. (advice: you should either mount the included foam cushion up front, and figure out how to cushion the rear of your kayak, or simply order an extra bolster for the rear of the kayak support.) For short hauls, I've used the rear mount WITHOUT any extra strapping to guard against right-left wobble, and it's not a problem. For longer hauls, the brace to bumper strapping is probably a good idea. All in all, I considered many homemade options before I found this product, and in the end this has proved to be the best option. Convenient, not terribly expensive, and very sturdy! And by the way, the reason I'm not attaching a photo -- the thing is in the back of my truck right now, because I use it frequently. It assembles/disassembles so quickly that I only use it when I need it. When on the truck it looks exactly like the photos! 143527

This set up is the perfect way to take all types of kayaks. I have five different boats from racing to one man canoe. All fit without too much adjustment everytime for the different boats. Also, it takes no time to fold the whole unit up when you want your truck to look clean without racks. Because of the square tubing the fit on the trailer hitch can be tightened up with a u bolt unit that you can get at etrailer along with the rack. That makes the “T” straight and holds well and no rattles! Get this to covert your stock truck into a kayak carrying machine. I have someone ask me where I got it every day . You will love it... 494178

Comments

Thank you for your suggestion. The anti-rattle accessory Andy is referring to is the roadmaster quiet hitch for 2 inch hitches, part # RM-061
Roadmaster Quiet Hitch for 2" Trailer Hitches
$27.94
. It tightens up the space between the hitch and the accessory to eliminate rattle.

Easy Setup and installation process. Solid construction. By far the best addition I have had to purchase for adapting my truck to compensate for my hobbies. 100% satisfied with the product. Fastest delivery I've received so far. Ordered and received within 5 days of purchase. 2 Thumbs up! Wish there were more companies out there like this. 227036

This is a great in expensive rack that gets the job done. Used it to haul my kayak on a camping trip. I was able to transport the kayak securely and still have use of my trucks bed cover to store gear. The trailer hitch rack is a bit wobbly but is easily secured with two ratcheting tie down straps secured to the tow assembly. The kayak is a bit difficult to mount with one person, but easily secures to the trailer hitch rack and roof rack with cargo straps. Definitely would recommend for someone who wants to haul a kayak or other large item, with a bed cover. 410634

Thanks for checking in, actually I just started using to rack to haul 2 kayaks now. I was only hauling one until this summer when I bought my son one. I like the rack there was a little learning curve with strapping the kayaks, but that is because they dont have the greatest anchor points and when Im hauling long distance I want to make sure that they are super secure. The rack seems to wobble a bit in the tow hitch, but was easily fixed by using cargo ratchet straps to keep it tight. All in all I like the rack, it is really easy to install, remove and store. Again, Thanks for checking in.

Texas coast, I needed some sort of way to carry my yak with my truck having a bed cover on it at the same time. This carrier works awesome, I know some of yall are thinking i wonder if it works. Well it does pretty good too. The roof carrier works great and the truck doors close flush as if the strap wasn't attached. And there isn't any leakage if it was to rain. I also pull a travel trailer so this carrier hooks into my front bumper and I am able to carry it that way as well. If you have any concerns about this product, don't because Im pleased with it and it does its job. 87818

Very easy to assemble & install. The roof rack is not heavy duty but it is adequate for the canoes & kayaks I will be using it for. It will work well for carrying extension ladders also. 498815

Here's a picture of my intall. The kit works like a charm; it's really easy to intall and remove in each of it's two configurations which is a plus for me specially for this short bed truck. I am very happy with the outcome. Thanks! 499914

I've gotta say that the pictures, videos, questions and answers about this product are 100% accurate, and very helpful! I recommend you view them all. My comments are focused on etrailer.com. I have rarely seen such a well run, organized and responsive site! When have you ever asked a question on a site, and gotten an emailed response while you are still surfing the web? Gotta love that. After researching what was available (that's what WE ALL DO, RIGHT?) I decided I wanted the Darby Extend-a-truck kayak carrier system. Since Christmas was coming, I mentioned my choice to my very generous sister-in-law, who gave it to me as a gift. Unfortunately, she purchased the components from a different site. Even after returning her purchase, and paying return freight, it was cheaper on etrailer.com! Ordered Christmas morning and delivered on January 2nd. From now on, etrailer will be the first place I go. 167663

The Darby Extend a Truck kayak carrier arrived quickly via free standard shipping after a personalized courtesy email from eTrailer thanking me for the purchase. I bought this to haul my 13' Hobie Mirage Revolution, and I was surprised at how simple it was to put up. The included single bar roof rack (Turbo Rack) was essential to evenly distribute the front end weight and avoid roof damage on my Tacoma pickup. Although I'm just somewhat disappointed that the hauler doesn't fit snugly into the 2" hitch, it allows only minimal movement during transport and hasn't impacted safety in any way I can see. And I had no issues using a couple of tie-downs to secure the rack to the truck to minimize swaying, one to secure the back end of the kayak to the rack and one to secure the front. I've only had this for a few days but immediately hauled my kayak to and from a service dealer with no issues. I've been looking for something like this for a couple of years and highly recommend this for hauling kayaks. Next up...extending at bed level to haul other stuff, too! 78862

Perfect solution for my Ram 1500 with Ramboxes and a BacFlip tonneau cover. All of the other beach/lake paraphernalia is securely locked in the bed and still accessable when you need it, and I can carry two 11 1/2 foot kayaks as well. Used a pool "noodle" on the cab rack as a cushion. Rack only takes 5 minutes to install or remove. I use anti-rattle devices at both joints. 420710

Darby Extend-a-truck carrier and single bar roof rack is just what I was looking for. Recently bought an F150 with short bed and needed something for 12' Kayak. Love the racks, fits perfect and easy to install. Have to give a thumps up to etrailer.com also. I've bought tons of stuff online but etrailer.com might have the best customer service I've ever experienced. Thanks! And with their price guarantee you really can't go wrong. 383964

I set this carrier system up in minutes. I had researched various systems and decided upon this one because it was economical and removable. The fact that the hitch extender can be used horizontally or vertically is an added bonus. I am rating it 4 stars because this combination package only comes with one foam pad. I had to call customer service about this (and I was not on hold more than 20 seconds). The person I spoke to (who was very nice and helpful) was also very surprised that only one foam pad was included. I had to purchase the second pad separately. I really think etrailer should have sent me one gratis. The other reason I am only rating this 4 stars is because I had to go out and purchase 2 additional tie-down ropes for the hitch extender. I was unaware they are required to support the extender. I only found out when I read the assembly instructions that were included in the box. The extender is very wobbly without tie-down ropes running from the post to the bumper. This is not a design flaw. It is just the way it is with 2 large pieces of metal that are fitted together with pins and clips and need to universally fit a variety of vehicles. I have only had this set-up for a short while so I cannot say how well the weld seams on these metal bars will hold up (no pun intended) over time. For the present, it works fantastic and the price was within reason. Delivery was fast and free. 545416

I purchased the Darby for my 12 Foot Kayak. I noted in the instructions that a rope was required to secure the hitch in the upright position due to its wobbly fit in the hitch receiver. I was unsure about what to expect and found that I could use a different attachment point on my truck to secure the hitch. Rear Stacks in my bed. (see pictures) Wear Point..... The product improvement feedback I would give to the manufacturer is to place a plastic molded insert into the top support tube to reduce metal on strap or rope on metal wear during transport. I understand that this is a cost but having your customer create an insert when you can create one for the customer would be in my opinion an improvement. The wind noise was minimal on the large cushions on the front carrier, thought the noise would be greater. As we all know drag is a mileage killer and any noise during travel is annoying and concerning, when you hear a noise come out of the blue when you are driving you need to stop and check. Overall great product and serves those who need a simple design multipurpose hitch, mine will be dedicated to my Yak. For those thinking of purchasing I took my Kayak out for maiden voyage with its new carrier speeds up to 75 mph and found a few improvements. I did not buy the foam pad for the front carrier. Instead I purchased foam pipe insulation and doubled it up and used good ole duct tape as the adhesive. Thick Float Noodles work if you want one of those. I will check the wear on my improvised foam. I used ratchet straps for tie downs and used my bed stakes for anchor points. I used pcs of the foam insulation to protect my straps from the metal on strap contact point and I will be fabricating an improvement because the foam is temporary. Happy Camping for those out of doors enthusiasts! 359567

The Extend-A-Bed arrived fine, I assembled it and although I wouldn't call it lightweight, it was not as heavy duty as I had expected - like for example, my old bicycle rack I purchased years ago that I mounted to the hitch on our old Suburban. However I'm sure it's up to the job it's intended for. I did notice some play where the two parts connect although probably won't be as apparent when all is cinched down. Having a Nissan Titan with "tie-rails" around the upper perimeter of the bed I plan on strapping the upright to these "rails" in the bed rather than the rear bumper - it will not only brace the pole against side to side movement (pitching) but also pull the pole forward thus helping support the weight of whatever's being carried. This is a great product for the price since you're killing two birds with one stone - you have a small roof rack system for ladders, poles, canoe/kayak, etc. as well as a support for those long heavy things you can't, or don't want to, mount up high so end up rather precariously in the bed. Now the negative part and why this is only rated three stars. There is a single pole roof "rack" that comes as part of the Extend-A-Bed kit, problem is mine arrived with nothing to attach it to the roof - no strap, no ratchet, no hooks, nada. I could get sarcastic here but I won't. Suffice it to say someone screwed up somewhere and as I can't mount the roof rack, the whole thing is useless to me. I'm hoping e-trailer will dig up whatever I'm missing and Fedex them over to me. 268461

Thought I would want to load the canoe on top of the truck and, with two people I would; however, with just myself I found loading the canoe so it extended out of the bed was so much easier. Tied it down with two belly straps and the used two Wich straps to pull it in tight to the bed. It never moved and unloading and loading it at the ramp was a breeze. It does the job and it's built to last. The only recommendation is to get two locking pins so you don't have to lock the hitch in the truck when you park it and your out on the water. 670234

I recently purchased a canoe I needed to haul with my truck. After trying several options, I finally decided to by this hitch extendable rack to use. My extend-a-truck kayak carrier with hitch mounted load extender and single bar roof rack is advertised for kayaks but it works well with my paddle boards too! The quality of the product is outstanding and it was extremely easy to install. I bought 2 ratchet straps and a cargo net to attach my boards more securely since I travel long distances. Excellent service, too! I had my product delivered in less than 3 days! 662822

AWESOME RACK I have searched high and low for a rack that would work with my Chevy Colorado while the bed cover remains on, I was going to resort to making my own until I found this one from eTrailer.com. Not only was the order process neat and swift, post order communications were precise and kept me informed. The rack was delivered right on time and the packaging was incredible. I had to wait a few days before I could try it out. I did that today. I think it took all of 10 minutes to install. Fits perfectly. This rack in very well made and no surprises, everything that was advertised as being in the box was in fact in the box (BUY AMERICAN) works first time every time!!! My plans to use this is mostly carrying my two kayaks to the lake, but I also plane to use it for some utility type jobs as well. This thing has many uses and I plan to use them all. Thank you the folks at trailer.com for helping solve my issue and at a cost that is a fraction of the alternatives. 660756

Product mounts very well and holds two Kayaks nice while allowing access to my truck bed cover storage area on my Chevy Silverado. The extend a bar that plugs into the trailer hitch is just fine and works great. The rooftop rack bar is rickety and flimsy hooks that are annoying as all HE_ _ to get to stay in place. The top roof rack was so questionable, I went out and bought permanently connected rooftop bars vs. using these. I could see the Kayaks flying off if I used what was sent, they were THAT iffy in terms of safety, stability! 523875

The kayak carrier rack works well and is simple to use. There is only one thing that I do not like about the product and that is that there is a lot of "play" or looseness with the upright bar as it attaches to the hitch. If it is not ratcheted down very tightly, there is a lot of sway, so when going over bumpy or uneven terrain, it moves side to side and back and forth. It seems like it allows the kayak to move across the front bar and doesn't seem as secure as it should be. I've not had any other issues with the product and it works as described. 513566

Comments

I has been functional, but the upright bar still sways unless it is ratcheted very tightly to the bed of the truck. Other than than, it gets the job done well.

Wobbles too much. It doesn't fit the receiver well. To much slack. 498034

Comments

Your 2 inch receiver is actually a little larger than 2 inches square, while the diameter of the steel tubing used on the Kayak Carrier is slightly smaller than 2 inches square. If both parts were exactly 2 inches, you wouldnt be able to slide the accessory into the hitch. Any manufactured product will vary slightly in size, but manufacturers regularly check to ensure their products are within tolerance. Sometimes a situation arises where the receiver tube of the hitch is at the large end of tolerance, while the hitch accessory is at the small end. This can result of the movement you describe. This is a situation where an anti-rattle device such as RM-061 would prove helpful.

  • How To Carry Two Kayaks While Towing a Trailer
  • Yes, the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender part # DTA944-968-924 can be used on the front of your 2016 Nissan Frontier with the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 65075 in order to haul your two kayaks. However, in order to secure both kayaks to the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender you are going to need an additional foam block as it only comes with enough for one kayak. For this, I recommend the Darby Foam...

  • Recommended Front Mount Hitch and Kayak Carrier for 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500
  • Starting with the front hitch for your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 I recommend the Draw-Tite # 65078 because it won't reduce the truck's ground clearance at all. Unlike the Curt alternative the hitch receiver on this unit will protrude through the front fascia instead of sitting below the bumper. I have attached an image to clarify this. The hitch features a 500 pound vertical load limit. I have also attached an installation video that you can use for reference. Then to secure your...

  • Recommended Way to Carry a Kayak for a Ford F-150
  • As long as you have a 2 inch receiver on your 2016 Ford F-150, I recommend the Thule Goalpost # TH997. This is one of our better options for kayak carriers and installs directly into your hitch. In addition to this carrier I recommend using a roof rack to secure your kayak to the roof of your truck instead of the foam blocks. If you have the SuperCrew Cab, the Rhino Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack kit is a great option. This include the Crossbars # RRVA150S-2, the Legs # RRRLKVA, and the Fit...

  • Recommended Canoe Carrier For Short Bed Truck
  • The longest load extender is the Erickson Big Bed Load Extender for 2" Hitches - 400 lbs # EM07600. This is 52-1/2" long x 48-1/2" wide. For a 16 foot canoe, there really isn't a good solution for such a short bed without going onto the roof. I recommend the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack # DTA944-968-924 for your application. If you really don't want anything on your roof, then I recommend the Malone MicroSport Trailer -...

  • How to Carry Canoe on 2004 Ford F-150 Towing Coachmen Trailer Trailer
  • Most of the Coachmen Apex travel trailers shown on their website include several common rooftop features like antennas, air conditioners, ducts and vents. The AC units tend to be fairly tall, most about 12- to 15-inches, and racks made for trailer roofs, like # RA-28, are not tall enough to clear these. Apart from that you have the matter of getting the canoe about 9 or 10 feet in the air! I can suggest a better option; using a front hitch on your 2004 F-150 along with a load support...

  • Kayak Carrier for a 2017 Ford F-150 SuperCrew
  • There are ways you can carry 138 pounds worth of kayak with your 2017 Ford F-150 but I need a little more information. Are you wanting to carry them on the roof, above the bed, in the bed, somewhere else? Will you also be towing a trailer at the same time and if so what kind of trailer (5th wheel, bumper pull)? The location you intend to carry the kayaks will determine the best options.

  • What is Needed to Haul 2 Kayaks With the Darby Hitch Extender and Crossbar Kit
  • The Darby Hitch Extender and Crossbar kit part # DTA944-968-924 comes with a foam block and straps to secure one kayak. For a second foam block you'd want the # DTA924 and then for straps you'd want the part # TH521. You'll need a quantity of two of the strap kits since the Darby does not include any.

  • Recommendation For Carrying A 14 Foot Canoe With A Short Bed Truck
  • The MaxxTow MaxxHaul Truck Bed and Roof Load Extender - 2" Hitches - 350 lbs # MT70231 has an extention length of 53-1/2 inches from center of hitch pin hole to end of extension. This will still give you about 4 feet hanging off the back of the extention with that long a canoe. You may want to consider using the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender and Single-Bar Roof Rack # DTA944-968-924 for your 14 foot canoe. This will allow for a more evenly distributed...

  • How To Carry a 100 Lb Kayak on a 2006 Toyota Tundra While Towing
  • In order to carry a kayak on your 2006 Toyota Tundra while towing a trailer I recommend the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier part # DTA944-968-924 which evenly distributes the weight of the kayak across both the roof of your vehicle and the hitch receiver. Now, the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier can be used in one of two ways. The load extender can be used on the rear and still allow you to tow your trailer if you used a multi-purpose ball mount like the Curt Multipurpose Ball...

  • Front Mounted Hitch That Fits a 2018 Ram 2500
  • For a front-mounted hitch that fits your 2018 Ram 2500 I recommend the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver # 65063 which is a bolt-on install and has a 2" receiver. From there you may be interested in a load extender such as the Darby # DTA944-968-924. I've added a link to our page with each of our carriers for you to take a look at.

  • You will be able to carry 2 kayaks on the roof of your 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 if it is a Crew Cab or Double Cab by installing a roof rack. I recommend Rhino-Rack roof rack using # RRVA150S-2 for the bars, # RRRLKVA for the feet, and # DK377 for the custom clamp kit. Then you can use kayak carrier # S512 which holds 1 kayak and then add # RRS512X which will allow you to carry a second kayak. • Will the Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier Work with a Beavertail Stealth 2000 Sneak Boat
  • The Darby Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier w/ Hitch Mounted Load Extender part # DTA944-968-924 should allow you to haul the Beavertail Stealth 2000 Sneak Boat on your 2019 Toyota Tacoma. I looked in the owner's manual to see if I could find a roof weight capacity but I was unsuccess. However, the weight of your Stealth 2000, 130 lbs will be split into two parts when using the above carrier so I don't think it is unreasonable to assume the vehicle's roof weight capacity is at least 65 lbs....

  • Recommended 2-Kayak Carrier Solution for 2015 GMC Sierra Double Cab with Folding Tonneau Cover
  • Folding tonneau covers can sometimes be tough to fit along with a ladder rack since often both will use the same or similar attachment points on the tops or sides of the bed rails. But I do have a great solution for you for transporting two 14-foot kayaks with a total weight of 150-lbs that will actually cost you a lot less than many quality ladder racks AND avoid any concerns about compatibility with your tonneau cover. The solution I recommend is a hitch-mount load support bar....

  • If you're considering the Darby Extend-A-Truck, part # DTA944-968-924, this includes the rear crossbar that you'd need to carry the kayak safely. You will have to purchase separate tie-downs for the rack, such as the Yakima Ripcord, part # Y04048, to secure the kayak to the rack. If you can place your kayaks side by side, and the total width of the two is less than 48 inches, then the Darby # DTA944-968-924 Extend-A-Truck Kayak Carrier you referenced would work great for you.
