Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

For 2010 Toyota Sequoia Limited. We installed these, AND we also installed Firestone airbags, now we are able to tow our 25' Airstream well!

2010 Toyota Sequoia- Timbrens helped with leveling and towing our 25 foot Airstream. However, we still needed Firestone Airbags. No problem with the Timbrens.

2008 ToyotaSequoia

2008 Sequoia, these are great but only one inch longer than the OEM bump stops. Not sue if there is one that is longer. The independent suspension on these SUV's have the bump stop at an angle too, so I'm curious to see how effective they are. Gave them 5 stars though because the product is amazing technology.

For the 08 Sequoia, its a 14mm offset box end wrench to remove. Clean off the top of the exposed bolt if they are old like mine and some PB blaster a couple days before helps. You'll need to push the OEM bump stop against the frame as it loosens to keep it from spinning with the nut. New ones are a 17mm so you'll need a 17mm offset box end wrench up top and a deep 17mm socket inside to reach. Shove some shop towel pieces into your 17mm socket to keep the bolt from falling in. I removed the tires for easier access.

My boat gives me about 500 lbs. of tongue weight so I get about 1.75 inches of sag and that's with the Firestone in coil air bags. I was trying to reduce my sag to 1 inch. Not sure these will help with that. If you are starting from scratch, I'd recommend the Airlift HD bags. I can only run about 30-35 max psi in my bags but with the Airlift bags, you can get up to 50 psi easily. I'd go that route, upgrade to a stiffer spring and use these new bump stops as security.

My 08 has 230k so next summer I'll probably take my own advice on better bags and new springs.

Great communication and shipping was quicker than expected. I love etrailer. Always accurate with their descriptions.

After a year. Timbren has held up excellent. I tow a 30ft travel trailer with about 7200lbs and completely eliminates the sag along with an E2 WDH. I definitely recommend this product

Easy to install and functions as advertised. My truck handles off-road bumps much better.

This was very easy to install. It does require removing the wheel to install them but that is the most difficult part of the install so it's a 1 banana job. As far as function they work as advertised. I used these to tow a 5500 lb trailer. Also had a Thule box on top of the Sequoia and 4 passengers. There was a little sag (rear lower than the front) while towing but not bad maybe an inch or less. Going over bumps felt controlled with no harshness. I have used air bags on other vehicles. Although they allow more control of the ride height I don't like having to spend several hundred for an in cab controller or fiddling with adjusting the air frequently. These are a good compromise for me and did a fine job.

I purchased the Timbrens for my 2014 Toyota Sequoia Limited without the automatic leveling suspension option. I completed the installation without having to remove the wheel by jacking up the vehicle high enough to access the top mounting bolt of the factory part. As advertised, the clearance was about 1 to 1.5 inches. They went on without an issue and have not tested them with my boat trailer as of yet. I am positive that the Timbrens are going to alleviate about 3 - 4 inches of the vehicle sag that I was experiencing with the trailer. I will follow-up with pictures at a later time.

2012 ToyotaSequoia

These were extremely easy to install, hardest part was getting the old fasteners off (as usual). Taken together with my Weight Distributing Hitch, these really take the lean out of my 2012 Sequoia when it is pulling my 7600 lb travel trailer. Great product!

2008 ToyotaSequoia

I have a 2008 Toyota Sequoia with independent rear suspension. I had a lot of “squat” when hauling the boat and car trailer. These made a significant improvement helping with the ride and tire wear. Highly recommend and super easy to install. Etrailer shipped these fast!

I have greater contol and vehicle stability pulling my camper since installing these Timbrens. Great product. Won’t pull a camper without them.

Awesome! Tammie was great. Super knowledgeable, and the kind of person that truly cares about why you called and WANTS to help with a solution! She not only helped with the initial call, but also sent a follow-up email to make sure I got my product. As for the product, I can’t wait to install it.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I was back and forth between Timbren SES and airbags. Everyone in forums were very biased toward air bags and very opinionated on the Timbren SES. Yet I could find one instance in which someone tried the Timbrens, were dissatisfied and then switched to air bags. I called etrailer, Jamie recommended this product to me for my application. Installation on a 20-year-old truck had me nervous, I live in the Midwest and have a lot of salt. Installation was a breeze, and I have a B&W 5th Wheel Hitch (turnover gooseneck ball). This made the install a bit more challenging simply because I had a large bolt through the frame directly above my bump stop nut. If you do this install with the B&W Hitch, get a set of gear wrenches, or borrow a buddies 15mm and 9/16 wrenches. You need the 15mm to remove the factory nut and the 9/16 to install the Timbrens. I sprayed wd40 two nights in a row prior to installation to make sure I had good penetration of oil - I didn't break a bolt or a knuckle. I recommend installing the Timbren spring to the mounting plate, then install the mounting plate with Timbren to the truck. I didn’t need to remove my wheels or my spare, I jacked up the back under the hitch, used jack stands and let the weight of the axle separate the rear end from the truck giving ample room for the installation. After installation, I checked the clearance of the TImbren from the axle and had 1 inch of clearance. I installed my 1200-pound pickup camper and the springs just started touching the axle. I have a 21-foot fiberglass boat and seen about a 1/4-inch drop after I connected it to my truck. These things work and best part is – no maintenance and no danger of shifting weight if an airbag lost pressure or was punctured/damaged. I hunt with this vehicle and drive through thick brush and timber, I feel airbags wouldn’t hold up with the abuse I put my truck through. The Timbren SES system took the squat out of my truck and made the drop from the connection of my heavy boat hardly noticeable. Thank you etrailer, great experience as usual!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

The hardest part was the de-installation of the factory bump stop. Installation of the Timbren’s was simple and easy.

My truck is 2008 F250 V10 Crew Cab 4x4 with factory overload springs. I have a B&W fifth wheel & gooseneck hitch installed. I did notice the difference in towing my 34’ fifth wheel trailer. The ride and handling was improved. I would recommend them.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

They may be a great product but they did not work on my 22 f350. Even with the spacers provided they would not make contact with the trucks axle even with a heavy slide in camper. If I am going to keep them I’ll have to make welding modifications to extend the bracket so it will work on my truck model pictures with and without the camper loaded.

I would like to update my review to say that Timbren came through and made my application work by sending me the right parts so my truck doesn’t squat and it handles my truck camper much better. Timbren has great customer service

I see what youre saying here. From the photos, it looks like you have everything set up the way it should be. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I installed Timbren on front and rear of Georgetown motorhome. The install was easy and the improvement in overall handling was noticeable. No more bottoming out on bad roads, and a reduction in sway or lean in and out of turns. Worth the money, especially in conjunction with my other bolt on upgrades. Safety steer, Rear sway bar, and Rear trac bar

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

The Timbren rear suspension enhancement system helped with the truck swaying side to side when the slide in camper is on the truck.
The photos show right and left rear with Timbren’s installed (2 photos), with slide in camper on the truck (2 photos) and when the camper was removed (2photos).

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Very simple to remove and install. I took all of 15 minutes without even removing the wheels

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

They definitely support and did lift my 2014 toyota tundra up about 1.5 inches.
This application with my weight has trunk riding on the cushions all the time.
That has teavel and bounce issues that do make some driving situations interesting.
I may go ahead and replace with airbags but for now support things well!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

One of the timbrens appeared to be installed once and removed. Box said it was 2018 on it.

The second spring does look rough and I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. I am not sure what the 2018 refers to however I know that it is not a manufacturing date. I checked and we have had recent stock checked into our warehouse. We do not have any remaining stock from 2018.

  • Timbren Suspension Enhancement on a 2011 Toyota 4X4 Sequoia
The description does mention an axle, but the principle is the same. Basically, right next to the rear coil springs on the 2011 Toyota Sequoia, there is a factory bump stop. You will remove the factory bump stop and install the Timbren system, # TTORSEQ1 in its place. That is the extent of the installation. I have included a link to our FAQ article on Timbren systems for you.
