Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement Installation - 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Today on our 2012 Toyota 4runner, we'll be installing the Timbren rear suspension enhancement system, part number TTORSEQ. Now to begin our install, we've already gone ahead and raised the rear axle and now we'll remove the rear wheels. Once we remove the rear wheels, it will expose the manufacturer's bump stop just above the rear axle. Now to remove the manufactured bump stop, we'll remove the two fasteners that secure it here to the frame. Once the fasteners are removed, we'll go ahead and set the bump stop aside. Next, we'll need to assemble our new Timbren ion spring. The spring will need to be attached to the upper bracket and then through the top of the spring. Next we'll take our upper bracket and thread it onto the bolt.

Now that we've got our bolt started, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. We'll use the new bolt and flat washer provided. Next we'll take the ion spring and bracket and secure it directly to the vehicle, replacing the manufacturer's bump stop. As we tighten down the bolts, we'll make sure we shift the upper bracket along the slotted holes in the upper bracket so that the spring is centered over the axle. Once we have it centered, we'll go ahead and finalize tightening down our bolts.

Now with one side done, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the other side. With everything tightened down, we're ready to put the wheels back on and hit the road. That does it for the install of the Timbren rear suspension enhancement system, part number TTORSEQ on our 2012 Toyota 4runner. .

I am dealing with Timbren. The washer for mounting the rubber spring to the mounting plate clearance hole is too small for the bolt diameter. The washer is not something you can get out without damaging in my opinion. The bolt also will not thread completely into the mounting plate because of poor threads ( not tapped correctly). Galling of bolt if you try to tighten. Very poor QC or inspection at Timbren or wherever. Once again, working eith Timbren on this. Maybe you should check you kits at etrailer!! 704185

Comments

I pulled the kits we have in stock and they check out fine. The washer inside the spring had the same diameter as the spring for the bolt. Could you send in a photo of your kit?

Purchased for Lexus GX460. Solves rear sag problem when towing with medium to heavy trailers. I don’t notice any difference in the ride when not towing a trailer with the helper springs. Should really come standard with the vehicle I’m the first place in order to utilize the towing capacity. I would highly recommend this cheap fix. 468046

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer. 560925

Timbren are working fine. Towing is much more controlled. I am glad i purchased them. I don’t notice any ride difference when running empty.

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

My review is on the ordering and installation only as I haven't hooked up my boat to test them out yet. Ordering and deliver was easy/fast and the installation was a piece of cake - probably 10 minutes total for both sides. Seems like good quality too. 488906

2017 Toyota 4Runner

Piece of cake to install, has no effect on normal ride (which is good). It's too soon for me to give any meaningful feedback re use when vehicle is loaded but everything is positive so far and I can definitely see how they would help under heavy loads. Compared to the standard bump stops these are almost twice the height so the axle will definitely hit these before they would've hit the OE version and give the heavy duty nature of these, combined with the "hollow" design I can envision how they'll add to the stability of the suspension under max loads. 450768

The simple fix for the sagging situation. With these new Timbren 'bump stops' in place, both my camp trailer and vehicle *(2006 5 Runner---better than a 4 Runner) ride level and smooth...and even looks cooler than cool. 264664

Install was a breeze. Its been a year and I can definitely say they make a difference. I used to go over some deep pot holes or a deep depression in road surface and my teeth would jar. Now when this happens no bad reaction as before install.Very happy with them.

This is regarding the FRONT installation. Which is everything I'd hoped for. The truck still rides great but no longer bottoms out over any pebble in the road. The front end no longer heals over in turns. I wanted to install a rear kit but it arrived as a mis matched box of parts. To be continued. 231435

These worked great on my 2003 4Runner Limited. I can tow my 16 / 7 ft. trailer with very little squat on the rear axel ... The install was super easy and I didn't need a jack-stand... Just a wrench... That's It !! I took some heavy dips on some Mexican roads with a 7,000 lbs trailer (700 lbs tongue weight). Also the rear cab had 500 lbs..... I was doing 55 mph and I believe it saved me from a hard impact. Courtney B... (the rep)... Recommend the product and I couldn't be happier! 273549

Received the product and installation was very easy. The longest thing to do in the process is taking your tires off. Also make sure you have a vice or c- clamp because to tight the rubber piece to the bracket takes a lot of torque. Have not been able to test it will update my comments later 499383

I put TTORSEQ on the rear of my 2003 4Runner Sport, I had noticed the 4Runner had settled over the years particularly in the rear when I tow a Chalet camper. I was looking for helper springs or replacing the rear springs (very expensive). I was not aware of this type of suspension support but it came up on a Google search. They work great! There is a significant difference when towing the camper. ONE recommendation for Timbren. In the installation instructions include torque values for the bolt attaching the bump stop to the bracket. I was surprised at how much torque was required and initially thought Timbren had sent me the wrong bolts - they had not. 281057

Installation was relatively straightforward and took about an hour. Make sure that you center the enhancers directly over the axle.....FYI-if you center over the axle, the bolts may not be centered in their slots when attaching the units to the frame. I towed my 3200 lb boat trailer about 35 miles today for the first time since the installation and there was a definite difference in the ride and feel. Big bumps or variations in the pavement felt much better.....no more bouncing. Definitely a must have for towing with your 4Runner. I would have rated 5 stars but I felt the price was a bit high for the product. 213689

2006 Toyota Sequoia

I’ve had these for a year on my 2006 Toyota Sequoia. Purchased them after taking my wife’s horse on a long road trip where we damaged the trailer jack on our horse trailer. The Toyota has a sport suspension and would bottom out when we hit big bumps. These keep it from bottoming out and also help prevent trailer sway. Affordable and very easy to install. Unlike sway bar nothing to hook up when towing and it doesn’t change how the vehicle drives. Completely satisfied! 565135

Received the product quickly and proceeded to install the next day. Removing the existing rubber block was simple, but when I assembled the rubber suspension enhancers, I thought that the bolts had bottomed out before they were tight against the mounting plate. I called etrailer's help line and they suggested that I try mounting them and then tightening the bolt. I did not have the room to do this on the suv, so I "mounted" the plate to my work bench and with a lot of force, the enhancers tightened up perfectly. I believe that this is done to keep the bolts from loosening over time. The rest of the install went great and a test ride confirmed that things were installed correctly. 304790

This product is everything it is advertised to be and more. I needed to transport a 380 pound ALS wheelchair to the VA for an evaluation. A 450 mile round trip. With a total hitch weight at almost 500 pounds with the carrier and the chair, my little stock 2004 4x4 4-runner was not up to the task. I just happened to see your product doing a search for suspension products and felt it may work for me. It is perfect!!!! Kept the rear from sagging, felt great over the bumps and keeps the natural suspension feel even with all the extra weight on the back. They are very simple to install and a perfect addition to my suspension. It will stay for the life of my vehicle...Thanks 3-3-2016 239325

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

We just took our first trp (towing) with the "Timbrens", today. Our Travel Trailer is about 8,000 lbs so I'm sure that they engaged fully. They have smoothed out the ride considerably and there is a definite lowering of the front end of the truck. I noticed that when just my wife and I ride in the truck, there is no noticeable difference; as they are not engaged. Add 2 more people in the back and now the ride gets a whole lot stiffer, as they probably engage even with this "little" extra weight. It appears that the real gain is when I add a full load of the trailer, extra fuel and other things packed into the bed of the truck. I believe that we made the right decision having these put in, in place of the OEM rubbers. It was a good decision. I recommend them highly if you're going to tow something heavy. 523578

  • The 3,000 pound capacity of the Timbren springs # TTORSEQ is the capacity of the system or, in other words, the amount of weight pushing straight down on them that they can handle. So if you put 2,000 pounds of stuff over the rear axle of your 2014 Lexus GX 460 the springs would still have capacity to spare. Of course you wouldn't put that much weight in the vehicle but that is just an extreme example. If you towed a trailer that weighed 6,500 pounds the tongue weight would be in the...

  • Recommended Rear Suspension System For 2013 Toyota 4Runner For Towing And Off-Road Use
  • If you are planning on off-road travel with your 4Runner, I recommend the Timbren Active Off-Road Bumpstops, part # TABSTORSEQ. These are designed to cushion the ride of your truck and absorb the shock when bottoming out when you are off-road as you said or when there is a load on the rear of your truck. When you install the Timbrens, the instructions state you want between 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches of clearance between the rubber spring and the contact point on your truck. This means you...

  • Height of Timbren # TTORSEQ and Spacers Needed for Lifted Truck
  • I went out to our warehouse and measured an overall height with the mounting bracket of 5 inches for the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORSEQ. Timbren recommends having a 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inches between the spring and the axle when the truck is empty so if you measure between the frame where your bump stop is mounted and the axle and get greater than 6-1/2 inches you will want to fill that gap with a spacer or two. We have 1 inch Spacers with # TA25723-90AD00 or 1/2...

  • Is Weight Capacity of Timbren Springs for 2012 Toyota 4Runner for the Gross Trailer Weight
  • The capacity rating on Timbren springs such as # TABSTORSEQ or # TTORSEQ for your 2012 Toyota 4Runner is the vertical load capacity of the springs as a set. So in other words it is how much weight pushing down on them they can handle. In either case they are rated for far more weight than the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle itself . . . unless you plan on towing a 30,000 to 60,000 pound trailer! (Please don't attempt to tow a 30K to 60K pound trailer.) Given the weight of your...

  • Can Timbren System be Used With Weight Distribution on 2007 Toyota 4Runner
  • With a properly rated weight distribution system that is properly set up you should not need a Timbren. If you are still getting sag then one of three things is happening. Either you are just exceeding the towing capacity of your vehicle which is why the WDH hitch can't keep up, your system is rated too low, or you don't have enough spring bar tension. That being said a Timbren kit part # TTORSEQ is a fit for your 2007 Toyota 4Runner and would give you additional suspension support....

  • Torque Specs for Timbren Rear Suspension System # TTORSEQ
  • I spoke with my contact at Timbren and he said they don't have an official torque spec for the hardware on the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORSEQ you referenced but tightening all the hardware to around 20 foot-pounds will be sufficient. These springs are confirmed to fit your 2012 Lexus GX 460 and feature a 3,000 pound capacity. I have attached the written instructions and a video demonstration that you can check out as well.

  • How to Prevent Sag While Towing with a Lifted 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • As long as you are using the factory coil springs on your 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser then the 2-1/2" lift kit you have in the rear will not be a problem. If you have a set of taller/stiffer aftermarket coil springs then you would need to test these for yourself as the manufacturer does not test fit with aftermarket coil springs, just the factory ones. If it turns out that you do have aftermarket coil springs and the airbags won't work then we still have an option for you in the Timbren Rear...

  • Suspension Enhancement for 2018 Toyota 4Runner to Reduce Towing Sag
  • You'll have to check the owners manual of your 2018 Toyota 4Runner to determine if it is rated for use with a weight distribution system. Or it can be listed on the hitch as well. You'll see two sets of towing capacities most likely there. One as "weight carrying" and one with "weight distribution. Otherwise you'd want to look into suspension enhancement like the Timbren kit part # TTORSEQ which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and will give you additional rear suspension support...

  • How Close to Vehicle Frame Should Timbren Springs Sit Once Installd
  • Timbren likes to recommend 1 inch between the axle and the Timbren when the truck is unloaded. We have found that this works the best. For a 1/2 inch spacer you would need the part # TA25722-90P00 and then for a 1 inch spacer part # A25723-90AH00. One of each of these will work great to get your Timbren setup right where it needs to be.

  • Solution for Timbren System that is Spaced too Far Away from Vehicle Axle
  • Timbren likes to recommend 1 inch between the axle and the Timbren when the truck is unloaded. We have found that this works the best. What you would need then is a 1 inch spacer part # A25723-90AH00 and a new longer bolt that you would have to source elsewhere and your Timbren would be properly setup on your vehicle. The spring being just slightly off-center like yours would not be a problem either.

  • Will Timbren Suspension Help Level a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser That Has More Weight on Passenger Side
  • The Timbren suspension enhancement will replace the axle bump stops on your 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. They will work independently front and rear, and side to side. So, when you are carrying a heavier load on the passenger side of the vehicle it will compress the hollow rubber spring and become more rigid as the load is applied. This will help keep the vehicle from leaning heavily to that side. It will not affect the empty ride of your FJ Cruiser. The Timbren suspension has a weight capacity...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2018 Lexus GX 460
  • For your 2018 Lexus GX 460 we do have suspension enhancement available like the Timbren Kit part # TTORSEQ, but we do not have any air bag setups at this time (April 2018). The advantage the Timbrens have is that they don't require any air pressure maintenance and have a simpler install.

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2006 Toyota 4Runner with 1 Inch Rear Lift Kit
  • If you are getting a lift kit on your 2006 Toyota 4Runner then air bags that fit inside the coil springs are not going to work. There are no spacers to make up for the additional space created by the lift kit for the coil spring air bags. The exception is if you were to have a body lift instead of a suspension lift since in that case there would not be any extra space. There are spacers available for the Timbren systems though so I recommend going with # TTORSEQ. If the lift kit does...

  • Solution for Reducing Rear Sag on Off-Road Toyota 4Runner with Trailer Connected
  • The only suspension enhancement product available that is confirmed to fit the rear axle of your 2017 Toyota 4Runner is the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TTORSEQ. These jounce-style springs will do a nice job of reducing rear sag on your vehicle, however they likely aren't the best solution for your particular application. This is because jounce-style springs like these are going to reduce the space between the axle and rubber stops, which means you will certainly feel them...

  • Suspension Enhancements for a 2015 Toyota 4Runner with Taller Rear Coil Springs
  • In order to make sure that we get the correct Firestone Coil-Rite Air Helper Springs for you I would need you to take a few measurements. The measurements I would need are the inside diameter of the coil spring as well as inside height while the vehicle is sitting at ride height and the bump stop is removed. Once you obtain this information I would then be able to make sure you get the correct kit. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to offer any recommendations without these measurements....

  • Will Timbren Jounce Spring TTORSEQ Make Off-Road Ride Quality Rough
  • Timbren rear axle jounce spring kits, like # TTORSEQ that fits your 2005 Lexus GX 470, are normally not engaged with the axle with the vehicle unloaded, meaning not full of passengers and/or cargo and not loaded by trailer tongue weight. If you were to be on a rough off-road surface with the vehicle unloaded you would be likely to feel the springs engage the axle when a wheel suddenly climbs up out of a rut. Since these springs are rated for 3000-lbs they are pretty stiff. They will...

This kit is confirmed to fit your 2015 Toyota 4Runner so unless you have lift on your 4Runner it will fit perfectly. It's hard to come up with a WD system for a lower rated setup though. Most applications with that low of a tongue weight either have hitches not rated for WD systems or the WD system just isn't needed. • Can a Weight Distribution System be Used on a Boat Trailer With a Breakaway Tongue
