Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your Toyota 4Runner sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your Toyota 4Runner level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your Toyota 4Runner. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - TTORSEQ Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number TTORSEQ, this is the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System. It is going to be vehicle specific so to see if it's going to fit your particular year, make, and model you can refer to the vehicle list at the bottom of the product page. This system is designed to improve suspension handling and safety. It's going to provide additional support as needed so you always have a nice, smooth, comfortable ride. It's actually going to allow the leaf springs plenty of movement while cushioning lighter loads so it will not affect the empty ride of the vehicle. It's going to become more rigid as more weight is added.

When doing that it's going to increase stability, providing better performance while hauling heavy loads, and it's also designed to help reduce vehicle sag. This system is designed to work independently side-to-side so it's going to help compensate for off center loads. It's also going to reduce body roll when swerving and turning corners. The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System is going to act as shock absorbers which is going to take the impact of bumps and rough roads, ultimately extending the life of your vehicle's suspension system. This is going to include two hollow rubber springs, the vehicle specific brackets, and all the hardware that's necessary for a simple installation. It's going to offer a capacity of three thousand pounds, just be sure not to exceed the vehicle's weight carrying capacity.

It is designed to work with a suspension system that's in good working order. It's a really simple installation. You will need to remove your already installed bump stop. What you can do is on the hollow spring there's actually a flat washer located on the inside there so you'll take one of the larger bolts and you're going to feed it up through that flat washer, making sure it goes through the center, and you're going to feed it all the way up until it comes through this hole so you can use a socket wrench with an extended adapter on it and the appropriate size socket. Get it up through the hole and then you're actually going to thread it into this portion here. That's already got the built-in threads in there.

All you have to do is thread it in and get it nice and tight and secure. Do that on both sides. Then basically you have the unit assembled. Once you have these two elements together you would use the existing holes on the frame of the vehicle and you would install the smaller bolts with the flat washers, bring them up through the bottom, and tighten them down into the weld nuts on the frame. Once you have that done on both sides your system would be installed and you'd be all set and ready to go. The overall height of one of the bump stops, or one of the springs, measuring from end to end, is going to give us a measurement of about three and five-eighths of an inch.

That's going to do it for today's review of part number TTORSEQ. This is the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System. .

Installation was relatively straightforward and took about an hour. Make sure that you center the enhancers directly over the axle.....FYI-if you center over the axle, the bolts may not be centered in their slots when attaching the units to the frame. I towed my 3200 lb boat trailer about 35 miles today for the first time since the installation and there was a definite difference in the ride and feel. Big bumps or variations in the pavement felt much better.....no more bouncing. Definitely a must have for towing with your 4Runner. I would have rated 5 stars but I felt the price was a bit high for the product. 213689

These worked great on my 2003 4Runner Limited. I can tow my 16 / 7 ft. trailer with very little squat on the rear axel ... The install was super easy and I didn't need a jack-stand... Just a wrench... That's It !! I took some heavy dips on some Mexican roads with a 7,000 lbs trailer (700 lbs tongue weight). Also the rear cab had 500 lbs..... I was doing 55 mph and I believe it saved me from a hard impact. Courtney B... (the rep)... Recommend the product and I couldn't be happier! 273549

Install was a breeze. Its been a year and I can definitely say they make a difference. I used to go over some deep pot holes or a deep depression in road surface and my teeth would jar. Now when this happens no bad reaction as before install.Very happy with them.

This is regarding the FRONT installation. Which is everything I'd hoped for. The truck still rides great but no longer bottoms out over any pebble in the road. The front end no longer heals over in turns. I wanted to install a rear kit but it arrived as a mis matched box of parts. To be continued. 231435

Piece of cake to install, has no effect on normal ride (which is good). It's too soon for me to give any meaningful feedback re use when vehicle is loaded but everything is positive so far and I can definitely see how they would help under heavy loads. Compared to the standard bump stops these are almost twice the height so the axle will definitely hit these before they would've hit the OE version and give the heavy duty nature of these, combined with the "hollow" design I can envision how they'll add to the stability of the suspension under max loads. 450768

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

I put TTORSEQ on the rear of my 2003 4Runner Sport, I had noticed the 4Runner had settled over the years particularly in the rear when I tow a Chalet camper. I was looking for helper springs or replacing the rear springs (very expensive). I was not aware of this type of suspension support but it came up on a Google search. They work great! There is a significant difference when towing the camper. ONE recommendation for Timbren. In the installation instructions include torque values for the bolt attaching the bump stop to the bracket. I was surprised at how much torque was required and initially thought Timbren had sent me the wrong bolts - they had not. 281057

The simple fix for the sagging situation. With these new Timbren 'bump stops' in place, both my camp trailer and vehicle *(2006 5 Runner---better than a 4 Runner) ride level and smooth...and even looks cooler than cool. 264664

Received the product and installation was very easy. The longest thing to do in the process is taking your tires off. Also make sure you have a vice or c- clamp because to tight the rubber piece to the bracket takes a lot of torque. Have not been able to test it will update my comments later 499383

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer. 560925

2006 Toyota Sequoia

I’ve had these for a year on my 2006 Toyota Sequoia. Purchased them after taking my wife’s horse on a long road trip where we damaged the trailer jack on our horse trailer. The Toyota has a sport suspension and would bottom out when we hit big bumps. These keep it from bottoming out and also help prevent trailer sway. Affordable and very easy to install. Unlike sway bar nothing to hook up when towing and it doesn’t change how the vehicle drives. Completely satisfied! 565135

Purchased for Lexus GX460. Solves rear sag problem when towing with medium to heavy trailers. I don’t notice any difference in the ride when not towing a trailer with the helper springs. Should really come standard with the vehicle I’m the first place in order to utilize the towing capacity. I would highly recommend this cheap fix. 468046

Received the product quickly and proceeded to install the next day. Removing the existing rubber block was simple, but when I assembled the rubber suspension enhancers, I thought that the bolts had bottomed out before they were tight against the mounting plate. I called etrailer's help line and they suggested that I try mounting them and then tightening the bolt. I did not have the room to do this on the suv, so I "mounted" the plate to my work bench and with a lot of force, the enhancers tightened up perfectly. I believe that this is done to keep the bolts from loosening over time. The rest of the install went great and a test ride confirmed that things were installed correctly. 304790

This product is everything it is advertised to be and more. I needed to transport a 380 pound ALS wheelchair to the VA for an evaluation. A 450 mile round trip. With a total hitch weight at almost 500 pounds with the carrier and the chair, my little stock 2004 4x4 4-runner was not up to the task. I just happened to see your product doing a search for suspension products and felt it may work for me. It is perfect!!!! Kept the rear from sagging, felt great over the bumps and keeps the natural suspension feel even with all the extra weight on the back. They are very simple to install and a perfect addition to my suspension. It will stay for the life of my vehicle...Thanks 3-3-2016 239325

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I have a 2013 Chrysler Town &Country that I load down with a roof and a rear rack storage. I was having issues with the rear sitting so low that I couldn't see the top of the rear tires and would occasionally bottom out. Now that these Timbrins have been installed I lose about 3/4 of an inch ride height compared to the 3+ inches I was losing before. It's still a little too early to determine if I'm completely satisfied, so I'll try to provide an update after traveling from Houston to Michigan and back during the holidays. The ride is definitely more firm(when loaded down with the extra storage), which is to be expected, but wouldn't call it jarring. The wife and kids will let me know soon enough. ;) One thing to note about the installation video linked by etrailer in regards to these Chrysler/Dodge minivans... I don't have access to a full vehicle lift, so I had to use a coil spring compressor to pull the coil springs, which is not a big deal because they can be rented(for free with some places) from your local auto parts store. But, they don't just pull out like the video suggests. Also, as others have recommended, disconnect the shock from the bottom, NOT the top. I'm not a mechanic, but not a complete novice. I experienced a few hiccups from following the etrailer video, but was able to work them out with the right tools and patience. 459059

One year update: We have taken two lengthy1000+ mile road trips in our 2013 Chrysler Town & Country with roof and rear rack storage and all we can say is the Timbren suspension upgrade is simply awesome. Our van no longer sags in the rear when loaded down and the suspension changes are practically unnoticed, especially when the van is not loaded at all. I highly recommend this suspension upgrade to anyone who plans on towing or loading up their Town & Country with extra weight.

STILL GREAT! Been on 2 road trips totaling 35,000 miles, to include The Dalton Highway to the North Slope and Deadhorse and across the plains states at 90 MPH and they have worked beautifully. Best investment I have made for my truck. P.S. Have a truck camper so all the weight is on the truck, not just the tongue weight.

Works like a charm! Installed in 15 minutes. Had them for a year now on my 2013 Tundra 4x4 double cab. Helps to level out the sag from the travel trailer load (although not perfect and leveling is not entirely their purpose - airbags for that if you want) and keeps the up/down undulations to a minimum on the road. Recommend them fully! 258206

These jounce-style springs will do a nice job of reducing rear sag on your vehicle, however they likely aren't the best solution for your particular application. This is because jounce-style springs like these are going to reduce the space between the axle and rubber stops, which means you will certainly feel them...

  • Improving Ride Quality on a 2015 Lexus GX 460 Towing a Trailer on Rough Roads
  • Using Timbren helper springs on your 2015 Lexus GX 460 will improve the ride quality on those rough roads. It may not completely eliminate everything but it will be a vast improvement. What is likely happening is the weight of the trailer is pulling down on the vehicle and compressing the factory suspension so that there isn't as much space for it to travel up and down. Hit a bump and it will bottom out sooner. For front help springs I recommend # TTOFTAC4A and for the rear # TTORSEQ. Another...

  • Helper Spring Suspension Options for 2006 Toyota 4Runner
  • Since you don't continually carry loads in your cargo area, I'd recommend the Timbren # TTORSEQ aeon springs. The Timbren springs don't have any effect on ride until the extra weight is added to the rear of your vehicle. As more weight is added, the springs will get stiffer. The springs will not increase the cargo capacity of your vehicle, but they will help level our your ride height when you're carrying the heavy equipment around. Air suspension systems like # F4135 are great, but...

  • Timbren Front & Rear Bumpstop Options for 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4x4
  • The Expert Answer that you are referring to is for a 2012 Toyota Tundra 4x4. The 2012 Tundra has different rear bumpstops than your 2007 FJ Cruiser 4x4. The part # TABSTORSEQ that fits your Cruiser will not fit on the Tundra. Timbren offers a few different options for you to add some suspension enhancement for your Cruiser and it all depends on how you plan on using it. The Rear Off-Road Bumpstops # TABSTORSEQ are rated for 6,000 lbs whereas the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2001 Lexus LX 470 with 4-Way
  • The P3 Brake Controller part # 90195 is an excellent choice for a brake controller so you are off to a great start. To convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install a brake controller all you would need is the part # ETBC7. This comes with everything needed so you would not need the other components you referenced. I attached an install video plus installation instructions for you to check out as well.

  • Solution for Timbren System that is Spaced too Far Away from Vehicle Axle
  • Timbren likes to recommend 1 inch between the axle and the Timbren when the truck is unloaded. We have found that this works the best. What you would need then is a 1 inch spacer part # A25723-90AH00 and a new longer bolt that you would have to source elsewhere and your Timbren would be properly setup on your vehicle. The spring being just slightly off-center like yours would not be a problem either.

  • Will Timbren Suspension Enhancement Improve Ride On 2012 Toyota 4Runner When Empty
  • Installing a suspension enhancement system like the Timbren Vehicle Suspension, part # TTORSEQ will not affect the ride of your 2012 Toyota 4Runner when empty. The system is designed to help the ride when a heavy load is placed in your vehicle. It will work independently side-to-side to help compensate uneven loads and takes the majority of the bumps when traveling on rough roads, while reducing body roll on turns. I am not aware of a system that will lower your 4Runner. You will...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2016 LXE Aliner
  • If you think your tongue weight will be at least 250 lbs the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0600 will work great. It sounds like you are really close if not over the figure. It's hard to come up with a WD system for a lower rated setup though. Most applications with that low of a tongue weight either have hitches not rated for WD systems or the WD system just isn't needed. To install a ball you'll need a thin walled socket like # ALL643216. For a 2 inch ball you would want...

  • Timbren Suspension Enhancement for a 2011 Toyota FJ-Cruiser Trail Edition
  • Adding suspension enhancement like Timbrens will help with sag and increase stability and ride quality. If your 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser is a 4-wheel drive model, for the front you can use # TTOFTAC4A that you have referenced. There is no option for the front if it is a 2-wheel drive model. For the rear if it is 2- or 4-wheel drive use # TTORSEQ. I have included links to the instructions for both sets for you to view. I have also included a link to our FAQ article on Timbren suspension...

  • Will Timbren Suspension Help Level a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser That Has More Weight on Passenger Side
  • The Timbren suspension enhancement will replace the axle bump stops on your 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. They will work independently front and rear, and side to side. So, when you are carrying a heavier load on the passenger side of the vehicle it will compress the hollow rubber spring and become more rigid as the load is applied. This will help keep the vehicle from leaning heavily to that side. It will not affect the empty ride of your FJ Cruiser. The Timbren suspension has a weight capacity...

  • What is the Height of a Timbren # TTORSEQ Bump Stop
  • If you check out the attached review video you will see that at the 2:33 mark he measures one of the bump stops that comes with the Timbren # TTORSEQ and it has an overall height measurement of 3-5/8". This kit is confirmed to fit your 2015 Toyota 4Runner so unless you have lift on your 4Runner it will fit perfectly. Since you only experience some sag when you are towing your tent trailer and carrying your bike rack I really wouldn't go with an air bag system. The installation is more...

  • Compatibility of Daystar 3/2 Leveling Kit with Timbren Spring # TTORSEQ in 2004 Toyota 4Runner 4WD
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Jounce Spring System # TTORSEQ, like all such suspension enhancement kits, is intended to be installed on a vehicle whose OEM suspension components are still in good working order. An aftermarket product like the Timbrens, good as they are, do not have the ability to correct for the sag from worn-out springs. They are intended to provide additional support to a functional suspension that is under load. According to the Daystar website the rear leveling kit...

  • Can Timbren System be Used With Weight Distribution on 2007 Toyota 4Runner
  • With a properly rated weight distribution system that is properly set up you should not need a Timbren. If you are still getting sag then one of three things is happening. Either you are just exceeding the towing capacity of your vehicle which is why the WDH hitch can't keep up, your system is rated too low, or you don't have enough spring bar tension. That being said a Timbren kit part # TTORSEQ is a fit for your 2007 Toyota 4Runner and would give you additional suspension support....

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2006 Toyota 4Runner with 1 Inch Rear Lift Kit
  • If you are getting a lift kit on your 2006 Toyota 4Runner then air bags that fit inside the coil springs are not going to work. There are no spacers to make up for the additional space created by the lift kit for the coil spring air bags. The exception is if you were to have a body lift instead of a suspension lift since in that case there would not be any extra space. There are spacers available for the Timbren systems though so I recommend going with # TTORSEQ. If the lift kit does...

  • Can a Weight Distribution System be Used on a Boat Trailer With a Breakaway Tongue
  • Unfortunately a weight distribution system cannot be used on a trailer with a breakaway tongue. The breakaway style tongue cannot handle the additional pressure that is applied to the tongue by the weight distribution system when distributing weight and controlling trailer sway. If you are having trouble with the rear of your 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser sagging when towing your boat trailer, then you may be interested in the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, # TTORSEQ. • Is Weight Capacity of Timbren Springs for 2012 Toyota 4Runner for the Gross Trailer Weight
  • The capacity rating on Timbren springs such as # TABSTORSEQ or # TTORSEQ for your 2012 Toyota 4Runner is the vertical load capacity of the springs as a set. So in other words it is how much weight pushing down on them they can handle. In either case they are rated for far more weight than the tongue weight capacity of the vehicle itself . . . unless you plan on towing a 30,000 to 60,000 pound trailer! (Please don't attempt to tow a 30K to 60K pound trailer.) Given the weight of your...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement System For 2004 Toyota 4Runner
  • I recommend installing the Timbren system # TTORSEQ over the Firestone # F4135. Since you said you occasionally tow or carry a maximum of 3,000-lbs, the Timbren system would be a nice option because you do not have to make any adjustments to the system. As more weight is added to the vehicle either from tongue weight when towing or loading the back of the vehicle, the Timbrens will stiffen to provide more support for the load. Using the Firestone system means you will need to adjust...

Advantages of rubber springs include easier installation, zero maintenance and a normal ride when the vehicle is not carrying a heavy load or towing. Air springs offer adjust-ability to suit uneven loads but take a bit more time to install. The linked articles...

  • We have to recommend you check with a Toyota dealer and see what they think. If they say the vehicle can't be used with weight distribution regardless of the hitch used then there's no way to accomplish what you are trying to do. Best option we have now that we know will work great is the Timbren kit part # TTORSEQ which is a confirmed fit for your vehicle and will provide quite a bit of suspension support. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

  • As long as you are using the factory coil springs on your 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser then the 2-1/2" lift kit you have in the rear will not be a problem. If you have a set of taller/stiffer aftermarket coil springs then you would need to test these for yourself as the manufacturer does not test fit with aftermarket coil springs, just the factory ones. For a 2018 4Runner that is a 2 wheel drive we have the Timbren Rear Suspension # TTORSEQ which is rated for 3,000 lbs and will do a great job at helping with towing but they weren't built for off-road use so...
