Reduced axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Just like the rear of your vehicle will sag under the weight of a fully loaded bed, the front of your vehicle will sag when under the burden of heavy equipment such as a snowplow. In this case, the front axle is handling not only the weight of the equipment, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Install diagrams of Timbren hollow rubber springs

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your front axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down so that the bottom of each spring touches the axle. Because each spring is making constant contact with the axle, it is always working to cushion and support your factory suspension.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you're carrying off-center loads.

A snowplow mounted to the front of the truck will require extra suspension support for the front axle.

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System will help raise the front end of your vehicle when you're using heavy equipment like a snowplow. This ensures that your headlight beams will be pointed in the right direction and tire wear will be reduced. If the plow is off-center or has an extension, the springs will automatically compensate for this as well.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. More elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Review of Timbren Vehicle Suspension - Front Axle Suspension Enhancement - TIHF4000N

Ellen: Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen here @etrailer.com and we're going to be taking a quick look at the front axle Timbren Springs. These are going to help to alleviate a lot of issues that you might have out on the road. These are specific fit for the International DuraStar from 2007 through 2015. So with those trucks, they're going to use in all kinds of different applications. It's a medium duty truck.

So, anywhere from an ambulance, to a work truck, utility truck, a big box truck, fifth wheel, anything like that. So, a lot of different things. These can help in a lot of ways because they're going to help support your OEM suspension and give it a little bit more of a boost. It also helps to take out a lot of the blunt force from hitting any kind of potholes on the road, or just general road shocks as you're traveling. So it makes for a much more comfortable ride. And especially for those trucks, they can be a little bit top-heavy, so this helps to reduce any kind of sway or feeling like you're a little top heavy and you're just swaying or catching the wind.So they work independently of each other.

They're just there for support to help give that OEM suspension a little bit of a boost. That also helps to extend the life of your OEM suspension. You're spreading out that weight over an additional component. So it helps those components to do a little bit better. It doesn't increase the overall hauling capability of your truck.

It just makes it more comfortable and it makes it more effectively carry that weight. So let's take a little closer look at these guys and talk about how they're going to install. So, it's just going to be these two Springs with the brackets on top and then a bracket at the bottom. This bottom bracket does need to be welded. So that's one thing with this install, it does require welding, no drilling though, all you have to do is just melt these into existing holes in the frame of your DuraStar. It comes with all the hardware to do that, so you don't have to worry about picking up anything extra.

Generally, a bolt that goes down through the spring, through that bracket and then there's a nut on the bottom side they'll attach to bring those two together. And there'll be two bolts, washers and nuts and everything going through the brackets up at the top and then through your frame. So, pretty straightforward install. You do need to lower the axle, so it can freely hang to get access to that bump stop. And then, weld that plate on top of your spring pack, on top of the U-bolt platform. So other than that pretty simple, straightforward install, again, they do work independently side to side. So as pressure goes more on one side, it stiffens up and provides that weight carrying capacity or that leveling capacity. So it keeps your tracking nice and level. These again are for the front. So especially if you have anything installed on the front like a plough or a grill guard or something that's going to be adding more weight, these are really nice to have to account for that extra weight that you're putting up there or any other accessories that you might mount on the front of your vehicle. These are also available for the rear axle as well. I would highly suggest picking those up too. You can find those right here @etrailer.com using our fit guide. These do have a carrying capacity of 10,000 pounds, but again, keep in mind that doesn't help to increase the overall payload of your truck or the weight carrying capacity, it's just there as a support. If you think of it as kind of a brace to help you lift that weight better than lift more weight. That's pretty much all there is to it for our look at the Timbren Springs. These are a really nice solution, a maintenance-free solution as opposed to airbags. So you put them in there, they do their job and you don't really have to worry about them again. So, hope this has been helpful in deciding these are the right solution for you, again, I'm Ellen here @etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I used this on my Isuzu tow truck. The blocks in and of themselves are fine, they support the weight. Here's the problem: They are pre-loaded, meaning that they always touch between the frame and the rear axle. As you load the vehicle this puts more pressure on the frame in this 5" area where the blocks are. The springs have not yet taken as much weight as they normally would. Now, all this upward pinpoint pressure bends the frame. This is what happened to me on my rollback tow truck. After many hours and now double plating the frame all is well again, but a tremendous amount of work. Yes, the blocks are fine, but the result of installing this product resulted in a bent frame. The vehicle was not overloaded and was within the GVWR.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I really like these Timbren bump stops. I think the best thing about them is the simplicity, both how they work and how easy the install was. I bought these when I added a dump insert (similar to a salt spreader) into my 2019 F-250. I have loaded this truck heavy before with dirt and the truck sagged tremendously and had a lot of body roll. To prevent this with the now added dump insert, I installed these. Super easy to install! Took maybe 30 min. It reduces body roll and seems to improve the ride depending on how loaded the truck is. One unfortunate consequence to the install is that the Timbrens brought to light that I have a weak leaf spring on my passenger side, which was suspect previously. Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase and would buy again!

Delivered a day early, easy installation, just what I was after for my 2010 2500,with a leveling kit 63 gal auxiliary tank, generator, tools, and the like in the bed, probably 1000 pounds or so,300 or so behind the center of the rear axel, not so much by choice just the way it had to be ,these got rid of that annoying little squat, much more satisfied with the stance with the tongue weight on it,easy order easy delivery , you can see the before and after, awesome product!!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product is high quality, all parts fit well and I didn’t have to force anything. High strength thick steel, and the jounce bumpers are seriously heavy duty. I haven’t had a load on the truck (98 Ram 3500) since install a few days ago, so they haven’t touched the base plates yet. One thing I’m concerned with is the jounce bumpers are touching and are right up against the lift blocks and U bolts. I’m unsure of the longevity these bumpers will have after a heavy load is on them and they are constantly rubbing on the hardware. Also, as the load gets heavier they expand outward as they flatten out so I’m also concerned with if that will push my lift blocks outward and mess with the suspension. I’m prepping for a slide in camper and when I get it I will have to take a look and see what effects that weight has on the suspension, the bumpers, and ride quality.

Comments
I am not sure when I will be able to have a load on it to confirm, as I do not have a camper just yet. I am currently working on upgrading the suspension in preparation for one. Is there an alternative similar solution, other than airbags - as I dont want those, that can be run? With a similar weight capacity? Kind of interesting Timbren hasnt run into this issue before with the older Ram 3500s. Wonder if this is somehow unique to my truck? All the rear components are original OEM, so it seems kind of strange.

Comments
You mentioned that the jounce bumpers were touching up against the lift blocks without a load in the truck and I wondered if you could send a picture of the installation?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 01/05/2022

Comments
I do have additional questions for you. Is the top picture showing how the springs look with a loaded weight? Have you already installed your slide in camper? I wanted to see if the top bracket were touching as well? The manufacturer is trying to determine if a smaller diameter spring would help or not
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 01/05/2022

Comments
Both pictures are right after installation with a completely unloaded bed. Since installation, I have not had weight in the bed, so I can not 100 say if the top brackets would touch the U bolts or leaf springs. But from looking at it just now, it appears the top bracket would just barely touch the U bolts with a loaded bed, and would definitely touch if there was side to side movement with a loaded bed like going over a speed bump, pot holes, or uneven terrain.
-- comment by: Jimmy - 01/05/2022

Comments
I did hear back from Timbren. Currently there is not a bracket that would be narrower that they can offer. When loaded if the brackets interfere with the smaller spring, then it may be advisable to return the kit.

I was researching if I had an alternative and I realized that I needed to confirm your set up. Do you have the 3500 cab and chassis - if yes was it always a cab and chassis - or do you have the 3500 pickup? I am under the impression that you have the pick up since you want to use a slide in camper however, I wanted to be sure.
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 01/05/2022

Comments
It is the 3500 pickup. Thanks!
-- Etrailer Expert Jimmy - 01/05/2022

Comments
I believe I now know what happened and I should have asked about the truck before now. The TDRTT3500 that was ordered is used for the cab and chassis model versus the pickup and this is leading to the fitment issues you have seen. I do have two options to offer for the 1998 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup including a different Timbren application. They are part # TDR3500
Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System
$373.07
and part # SSA25
SuperSprings Custom Suspension Stabilizer and Sway Control Kit
$629.99

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

First, this is the third truck have have put Timbren SES on, so I am a big fan of this option for a pickup truck. There is no impact to the ride when the bed is empty, when loaded it is a big improvement keeping the truck is a level position, reduced sway.. I would have given this 5 stars, except the lower bracket is rusting. All the other parts are painted black except this one part - see picture... This is after one year, truck is parked in a garage in NC (not a high snow/salt state)...

Comments
I continue to be a fan, on my 1019 f150, I used the 1 in spacer, works perfect ! I have dumped 2200 lbs of stone in the bed a few times, no problem.

Highly recommend for anyone towing. Leaf springs were flattened out prior to install. Swapped the bump stops out for Timbrens in a campground before making a 1000+ mile trip home. They work amazing leveled the truck out while towing and absorb the bad bumps.

Comments
I would absolutely buy the Timbren SES again if I didn’t already have them. No issues after a year.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on 98 Ram 3500 pickup. Haven't put a load on it yet, but it installed very easily and fits well. Driver's side spring brackets were a bit harder to install than the passenger side, but still overall easy. One con was the powder coat finish was worn off in spots right after opening the box. Not sure if the packaging is to blame or what, but in general the packaging never seems to be that great on the etrailer products I've ordered (just brown packing paper).

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I have a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 pick up truck (elevation package) in which I added a 3.5 inch ROUGH COUNTRY KNUCKLE LIFT KIT with Front Struts. The rear distance between the bump stop's metal cup just under the frame and the the rear axle is 8.25 inches with an empty truck bed and a quarter tank of gas. I gave the professional this information on my truck and what I needed; they e mailed back the kit with only 1.5 additional spacers on each side of the truck, Ok. I still came up with 2.25 inch space with an empty truck bed on both sides. I feel More TIMBREN PRODUCTS WOULD be SOLD if websites carried information All together for the average people to buy at their finger tips. It would have been easier for me if the following were all grouped together for my truck : TIMBREN Rear Suspension Enhancement System TGMRCK15S (that has 3/8 bushing) which is actual about 4.5 inches not 5inches in height. FOR TRUCKS with LIFT KITS spacers are required with the same 3/8 bushings 1 inch spacer (that has 3/8 bushing) A25723-90AHOO 1/2 inch spacer (that has a 3/8 bushing) TA25722-90POO I required an additional 1 inch spacer on both sides than I was e mailed. It would also be easier if I could buy the additional bolts grouped with my additional 2.5 spacing on both sides of my truck on the web site, than going to the hardware store. I would pay the additional cost. So all together for my 3.5 ROUGH COUNTRY LIFT, I required 2.5 inch spacers on both sides with the 4.5 height kit which = 7 inches . I haul my 4 wheeler in the bed and broke a level spring years ago. On other occasions I place fire wood in the truck bed. TIMBREN is the way to go, it will be there when I put weight in the bed of truck; be it a 4 wheeler or wood. Friends of mine have air bag systems that leak over time and are much more in price. You can not go wrong with TIMBREN. When installing, remove salt and sand near top of original bump stop bolt, apply PB blast wait 10 minutes use a breaker bar with easy removal. Go to the hardware store to get longer bolts. When installing have to jack up the back of the truck under the towing package to get space to use tools to add new TIMBREN PRODUCTS.

Comments
Awesome for hauling four wheeler in bed and for hauling load of fire wood in the bed, no broken leaf springs and no sag

This Rear Suspension Enhancement kit were so easy to install, I was almost sure I missed something. They installed in less than an hour. I was able to place my floor jack under the ball mount to raise the rear end enough to remove the old mounts and simply install the new ones. Hooked up my 28' rv to my Silverado 1500 and they worked as advertised. No front end sag and I feel safer towing it. Customer service helped me find the right product I needed without dishing out a lot of cash!

While I have sold this vehicle since this review to my neighbor, she has told me she loves this product when she pulls her rv. I now have a 34 ton pick up and purchased a set for it. I am very satisfied with the Enhancers i purchased for it!

I was very impressed with the easy installation and the performance of the product. I can easily put a 1 yard of top soil in my Ram 1500 and my truck carry it level , no problem. No more snag In the rear. I also find towing a trailer much better. No worries about blowing air bags, this product is maintenance free. Love it, it simple and it works great. Highly recommend

Never mess with airbags again on your truck. These Timbren bump stops are the only way to go. Installation took a total of 10 minutes and they work amazing. No messing with airlines, filling or deflating air bags with complicated installation. I’m towing a 44ft trailer and these Timbren bumps stops are a must. Great product but a little pricey for what they are.

Comments
After a year of towing some kind of trailer every week, the bump stops are showing some wear from riding on the bump stop pad on the axle. That being said, they are still working as intended and as good as the day I installed them. After a lot of miles, the only draw back is driving around with no trailer. Normal driving the ride isn’t effected but when you hit a bump in the road you really feel it hit the bump stop. You loose a fair amount of rear suspension travel with these but I’m used to it now.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Fitment for Ram Promaster 3500 Thor Sequence 20k motorhome: A suspension enhancement that should be installed on every Promaster 3500 camper conversion. Straight from Thor's factory, these campers wallow in wind and when semis blow by; scaring the daylights out of you. Timbren's upgrade is easy to install and results in about an additional 1/2-3/4" clearance. Improvements in handling are immediately noticeable. Even driving around town. Rounding hard curves on the interstate used to be dreadful. Now I drive into them with confidence. STILL, handling needs additional help. Helper springs will be my next purchase. Unfortunately, etrailer does not carry Hellwig EZ-990 HELPER SPRING KIT (part #9665) . It's design addresses some of the complaints voiced by buyers of etrailers option. Additionally, I considered replacing the OEM NEXEN tires with ones with a higher load rating. Thinking they contributed to handling issues. BUT, after installation of Timbren's upgrade; it was clear that is not necessary. Timbren's product is ridiculously priced for what it is. Though the handling improvements alone are well worth it. Perhaps one day these will be stock on all Ram Promasters.

Comments
Thank you for your review! While dont carry the part you mentioned, we do carry the SuperSprings Custom Suspension Stabilizer and Sway Control Kit as an alternative. I attached a link to the part.

The Timbren Rear Suspension Upgrade has worked quite well in the year since it was purchased. I also added Hellwiggs helper spring kit and changed tires to Michelin Agilis Cross Climate. One can drive the Ram Promaster 3500 camper fully loaded with complete confidence, now.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I just installed the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System on my 2019 Ford F-150 4x4. The install was pretty straight forward, but I will say that the written instructions were pretty vague. Reviewing the Video on the e-trailer site was helpful. Also the markings for Left and Right could be improved. The marking “L” was very small and baring readable and the “R” appeared to be under some scratch marks so it was not legible at all. I think this product will help considerably. I have attached photos. The clearance between the rubber spring and the bottom plate is approx 1”. I also previously installed the Equalizer weight distribution & 4 way anti sway system to tow my 30’ Travel Trailer. The Timbren is to prevent any slight squat may occur.

It's okay. I believe I'm going to replace it with an air bag system though, as currently every time I hit a bump the springs make the small gap to the top of these and I'm always hitting the bump stops.

Comments
You mentioned that when hitting a bump a gap appears above the springs. Would be able to send a picture?
-- Etrailer Expert Jenny N - 05/09/2022

Comments
There is always a gap above the springs, they do not contact the leaf spring while the truck is resting. It is just small enough of a gap that any bump I do hit makes the leaf spring contact the Timbren jounce spring, which has the same sound effect as hitting a bump stop.
-- comment by: Christopher - 05/09/2022

Comments
My apologies as I was thinking that you meant that there was a gap at the top of the Timbren bump stop verses at the bottom between the bump stop and the springs. Of course, there should be a 0.5 inch to 1.5 inch gap and some people feel like it creates a stiffer ride when the truck is not loaded. I think this is what you are experiencing. I would recommend taking a look at part # AL89388

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I bought these for a 2020 Ram 2500 because they had great reviews here and at a lot of other places around the internet. They do not fit correctly. On the passenger side, they are almost touching the frame with no load in the bed or on the hitch. The ride is absolutely terrible, very rough and painful. The ONLY time it's tolerable is with my 3000 pound camper in the bed of the truck. I would have returned these, but I waited a few months to install them, so it was too late by the time I realized how bad they were for my application. If you have a truck that is always loaded with a lot of weight, this would be awesome. Otherwise, spend the extra money and get air bags. I will be installing air bags and throwing these in the trash.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I just installed these on my 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. It was really easily done and only took .5 hour total. Because the AT4 is slightly lifted I did use the spacers review separately. I am towing a pretty heavy 2 axle horse trailer with a tongue weight between 6000 and 7000 pounds which the truck can handle. When I hitched up with the original bump stops the hitch dropped 4", the frame over the rear tires squatted down 2 and 3 quarters " and the frame over the front tires lifted 3 quarters". After the installation the hitch dropped only 2 and 3 quarters", the frame over the rear tires squatted down 1 inch" and the frame over the front tires lifted . Test drive went well with the same smooth ride with no load as there is no contact. Pulling the trailer went just perfect, no sway due to the trailer design, and the load was very stable with very little bounce.

Very easy install. Didn’t want airbags. This is perfect for towing my 4 horse gooseneck trailer.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Received my springs today and had them installed in less then 45 minutes in my driveway, on my 2018 GMC Denali 3500 HD. I followed the advice of etrailer's videos. I pull a 2011 all aluminum self contained toy hauler and use Husky weight distribution hitch. I have not yet taken our trip to AZ from WI yet but will provide further input when we do over the 4th of July. I used a floor jack on the frame rails to provide clearance for installation and did not take the rear wheels off...worked in the wheel wells to remove and install.

Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that I had a really hard time getting the bolt started in the frame, A quarter inch longer bolt would have really been nice. I had to start with a different longer bolt to pull the washer into the rubber bushing before I could get the supplied bolt started.

After a year the bushings are holding up great. They really help the stability of the truck when pulling the camper

The fork lift operator couldn't reach far enough to center them over my axle, but it didn't matter, because I installed air lift air springs and the Timbren bump stop spring enhancements. I can't believe how well they performed together. It was only a short trip with this load, and I'd never haul this heavy of a payload in a 1500 unless it was a short trip, but it wouldn't have been an option without these enhancements. The fork lift driver was even impressed. He asked me what I was using. These products kick serious ass! AMAZING!

Beefed up my 2018 Ram 3500 dually with these. I carry a Host Mammoth truck camper(6,000#). Visited 27 states in last 12 months thru all know nds of terrain. Couldn’t have done it without Timbrens. Also very easy installation. Thanks Pete Anderson

Best investment for suspension so far!! Had wind, semi’s and large dips in road sway our 2015 Bounder all over the road. With the timbrens installed took care of almost all of that! Big dips, Bounce one time, done. Semi’s pass no issue, Wyoming winds cuts right through!

Comments
They are still working great! Purchased front and rear pair.
