An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

I've only used these twice since I bought them. I was pulling a little over 10k pounds. These "springs" keep the rear end from squatting and it maintained a really smooth ride while pulling. It still squats a little because the rubber compresses some when there is weight on it. Also, I have different torsion keys and the front end is leveled. When you look at the pictures, it gives the illusion that it's squatting in the rear a lot. But remember, the front end had been cranked up 1.5 inches. I really like them over all. My only complaint is that when you keep them installed when you aren't pulling, it rides really rough. These prevent rear suspension travel. When you hit a bump, the axle hits these stops and it hits hard. I just take them off when I'm not pulling and put them back on when I do pull. After you switch them out a few times it only take 10 or 15 minutes to do the job. I'd rather have these than airbags. More reliable, less maintenance. I would buy them again.

2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

The order process was great with excellent delivery. As an automotive professional I have recommended and installed well over 100 sets of Timbren's on customer vehicles. When it was my time to address weight and sag due to my new trailer...it was obvious what I was going to do. As expected they reduced my sag 1 3/4 inches at the rear wheel body to tire with trailer hooked up. etrailer was recommended to me and I will use them for all my needs from this point forward. Absolutely great service and I rarely give 5 stars. They do deserve it with product and service. Thanks George J.

After 1 year they are doing exactly what was expected of them. A great product with great results. I will and have recommended etrailer to many people because of the quality products and fantastic service and followup.

Very good value, this does help support the vehicle when I hook up the trailer. I measured the height of the wheel base and it holds higher with this unit installed.

Fantastic, I ordered a second set for another truck I own. They set above the axle so when not loaded there is not a stiff ride.

2004 Ram 2500

I have a 2004 GMC Yukon XL 8.1 2500. I’ve been pulling a 27 ft puma travel trailer weighing around 11000 pounds for the past 8 years. We camp usually once a month March - November. I’ve always thought this truck held the weight just fine until my neighbor recommended these timbrens. He has them on his 1 ton Chevy hauling a 18000 Pound fifth wheel. Installation of these timbrens was simple about 25 minutes. We just got back from a 300 mile round trip camping weekend. What a difference!!! Bumps are now soft. Very little sway when big trucks pass and my Yukon now sits level. A very sturdy feel while pulling My camper. I do notice when unloaded my truck rides a tad bumpier. I think it’s because the rear of my truck sags a little due to all the years of hauling weight. All in all I would highly recommend these. Big big improvement. The people at etrailer are great to work with. Very knowledgeable and friendly.

2009 Ram 2500

for a 2009 Suburban 2500, these are great when towing. It helps with squat and handling. It does make the unloaded/non-towing ride a lot rougher. Unloaded, for my Suburban, if the gas tank is more than a quarter tank full, the Timbrens are making contact with the frame and in turn, translating a lot of the road bumps into the body causing more roughness in the ride than usual. It's a trade off. But I don't mind the rougher suspension if it means safer and smoother towing.

Chevrolet Suburban

Very happy with this product. I have bought these for 2 different vehicles, Great for the price & does the job fine. It decreases the sagging of my 3/4 ton Suburban by 3" or 4 ". I wouldn't pull a trailer without them.

Still love them, wouldnt travel without them.

This is a well designed product that is (mostly) easy to install. No cutting or grinding, just unbolt the old ones and the new ones fit right in. The one hiccup was that the bolts (and nuts) that are welded on to the brackets are covered in paint, which makes the threading the nut rather difficult. I needed a vice and some oil along with some elbow grease, but I was honestly worried that I might break a weld. Once I pre-threaded everything it was a snap to put together. I do recommend these, but the added frustration for such an expensive product means I can only do 4 stars.

2001 GMC Yukon

Installed on a 2001 GMC Yukon XL 2500. These worked great, i have airbags on my dually but wanted a less involving install and wont be hauling as many varied loads as that truck. They were simple to install and even solved some body roll issue that would lead me to consider installing a sway bar.

Easy install took about 20 minutes on my 2017 Ram 3500 SRW. Had about 1/2 inch clearance as recommended. Loaded up my 5th wheel (2350 hitch weight) and about 200 lbs of gear in the bed. Just got back from a 800 mile camping trip through mountains of TN. You can really feel the difference around those sharp corners and uneven surfaces. The truck felt firm and controlled not hard and jarring as some have mentioned. Going over those overpasses with the wonderfully smooth (Not) joists was greatly improved. The truck would squat and rebound again, with a firm controlled response. Driving without a load felt the same as before without them. I would highly recommend these! Ordering from etrailer continues to be my go to option!

by:

The product came very fast. I already installed it the same day on my 2009 Dodge Ram pickup. It looks like it should do a fantastic job. I'll know better when I hitch up my travel trailer.

by:

Took about 45 minutes to install. But that was 2 trips into the house cause my deep drive sockets were buried. F-350 gasser with 8’ box, Fiberglas cap, 200lb wooden storage drawers and estimated 400lbs in tools. I tow a 14k bumper pull dump that squats the truck. I installed the spacer with the timbrens and it sits on the original axle stop. Ride quality is unknown as I haven’t driven it yet.

by:

I bought the timbren SES 121474110. I am not really satisfied with how these helped my trucks towing stance. The truck tows the same. I carry an in bed tank with 50 gallons of fuel in addition to the 35 gallon fuel tank from factory. The truck rides the timbrens the whole time. Thats okay, my problem is that the truck squats the same amount with these when I hook up my car trailer. The truck still goes straight down to the load leaves (pretty heavily squatted) the same as before. Did I get a light duty version? dont feel these meet the 6,000 Ibs capaticy as advertized. I think I should have gotten air bags. The product was well made. so they still get 2 stars. Just not what I thought it should have been.

by:

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

Installation was a breeze, removed old bump stops installed Timbrens in about 30 minutes. Haven’t put a load on them yet so I’ll update later. Installed on a 2008 Silverado 2500HD..

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

Out of the box fit !!
Only issue I had
was keeping the wedge from moving during installation

by:

These work really well with the coil springs on my 22 Tundra, I'm really impressed with how strong these springs are, on purpose I hooked up to a trailer I no business hooking up just to see how much squat there would be, once they made contact there was no squat at all! I put them to the test by hauling my 9400lb travel trailer from Arizona to Iowa. They worked well with my weight distribution hitch for effortless towing. Very easy to install. I save time by not having to adjust air pressures after hooking up to a trailer, hook up and go! I was on the fence with air suspension and the timbrens, George from etrailer listened to my situation and recommended that these would be the best fit, he didn't steer me wrong.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

After successfully using air shocks with on board compressor on our 2001 F250 for years, I almost automatically put the same setup on our new 2022 F250. We tow an 11k lbs travel trailer. Then I read reviews on Timbren Suspension Solution & thought, worse case I’ll end up with both solutions. After spending 20 minutes installing Timbren and towing the trailer a few miles, it became obvious I didn’t need air shocks, or anything else. The truck & trailer drive as one. Our rig is level and rides great. When the trailer is unhitched, the Timbren’s aren’t engaged - just a normal F250 ride.

by:

The Timbren rear suspension bump stops are the best by far. I installed this unit on a 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma which became an essential item for safety towing purposes.

The main reason for purchasing this product was for aided support for towing. This is essential for those who tow boats, tear drop trailers or medium sized campers.

The stock bump stops are relatively small in size which is standard for other vehicle manufacturers however Timbren's bump stop are made with such high quality material and craftsmanship.

This also helps in preventing in stressing the front suspension from becoming raised which can affect your steering when your towing. The Timbren bump stops also helps in preventing your rear suspension from the "sagging effect" which can cause stress to your tires.

I recommend that when you install the bumps stops, check the lugs every quarter or depending on frequent you tow, to include tightening the lugs with a torque wrench to ensure it's torue specification(s).

This product has given me peace of mind when traveling long distances and when camping off the grid. Timbren also has good customer support service however etrailer has paramount customer service as well.

  • Can I Tow A 5th Wheel Trailer With A 2004 Chevy Avalanche?
I do not recommend attempting to pull a 5th wheel with that vehicle. The Avalanche may have adequate towing capacity for smaller 5th wheel campers. My main concern is configuration of the truck bed and that it would not allow turning clearance. That being said I do not offer a 5th wheel hitch install kit that will fit this vehicle. Basically 5th wheel or gooseneck towing with this vehicle would be a no-go. You can certainly still tow with this vehicle but you would be limited to bumper...

The AutoRide self-leveling and damping suspension system in your 2001 Suburban 2500 uses various sensors in the vehicle to control a compressor pump that continuously varies shock damping while driving. This system cannot be defeated and aftermarket air springs like the Firestone Ride-Rite cannot be installed on the vehicle according to my contact at Firestone. Is it the additional spacers that are causing the main part of the spring to out of alignment compared to the stock bump stops on your 2004 GMC Yukon XL? Are the Timbren springs fully seated in the bump stop cups? On these vehicles it is hard to manually push them into place. We usually use a block of wood and slowly put weight back on the axle so that the wood and the weight will push the springs into the bump stop cup. And I know you have the Z71 springs but is the Yukon itself 4-wheel...

For your 2005 Chevy Suburban 2500 4x4, I recommend the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TGMRSB4S. This will stabilize your vehicle to significantly reduce that sag by using the Aeon Rubber that becomes more rigid as more weight is added. These springs are extremely well suited for towing, they just don't have the adjustability of the air springs, which you may not even desire. This will work just as well as the air springs, but the air springs have a little smoother ride....
