An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Easy install, video was helpful. I'm extremely pleased with the ride and the fact I'll never have to air up my bags. Good trade up. Thanks for all the fallow up calls and info from Lisa with Etraier. I do recommend Timbren springs and Etrailer to anyone carrying heavy loads and or towing.

The quality of the product is of top-notch.I installed it on a 2017 Chevy express 2500 cargo van with no load , install was very simple.picture with no load.will edit with picture and comments when loaded with equipment .

I had trouble with my browser called and spoke with Karen. She took my order. Then turns out I had two orders of the same thing. Karen took the time to call my home and ask is I really wanted two of the same thing. Great company, great customer service. How many companies in today's world would have made the extra effort.

This is the second pair of Timbren I have bought. I love them. Used them on a 2010 Silverado, and now on a 2014 Express Van. Not only help the 'bottoming out' effect, but great for stability during towing and when fully loaded.

After a year I still like them for heavy loads. I have found the bottoming out when hitting a bump with no load painful and uncomfortable. I actually cut two coil off them to allow the normal suspension to work when having no load. They still work for heavy loads. They are not the panacea for suspensions, but they definitely work when you have a heavy load.

Works really well in our Roadtrek camper van. Reduced sway from wind and trucks and mountainous road conditions. Very happy!

by:

Easy install took about 20 minutes on my 2017 Ram 3500 SRW. Had about 1/2 inch clearance as recommended. Loaded up my 5th wheel (2350 hitch weight) and about 200 lbs of gear in the bed. Just got back from a 800 mile camping trip through mountains of TN. You can really feel the difference around those sharp corners and uneven surfaces. The truck felt firm and controlled not hard and jarring as some have mentioned. Going over those overpasses with the wonderfully smooth (Not) joists was greatly improved. The truck would squat and rebound again, with a firm controlled response. Driving without a load felt the same as before without them. I would highly recommend these! Ordering from etrailer continues to be my go to option!

by:

The product came very fast. I already installed it the same day on my 2009 Dodge Ram pickup. It looks like it should do a fantastic job. I'll know better when I hitch up my travel trailer.

by:

Took about 45 minutes to install. But that was 2 trips into the house cause my deep drive sockets were buried. F-350 gasser with 8’ box, Fiberglas cap, 200lb wooden storage drawers and estimated 400lbs in tools. I tow a 14k bumper pull dump that squats the truck. I installed the spacer with the timbrens and it sits on the original axle stop. Ride quality is unknown as I haven’t driven it yet.

by:

I bought the timbren SES 121474110. I am not really satisfied with how these helped my trucks towing stance. The truck tows the same. I carry an in bed tank with 50 gallons of fuel in addition to the 35 gallon fuel tank from factory. The truck rides the timbrens the whole time. Thats okay, my problem is that the truck squats the same amount with these when I hook up my car trailer. The truck still goes straight down to the load leaves (pretty heavily squatted) the same as before. Did I get a light duty version? dont feel these meet the 6,000 Ibs capaticy as advertized. I think I should have gotten air bags. The product was well made. so they still get 2 stars. Just not what I thought it should have been.

by:

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

Installation was a breeze, removed old bump stops installed Timbrens in about 30 minutes. Haven’t put a load on them yet so I’ll update later. Installed on a 2008 Silverado 2500HD..

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

Out of the box fit !!
Only issue I had
was keeping the wedge from moving during installation

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

After successfully using air shocks with on board compressor on our 2001 F250 for years, I almost automatically put the same setup on our new 2022 F250. We tow an 11k lbs travel trailer. Then I read reviews on Timbren Suspension Solution & thought, worse case I’ll end up with both solutions. After spending 20 minutes installing Timbren and towing the trailer a few miles, it became obvious I didn’t need air shocks, or anything else. The truck & trailer drive as one. Our rig is level and rides great. When the trailer is unhitched, the Timbren’s aren’t engaged - just a normal F250 ride.

by:

The Timbren rear suspension bump stops are the best by far. I installed this unit on a 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma which became an essential item for safety towing purposes.

The main reason for purchasing this product was for aided support for towing. This is essential for those who tow boats, tear drop trailers or medium sized campers.

The stock bump stops are relatively small in size which is standard for other vehicle manufacturers however Timbren's bump stop are made with such high quality material and craftsmanship.

This also helps in preventing in stressing the front suspension from becoming raised which can affect your steering when your towing. The Timbren bump stops also helps in preventing your rear suspension from the "sagging effect" which can cause stress to your tires.

I recommend that when you install the bumps stops, check the lugs every quarter or depending on frequent you tow, to include tightening the lugs with a torque wrench to ensure it's torue specification(s).

This product has given me peace of mind when traveling long distances and when camping off the grid. Timbren also has good customer support service however etrailer has paramount customer service as well.

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

Caution, these parts did not fit my 2008 Suburban 1500 as advertised. Also FYI, Amazon also says they will fit. After some alterations I got them to finally seat. Tha original bump stops have a groove cut into them about a 1/2" from the top to accept 6 pertrusions that are stamped in the bump stop cup. After several attempts to press the Timbrens into place they wanted to pop out or were very easily removed with little pressure.I ended up cutting in 6 notches with a utility knife. Photos attached. I used markings on the old bump stops to determine spacing. I marked the Timbren with chalk to illustrate approximately where I notched them.Caution, cutting hard rubber with a utility knife is dangerous if you are not used to using a utility knife. I believe Timbren makes a spacer with a groove cut in them. That would make installation a lot easier. I cannot fault etrailer because they probably are following Timbren specks. Also I am not sure all Suburbans of this era have the same bump stop cup. I would recommend checking your old bump stops before ordering. Hope this helps.

by:

Worthwhile investment. Easy and simple install. Adds stability to keep RV from wanting to tip over. Same as adding a torsion bar. Needed to jack up the body, to install and after installation, Timbrens are engaged with no clearance either on top or bottom. I would purchase again if needed.

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

I just installed Timbrens in our 2024 Sequoia Capstone. It has 22" wheels so I was able to slide under the rear axel and swap out the factory parts without jacking or removing the the wheels. It took me about 20 minutes to do both sides. With no load I can fit almost two fingers between the axel and the bottom of the Timbren. I tow a 29' boat that has about 600-700 lbs of tounge weight. The Sequoia sits pretty level and rides great. I had a 2010 Sequoia before this one that I installed manual rear coil airbags that worked well. I like the Timbrens as there is no pumping every time I tow.

by:

I was able to pull my RV with 550lbs tongue weight without the excessive rear end squat. I did notice however that I can feel them engage during normal unloaded driving when I drive over dumpy parts of a road where before there was more spring travel. It’s not bad but a stock 97 f150 does have a smooth ride. These will take some not, all of that away. But the up side is well worth limited ride change.

by:

Package had been torn open, and the box was empty except for bolts. I have cameras and they were not stolen from my house, so they must have come up missing during the delivery process

by:

The last two things I bought from E-trailer looked like they were used. This one at least had all of the fasteners, although they didn’t seem to be the ones in the directions. These had Allen heads and I had to buy a socket that had an Allen key. The directions included aren’t very clear. I had to find some YouTube videos to make sense of the install unloaded I can’t tell any difference, which is great. Hoping this fixes my backend squat with the boat trailer attached which is so severe I can’t flip down the trailer jack. Fingers crossed. Get a jack under the hitch and really unload the axle from the frame. Once I got enough clearance it was truly a 30 minute job.

You are correct that the Air Lift Loadlifter 5000 Air Helper Spring Kit # AL88205 you were looking at is only designed to fit Chevrolet Express Van 3500's with a fully boxed frame. Since your 2014 Chevrolet Express Van 3500 has a C-channel frame you will not be able to install this kit. • Removing Bump Stop to Install Timbren Suspension Enhancement # TGMRG35 on 2010 Chevy Express 3500
According to my contact at Timbren, there is a bolt that holds the bump stop in place from above. Once the bolt is removed, the bump stop you described can be slid out of its slot and removed. As long as the weight bearing capacity of the van is not exceeded, using the Timbren springs will not effect your warranty coverage. Keep in mind that the Timbren springs will NOT increase the capacity of the suspension, but they will prevent the suspension from bottoming out.
