An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall when loaded. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride when loaded or towing because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Manufacturer Spotlight - Suspension Enhancement

Hey guys, it's Jake here with etrailer. Today we've got John with us from Timbren. He's gonna tell us a little bit more about what separates Timbren from the competitors. I appreciate it, I'm glad to be here. Timbren is a suspension specialist. We're based in Whitby, Ontario, so we are a true manufacturer in Canada and we offer a wide range of suspension products from light duty, from commercial all the way up to Overlander, Sprinter applications and trailers.

Now we've talked about a few of the options you guys have and we have plenty of options on our website. Right. We've got the SES kits. We've got the axle-less suspension. Right.

We've got your new coil inserts that just came out recently. But what would you say is your bread-and-butter at Timbren Yeah, no, our SES, suspension enhancement system, is definitely our bread-and-butter. Came out in 2011, won a SEMA New Product Award for best truck suspension. And really, the evolution you just mentioned here, you know, starting in 1968 all the way through now, 2024. But the SES kits are really the core of who we are.

And if you, if you would say at, in the level of stiffness on the market, what would you, would you put yourself in more in a heavy duty side for the SES kits or is it more of a lighter duty Yeah, great question. Lighter duty, we certainly can have a product for commercial and heavy duty, but in '82 when SES was introduced, it was purposely introduced for that, that light duty market. So we start with 1500 and again, go all the way up, but by far really popular with that 1500, 2500 crowd. That kinda leads me into my next question. So we talked about, your specialty is kind of in the lighter duty, but do you have an option for the heavier duty for your sprinter vans and maybe for your truck bed campers Yeah, absolutely.

We do have SES kits for truck beds, truck campers with a higher center of gravity. That creates a new kind of set of problems with the sway side to side. So we have severe duty kits for those. And it uses a single convoluted AON versus a double convoluted to tackle that problem of side to side. And the same thing with the sprinter van. It uses a rectangular shape Aon, but it's there to do the same deal that side to side sway because they're so top heavy, it'll eliminate that. Okay. And then we've had an instance here at etrailer that we had a van that was very, very heavy on the one side. Is there anything that you guys can do personally to help, I would say, I guess customize that kit for that particular user Yeah, by all means we would want that individual to contact us. We would ask a couple questions, see where that weight is distributed and we can actually produce an AON with either a stiffer hardness or durometer or a softer durometer and that will help level it out. So yes, we can take care of that for 'em. And I think that'll really, really help people to get their rigs dialed in because who knows what they're putting in the campers afterwards, after they buy 'em. They come from the manufacturer already heavy on that side and they're trying to load stuff on the other side to try to even it out. But knowing that there's a solution that you can customize for your rig no matter what the weight is on either side is really, really cool. Yeah, absolutely. We're happy to take care of 'em and again, there's no charge for that. Awesome. Now to kind of wrap things up, what sets Timbren apart from a lot of other manufacturers out there Well, I think there's a couple things. We're a family run company and our longevity, you can't deny, 1968 to 2024 and our warranty, we have a lifetime warranty regardless of how old it is. We will take care of it, replace it, limited lifetime warranty, and the hundred day money back guarantee. Very cool. And that's whether or not you're the first owner Right. And yeah, we're not asking for receipt, who'd you buy it from It'll be taken care of. Just give us a ring and we'll take care of it for you. Very cool. Well thank you again for meeting with us. Appreciate it. It was a pleasure to work with you. Thank you.

by:

Easy to install and so far they are working just fine . I haven’t hauled a heavy load yet but I think they are good

by:

Love the extra support for my pilot....great investment!

by:

by:

by:

Works great even had my nephew buy them for his Dodge truck

by:

Definitely worked as advertised, very easy to install.

Etrailer did an excellent job. 2 day shipping for less than $8. No brainer. Staff was helpful on the phone answering questions. I ordered online and that was easy as well.

Product: these went on 16 F150 4x4 supercrew with tow package and e rated upgrade tires. I use the vehicle to pull 7000 lb travel trailer. Purpose for the purchase was to help with sway and slight sag in the rear. I use a wdh with sway but that was not performing good enough. I choose these after some research.

Install: easy. I didn't use a jack or lift. I just assembled with one inch spacer. I had an inch between the bottom of the timbren and the stop plate. I am no mechanic.

Unloaded was pretty much what I expected. You hit a big bump, you get some jarring. 90% pleased.

First tow with 16'6" boat (full windshield). The timbren was not engaged from the weight of the boat. Bumps were a little ruff. Added weight from equipment will take care of the space and ride should be better. 85% pleased with towing the boat.

Travel trailer tow. Almost completely leveled truck with combination wdh and timbren. Was able to comfortably tow. Took out most of sway I had experienced. Almost 0 bounce, even at low speeds. Basically did everything I wanted it to do. 95% pleased.

4 stars because the unloaded ride is stiffer than I would like and pulling the boat maybe a tad ruff without equipment. This will be especially true in ruff roads. But at half the cost of air bags and ease of installation I do think they are worth the money. Would recommend to those that do not mind a rougher ride every now and then.

by:

Keeps truck level. Only down side is it makes for a harder ride when compressed

by:

My favorite part of this product was the easy install,it took me like 10 minutes and it was ready to go.
So far I’ve towed 3500lbs on my trailer with a 2000lb double axel trailer and my truck was staying level.
Loving it so far!

by:

Its ok but not that differences, highly recommended for air bags instead these

by:

by:

It performs as described and stabilized the ride carrying our slide-in camper.

by:

this is not the first time I used your product. they work very well for suspension support. I have used them on 2500 series pickup and now on 1500 series ram great a product at a reasonable price. keeps the rear end from sagging and have better control for you steering under heavy loads.specialy pulling loaded trailer

by:

It's still holding strong. Very noticeable through curves.

by:

Great purchase it helps with stabilization during heavy load hauling.

by:

Superb. Exactly what was needed.

by:

I ordered this item in advance of picking up my new fifth wheel, when the box came in the mail half of the contents were missing, several emails, calls were made, talked to several people and still don’t know what’s really going on they really need some kind of secure ent in the packages (tape) or some kind of wrap….
