An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the vehicle.

When hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear of the vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the vehicle's weight as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. The resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with the vehicle's factory suspension to keep the vehicle level and improve your driving performance.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a vehicle-specific bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape provides increased resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of the vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer helping to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or passing of a semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside quicker.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened as the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the competition:

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to install than air springs - no air hoses are needed to be run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments necessary. The rubber construction causes Timbren's springs to be more elastic than similar products constructed of micro-cellular urethane. More elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Kit Review

Timbren SES kits with patented AEON hollow rubber springs are designed to provide adequate capacity to solve load carrying and towing problems on all trucks, vans, and SUVs. When installed they ride above the axle so that they do not effect the unloaded ride of the vehicle. With a loaded vehicle or when pulling a heavy trailer the AEON spring comes into contact with the axle to level the vehicle. Cushion road shock, reduce sway, and improve handling. Here is how simple it is to install. Remove the OEM bump stop, attach the AEON rubber spring to the Timbren bracket using the hardware that comes with it. Then using the holes in the frame which were used for the bump stop, attach the SES assembly making sure that there is a 1/ 2 inch to 1 inch space between the axle and the AEON spring. Spacers are included in many kits which may be needed to achieve the space required. What could be easier. SES kits come with a lifetime warranty at a satisfaction guarantee.

Super easy install on my 18 Ram 3500. Slide in camper made backend squat a little over 4 inches before and only about 1 1/2 after installing. Have not quite a 1/2inch between axle and rubber so maybe hits a little sooner than recommended but I got them to take the camper weight so it's all good 612379

These are horrible. The ride on this when loaded is like driving down a set of railroad tracks. I am going to have to take them out. A dump truck has a better ride than the Ram 2500 with these installed. Do not purchase. 2012 Ram Diesel 2500 regular cab long box. 454133

The product was shipped right away. I made a mistake on the shipping address and realized it as soon as I hit order. I called customer service and they corrected it right away. Product came when they said it would and was well packed. By the looks of things, it should correct the problem I'm having. I ordered it on recommendation of a friend who has the same product installed on his truck. According to him and from what I can see, the installation should be a breeze. I am dealing with Timbren. The washer for mounting the rubber spring to the mounting plate clearance hole is too small for the bolt diameter. The washer is not something you can get out without damaging in my opinion. The bolt also will not thread completely into the mounting plate because of poor threads ( not tapped correctly). Galling of bolt if you try to tighten. Very poor QC or inspection at Timbren or wherever. Once again, working eith Timbren on this. Maybe you should check you kits at etrailer!! 704185

Comments

I pulled the kits we have in stock and they check out fine. The washer inside the spring had the same diameter as the spring for the bolt. Could you send in a photo of your kit?

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I first put the Timbrens on the rear to help stop bouncing and porpoising on highways and bridge ends when towing. The rears have a gap and do not touch the springs until the truck is loaded, working great and keeping a smooth unloaded ride. The front Timbrens fit snugly and touch all the time. The ride is firm and a bit harsh with my unloaded truck having a snow plow spring option. When my trailer 30 ft trailer is hooked up, the front of the truck is slightly lighter. Towing with the Timbrens is nice and the bounce and rebound porpoising is very controlled. I would like the front Timbrens to be a little softer when the truck is unloaded, but I think these units are a nice add-on for better control, safety, and preventing damages. I had the fronts installed at the shop when rotating tires and a front end alignment. The rears installed easily. 691475

TOTALLY AWESOME PRODUCT.....Though I wished I had them when we trailered the hot rod out to New Hampshire last month. We received this item late as it was on back order for far too long. I did get a chance though to put the levelers through their paces when using our 18' lo-boy to haul large limbs, branches and other brush to compost site. The truck did NOT flinch and inch downward as it did WITHOUT the levelers. I liked too that the installation was basically pretty easy. I highly suggest going this way and leaving the air bags for the big truckers. Don't have to fuss with filling or deflating bags or dealing with leaky bags. This is a presto zippo installation and you can play "immediately". 550307

Comments

I couldnt be more happier with this product. Truck is still remaining relatively level, even with the hot rod in the enclosed trailer. Hot rod weighs in at 2200 pounds and nary a between truck and trailer. As in my earlier review, I HIGHLY recommend this product over air bags...so much LESS hassle .

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

this is the second set of Timbren springs I have purchased, the first set was on my Ford Raptor, they took all of the sag and sway out of pulling my boat. I have this set on my 2015 GMC Denali 2500HD, I pull a 42 ft. 5th wheel and the Timbren's take all of the sag and sway out, these are in my opinion the best product I have purchased for my truck. 683687

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer. 560925

After a 3000 mile trip with a 42' fifth wheel on a 2016 Chevrolet single rear wheel short bed 3500HD, I will say they made a difference. They took some of the bounce and the side to side rocking out of the truck. I would definitely put them on my next truck as well. 667565

I purchased a used pickup without any jounce bumpers. I ordered these to provide more support rather than going back with stock ones. I pull a 5th wheel and these keep the truck level with less bouncing around and bottoming out when towing. When I'm not towing they sit about an inch or inch and a half about the stops so they do not negatively impact the ride quality. They work as advertised and I'm pleased with them. 653123

Product was purchased based on mechanics recommendation for a friends F250 being used to tow a thirty foot gooseneck 3 horse trailer with living quarters. Purchased for Lexus GX460. Solves rear sag problem when towing with medium to heavy trailers. I don’t notice any difference in the ride when not towing a trailer with the helper springs. Should really come standard with the vehicle I’m the first place in order to utilize the towing capacity. I would highly recommend this cheap fix. 468046

Timbren doesn't give very good instructions with their product wish they would put diagram so as to be able to see how brackets go, but happy so far haven't put load on the truck yet that's coming up with a trip in august with my 30ft camper and truck loaded for trip guess will come back and let you know how the product works after the trip , but etrailer delivered when they said they would thanks will keep you in mind for future purchases. 544811

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I installed the front and rear Timbrens on my 2017 Georgetown GT5 class A. The installation was pretty easy, except for the tight areas getting the wrenches on the bolts. The front passenger side used the original bolt to install on my frame. Installation took about two hours to complete the front and back. It would be quicker if you use power tools, but I wasn't in any hurry. I've driven on two trips now with them, and they made a noticeable improvement on the rocking sideways back and forth. The motor home seems a lot more settled now with wind and traffic. 563687

I have installed and used the Timbrens on my 2015 F350 dually with my 5th wheel Keystone Fusion RV for a year now. i have to say that the Timrens are not only easy to install but make the ride of my truck excellent not only on the highway but back roads as well that includes very twisty turns. Timbrens keep my truck level and i don't have to ever worry about airbag air pressure. i have owned airbags before and never again will i ever buy or use them. When you don't have a load in the bed or your RV hooked up the Timbrens ride above then axles.. Best investment for towing period! 264475

I am impressed with the timkens. Got a 2009 GMC 2500 hd and Western 8.5' v plow. Nose dive was an understatement before. However I put a 2" leveling kit and installed the timkens at the same time. One of them made my truck ride horrible. Probably the leveling kit from the torsion bars being turned in. I do notice tho that empty going over a jarring bump you can feel the timkens hitting hard. But with a plow on the truck it is the way to go. After this winter I'm gonna take them off and put stok back on for the summer. It's one bolt to replace them install was a piece of cake. 592401

I installed these on my 2012 Ford F250 because I have two friends who have them on their trucks and they pull a travel trailer and a fifth wheel camper. I was impressed with the difference it made compared to my truck and camper Parked next to theirs'. I am mechanic and I see no reason why anyone would have trouble installing these them selves. Clean off the Nut and end of bolts before trying to loosen. Spray some WD-40 on the threads. Put on some gloves and use a 15mm wrench to loosen factory nut. Be sure to hold up on the factory bump stop because it has a line up pin that keeps it from turning as you loosen the nut. The driver side is a little more aggravating to get to because of wiring harness but there's plenty of room to use a wrench first then a 3/8" drive rachet and short extension with a good 6point 15mm standard depth socket will speed up removal. Then installing the new parts is a breeze. Just follow directions or etrailer videos on YouTube. Took longer to remove factory bump stomps than to install new ones. Maybe 45 mins total on original ones maybe. Then after preassembly of new ones, it took maybe 20 mins to install completely. Give yourself 1:30 hrs of time and enjoy your truck not sagging around town when loaded. 654107

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Installed the Timbren suspension enhancement system on the front and back of my 03 Dodge 2500 diesel with stock suspension. Has been installed for one year of mixed use: towing up to 8000 lbs on rough roads (Alaska), plowing, and general use. I often carry a 150 gallon fuel tank or a 1200 lb camper in the bed. Overall, installation was a breeze. For the front, I simply pried out the old pieces and put the Timbren in their place. Needed to jack the front end up to create enough space and to properly seat the new pieces. The rear installation required a slight bit of wrenching but not very difficult. I really noticed a benefit to having the Timbren on the front. The diesel motor is heavy and the factory springs need all the help they can get. Way better ride in after the upgrade under all loads/road conditions. I would recommend adding the Timbren to the front of any diesel truck, or anybody who will be plowing with their truck. The rear suspension was improved while towing, the Timbren definitely soften the blow when you hit rough roads or frost heaves. Unfortunately, when unloaded, the timbren on the rear make the truck ride rougher and bumps even more violent. It seems like the unloaded bed really wants to spring back after hitting bumps. If you are always loaded heavy the Timbren is a good choice. If you run empty occasionally I would go for airbags or something that can be adapted to the load on the truck. I gave a 5 star review for the front suspension upgrade, if the review was for the rear only it would be 3 stars. 666745

Having purchased a cargo trailer, I thought it might be wise to beef-up the rear suspension on my 2000 Tacoma. I found the Timbrens on etrailer, and it sounded like they might work well, so I purchased a set and installed them. According to the instructions, there should be about a 1/2" gap between the top of the springs, and contact with the bottom of the Timbren - unless you have a CAP on the truck! The gap pretty much evaporated because of the fiberglass Leer cap. So, I'm getting contact a lot of the time. Result is, my ride has become stiffer than I'm used to, but not so much that it bothers me. Like my wife said, " It's a truck! Hello!!" (OK, I'm satisfied with the product.) 110248

Comments

Keep in mind that the gap Timbren refers will diminish as the springs wear. Since the truck is a 2000, it probably has some miles on it and if it has hauled heavy loads in the bed or has pulled a trailer, then the leaf springs may just be worn.

A year later and 5,304 miles pulling the trailer, I think the Timbrens are a good investment. With a typical pull of 2,555 lbs of trailer and load, and approximately 300 lbs of tongue weight, Im finding the truck actually rides better than it does with no load. And, theres no maintenance whatsoever!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Jack the truck up; simple to install, I used thread lock (red) for safety. The only problem I had was the lower control arm of my '12 Tacoma obstructed my the use a 8 mm hex wrench to tighten it past hand tight. 129760

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I had trouble with my browser called and spoke with Karen. She took my order. Then turns out I had two orders of the same thing. Karen took the time to call my home and ask is I really wanted two of the same thing. Great company, great customer service. How many companies in today's world would have made the extra effort. This is the second pair of Timbren I have bought. I love them. Used them on a 2010 Silverado, and now on a 2014 Express Van. Not only help the 'bottoming out' effect, but great for stability during towing and when fully loaded. 146117

Comments

After a year I still like them for heavy loads. I have found the bottoming out when hitting a bump with no load painful and uncomfortable. I actually cut two coil off them to allow the normal suspension to work when having no load. They still work for heavy loads. They are not the panacea for suspensions, but they definitely work when you have a heavy load.

Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • Correct Timbren Suspension Enhancement for a 2019 Ram 3500
  • The correct Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System (SES) for your 2019 Ram 3500 pickup should be part # TDR3500CA because the other option, part # TDRTT3500D, is for Severe Service vehicles like tow trucks. This kit has an 8,600 lb capacity and doesn't require any drilling for the installation, but please note that it will not fit if you have the factory Air Suspension system. Another thing to remember is that this will not increase the weight capacity of your pickup as it is designed...

  • How Much Support Do the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Add on 2019 Ram 3500
  • There are two different Timbren Rear Suspension Kits available for your 2019 Ram 3500. The Timbren # TDRTT3500D will provide 8,000 pounds of load leveling support and the Timbren # TDR3500CA features an even higher capacity of 8,600 pounds. Any aftermarket suspension enhancement system, including the Timbrens, will not actually increase the capacity of your Ram 3500. The listed capacities are simply what the springs themselves can handle. If the payload capacity of your Ram is lower...

  • Which Timbren Rear Axle Suspension Kit Fits 2014 Dodge Ram 2500 Laramie With HD Rear Coil Springs
  • The Timbren Rear Axle Suspension Kit you referenced, part # TDR2500CA, does not come up in our fit guide for your 2014 Ram 2500 Laramie. This kit is specified for Ram 2500s up through the 2013 model year. According to my contact at Timbren the correct kit for your 2500 Laramie is their new kit # TDR2500D. If your application is for a constant load (a camper or welder in the truck at all times) then you could use the # TDRTT3500D.

  • Timbren Helper Spring Recommendations for a 2017 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Short Bed
  • I will be happy to help with some rear helper springs for your 2017 Ram 3500 4x4 diesel short bed. First, for your application (towing a 5th wheel trailer) I do recommend going with Timbren springs rather than air bags since Timbren springs do not require maintenance or for you to add/remove air from air bags. But air bags are superior in other ways including having the ability to level the bed side to side and adjust the ride quality to be more or less stiff. For Timbren springs that...

  • Which Timbren Kit for 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Towing 12.5k Trailer
  • For your 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 I would recommend the Timbren kit part # TDR2500CA which will provide you with an additional 6,000 lbs of support to the rear suspension. The heavy duty kit part # TDRTT3500D that you also referenced is a fit for your truck but it's going to be overkill for your truck and would give you a harsh ride. This kit should really only be used on trucks that will be at their towing capacity most of the time. The additional support of the lighter duty kit will be...

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2016 Ram 3500 Towing 25k Trailer
  • For the amount of weight you are towing with your 2016 Ram 3500 I would recommend the heavy duty Timbren kit for your truck part # TDRTT3500D. This will provide up to 12k of additional suspension support which will help your truck that is pretty near it's towing capacity. This won't give you additional capacity beyond what you truck is rated for, but it will help with the sag quite a bit.

  • Helper Springs for a 2014 Ram 2500 Diesel with 5th Wheel Prep Package
  • For a 2014 Ram 2500 the only Timbren system that is listed is # TDR2500D. The other one you mentioned, # TDRTT3500D, is designed for 3500 models and is rated much higher that you would need at 12,000 pounds. System # TDR2500D is rated for 8,600 pounds but considering that the pin weight of the trailer will be much lower than this that 8,600 pounds is more than enough. The springs install on the bottoms of the truck frame rails so they will not interfere with the 5th wheel prep package...

  • Recommended Timbren Rear-Axle Jounce Spring Kit for 2011 Ram 3500 Dually Diesel Towing Car Hauler
  • For your 2011 Ram 3500 dually diesel that is towing your 48-foot car hauler I suggest the Timbren kit # TDR3500CA. This kit will work with (or without) overload springs and its 8600-lb load rating means it will have the correct capacity to stiffen your rear suspension without creating new problems. The 8600-lb-rated kit # TDR3500CA will provide plenty of support to handle the substantial tongue weight of your enclosed car hauler trailer. I do not recommend the higher-rated kit # TDRTT3500D...

  • Recommended Timbren Rear Suspension System for 2011 Ram 3500 Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer
  • I assume you mean Timbren # TDRTT3500D. This kit is designed for heavy-duty service trucks like tow trucks. So for your 2011 Ram pulling a fifth wheel trailer I recommend the other Timbren, part # TDR3500CA. This kit has an 8,600 pound capacity and will certainly help your truck with heavy loads.

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement to Improve Ride and Sag on 2012 Ram 2500
  • Since one of your goals is to reduce sag I suggest the Timbren system. The TorkLift StableLoad # TLA7311 is mainly for creating smoother ride and to avoid sway and body roll. The Timbren springs will help with sag while towing and won't affect the ride of your 2012 Ram 2500 when it's not loaded. They become more rigid as the load increases to help prevent the truck from sagging. They also work independently to help with uneven loads that improves the overall ride and helps body roll,...

  • Recommendation for Suspension Enhancement on a 2015 Ram 3500 4x4
  • Great question. Suspension Enhancement Sytems (SES) are intended to assist suspension in good working condition, but will not correct any bowing in your axle or increase the towing capacity of your vehicle. Assuming your vehicle suspension is in good shape and your vehicle and hitch are rated to carry the 25,000 pounds, you would definitely benefit by adding an SES. Both the Timbren SES and the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs are similar in that they both use convoluted springs to...

  • Recommendations for Suspension Upgrade on 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 Longhorn
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, # TDRTT3500D, is a great choice for keeping your 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn as level as possible when towing your 13,500 pound 5th wheel trailer. Another option that you may want to consider is using an air bag system like the Air Lift LoadLifter, # AL88297 for a 2 wheel drive and # AL88295 for a 4 wheel drive Ram. If a perfectly level ride is the goal, air bags will give you more control over the ride height of your truck and...
