Rear Suspension Support

Towing or hauling a heavy load can cause rear sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the weight of your vehicle. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your vehicle's factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

Installed spring when it is not compressed

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The closed-cell urethane material allows for smooth contact between the springs and your vehicle. And the springs act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

Installed spring when it is compressed

The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

The helper springs are custom designed to fit your vehicle, and they install easily - no drilling required.

Video Transcript for SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be taking a look at the SumoSprings Solo Line of Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle. You'll want to use eTrailer's fit guide to determine the correct kit for your vehicle. This is what our SumoSprings look like when installed. Yours may look a little different depending on your vehicle. They're gonna replace our factory jounce stops and sit right between our frame and our rear axle. So whenever we're carrying a heavy load, they're gonna give us that extra support that we need. The way our SumoSprings are gonna work is when our suspension starts to sag from the heavy load, these are gonna absorb a lot of that weight. They are gonna work independently from each other so it's gonna help with those off-center loads.

Our springs are gonna have a progressive rate to 'em. So if we have a light load, they're gonna compress softly, still giving us that comfortable ride. But the heavier load we put on 'em, the more they're gonna compress and the more firmness they're gonna have to them. Now comparing to our factory jounce stop, you can see there's a big difference in height. These are gonna give us a lot more compression, whereas our factory jounce stops are really just preventing the axle from hitting the frame. We have a water tank at the bed of our truck as a heavy load or to simulate the tongue weight of a heavy trailer or a fifth wheel. So as I take the truck through my test course, I can definitely tell that there's a load back there.

The engine doesn't seem to be strained that much, but the bumps are extremely harsh and I can definitely feel it resonating through the seat. When I come to the slalom course and I'm going through the turns, it definitely has a lot of body roll and I just generally feel like I need to slow down because it feels likes it's leaning a lot and it's not responding quickly enough to the turns. Now that we have our SumoSprings installed and I have the same load back there, when I'm driving through our course, I can immediately tell a difference. It's much of a smoother ride. Going over the bumps really doesn't feel like anything's back there and it's just a lot more comfortable. When I come into the slalom course, it definitely feels a lot more stable and it doesn't seem to sway as much side to side and it just generally feels like it wants to go faster. These are made of a durable micro cellular urethane that works in temperatures from -25 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and resists damage caused by oils, road salts and UV rays. Compared to air bags, these are maintenance free option with no tubes to run or air pressure to maintain. Both will help level your load and provide a smoother ride.

Airbags can be adjusted to suit your needs whereas the SumoSprings are a fixed option. That completes our look at the SumoSprings Solo Line of Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle.

2015 Ram 1500

I should of gotten airbags. I bought these in hope of making towing my camper feel more stable and I was let down big time. These did not help in towing and in fact made towing worse. I had a neighbor that thought these were awesome when he got them for his truck but he has also since gone with air bags. My truck didn't handle very well with or without towing and I had to remove them. I still do not have air bags but I also haven't had time to camp. So, once camping picks back up I will be buying air bags. 527432

2015 Dodge Ram Pickup

On a 2015 Ram 1500. The Sumo springs work great. I went from a loaded ride height of 35 inches to 36 1/4 inches. But the real improvement is in the ride. No longer have the squishy rear end wobble that I used to have. Combined with my weight distributing hitch my ride height improves to 37 1/2 inches. Truck is level along with my travel trailer. When I'm not loaded I don't even notice that I did anything. Still rides like factory. My only complaint is in the installation. Eight nuts with washers per spring and there is no space at all on multiple nuts to fit a so met or even a ratcheting wrench. Took about an hour in my driveway. Other than this minor inconvenience, I have to say excellent product. 347254

Dodge Ram Pickup

I pull a 24 ft trailer w/ one slide out. It weighs roughly 5K (more loaded). My RAM 1500 is well balanced for the tongue weight and , of course, when not pulling, the truck drives as if the sumos were not there-which they are NOT when the weight comes off. I have noticeably more control overall. Glad to have purchased these. They were installed by Dodge dealership--no issues. A great product. 674123

The SuperSpring Solo work as advertised. They definitely help level the load when pulling my 27' camper. My only complaint is that they fit so tight (1/4" gap) between the bottom of the SuperSpring and the axle that as soon you load anything you are already using the SuperSpring. I would have preferred a little more of the oem suspension for day to day driving. 660605

Fantastic. has no impact on ride with no weight in truck. I installed them on my Toyota Tundra 2007 following a frame replacement. they sit about 1-2 inches off so they do not engage until loaded. significant difference with any load over 500 lbs. easy to install. 722454

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

Purchased for a Tacoma 4 dr, long bed, with a fiberglass cap. I have the TSB/recall replacement spring pack. With this set up I had a decent ride, and better support over the OEM springs, but still see that the springs provided only minimal improvement when loading in the bed say 300-500#. If so loaded (camp gear, MC gear, 2-3 persons in cab) on moderate unpaved roads the OEM springs were at max load and had we too much frame sag. WITH the addition of the SumoSpring kit I found my truck when UNLOADED handled the same, but did have less body roll in the rear. At rest the frame rail is just touching the SumoSpring and wheel well to ground is 36 1/2" with P245 tires. When LOADED as detailed above, the rear feels firmer, has less body roll, and does not sag to excess like the OEM spring pack. Very satisfied with results. A very nice enhancement at a excellent price point. Kit is simple to install and should require no regular service/adjustment. 353831

Installed when factory bushings deteriorated. I had noticed a slight sway when towing 9000 lb travel trailer during cross winds. Once installed, sway was gone. I will either take these off when I replace truck or purchase new ones. 582583

I installed the helpers on my Tacoma to help with the load of a car trailer hauling our old pick-up to car shows. They also help to keep the truck level when hauling loads of fire wood. The only issue that I have is that when empty, it gives the truck a stiffer ride. Thank you Etrailer for your quick service and follow-up on your products. 664732

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

08 Winnebago View on an 07 Sprinter chassis. To reduce the side-to-side rocking that is inherent in this tall, narrow, heavy vehicle, I decided to try the Sumo SSR-335-47's on the rear bumpstops. Using the vehicle bottle jack, I raised the rear tires almost off the ground, one side at at time, to provide enough room to fit the Sumos into place. The old bumpstops simply pop out with force from a couple of screwdrivers, and the Sumos simply slide into the existing brackets. The fit is precise and snug. I put soapy water on the brackets and applied a bit of force to wedge the Sumos into place. It's that simple. The difference is pronounced, with significantly less rocking over minor road undulations. I'm impressed with this product, and wish I'd done this simple modification long ago. 156528

Put these in my 2007 Tundra. I could tell a great difference just rounding corners with stability with out a trailer on. I like my trucks to ride like trucks and this for sure helped with that. Also when I hooked up my enclosed car trailer loaded there was a huge difference in the amount of squat it had versus before I put them on. 597026

Product works perfect, just like advertised, simple installation took 35 minutes both sides bolt in. I tow a 24’ enclosed car trailer with a car & golf cart inside. Very little sag, beats the trouble of air shocks, or installing air bags. All your products are very helpful To the do it yourself mechanic. Thanks again for a great product. Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I installed these on a 2017 Ford F-150 SuperCab to stop the initial rear-end sag common with towing a trailer. These pickup trucks have springs regulated for a very smooth ride WHILE EMPTY, as most PU's are used as a personal sports car. The SSR product removes the rear sag, without causing a harsh ride. Easy to install... no maintenance needed... no air-bags to constantly leak. I had already installed Hellwig after-market sway bars on the rear, and also replace the puny Ford OEM front sway bar with a Hellwig product. Together with the Sumo product, there is NO side-sway at all. This product provides extra support, without detriment to the ride comfort. 682449

I bought the sumo springs for the front of my 16 2500hd Duramax. The install was really simple Chanel lock pliers twist and pull old ones out and a little glass cleaner and a small pry bar pushed new ones right in. Went with the sumo springs over the timbrens cause I didn’t want the truck sitting on the stops and the sumo springs still have about 1 inch before they touch control arm so normal ride isn’t affected only have the added support when I install my V plow Very satisfied with etrailer and the sumo springs thank you 611056

2011, F53, 22,000 lbs chassis. After having adjusted tire pressure, installing new shocks and a rear trac bar, these are the icing on the cake. I installed the front Sumo’s and was so impressed I immediately purchased the rears. The side-to-side sway is almost completely gone, my motorhome tracks so much better now, and it actually soaks up a lot more of the little bumps. I’m really happy with the Sumo Springs and Etrailer. 225878

Installed these on a 2017 Mercedes 2500 Sprinter/2018 Roadtrek SS Agile. I already have these on the rear where they work great reducing sway and bounce, wanted the same handling in the front.. I found it much easier to remove the wheel to access the nut holding the bump stop in place and to place the Sumo Spring in position. Overall an easy install. 658576

  • Timbrens Vs SumoSprings for a 2017 Ram 1500
If you were to place 1,500 lbs into the bed of your 2017 Ram 1500, you would experience less squat using the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TDR1500DQ than the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-307-47. However, as you mentioned the benefit of the SumoSprings is that they don't produce as harsh of a ride. The Timbrens are made of a much denser rubber than the SumoSprings which means they will provide more support but less ride comfort. It really just...

Air bags kits are a better option when your trailer or cargo load varies a lot, especially with an uneven cargo load, but for towing one trailer that is more or less uniformly loaded up each trip I recommend jounce springs. Jounce springs will give you progressive rear axle support when you need it but they will otherwise not affect your ride quality. They also cost less than air bag systems, are much easier to install, and they require no maintenance. Since most of your trailer's 5900-lb...

In order to determine the towing capacity for a 2015 Ram 1500 you need to know your engine, axle ratio, if you have 2WD or 4WD, your cab size and your bed size. You will then need to take that information and reference your owners manual; from your description and what I saw of the tow ratings you will have a capacity as low as 4,190 lbs to as high as 7,440 lbs but you do need to verify this in your owner's manual. To tow, if you don't have a factory hitch I strongly recommend the Draw-Tite...

  • Recommended Rear Axle Suspension Kit for 2017 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Towing 750-lb TW Boat Trailer
You may well prefer the handling from a kit rated closer to the actual trailer 750-lb TW so you might instead consider the Super Springs # SSR-307-47, rated for 1500-lbs at 50-percent compression. This is likely to provide a smoother ride quality than the much stiffer Timbren springs while still giving your coil spring rear-end additional load support. This is also a no-drill bolt-on installation. The available Timbren kits are likely to be much too stiff for your particular application.

  • Comparing Timbren and SuperSprings Jounce Spring Kits for 2017 Ram 1500
The Timbren and Sumo rear-axle helper springs we offer for the 2017 Ram 1500, such as Timbren # TDR1500DQ and SuperSprings # SSR-307-47, both work the same way. They replace the factory bump stops with rubber (Timbren) or urethane foam (SuperSprings) jounce springs that, unlike those simple bump stops, provide progressive resistance when under load. As the load on them increases so too does their resistance. The factory bump stop is really just a fail safe, rather than an enhancement to...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Base Rails, Hitch, and Suspension Enhancement for 2017 Ram 1500
Your 2017 Ram 1500 will do just fine with that Ultra Light 5th wheel trailer with 1200 lb pin weight. Adding the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-307-47 is a wise choice to ensure your truck will travel well when loaded. These springs will absorb road shock and help stabilize your vehicle around turns as well as keeping it from sag. If you don't already have the hitch and rails, then I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Installation Kit w/ Base Rails for 5th Wheel...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement For 2014 Dodge Ram 1500
It sounds as though your weight distribution system may not be big enough for your trailer and load. I attached a link to a helpful article that explains weight distribution. I also attached a helpful article that explains how to determine tongue weight. After you find out what your tongue weight is let me know and I will be happy to make a recommendation for a system that will work for you. For an easy installation on your 2014 Ram 1500 I recommend using the Timbren suspension system...

  • Comparing Timbrens and SumoSprings for 2020 Ram 1500
Both the SumoSprings # SSR-307-47 and Timbren # TDR1500DQ for the rear axle of your 2020 Ram 1500 are jounce-style springs, but they do differ quite a bit as to the type of support they actually provide. If the bed on your Ram is pretty consistently loaded then the Timbren Rear Suspension System # TDR1500DQ will be the better option, as these springs are made up of a more robust Aeon rubber and consequently feature a much higher weight capacity of 8,600 pounds. They will do a better...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement System For 2016 Ram 1500
Both of the suspension enhancement systems you mentioned will work great for your 2016 Ram 1500. The Timbren, part # TDR1500DQ is the system I recommend. Since this installs directly into the cup that the OEM bump stop was installed in, the installation is a very quick and easy job. The OEM bump stop on a typical suspension may have 3 inches of clearance. After installing the Timbrens, you will have about 1 to 1-1/2 inches of clearance from the bottom of the rubber spring to the plate...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for 2016 Ram 1500
For your 2016 Ram 1500, I recommend using the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SSR-307-47. These springs will install in your factory bumpstop location and will only engage to the capacity needed to level your ride. They have progressive load control, so the springs compress easily at first for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride but with heavier loads the springs compress by as much as 80 percent for support. They are maintenance free and won't affect the comfort...

  • Comparing SumoSprings and Firestone Air Springs for 2020 Ram 1500
As you mentioned, there are some pretty big differences between a jounce-style spring setup like the SumoSprings # SSR-307-47 and an air bag kit like the Firestone # F4130 for your 2020 Ram 1500, both in terms of install/maintenance and actual performance. The jounce springs definitely offer the easier install and require no maintenance thereafter, while the air bags are bit more intensive to setup and would need to be adjusted based on your truck's load. If you are okay with this though...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for Load Leveling on 2016 Ram 1500
For your 2016 Ram Bighorn 1500 the best leveling will be with the air spring options. My recommendation is the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs - Rear Axle # AL57365 which will let you adjust the air pressure from 5 psi to 100 psi to level your truck. They have a rated load leveling capacity of up to 5,000 lbs but they do not increase your truck's rated payload capacity. This product will not fit trucks with the factory air suspension system. This kit comes with the manual...

  • Comparing Timbren and SumoSprings Rear Suspension Systems for 2019 Ram 1500
The primary difference between the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR1500DQ and the SumoSprings # SSR-307-47 for the rear axle of your 2019 Ram 1500 is their overall strength. The Timbrens feature a much denser rubber construction and have the higher 8,600 pound weight capacity to prove it, while the SumoSprings offer less capacity with a 1,500 pound limit but will be a bit more comfortable, especially when riding empty. So your choice between the two options really comes...

  • Which SumoSprings Kit for 2020 Ram Rebel 1500
We have two SumoSpring options that fit your 2020 Ram 1500 Rebel with the tow package. We have the part # SSR-307-47 which can provide up to 1,500 lbs of additional support or we have the # SSR-307-40 which can provide up to 1,000 lbs of support. Since you will be on the higher end of your towing capacity the better option would be the 1,500 lb # SSR-307-47. Unlike other options (Timbren specifically) the SumoSprings aren't nearly as harsh so the higher capacity kit won't make your daily...
