Rear Suspension Support

Towing or hauling a heavy load can cause rear sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the weight of your vehicle. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your vehicle's factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

Installed spring when it is not compressed

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The closed-cell urethane material allows for smooth contact between the springs and your vehicle. And the springs act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

Installed spring when it is compressed

The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

The helper springs are custom designed to fit your vehicle, and they install easily - no drilling required.

Video Transcript for SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be taking a look at the SumoSprings Solo Line of Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle. You'll want to use eTrailer's fit guide to determine the correct kit for your vehicle. This is what our SumoSprings look like when installed. Yours may look a little different depending on your vehicle. They're gonna replace our factory jounce stops and sit right between our frame and our rear axle. So whenever we're carrying a heavy load, they're gonna give us that extra support that we need. The way our SumoSprings are gonna work is when our suspension starts to sag from the heavy load, these are gonna absorb a lot of that weight. They are gonna work independently from each other so it's gonna help with those off-center loads.

Our springs are gonna have a progressive rate to 'em. So if we have a light load, they're gonna compress softly, still giving us that comfortable ride. But the heavier load we put on 'em, the more they're gonna compress and the more firmness they're gonna have to them. Now comparing to our factory jounce stop, you can see there's a big difference in height. These are gonna give us a lot more compression, whereas our factory jounce stops are really just preventing the axle from hitting the frame. We have a water tank at the bed of our truck as a heavy load or to simulate the tongue weight of a heavy trailer or a fifth wheel. So as I take the truck through my test course, I can definitely tell that there's a load back there.

The engine doesn't seem to be strained that much, but the bumps are extremely harsh and I can definitely feel it resonating through the seat. When I come to the slalom course and I'm going through the turns, it definitely has a lot of body roll and I just generally feel like I need to slow down because it feels likes it's leaning a lot and it's not responding quickly enough to the turns. Now that we have our SumoSprings installed and I have the same load back there, when I'm driving through our course, I can immediately tell a difference. It's much of a smoother ride. Going over the bumps really doesn't feel like anything's back there and it's just a lot more comfortable. When I come into the slalom course, it definitely feels a lot more stable and it doesn't seem to sway as much side to side and it just generally feels like it wants to go faster. These are made of a durable micro cellular urethane that works in temperatures from -25 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and resists damage caused by oils, road salts and UV rays. Compared to air bags, these are maintenance free option with no tubes to run or air pressure to maintain. Both will help level your load and provide a smoother ride.

Airbags can be adjusted to suit your needs whereas the SumoSprings are a fixed option. That completes our look at the SumoSprings Solo Line of Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle.

Excellent product, the install instructions to me where confusing. I am an experienced suspension person. End of the day I installed for best fit and was satisfied. Price was right and ride was great after install. Have not had time to experience with tow but am not concerned. 572220

Received excellent advice from Darren at etrailer. Based on my specific needs he recommended a low maintenance solution and less costly. Had only one installation question when product arrived. A different etrailer rep could only advise a 24 hour turn a round time to respond. Called the manufacturer to get the questioned answered to complete the install. For a 2017 Chev Silverado there is no need for the washers or the spacers for install. They will update their install instructions for newer model trucks. Would have rated a 5 if install question was addressed. Thanks Darren for your recommendation about this product. It is more preferable than a air lift system. No more sag when towing an occasional trailer. 519682

2010 Chevrolet Silverado

My work truck (2015 Chevy Silverado 1500) is regularly loaded with 800 to 900 pounds of tools. Before installing the Sumospring the ride was kind of mushy. Now there is a nice spring to the ride, it feels like an empty truck. Installation was easy except that the 10 mm washers provided did not fit. A quick trip to the hardware store was the remedy. 499147

I Received the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs shipment today and installed them on my 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 standard cab long bed truck. It took about 30 minutes to install the helpers springs. I watched the install video and read the installation instructions on the etrailer website while waiting for the shipment to arrive. They were easy to install without jacking up the truck, I laid flat on my back and slid under the truck on my garage floor and had no problems at all. After installation I hooked up my 20 ft travel trailer and went on a test drive. The helper springs made a big difference and gave a more solid stable performance with the truck while towing my 5,000 lb travel trailer. I've installed airbags on previous trucks and I believe for the money and easy installation this is the best option to improve towing performance. 725590

Worked very well tamed the porpoising when towing the camper. I removed them when not camping during winter because they are a little stiff riding when truck is empty. Very easy install and removing 15 min. 719658

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

I installed these sumo springs on the rear of my 2006 Chevy Silverado. The installation took approximately one hour and a half from start to finish. I pulled my travel trailer having a Tongue weight of approximately 392 pounds with a 492 pound Honda scooter strapped in the bed of the truck which still did not exceed the weight rating of the truck. The bounce the truck had prior to installation was eliminated completely. I highly recommend the sumo springs for anyone needing a more stable ride with a load (sumo springs make direct contact and provide stability) or without a load ( sumo springs ride approximately 1/4 of an inch above rear end bump plate). I have had experience with air bag suspensions and they are fine too; but, with sumo springs you can, “set it and forget it” because you have no air lines to worry about air leaks and uneven load distribution due to a lack of air on either side. Thanks etrailer once again!!!! 640336

Installed when factory bushings deteriorated. I had noticed a slight sway when towing 9000 lb travel trailer during cross winds. Once installed, sway was gone. I will either take these off when I replace truck or purchase new ones. 582583

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I installed these on a 2017 Ford F-150 SuperCab to stop the initial rear-end sag common with towing a trailer. These pickup trucks have springs regulated for a very smooth ride WHILE EMPTY, as most PU's are used as a personal sports car. The SSR product removes the rear sag, without causing a harsh ride. Easy to install... no maintenance needed... no air-bags to constantly leak. I had already installed Hellwig after-market sway bars on the rear, and also replace the puny Ford OEM front sway bar with a Hellwig product. Together with the Sumo product, there is NO side-sway at all. This product provides extra support, without detriment to the ride comfort. 682449

These have been exactly what we needed. The rear suspension on our new Xterra was a little looser than we liked for towing our camper. Over larger bumps we were bottoming out. The Sumos have the Xterra right where we need it to be. 287494

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

08 Winnebago View on an 07 Sprinter chassis. To reduce the side-to-side rocking that is inherent in this tall, narrow, heavy vehicle, I decided to try the Sumo SSR-335-47's on the rear bumpstops. Using the vehicle bottle jack, I raised the rear tires almost off the ground, one side at at time, to provide enough room to fit the Sumos into place. The old bumpstops simply pop out with force from a couple of screwdrivers, and the Sumos simply slide into the existing brackets. The fit is precise and snug. I put soapy water on the brackets and applied a bit of force to wedge the Sumos into place. It's that simple. The difference is pronounced, with significantly less rocking over minor road undulations. I'm impressed with this product, and wish I'd done this simple modification long ago. 156528

Product works perfect, just like advertised, simple installation took 35 minutes both sides bolt in. I tow a 24’ enclosed car trailer with a car & golf cart inside. Very little sag, beats the trouble of air shocks, or installing air bags. All your products are very helpful To the do it yourself mechanic. Thanks again for a great product. Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I have a 3500 Sprinter RV. Had the SumoSprings installed front and back for $135 at an independent RV service center that also handles RV's. They had never installed them before. I gave them the installation instructions and some advice I learned from some online videos. Sprinter is unloaded at present but notice it handles better going around turns and curves in that it doesn't lean as much and feels very stable. Need to take on a trip to see how it handles when loaded. I noticed a sort of squeakiness I am not sure was there before. I need to drive it more to determine it is from the SumoSprings. 544198

  • Comparing the Timbrens and SumoSprings for a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500
I have two options for you to help with squatting while towing with your 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. These two options are the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TGMRCK15S and the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-209-40. The main difference between the two is that the Timbrens are made of a much more dense rubber so they will provide more support but the adverse effect of this is that they could also decrease the loaded ride quality. • Solution for Leveling 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 when Towing Small Toy Hauler/Camper
Actually the best solution I can provide for you is a weight distribution system. A WD system not only levels the suspension like a suspension kit but since it does so by redistributing some of the tongue weight up to the front axle you end up with improved braking and handling. For towing situations like yours this is hands down the best solution we can provide. For your setup that has 350 lbs of tongue weight the Reese Straitline system part # RP66082 would be the best choice as it...

  • Recommended Tuner and Suspension Enhancement for 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3L V6
I have just what you are looking for. For your additional power and torque on your 2015 Silverado 1500 with 4.3 L V6, I recommend the Superchips Flashpaq F5 Pro Custom Performance Tuner - Gas/Diesel # SU5845. This will allow you to store customized tunes for you to get the most out of your motor. Each tune will change the horsepower and torque. For the suspension enhancement, I recommend the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-209-40. These are a simple install into the...

  • Best Way to Reduce Body Roll for 2019 GMC Sierra 1500
Ultimately your best option for suspension enhancement/vehicle control is an air bag kit like the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Air Helper Springs # AL88288 (which is an upgraded kit that has internal jounce bumpers) because you can independently adjust how much help you get on either side off your 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 to accommodate any loads you are carrying (or lack thereof). If you'd like the option to adjust and monitor the air bags from the comfort of your cab then we have...

  • Parts Needed To Tow Trailer With Tailgate Down With 2015 GMC Sierra SLT Crew Cab Short Bed
You are on the right track! Towing with your tailgate down with the 2015 GMC sierra SLT requires an extension to extend past the tailgate and have proper clearance. However, the TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extension for SuperHitch Trailer Hitch Receivers part # TLE1524 requires a SuperHitch Torklift trailer hitch on the GMC Sierra which there is not one available for the 2015 GMC sierra 1500 SLT. I recommend to use an extended ball mount to gain the clearance that you need to tow with...

  • What Does Decreased Ride Quality When Using the Timbren Enhancement System Really Mean
When towing a heavy trailer with your 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the rear suspension will most likely drop due to the added weight placed on the vehicle. This added weight is going to cause issues such as improper headlight aim, poor braking, and an overall decreased sense of handling. Therefore, suspension enhancements like the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TGMRCK15S are needed. The Timbrens work by placing a dense piece of rubber spring between the frame and...

  • SumoSpring Helper Springs for a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4
For the SumoSprings # SSR-209-40 for your 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 the springs will reach their 1,000 pound capacity at 50 percent compression. That means that there could still be some squat until the spring compress enough to stop it. But at the same time you are using weight distribution which will also work to prevent sag. So when all is said and done the 1,000 springs should do the trick.

  • Can a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.8L V8 2wd Tow a 3,500 lb Travel Trailer
Assuming your towing capacity is 4,700 lbs, you can safely tow a 3,500 lb trailer. In fact, 2wd trucks typically have a higher towing capacity than 4wd trucks and long bed trucks, or trucks with longer wheel bases, hold up better to towing issues such as trailer sway and traction control. I checked the owners manual for your truck and it only discusses the towing capacity for the 6.0L engines, but according to Trailer Life Magazine's towing guides, your truck should have a 4,700 lb...

  • Extra Ride Support for 2006 GMC Canyon 4WD Towing Trailer
Helper springs kits are designed to suspend weight carried in the cargo area of the vehicle, such as your truck bed. If you're towing a trailer and want to counteract rear end squat caused by the tongue weight of a trailer being applied to the hitch, a weight distribution system would be a more effective choice. To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement System for a 2011 Chevy Silverado 1500 In 40 Degree
The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs do indeed have a minimum temperature range of -25 degree Fahrenheit. If the temperature were to reach below this then they would become very brittle and could then crumble apart. Therefore, I instead recommend using the SuperSprings Suspension Stabilizer and Sway Control Kit part # SSA8MTKT which will add support just as the Solo Custom Helper Springs but there is no minimum temperature range.
