Rear Suspension Support

SumoSprings helper springs are great for pickup trucks. Towing or hauling a heavy load can cause sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the truck's weight. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

SumoSprings Rebel installed showing separation of 2-piece springs

The innovative 2-piece design of these Rebel springs allows for unlimited suspension travel. This means that there will be more movement in your suspension when you're unloaded or off-roading, which makes your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Each spring has 2 pieces. One piece attaches to the frame of your vehicle. And the other piece attaches to the axle, typically above your existing factory leaf spring. The pieces come together to provide support when you are towing or hauling a heavy load. When you're unloaded, they separate so that they don't restrict the movement of your suspension. The closed-cell urethane springs also act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

SumoSprings compressing under load

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings expand and compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts, and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

This kit comes with custom-fit brackets that are designed to easily bolt onto your vehicle.

Video Transcript for SumoSprings Rebel Custom Rear Helper Springs Installation - 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs, part number SSR-203-47-2.So here's what our helper springs look like once they're fully installed. These are not only going to give us a more comfortable ride, but if when we're towing something very heavy, it's going to take some of the stress off of our factory suspension and help support it.Now, the spring itself is made of a micro-cellular polyurethane, and it's going to be resistant to oil, road salt, and UV protection, so it's going to hold up for quite a while. Now, it is a two-piece design. We're going to have an upper section and a lower section, and the spring is going to have unlimited travel since it is two pieces, allowing us to have a little bit more comfort. But, like I said, at the same time, supporting our factory suspension and not wearing it out when we tow a heavy load or have that swat 00:00:58 happen in the back. Our springs are progressive, so when it's unloaded, we're still going to have a comfortable ride because the springs is going to compress rather easily. But the more we put in our truck bed, and the more load we have on it, the stiffer the springs are going to become and the more support they're going to give us.The springs are going to work independently from each other, which is going to help if we have an off-center load.

And it's also going to help reduce the body roll whenever we go around a sharp turn. The SumoSprings are going to have a weight capacity of 4600 pounds. I just want to mention that these are not going to increase the tow-able capacity of your truck, they're just going to help support the load. You always want to double check with your owner's manual to make sure your truck can handle the load you're pulling. One of the nicest features about these springs is, compared to other helper springs, these are not going to require any maintenance. We can simply bolt them on, get them in place, and we don't have to worry about them anymore. There's no air lines, or any adjustments that we're going to need to make. Before we install our helper springs, I'm going to take a few measurements.

And our factory height at our rear fender here is going to be right about 42 1/2 inches. Our fender measurement at the front is going to be right at 40 inches. We went ahead and added this jug of water so simulate a heavy load in our truck, and by doing that, our new measurement is going to be just over 40 inches. So we lost about 2 1/4 inches. Now, the front of our truck did come up about 1/8 inch. Now we have our vehicle on our test course, here.

And I can already tell you a major difference going over our speed bumps with a load in the back of my truck. The front end doesn't seem as tight, and that could be because it raised the front end up when the back end went down. The steering doesn't seem as responsive, and the bumps are a little bit harsher than normal. And you can just definitely tell that there's a big heavy load in the back.As we come to our slalom course, I can definitely notice the different in how the truck handles with a load in the back. You can definitely tell if it's off center, because it keeps wanting to pull to that side whenever I make a turn. With our SumoSprings installed, our measurement's just going to be just under a half inch of what it was at factory height, and the front fender measurement is right back at factory height. We took our truck back on our test course with our SumoSprings installed.

And I can tell you I immediately noticed the difference, and it wasn't as rough as a ride. Now, going over the speed bumps in our test course, it reacted more quickly, and it responded quicker. And it just seemed to take the bumps a little bit easier, and it wasn't so hard on my back. Now, coming up to our slalom course, I can immediately tell you there is a major difference on how my truck handles. It's very much more responsive, and coming in and out of the turns, it just seems like it has a better grip on the road. And it doesn't seem to roll to the side as much when I'm going around the turn. It genuinely feels like our truck wants to go faster through the course. Now that we've seen our springs in action, let's show you how we get them installed. To begin our installation, we're going to need to come to the back of our vehicle. And right above our axle, we're going to have a rubber bump stop, here, and we're going to need to pull those out. Now, these rubber bump stops are only just pushed in and pressed into place. We can take a pair of pliers, a pry bar, pretty much whatever you have available, and you're just going to want to grab it and it should pop out. May take a little bit of working at it, but it will come out. And we're going to do that on both sides. Now, our SumoSpring is going to replace our factory bump stop here, and it does come pre-assembled. But it's going to come into two pieces, and we're going to focus on the bottom piece right now. Now, if you notice, it's going to have two square holes. And then we're also going to have a tab that sticks out that's got some small ears on it. These ears are going to fit in between our U bolts right up against our leaf springs. So we can take our bottom part of our spring . The easiest way is to get these in and make sure they lock into place is if you take the one tab, you hook it on, and then you can slide the other one in. And it's always a good idea to move it around, twisting it, to make sure it locks into your U bolt right here. And our kits are going to have some long carriage bolts with the sleeves, washers, and nuts attached. We're going to disassemble that, and we're going to take our carriage bolts and we're going to drop them down through the square hole on that bottom part of our spring. You just want to be mindful of watching the brake lines, and everything else that's right there. Now we're going to put the other bolt through the back side. Now we can take the sleeve that was originally on the bolt, and we're going to slide it back over the bolt. This time, though, we're going to take our bracket . You want to make sure that that loop is facing up, because it's going to sit against the axle like that. And we can line up the holes, slide the bolt through, and we're going to follow it with a washer. And then, finally, we're going to follow it up with a locknut. And once we get one side hand tight, we can go and start assembling the other side. Now, with a 14-millimeter socket, I'm going to start snugging up my nuts on the bottom of my bolts. Now, I want to mention, you want to go alternating a little bit on each side, so it doesn't get in a bind. And we're going to tighten these nuts until the sleeve makes contact with our plate, up here.In order to get our upper section of our spring in place, we're going to need to lift the truck by the frame. Now, the type of lift I'm using is going to lift by the tires, so I'm going to actually put a jack stand underneath my frame back here and lift it up so the suspension can fall down.As I mentioned before, springs do come pre-assembled. So we're going to need to remove the nuts that are on top of our spring. Once we have the nuts removed, we're going to pull the two plates that are on top off. I'm going to set these aside for right now. Now, the way our spring is going to sit in there is very important. Now, these two top plates that we just removed are going to go around our factory jump stop 00:07:38 mount here. And those studs are going to have to go through, and that's how we're going to attach it. But since our spring is offset, we have to pay very close attention to how we position the upper section of our spring in so that it lines up correctly. So once we have enough room to get our spring in, we can go ahead and make sure that the larger section, or the part of the spring that's not covered by the bracket is going towards the inside. So that our mount will go and line up with our factory jump stop mount. And I'm going to slowly lower it down so that the mounting holes and studs are on the outside. That way it'd make it just a little bit easier to put those plates in.Now, our e-brake line here, and the cable mount, or whatever you want to call it that's holding it in place . It is going to interfere with getting our plate in the way. So I'm going to go ahead and remove this cable-style mount by pulling that one bolt out right there. I'm using a 13-millimeter socket to remove that bolt. With that mount out of the way, we're going to take one piece of our upper bracket here, and we're going to slide it over the studs. And then we can put the other one in position, after that. Now, with our plate positioned, and all the studs going through, we're going to take a flat washer, followed by a locknut, on all the studs going through the plates.I'm going to come back with a 13-millimeter socket, and I'm going to tighten all my hardware on my top plates, here. Now, it may be easier for you to access them if you have a universal extension like I do here. And we're going to repeat that for all the remaining hardware we have. The hardware in place, we can put our emergency cable bracket back, and replace the bolt that was holding it in place. You can go ahead and lower down the jack, or put our vehicle back on the ground. And we can do the same thing on the other side. And that'll finish up our look at the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs, part number SSR-203-47-2 on our 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500.

Installation was quick and easy. the instructional videos were the deciding factor to purchase this product. after installation everything was just as claimed. adding a 2300 load in the bed of the truck cause very little squat and actually lowered the front about an equal amount (1" in the back and 1/4" in front). since 60-70% of the trucks braking is from the front wheels this was import to me. options were airbags, adding additional leaf springs or this option. I was cautioned that when your vehicle is service with airbags installed putting the truck on a lift for oil change for example you might tear the airbag. this option on a lift the two sections just separate and go back together when lowered. I was happily surprised by the side to side stabilization removing the need for additional suspension additions. ask me again after a year 656968

The installation instructions for both the anti sway bar upgrade and the Sumo helper springs lacked torque values for their fasteners. Both suspension components fit correctly and have improved how our class A motorhome handles. Great service from etrailer. 556109

The Sumo Springs made a big difference in the handling of my 38 ft class A. I had already put Sumo Springs on the rear along with an additional rear anti-sway bar, replaced the front ant-sway bar and added a steering stabilizer. Each item made improvements but the front Sumo Springs had the most impact. So much easier to drive. Installation was very easy and the online videos were helpful. I would highly recommend these. 672241

Drove our 38' class A gas coach for 6 months prior to installing Sump Springs. World of difference. Pulling from a parking lot to flat road used to involve 3 or 4 rock's left to right. That is gone. The porposing on the freeway is much better also. Overall feels more stable. Still shutters and has a truck like ride on rough roads and bridge abutments. 640809

Excellent product. I have a 2018 Thor motor home on the Ford chassis. After purchasing it and driving it 100 miles home in sustained 40 mile mph winds, I was starting to regret buying it. Even without wind, it was a handful to drive. I purchased the sumo spring for the front and rear. The change it the handling was way better then I expected. Even in high winds. Nothing will stop all the effects of the wind on a motor home, but I can now drive it 70 mph with confidence. The biggest change was with the side to side rocking. Driving on uneven lanes and on two lane roads with out shoulders is no longer a problem. I installed them myself without removing the tires. You have to use a right angle drill. It took me 5 hours to do it, but I’m 60 years old and slow. I plan on doing other improvements like steering stabilizer and track bar. Adding the sumo spring is the best thing anyone can do to improve handling. I actually enjoy driving my motor home now. 634453

Ordered these 2 piece Sumo springs for the front of my 2012 Itasca 30T class A. This thing rode like an old farm wagon. After installing these springs, it's like night and day. It doesn't ride like a Prevost but it rides a whole lot better than it did. If you have a short wheelbase chassis with 19.5 wheels you need these things. I won't say they were easy to install but it wasn't too bad. I'm 71 and did it in my driveway in the Florida heat in about 2.5 hours. Don't bother shopping around because etrailer has the best price and the best customer service. 526595

Preston did a great job helping me spec in the correct springs for my 2016 Thor Hurricane 27K on a F53 chassis. Placed order with him over phone and received springs two day's later. I just installed them and took Motor home on a test drive around town on bumpy streets and what a difference it made. Drives more like a truck now and less like a boat. I also installed a steering stabilizer spring and did the cheap handling fix to the sway bars. Well worth the time and effort. I did notice that the etralier installation video shows the bottom brackets of the spring installed with the "U" down which is opposite the mfg's printed instructions. I did mine according to the printed instructions cause it seemed to make more sense. Probably no big deal either way. Thanks etrailer. I'll be contacting you guys when ready to do the back end of my motor home. 649992

Amazing! Installed Sumo springs on front of a new 2018 Thor 29.4. F53 frame. BEFORE was very unhappy with drive, could feel every imperfection on the road and steering was very unpredictable! AFTER: Dramatically eliminated the rough ride & steering issues . . . don't hesitate to buy these shocks you will be VERY HAPPY! My experience was so good I purchased the next week rear Sumo springs and the steering stabilize shock (much more improvements, but start with the front springs). 561311

The SumoSprings item #SSF-170-40-2, for my 2017 Georgetown GT3, with the F53 Ford chassis was very easy to order from etrailer.com and was shipped in a very timely manner. They came with easy to follow installation instruction. Be advised that you will need a 1/2" socket with a 3" extension to insert into the factory bump stop to hold bolt while removing the nut on the drivers side. This is not mentioned in the instructions. You will also need the same socket and extension to remove the bolt on the passenger side. One other note, the nut on the drivers side is a 15mm. Other than the afore mentioned 1/2" socket and the 15mm the only other tool you'll need is a 9/16". About a hour and a half to two hour job. I took the motorhome for a test drive and there is a very noticeably improvement in the ride. Very satisfied with my purchase. Thanks, sumosprings for a great product and etrailer for a great price. 566821

Purchased these SumoSpings from etrailer.com who where fantastic, helpful, and friendly throughout this transaction. Can't say enough about how they did everything they could to ensure the purchase and shipping of the product took place in a timely manner. The SumoSprings themselves are great, truly smooths out the ride, increases the stability, and reduces the amount of road jarring that takes place with our 2016 Jayco Precept. The installation is easy enough that most anyone can do it. Although they do leave out a couple of important things to note/steps to take, but most anyone with a little common sense can figure it out. Well worth the investment. 527488

When you look at the bumpstop and all the travel it can go, it makes sense to fill that space with a constant contact chusion, such as the Sumo Spring. I have a 2011 F53 chassis supporting a 32 Class A motothome. 16,000 GVW and no slide. I only installed the fronts to see how they worked. I did it myself and it took about 2 1/2 hours. If I can do it anyone that can work a wrench and understands basic mechanics can do it. I'm 60 and it's a tight space under there and takes some effort, but the jobs not hard, just doing it is hard and uncomfortable. My motorhome would ride very rough on the same roads my car ran smooth. The Sumo Springs were an improvement. They did not solve the rough ride on real poor highway, but on normal rough roads, they were an improvement that will benefit the ride on more roads than not. I now plan to do the rears when I get time. 500303

Worth the wait, they were backordered. UPS dropped them at 10am. We had them installed by 2pm. Install was fairly straight forward and easy. Road test showed a pleasant improvement in handling and smother ride over all. Ride height increased about an inch. Body roll is much less too! Considering doing the back axle now. 546043

I ordered some front sumosprings for my f53 Motorhome from etrailer. They were very helpful in taking my order, I did a price match which took more steps than I thought it should. The Sumosprings installed very easily and seems to improve the overall handling of the motorhome especially with the cornering, the coach seems much more stable and has less body roll . The only problem that I had was that the front carriage bolts on the mounts were too short but I called supersprings and the sent me the correct bolts within a day. I may have to order the rear set later. My order shipped very quickly and arrived in just a few days. Than you etrailer. 503409

I’m very happy with this product. I was able to install with average tools that everyone has at home. This improved the lean factor when going around jug handles and off ramps. I wish I could install the rear ones bu too much involvement for me. 717946

Amazing difference after installing SumoSprings on my motorhome! Not so much sway and rocking when a semi passes me now. Along with heavier anti-sway bars, much improvement in handling. Etrailer is my go to source for all parts. Very competitive pricing and the customer service is the best in my opinion! 714689

First time using etrailor. Very satisfied. Very helpful customer service when ordering. Item received quickly and with all parts. Had the SumoSprings installed ... Wow! Huge difference in my ride, a 31 ft Winnebago. Stable, and much easier to steer. Seems to have quieted down much of the rattling, probably because of the much sturdier ride. Extremely satisfied, and highly recommend. 711826

Wow what a difference. We have had the Sumo springs in for about a year now. We have made several trips including a couple over 1500 miles and the ride and handling are so much better. The key points for us have been the smoother ride and faster recovery from dips and bumps (one porpoise and settle!). Also the improved handling at corners and turns because the rig doesn't lean as much. The big review is from my wife who was not really enjoying our class a before because the ride was making her a little sick. She is very happy now and will be the first to tell folks about the springs. As for install, two old guys that aren't really big DIY car guys took 2 days and a few bruises but we installed at all 4 corners. And without having to call anyone for help! The video from etrailer was a key factor there. The tip on removing the wheels for the rear install was probably the biggest piece I got from it and honestly I'm not sure how you can drill those holes without doing it. I highly recommend the Sumos and etrailer was fantastic in getting products shipped and providing good support info to make the install easier. 710787

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Rebel in Vehicle Suspension

I ordered front and rear roadmaster sway bars, front and rear sumo springs and a Roadmaster steering stabilizer for my 2019 Winnebago Vista 29VE after I picked it up several weeks ago. The drive home was a nightmare trying to keep it on the road. I received all the parts in good shape except the rear sway bar came in with the package all beat up and only had the sway bar not any of the other needed brackets and bolts. I called etrailer and explained the situation, sent pictures of the box and they mailed ma a whole new set immediately not even waiting for UPS to pick up the original one. My son and I installed all of them in my driveway and what a difference! The RV is now sound going down the road even in cross winds and large trucks passing by. Thank you etrailer. 713883

I read a lot about the sway u get from a Rv and how people buy everything under the sun to fix it. I decided to purchase the sumo springs first before any sway bars shocks or any other product people had purchase. They cured all of the problems I was having with the pushing from a semi passing and the wind. I went from a death grip on the steering wheel to a more relaxing ride. I live in the Columbia gorge and we get some heavy winds. So glad I bought them I would recommend these to anyone who would like a more stable ride and and a relaxing drive. 680484

Was not so sure about the ride when I first put them on, it kind of felt every little bump in road, but after I put some highway miles on I am glad they are on. I imagine they will get smoother as chassis leaf springs relax over time 674609

Haven't installed yet but I put the rear sway bar on my 2015 3124 Baystar July 2019 and what a great difference. I'am expecting these will be a great improvement as well. The last addition I will add is the steering stabilizer. 669237

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
  • For your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD the best suspension enhancement kit we have is the SumoSprings Rebel part # SSR-203-47-2. I recommend these over the Timbrens like the part # TGMRCK25D that fit your truck as the SumoSprings give you a much better unloaded ride quality than the Timbrens. I attached an install video for this kit for you to check out as well.

  • Making a 2015 GMC Sierra 3500 Dually with In-Bed Camper More Stable with Reduced Sway and Roll
  • There are a couple of things you can do to stiffen up the suspension on your 2015 GMC Sierra 3500 to combat vehicle sway and body roll. One of the biggest improvements you can make is an upgraded rear anti-sway bar, # RM-1109-169. This will make the truck more stable and easier to handle when out on the road meaning less driver fatigue! To make the truck even more stable you can then add SumoSprings # SSR-203-47-2. These will fit dually models and will work with the anti-sway bar. With...

  • Comparing Roadmaster RAS, Timbrens, and SumoSprings for a 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
  • The best fit and forget systems we have for your 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD are going to be between the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TGMRCK25D and the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-203-47-2. These systems both dampen the load placed on the vehicle and allow the factory suspension to still work accordingly whereas the Roadmaster Active Suspension Custom Leaf Spring Enhancement Kits work by preloading the factory suspension with no dampening...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali Dually with Overload Springs
  • The best suspension enhancement solution for your 2019 GMC Sierra 3500 Denali Dually with overload springs is the Roadmaster Active Suspension Kit part # RAS3611-CHD. This will provide you with the smoothness you are wanting from your ride as it will provide more (adjustable) support to the rear suspension which will get rid of the rough transition into the overload spring of your truck.
