Rear Suspension Support

SumoSprings helper springs are great for RVs or motor homes. Heavy rear loads can cause sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the motor home's weight. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your vehicle's factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

SumoSprings diagram of installation above existing vehicle spring

Each spring in this kit is bolted to two mounting brackets. One bracket is attached to the frame of your vehicle, and the other bracket is attached to the axle, typically above your existing factory leaf spring. Because each helper spring is in full contact at the top and bottom of the suspension's travel, the expanding and contracting action of the SumoSprings enhances your ride under all conditions, not just when it's loaded. And the closed-cell urethane springs act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

SumoSprings compressing under load

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

SumoSprings expanding to allow play in the suspension

These springs extend in height by as much as 50 percent to allow more movement in your suspension when you're traveling unloaded, making your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings expand and compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

This kit comes with custom-fit brackets that are designed to easily bolt onto your vehicle.

Review from a similar SumoSprings Maxim in Vehicle Suspension

We ordered the sumo springs for our 2004 coachmen freedom series. The order came in just a few days as they did when we bought a heavy duty rear stabalizer last year. While I waited for the order ,myself and a grandson put the rear of our rv up on 7500 lb jack stands, two would have been fine but I wanted two more just in case. We took the rear duals off to make the installation easier ,and it was. Instalation went well, only having to move the gas line on passenger side up an inch by moving a clamp. We hoped these would help the light steering issue and related pushing from side when we would get passed on freeway. Not only did it clear up these issues but also quieted the coach down some. All my tests where done at highway speeds with the towed car behind. Thank you again to all at etrailer! Don. Ps. Had issue loading pics will update another time 786989

2019 Thor Outlaw 29J I've only driven this RV for about 1800 miles. I don't know if I could rate these any higher. I ordered both the front and rear Sumosprings and the fronts arrived earlier than the rear, so I went ahead and installed them and went for a 100 mile test drive. Night and day difference, no more harsh ride in the front, and a lot less pogoing. Now I can't wait until the rears come in and I can test those. 539764

Review from a similar SumoSprings Maxim in Vehicle Suspension

Installation of the rear SumoSprings Maxim Custom Helper Springs was accomplished without any problems. All necessary parts to install the springs were supplied in the kit. The SumoSprings have made a great difference in the ride and stability of our 2015 Thor ACE. The ACE ride and sway has improved to the point it is like driving a new RV. The side winds that push on the rear do not make the front want to move toward the center line or road side. I don't feel like I'm in a constant battle to stay in my lane which will vastly improve my driving pleasure. Passing 18 wheeler trucks didn't make our rig move away like before. I feel much safer with this more stable drive. The RV also doesn't seem to have the top heavy sway as we corner we actually have a much safer and smooth transition. Our test drive home from the shop was about 22 miles, with 5 miles on 4 lane and 18 miles on a narrow two lane back road. I feel this gave me the chance to evaluate the improved performance gained by installing the SumoSprings. I know our next trip will be a much safer and pleasant drive Thanks to the SumoSprings. 611841

First time using etrailor. Very satisfied. Very helpful customer service when ordering. Item received quickly and with all parts. Had the SumoSprings installed ... Wow! Huge difference in my ride, a 31 ft Winnebago. Stable, and much easier to steer. Seems to have quieted down much of the rattling, probably because of the much sturdier ride. Extremely satisfied, and highly recommend. 715353

The sumo springs installed by your techs like night and day traveling home after install had vicious cross wind and had know issues keeping it straight with little effort and cornering improvement is measurable. was a needed upgrade as the unit was brand new and very unstable.

Installed Sumo helper springs SSF-180-40-1 and ssr-186-54 on my 2014 Georgetown 328TS on a F53 chassis the springs stabilize the ride also recovers faster on rough roads and doesn't bottom out anymore . Installation time was 2 hours and 45 minutes for front and back . I would definitely recommend this product. I received the springs in three days and service was very helpful from etrailer all it took was a five minute phone call to get the right set of springs for my MH . 376115

Best purchase you can make for the f53 chassis. I can't believe how big a difference these things make. Very nice ride. Can actually drive for hours now and not feel fatigued. I recommend to buy these first thing when you get a new motorhome. 677974

Already had front sumos and my thought on them is lukewarm. I installed the rears and test drove it yesterday. Wow, what a difference when turning corners and entering/exiting driveways with a lip on them. No more rolling from side to side. My wife rode along on the test drive and also felt the difference almost immediately. It just feels stable. I highly recommend this product. Did the install myself in about 2 hours without pulling the wheels, just make sure you have a good right angle drill for the bottom rear holes. 547447

Before installing the Sumo Springs my motor home had a dangerous sway and would bottom out going on and off bridges and over passes. After installation, I have much better control of the vehicle. Sumo Springs have made my vehicle a much more comfortable vehicle to drive. 327544

I am sure these are very good, the only reason for the low rating is to get attention so no one makes the same mistake like i did. These DONOT FIT on a 2018 Jayco Greyhawk equipped with the JRide suspension. The Heliwig helper springs are in the way. etrailer application guide needs to be updated, the picture attached show the Heliwigs are in the way. 612717

Firstly great many thanks to etrailer for advice and and product information. You helped buy the perfect fit for our Fleetwood Tioga ranger. When it came to fitting the sumo springs your video and instructions made it so much easier. It took around 2.5 hours to fit and we didn’t even have to take the wheels off. The difference before and after fitting the sumo springs is definitely noticeable. There is less sway, less sag and overall a better ride. I am glad we went with more heavy duty version that you recommended. Our class C Rv is quite heavy and this kit suits it very well. We would recommend this to anyone who has a ford E450 super duty chassis for their rv 683535

I called to figure out if that Sumo Springs will work on my 2016 Thor ACE 27.1 and he said they would. I ordered them and it was like magic they appeared after a few days as promised. ( ok, maybe not magic). But you get the point. I will be calling in for more things in the future and will always ask for James, outstanding job and teacher. Walked my thru a lot of dumb questions i had and was helpful. I recommend these guys. 887387

Added these rears and also did fronts at the same time. Did the install myself. Took longer than I thought it would, but not bad if you have some mechanical ability. If you do be very careful while drilling the holes on the drivers side as the instructions state, the brake lines are right there and if you don’t put some kind of block between the lines and frame you may damage those lines. Adding the front and rears has improved the handling of driving our motorhome greatly. Just drove 800 miles since installing and the stress from driving was so much less. Hardly noticed the winds and semi’s. Would recommend this product. 881588

Review from a similar SumoSprings Maxim in Vehicle Suspension

My THOR motor coach has the Ford F-53 chassis. I rides like a truck. That should not be surprising as "it is a truck." I purchased and installed these Sumo Springs and even though it will never be "air bag" suspension, the Sumo Spring made a wonderful difference in improving the ride. I would recommend this add on to everyone and as I meet similar motor coaches on the road, I show them the Sumo Springs and I do recommend them. 876232

Really like the feel these give in taking away the sway of the RV! They are a bit complicated to install (we are very mechanically experienced) but not impossible. I suggest removing the wheels to give access for drilling the necessary holes. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase!! 860283

Review from a similar SumoSprings Maxim in Vehicle Suspension

The installation is more difficult than the installation lead me to think it would be but once installed the sumo springs contributed greatly to dampening the roll of the RV as it went through ruts and over speed bumps etc. I am a little surprised at how compressed they are after I let the vehicle down on them and I'd appreciate knowing if others have this level of compression. I had considered a 2cm lift for this vehicle but held off for now. Pictures attached. First pic 4616: Shows that on my rig I had to jack the spring and axle down from the frame in order to get the sumo spring in. Second pic 2816: shows that I was able to put the sumo sprint in the left of the sway bar bracket (which had to be removed). Next I used pry bars to move it to the right into the bracket where it belongs. Third pic 5748: shows the spring installed and compressed by the vehicles weight. Fourth pic 2230: Shows the spring partially installed on the left side. Note that the eyelet on the sway bar bracket on this side (sprinter 3500) makes the install much harder and I had to really jack the springs down to get it on this side. Fifth pic 0054: Left side installed and sway bar reinstalled. Still unloaded Sixth pic 0741: all installed. Seems over compressed to me... 852425

  • SumoSprings Helper Springs Fit for 1999 Fleetwood Bounder Motor Home on F-53 Chassis
For your 1999 F-53 chassis, there are 2 different SumoSprings help spring options, and the correct kit for your motor home will depend on the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). If your motor home's GVWR is between 16,000 pounds and 18,000 pounds, you will want to use the SumoSprings Maxim Custom Helper Springs, Rear Axle # SSR-185-40-1. These springs have a weight capacity of 3,000 pounds. No drilling is required to install this kit and the installation instructions are linked...

I can help find rear suspension help for the 1998 E350 Class C Motorhome. SuperSprings # SSA34 offers a leaf spring style rear suspension stabilizer for your Motorhome if it is a Dual Wheel application. These springs provide 1,900lbs. of additional load leveling ability. For a similar bag you were looking at with the # SSR-185-40-1, I would suggest the Timbren # TFER35092B. This system will offer a 3,600lbs. capacity and will easily install with no drilling. • Is Removal of Wheels Required When Installing SumoSprings on a 2001 Winnebago
Although it isn't required, I do recommend removing your wheels when you install the Front # SSF-170-40-2 and Rear # SSR-185-40-1 SumoSprings on your 2001 Winnebago. I spoke with my contact at SumoSprings who said that they have heard of people installing the kits without removing the wheels but the wheels do restrict the amount of room you have to operate quite a bit so it would be much easier without the wheels in the way. Attached are the installation instructions for you to check...

  • Will SumoSprings for a 1999 Itasca Sunrise Improve Ride Quality
Yes, the SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs will help to smooth out the ride on a Ford F-53 Chassis. The anti-sway bars and steering stabilizers help with stability but don't really do much for ride quality. The springs however work as a cushion between the body and frame therefore offer improvements in ride quality. The correct kit for the rear is part # SSR-185-40-1 and part # SSF-172-40-2 for the front. I suggest the rear if only doing one but both is better.
