Rear Suspension Support

A heavy rear load can cause sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the weight of your vehicle. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your vehicle's factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

Installed spring when it is not compressed

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The closed-cell urethane material allows for smooth contact between the springs and your vehicle. And the springs act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

Installed spring when it is compressed

The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

The helper springs are custom designed to fit your vehicle, and they install easily - no drilling required.

Video Transcript for SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be taking a look at the SumoSprings Solo Line of Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle. You'll want to use eTrailer's fit guide to determine the correct kit for your vehicle. This is what our SumoSprings look like when installed. Yours may look a little different depending on your vehicle. They're gonna replace our factory jounce stops and sit right between our frame and our rear axle. So whenever we're carrying a heavy load, they're gonna give us that extra support that we need. The way our SumoSprings are gonna work is when our suspension starts to sag from the heavy load, these are gonna absorb a lot of that weight. They are gonna work independently from each other so it's gonna help with those off-center loads.

Our springs are gonna have a progressive rate to 'em. So if we have a light load, they're gonna compress softly, still giving us that comfortable ride. But the heavier load we put on 'em, the more they're gonna compress and the more firmness they're gonna have to them. Now comparing to our factory jounce stop, you can see there's a big difference in height. These are gonna give us a lot more compression, whereas our factory jounce stops are really just preventing the axle from hitting the frame. We have a water tank at the bed of our truck as a heavy load or to simulate the tongue weight of a heavy trailer or a fifth wheel. So as I take the truck through my test course, I can definitely tell that there's a load back there.

The engine doesn't seem to be strained that much, but the bumps are extremely harsh and I can definitely feel it resonating through the seat. When I come to the slalom course and I'm going through the turns, it definitely has a lot of body roll and I just generally feel like I need to slow down because it feels likes it's leaning a lot and it's not responding quickly enough to the turns. Now that we have our SumoSprings installed and I have the same load back there, when I'm driving through our course, I can immediately tell a difference. It's much of a smoother ride. Going over the bumps really doesn't feel like anything's back there and it's just a lot more comfortable. When I come into the slalom course, it definitely feels a lot more stable and it doesn't seem to sway as much side to side and it just generally feels like it wants to go faster. These are made of a durable micro cellular urethane that works in temperatures from -25 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and resists damage caused by oils, road salts and UV rays. Compared to air bags, these are maintenance free option with no tubes to run or air pressure to maintain. Both will help level your load and provide a smoother ride.

Airbags can be adjusted to suit your needs whereas the SumoSprings are a fixed option. That completes our look at the SumoSprings Solo Line of Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle.

Very easy to install. Normal ride unless loaded and ride is smooth, even then. Helps with porpoising when hauling a heavy tongue weight. 658065

The installation was relatively easy and straight forward. I’ve not yet attempted to hook up to my 5th wheel to see if it’s going to reduce the sag I was seeing that moved me to try this product. So this review is really about the install. 620456

Shipped fast. Easy to install. Work seamlessly. I put these on a 2018 F150 HDPP. I wanted to retain the factory ride quality when empty and have more support when loaded near my GVWR. With the 1" spacer, they nearly touched the axle (1/8" space) and make the ride very firm. So I removed the 1" spacer and the ride quality was indistinguishable from stock on all but the largest bumps. These Sumosprings engage so smoothly that you can't feel the initial contact, it feels like the springs just get progressively stiffer at a rate that is faster than the stock springs alone. Note, I slightly rerouted a cable because I thought it might contact the Sumospring and wanted more clearance for piece of mind. I don't know if this is necessary on the f150 or not, but it I know others that have done this as well. This adds a little time to the install. But still under an hour including finding misplaced tools. 520312

The product was easy to install. The Tools needed list needs to be updated. Removing bolt is 13mm. Installing new bolts are 15mm. Also the nuts that are tack welded inside the frame will break loose if any rust or debris are on the threads. Back up wrench is near impossible if to fit if the size is not known. End up cutting the old bolt because of this. That’s not your products fault. That’s Fords issue. With the 1” spacers provided it raise my F150 4 1/2”. Stiffened the ride up. Ready to haul my 5th wheel. NICE 452641

The Sumo Springs are still performing well. I Hauled our 29.5 5th Wheel from Upstate NY TO Florida through a major 4 State nor’easter. We have also bought a 16’ cargo trailer and hauled it to it’s full weight capacitie. The truck is still sitting high.

I installed these on a 2017 Ford F-150 SuperCab to stop the initial rear-end sag common with towing a trailer. These pickup trucks have springs regulated for a very smooth ride WHILE EMPTY, as most PU's are used as a personal sports car. The SSR product removes the rear sag, without causing a harsh ride. Easy to install... no maintenance needed... no air-bags to constantly leak. I had already installed Hellwig after-market sway bars on the rear, and also replace the puny Ford OEM front sway bar with a Hellwig product. Together with the Sumo product, there is NO side-sway at all. This product provides extra support, without detriment to the ride comfort. 682449

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

My order arrived 4 days early, WOW. I did use 2 flat blade screw drivers to remove the old bumpers. When I installed the new Sumo Springs I put a little liquid soap on the top edges, this helped pop them in. I also used a piece of 2X4 to help push them in, and quickly released the floor jack and this seated them in fully. Quick install took about 20 min. I have less than 1" at the bottom. Unloaded ride is same as before. With my trailer attached (1200 LBS hitch weight) the short test drive I felt much better control and less bounce. Very happy with product and etrailer. THANK YOU! 517005

This was a very easy install. It took less than an hour. I installed them on a 2018 Forest River Forester which is on an E450 chassis. My rig is equipped with Firestone airbags in the back so I only needed the Sumos in the front. I’m looking forward seeing how they improve the handling of my RV. I haven’t ventured out on the road. 538371

Installed these on a 2017 Mercedes 2500 Sprinter/2018 Roadtrek SS Agile. I already have these on the rear where they work great reducing sway and bounce, wanted the same handling in the front.. I found it much easier to remove the wheel to access the nut holding the bump stop in place and to place the Sumo Spring in position. Overall an easy install. 658576

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I put these on my 2017 2 door jeep wranger. I have factory springs no lift. I put on aftermarket front bumper with wench, rear bumper, roof rack. With all the other gear in the jeep, frig, and all camping gear, and plans on putting on a rooftop tent. The ride was a harsh because off all the extra weight, so i thought i would give it a try. I first got air bags for the rear and they worked great, improving the ride, but now the front was still harsh. So i thought i would try the sumosprings. All i can say about the sumosprings is that there awesome. I can now go over bumps on dirt roads, paved roads, train tracks, and it dosnt beat the crap out of me. Jeep feels like its happy. 518093

Great product. Very easy to install. I installed Sumo springs front and rear on my class C Sprinter-based RV (Winnebago View) as part of a suspension upgrade to improve handling in cross winds. The other suspension upgrades included a Hellwig rear sway bar and Bilstein rear shocks. The handling improvement was dramatic. No more sway when being passed by semi’s and much, much better handling in cross winds. I am very happy with the Sumo springs. 656765

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I've had these for 1 year now for my 2016 Tundra and they are exactly what I needed!!! I couldn't be happier! Prior to purchasing and installing these, when I towed my 2 horses with my 2 horse slant bumper pull trailer, I was concerned about cargo weight in the bed of my truck so I was limited to gear I could bring camping and hunting season with my truck. Since adding these I can pull the horses and load my truck bed to the max including horse feed, hunting gear, coolers with food you name it and my truck doesn't even squat a bit! The ride is great with a load or without and my performance off road is still fine too! These proved to be a great solution to my needs and frankly better than pricey air bags. 673850

Were glad to hear that youre pleased with your purchase. Please keep in mind that the Sumo Springs product will not increase the capacity of your rear truck axle. The tongue weight of the trailer plus the weight of the cargo carried should not exceed the trucks rear axle capacity.

These were installed on a 2017 Sprinter 2500. They get 5 stars for ride improvement but the 4 stars is for the installation instructions. I could not install them following the directions. An installation video from Sumo Springs would be most helpful. In the end, I used the instructions for another similar product and they went right in. My wife and I feel it is a 5 star improvement in the ride. The Sprinter feels more solid on the road, and going over bumps, especially at an angle, they really cut down on the body swaying. Product is highly recommended. 524172

The Sumo Springs do make a big difference in the body roll and stability of the Sprinter, which is an RV rolling at around 8,000 lbs +. Just added Sumo Springs to the front and that has improved the handling even more.

2009 Tacoma Offroad TRD DCSB Needed to correct squatting under load, and when towing small travel trailer. Install was easy and straight forward. Stock U-bolt nuts use 19 mm deep well sockets for removal and replacement. Sumo spring required jacking up the frame a couple of inches to allow install above leaf springs. Torque nuts to 90 ft-lbs. Need to re-torque after 500 miles. Highly recommend. 680497

Product was delivered and was a breeze to install! A friend happened to be around when I got started and we had them both installed in less than 20 minutes with the help of a car lift available to us. Didn't quite raise the bed of the truck as far as I hoped it would, but still a great product! Guess that's just the Baja Edition? But did find out I might need different shocks so that will be my next step soon. 508762

Put these in my 2007 Tundra. I could tell a great difference just rounding corners with stability with out a trailer on. I like my trucks to ride like trucks and this for sure helped with that. Also when I hooked up my enclosed car trailer loaded there was a huge difference in the amount of squat it had versus before I put them on. 597026

It was interesting to note the height of the OEM versus these springs - these are much longer. I installed these front springs and the rear springs together and they significantly reduced the roll in my class B rv. I was able to install these myself and, at least for me, it was a lot easier using a second person to hold the spring in place below while I installed the retaining nut above. I used the appropriate jack and jack stands. 591696

2011, F53, 22,000 lbs chassis. After having adjusted tire pressure, installing new shocks and a rear trac bar, these are the icing on the cake. I installed the front Sumo’s and was so impressed I immediately purchased the rears. The side-to-side sway is almost completely gone, my motorhome tracks so much better now, and it actually soaks up a lot more of the little bumps. Great service arrived in 3 days. Installed the Sumo springs last weekend. It was about a 15 minute job on a P32 chassis. I used the supplied spacers and it raised the rear end about 1/2 inch and really reduced the body roll. They replaced the stock rear jounce bumpers which were shot. This is what should have come on the motorhome from the factory. 151532

100% stock 2017 Tundra SR 4WD V8. Bought these to provide a bit more stability when towing 27' 8600 GVW tag along camper usually running around 8000lb actual weight. Without a doubt - excellent product. With research you will find that the Ford E450 rubber bump stops are installed using metric while the Sumo product goes on with standard. The passenger side rear had a bracket attached holding brake lines so using a washer was out of the question. Overall they went on easily and when tested made turning so much more comfortable. Top used to sway so much, now WOW! I should have done this when I first bought the rig. Thanks Sumo and etrailer! 605554

Front & Rear Sumo Springs Just installed the Sumo Springs I ordered and oh WOW!!!!! That is the finishing touches to my suspension on my 32 ft Class C on an E450 chassis and love the results. Bought our coach a year ago and installed Hellwig sway bars ( front & Rear ) Bilstien shocks and Safe T Plus Steering control and that made a huge difference to drivability but then decided to add Sumo Springs, Oh My Goodness with all that I’ve done our coach drive down the highways and byways rock solid. The sumos weren’t to difficult to install considering this ole man has had 3 back surgeries and 2 bad knees but we got it done and I was blown away on the test drive. I have a 2014 Winnebago View on a Mercedes 3500 chassis. Installed these replacement bump stops along with a Hellwig sway bar. First, they really are as easy to install as the instructions suggest. The most difficult part was figuring out how to get the floor jack high enough. Second, after these two minor upgrades that took about 2 hours to install, I can not believe how well the coach handles now. Unbelievable improvement for little $$$ and easy installation. I would recommend to anyone. etrailer has always been super easy to work with on top of the products, I initially ordered the wrong bump stops (2500), easily exchanged for the proper items. 178404

08 Winnebago View on an 07 Sprinter chassis. To reduce the side-to-side rocking that is inherent in this tall, narrow, heavy vehicle, I decided to try the Sumo SSR-335-47's on the rear bumpstops. Using the vehicle bottle jack, I raised the rear tires almost off the ground, one side at at time, to provide enough room to fit the Sumos into place. The old bumpstops simply pop out with force from a couple of screwdrivers, and the Sumos simply slide into the existing brackets. The fit is precise and snug. I put soapy water on the brackets and applied a bit of force to wedge the Sumos into place. It's that simple. The difference is pronounced, with significantly less rocking over minor road undulations. I'm impressed with this product, and wish I'd done this simple modification long ago. 156528

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I got the typical on time delivery from etrailer and the product arrived and appears as displayed on their webpage. I installed these on a Jayco Melbourne 24L motor home (2018 Mercedes 3500 Sprinter) with no problems. One small error in the manufacturers instruction sheet suggests using a 10mm socket to remove the stock bumpers prior to installing these. It is actually a 13mm you need. I bought these as part of a plan to reduce sway in this motor home. I figure these are part of an overall plan incorporating them with at least two other products. I have also installed a beefier rear sway bar and am considering one other piece to improve handling. These by themselves help but do not solve the whole performance improvement I am seeking. 577165

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

Product came in just fine and right on time. Installation was as simple as could be. Couldn't accurately give a review on their performance as this was for a customer's vehicle and we aren't using them. All the ones that we have used have worked remarkably well, however. 397591

Installed the black sumo only 2 wekks ago.Should have done that right after reception last year. Reduce sway totally when i leave my yard(3 inches bump). Don,t need stabilizator, floor is very solid and stable. On the road test for only 10 miles, there is a much better stability. I already have yellow sumo on front suspension where suspension was weak and direction instable.those problems have disapeared. Very satisfied client. 07 view sprinter 2006 579304

Review from a similar SuperSprings SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I purchased the Sumo springs (rear) for my 2008 Dodge 2500 after they were highly recommended by the RV dealership where I purchased my Palamino truck camper. Not only did they ride really well on my 200 mile trip from Waco Tx to San Antonio but there is no rear end sag . My truck has a leveling kit in the front. I am a believer in these Sumo springs and would recommend them highly. 517946

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for 2016 Ford F-150 Crew Cab 4x4
  • The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System # TFRTT1504E is a confirmed fit for your truck. With a 1,100 lb tongue weight trailer, this system will help to keep the rear end from squat and your headlights from being too high to see the road as intended. These will act as a shock absorber as well as helping to stabilize your truck when under load. These spring are made for severe service vehicles like tow trucks so I don't recommend then for your truck as they can actually cause your truck...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for 2016 Ford F-150 with 1,500 Pound Trailer Tongue Weight
  • The 1,000 pound capacity SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-117-40 for 4 Wheel Drive and # SSR-116-40 for 2 Wheel Drive referenced in your question will offer a smoother empty ride in your 2016 Ford F-150 than a higher rated alternative spring. It is important though to keep in mind that any weight coming from behind the rear axle of your F-150 and from the trailer hitch itself should also be considered when choosing a suspension enhancement system, as this will be included to...

  • Timbren rear helper springs # TFR1504D for your 2012 Ford F-150 4x4 will definitely help with the sag you are experiencing when towing your Stealth toy hauler. But when not towing or carrying a load in the truck bed you will likely experience a stiffer ride, more jarring on bumps than the stock suspension. For a similar option that features a softer spring style we have SumoSprings # SSR-117-40 rated at 1,000 pounds, or # SSR-117-47 rated at 1,500 pounds. These springs will have more...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement For 2016 Ford F-150 Crew Cab 4WD With 6.5 Foot Box
  • For your Ford F-150 Lariat Crew Cab with 6.5 foot bed and 4WD, I recommend the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Springs - Rear Axle # AL57284. This system like the Roadmaster Active Suspension Kit # RAS3611-Y is adjustable, so it is more versitile for your specific needs. The Timbren springs # TFR1504E and SumoSprings # SSR-117-47 are not adjustable. The nice part about the jounce springs is that they require no maintainance, so you just install and go. They compress and add stability...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for 2016 Ford F-150 4x4
  • The Roadmaster Active Suspension Kit # RAS3611-Y is the correct fit for your 2016 Ford F-150 4x4. This is a mechanically active system designed to eliminate the bounce you are experiencing. It will allow adjustment for the best fit on your truck but doesn't require any additional adjustment so it doesn't need to be changed for when loaded or unloaded. The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs - Rear Axle # SSR-117-47 are also a great option to eliminate the bounce by helping to level...

  • Suspension Enhancement for 2018 Ford F-150 With 6 Inch Lift
  • I am not familiar with the Pro Comp kit; I did look it up and from the installation manual it seems like all parts of the rear suspension were affected. Can you confirm if there is any type of interference with the leaf spring? Your only option is going to be a kit that attaches above the factory leaf spring but if there is interference of any kind then it would not be a fit.

  • There are suspension enhancement options for you to use in addition to installing a gooseneck hitch on your 2016 Ford F-150 XLT FX4, however, due to the tabs on the SumoSprings, like part # SSR-117-47, I cannot confirm whether they will be compatible with the gooseneck brackets. What I recommend doing is installing the SuperSprings Custom Suspension Stabilizer and Sway Control Kit # SSA28 which do not mount to the frame at all. • The SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SSR-117-47 are a perfect option for your 2019 Ford F-150 that is towing a relatively light trailer and they also are not going to require any type of maintenance. The SumoSprings are going to significantly improve the body roll you might otherwise experience and help to keep your truck level, which in turn is going to give you better handling of your F-150 and a more controlled towing experience overall. • For your 2013 Ford F-150 4x4 with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, I recommend using the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-117-47 which are rated for 1,500 lbs. The reason I recommend going with the 1,500 lb system over the 1,000 lb system (part # SSR-117-40) is because it's better to have too much capacity than not enough. The SumoSprings are also made of a much softer material than their counterpart, the Timbrens so they won't have that jolting feeling while you are unloaded...

  • Yes, the SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-117-47 work on the 2016 Ford F-150 with a 3 inch lift if you use the 1 inch spacer included in the kit. The springs are 9 inches long and you have 11 inches from the axle to the frame. You will have 1 inch of space between the spring and the axle which is fine. I have attached a video of an installation on a 2017 Ford F-150.

  • The note about the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2542 only being compatible with a B&W hitch has to do with the in-bed gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch brackets. If you are talking about a trailer hitch then the Kit # F2542 will fit perfectly and have no issues. • Best Option for Fighting Squat on 2016 Ford F-150 When Using Weight Distribution for Trailer
  • The first thing that I thought of when reading about your situation is that you may want to make sure that your WD system is rated properly for your setup. We have, unfortunately, found that dealers tend to do a poor job at educating customers and people end up using systems that are too light or too heavy for their towing setup. Be sure that you add the loaded tongue weight (TW) of your trailer (the 800 lbs - 900 lbs) along with the weight of any cargo that you have sitting in the bed...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 2016 Ford F-150 Towing 7,500 lb Travel Trailer
  • When towing a bumper pull trailer the best way to fight suspension sag is actually with a weight distribution system and not helper springs. Not only does a WD system reduce the sag on the vehicle but in doing so it distributes some of the tongue weight up to the front axle of the tow vehicle which improves braking and handling. Especially in emergency situations. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2015 Ford F-150 Towing Fifth Wheel

These jounce-style springs feature progressive load control that will provide you with a much smoother ride when compared to the Timbren springs, especially when empty or hauling a lighter load. These springs are designed for models with stock height (not lifted) and for models with a gross vehicle weight rating of 7,500 pounds. The ride quality, especially when loaded and/or going over bumps on rough terrain, will be much improved using these helper springs.

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 2013 Ford F-150 Towing Travel Trailer that Sways

Suspension enhancement will help a trailer tow level, but a WD system will actually distribute some of the trailer's tongue weight up to the front axle of the tow vehicle which will help with braking, handling, and sway prevention as well as preventing sag. The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure...
