Rear Suspension Support

Towing or hauling a heavy load can cause rear sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the weight of your vehicle. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your vehicle's factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

Installed spring when it is not compressed

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The closed-cell urethane material allows for smooth contact between the springs and your vehicle. And the springs act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

Installed spring when it is compressed

The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

The helper springs are custom designed to fit your vehicle, and they install easily - no drilling required.

Video Transcript for Review of SuperSprings Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - SS85FR

Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle. Now, this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2016 and newer Chevrolet Colorado, and the GMC Canyon trucks, and on a custom fit part like this, always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle. It'll show if this'll work for your application. Now this kit, these are helper springs that'll upgrade your vehicle's rear suspension for improved driver control and comfort. These do keep your vehicle level when you're towing or hauling a heavy load, and they'll even help to absorb bumps and shocks, minimize sway.

They are progressive load control, meaning the springs will compress according to the weight of your cargo. So if you have a lighter load, the springs compress easily at first for nice soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. And then if you have a heavier load put on them, the springs compress by as much as 80% for support. These do work independently from each other to compensate for any off-center loads, reduce body roll during sharp turns. They are made of a durable microcellular urethane. They're designed to work in temperatures from a negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and these do resist damage that can be caused by oils, road salts, UV rays.

They do offer minimal lateral expansion, which means the springs will compress vertically instead of to the sides, so they aren't easily damaged. When operating in any tight spaces, they are maintenance-free. There's no tubing to run or air pressure to monitor like with air springs, and they are a simple, no-drill installation. Does include everything laid out here on the table, the two jounce-style springs are included, a brake spacer with the hardware, some thread locker, and a nice set of instructions that'll describe how this all installs. This part is made in the USA. Specs on this, the weight capacity at 50% compression is 1000 pounds.

One note to remember is the SumoSprings will not increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity. But that should do it for the review on the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs for your rear axle..

Review from a similar SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

2015 Frontier Crew cab Desert Runner (purchased the yellow Sumo Springs). Easiest install ever! 18mm deep socket and long breaker bar for breaking nuts loose. Removed factory bumpstop, install sumo bracket and retighten U bolts to 58 foot pounds. After installing both brackets, lifted back of truck up 4 inches to install sumo spring with blue lock tight on bracket bolt, tighten sumo spring onto bracket and lowered truck off the jack. Overall it raised the back of my truck bed 1 inch. Ride is stiffer with no bed roll in the turns. Loaded my 24 foot travel trailer with load leveler- equalizer bars and gained 3 inches (less “squat”.) Truck is level now vs nose high (without the sumo springs). Definitely an upgrade that was needed in 2015 when I first bought the truck!!!

Love the product fairly easy to install. Took just about two hours for all four Sumosprings. The front was a bit more challenging and I’ve seen somewhere else about using a plastic bag that you can cut up and inserted in the 13 mm deep socket, this will keep the nut in place while threading. Your videos are very helpful and strongly suggest that you create a how too for the front replacement

Love them. Highly recommend both front and rear. Easy to install

Review from a similar SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I just finished installing the Sumo Springs to my 2020 Ram 3500. The install was super easy. Instruction were easy to follow and the whole thing took less time than I thought. I won’t know how they perform until I pull the 5er out of storage this spring, but I am ready. My only question and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was I thought they would sit closer to the axle than they did, may 2” from axle and I would have liked may 1” maybe I could have used another spacer and longer flat head screw to bring it closer but we will see when I put the weight on the truck. I included picks if someone wants to give me their opinion. So far I am really happy with them.

Front & Rear Sumo Springs Just installed the Sumo Springs I ordered and oh WOW!!!!! That is the finishing touches to my suspension on my 32 ft Class C on an E450 chassis and love the results. Bought our coach a year ago and installed Hellwig sway bars ( front & Rear ) Bilstien shocks and Safe T Plus Steering control and that made a huge difference to drivability but then decided to add Sumo Springs, Oh My Goodness with all that I’ve done our coach drive down the highways and byways rock solid. The sumos weren’t to difficult to install considering this ole man has had 3 back surgeries and 2 bad knees but we got it done and I was blown away on the test drive. I highly recommend the Sumo products.

Comments
Still love the Sumos, they do their job. Class C is so much more a pleasure t drive even in wind and large semi trucks passing by, barely a wiggle. I would highly recommend these on any motorhome

These Sumo springs are just what I needed for my 2012 Nissan Frontier. We (wife and I) have a A-Liner camper. We have recently replaced torsion axle with a more robust one and also went from C range to D range tires. We needed something to reduce the sag of tongue load. I was unsure about which model to choose but after speaking with friendly, knowledgeable Customer service rep I was assured the 610-40 was the proper option. Test drive went extremely well. Only minimal drop in hitch and no adverse change in ride. Very pleased! Simple to install.

Review from a similar SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

I have a 2020 Silverado 1500 that I tow a 30 foot long 6500 pound dry travel trailer with. The stock suspension was a little soft and bouncy which made towing a bit of a white knuckle ride. I ordered the SumoSprings in hopes of helping this and I must say I think they did the trick. The install wasn't as straight forward though as the supplied spacers were not thick enough to properly space the plate that holds the spring far enough off the frame to clear the factory welded cup. Lucky for me I work at a machine shop so I turned a couple of new spacers out of aluminum the proper thickness which in my case was .700 thick compared to the supplied 1/2 inch thick. In order to use the supplied spacers I would have to rotate the mounting plate into the opening of the welded cup which put the springs in the wrong location. After all is said and done I towed with it this weekend and it was night and day. Extremely happy with the ride now and if it weren't for those spacers I would have given 5 stars. The truck still rides close to factory unloaded which is what I wanted and the springs really only come into play when the camper is attached. Nice product otherwise!

It's a Great Product! These Sumo Springs are just what I needed for the front of my 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport that was sagging with the weight of the snowplow mounted, and the ride did not suffer at all after installing these Sumo Springs.

I added these to my Tacoma. With the GFC camper, Solar panels, Marine battery and refrigerator in the back of the truck and the weight of the trailer tongue I gained over 2 inches of height in the back after adding the sumo springs. The body roll is much less now as well. The only dissappointment is not with etrailer or the Sumo Springs, it is with UPS. Initially they scheduled the delivery on Wednesday then changed it to Thursday. Thursday came in went and still didnt have it. Finally arrived on Friday. Thanks for the delay UPS.

Just had PEP boys install (it was 22 degrees outside) both front and rear. This review will be duplicated for the rear as well. Excellent, been meaning to purchase and install on my 2007 GMC 2500HD Classic. My pickup is now my weekend drive for the toy stores (Lowes, Home Depot...) Immediate improvement on handling, turning and stopping. Have not connected a trailer to it yet. Previous experience with Summo on 2005 E450 Shuttle Bus and a 2018 Thor Axis 25.5 RV.

Review from a similar SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

etrailer had a great explanation for which spring to get based on how I planned to tow. Ordering and delivery was quick without complication. When I received the box all the parts were there. I own a 2020 Ram Rebel 4x4 with a tow package. I used a couple 4x6 blocks to place under the tire jack and lifted the body via the trailer hitch enough to get the springs into place. The OEM stops came out by hand. The instructions are basic and could have included a better illustration. I started with the passenger side and quickly realized that I needed an open socket wrench. I ended up buying a set because the nuts are difficult to get to. Once I had the 1/2” open socket wrench for the top nuts the job went smoother and much quicker. The passenger side required some manipulation for the bracket to clear the spring and be aligned with the axle stop. The drivers side assembled exactly like the illustration stated. I drove it over my normal curbs and speed bumps and the rear end is harsher than I expected but not noticeably so on the open road. The truck sits ever so slightly on the springs with the spacer in and I expect this to eliminate the sag when I tow. I may consider taking the spacer out if I don’t like the ride. There are two shorter bolts included if this is desired though there is no explanation for this in the instructions.

I Received the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs shipment today and installed them on my 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 standard cab long bed truck. It took about 30 minutes to install the helpers springs. I watched the install video and read the installation instructions on the etrailer website while waiting for the shipment to arrive. They were easy to install without jacking up the truck, I laid flat on my back and slid under the truck on my garage floor and had no problems at all. After installation I hooked up my 20 ft travel trailer and went on a test drive. The helper springs made a big difference and gave a more solid stable performance with the truck while towing my 5,000 lb travel trailer. I've installed airbags on previous trucks and I believe for the money and easy installation this is the best option to improve towing performance.

Replace the failed original bump stops today. After figuring out that I had to remove the old bump stop brackets from the top, the installation only took about 40 minutes. The back of truck used to sag quite a bit when boat was hooked up, now it only sags 1 3/4 inches. I have not hauled the boat on bumpy roads or highway speeds yet so the ride quality is yet to be determined.

Very happy with this product. My 2018 F150 was sagging when towing my fifth wheel camper. These leveled it out. When you hit a bump UNLOADED, they do make contact with the axle and stiffen your ride a bit but other than that ride is normal on relatively smooth roads. But this is to be expected if you're going to make your truck capable of carrying heavier loads. During installation, on the driver's side, I did have to slightly bend one vehicle bracket out of the way so the spring wouldn't contact it during operation. See photo, silver bracket near two zip ties which I added to further secure wiring harness to the bracket.

Review from a similar SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

We pull an off-road teardrop camper with our 2013 Toyota Tacoma and were looking for a little help with the rear end sag when we have that hitched plus putting some weight in the back of the truck (firewood, water, etc). Our Tacoma is lifted (2.5") but the lift kept the stock springs with an added Deaver leaf to help with the notoriously soft Toyota springs. However, with the shell and ~300 pounds of weight in the back, it still sagged, especially with another 250 lbs of tongue weight from the trailer. The Sumos have eliminated that sag, even with bigger loads in the bed, eliminated body roll (also notoriously bad with Tacomas) and didn't destroy the ride for day to day driving. There might be a slight bit more stiffness when hitting speed bumps, but definitely not bad at all. If anything, I would say it IMPROVED the ride and handling. The springs themselves were simple to install, less than half an hour start to finish. Some reviews have said they were bumping the frame after installing but we had about 1/2" gap on both sides. The only "specialty" tool would be a torque wrench capable of 90 lbs to get it to spec. We considered Firestone air bags but after talking with the reps at e-trailer, we decided on these and couldn't be happier. Reasonably priced (half the price of air bags), no maintenance, great customer service...can't argue with anything at all.

Initial impression is good. I wanted to stop some of the deflection I get when I hook up to our fifth wheel. I have a new 2020 Ford F350 diesel, single rear wheel, crew cab and with 3200 pounds of hitch weight I was dropping about 3 inches. The overload springs were resting on the stop. The black Sumo Springs cut that to about 2" and the overloads no longer hit the stop. I have not done a tow to see how it rides but I did try the truck solo to make sure the springs did not affect my empty ride. They don't at all. I left about an inch space between the springs and the axle stops which seems to be about right. I did call Sumo Springs and they recommended the black lighter capacity springs which I think will be just right.

Easy one person install! Key is a 13mm deep socket. I used the provided jack of my 2015 Winnebago View to lift the front wheel of the ground (also used additional jackstands for safety). I was able to reach over the tire from the outside to remove existing bump stop and install the SumoSprings. The ride improvement (when coupled with the rear SumoSpring rear helpers) is incredible! No more extreme sway/roll when transitioning across uneven surfaces! Best is the almost total elimination of swaying when passed by tractor trailer rigs on the interstate! Highly recommend this modification especially for Class C rigs.

Very prompt delivery and great “in-route” communication. Installed on a 2019 RAM ProMaster 3500 (configured as a Winnebago Travato). Easy, easy install. Used to replace the factory bump stops. Installed using the extra provided spacer and as many have said, raised the rear height by one inch, and provided the added stability to limit sway and improved straight line stability. So far a great product and great purchase experience.

Comments
Still going strong after 12 months and 10,000 miles. Ive since installed the front spring helpers and been very pleased with the overall improved handling of the van. I highly recommend doing at least the rear bump stops.

Could not be easier to install. Removed OEM and installed these in less than 15 minutes. Increased front wheel well clearance and leveled out the front of the motor home. I no longer feel like I am going to slide out of my seat while driving. What a difference these things make to the ride. I don't feel like a porpoise when driving over rough roads. After a couple of bumps the ride smooths out. They also reduce the side to side sway when cornering or when a large semi rolls by. Well worth the money.

This installation was on a 2014 F-150. I tow a Winnebago Micro-Mini 5th wheel with a hitch weight of 1,060 lbs. Frame to axle stock was 7.5 inches. The Sumo springs without the spacer lifted my PU 0.5 inches. The Sumo springs are always in contact with the axle so my ride has greatly changed. As I am an outdoorsman and travel on a lot of gravel roads fishing and hunting, I will have to remove the Sumo springs when I am not using the trailer as the ride is totally unbearable on any unpaved road. As for using the Sumo springs with the 5th wheel, when loaded the springs compress 0.5 inches to a axle to frame distance of 7.5 inches (ie stock) The ride with the camper is very stable and there is no excessive bounce. The springs perform very well when loaded. In my research of this product it is advertised that there is a 1 inch gap between the sumo spring and the frame to allow for a comfortable ride. That is not true and is the reason for my poor review.

Review from a similar SumoSprings Solo in Vehicle Suspension

Why did choose the SUMO springs? I considered: Timbren, and several airbags and the SUMO springs. After all, I decided maintenance free is my highest priority therefore, the airbags fell of the list. I chose SUMO over Timbren. The Timbren are a bit shorter than the Sumo springs that means they engage later / under higher load. Moreover, the Timbren are rated for ~5000 lbs that means they are very stiff. I expect the Sumo springs to meet my needs: they engage early and add ~ 1500 lbs which should be sufficient if the truck tows a trailer with a hitch weight of ~600 lbs. Pros: - very simple to install - no special tools or setup required - parts fit well - top quality Cons: - price vs competition Installation in hour or so on my drive way. On the RAM 2019 (new style) removing the OEM bumpers was easy - just wiggle them out with your hand. For the installation of Sumo helper springs it is helpful to use a 13mm a Ratcheting Combination Wrench. That will speed up to tighten the 8 nuts per spring. You still can use just a regular 13 mm combination wrench. Now what is the result of the springs? So far, I used the truck without hitch load. The springs engage early. The ride without load is a bit stiffer than before. The real test will be once I hock up the trailer. The trailer has a hitch weight of ~600lbs. Stay tuned.

Super easy to install, and is a perfect fitting, direct replacement of OEM hardware. Half an hour, and done. Don’t forget to torque fasteners properly, and use Type-E torque seal/mark, to do it like a pro.
