An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the vehicle.

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the truck's weight, as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a custom-fit bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the truck level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the truck. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the Competition

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

Product seems to be high quality and the delivery was fairly quick. Extremely easy for me and my 12 year old son to complete in less than a half hour. Just put them on today so won't know how well they'll work until I put a load on the truck. I had the Timbren's on my 1997 Ford F-250 and they worked great so I'm hoping for the same results. 391227

Came just as advertised. Waiting to install. As an aside: You might want to make sure all box sides are securely taped as the USPO delivered the box with the un-taped side completely pulled away from the box and the suspension parts were pushing out of the box. 504944

I recently had an air bag fail on my truck while loaded with our Lance 855 on the truck and pulling a small utv trailer. The shop that helped me had a set of Timbren bump stops. We modified my air bag mount to gain a little more height, installed bump stop and was on my way. My rig actually rode better than it did with the air bags, so I ordered these heavier duty Timbrens and installed them. Quick and easy, and after install I loaded the camper on my truck and it only settled 1". Perfect ! I can already tell these are going to be great. Thanks again to etrailer for fast shipping and great price ! 175160

the timbren tdr3500ca were a very easy install on my 2018 ram drw 4x4. The included spacers were needed and left about 1/2 inch clearance. empty ride is same. Will load arctic fox 990 soon and expect great results. I elected not to reinstall my air bags, when trading trucks. I also have upper stable loads and will not miss the air bags. ordering was easy and free shipping was fast. 612456

Thanks for the review and follow up Yuriy. You might consider checking out the Super Springs brand of suspension enhancement items. Their springs are made of a microcellular urethane, that resists abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F -33 C to 93 C. For your trucks rear axle and the 4WD version I recommend the # SSR-301-47-2

Installed on my 2007 Ram 3500 because I wanted basic leveling & stability under the load of my 5th wheel. I didn't want a complicated air bag system. Summer trips in the mountains of MT & the Pacific NW. 3 months of snowbirding throughout southern AZ this winter. Very satisfied, so I just swapped them onto my new 2018 Ram 3500. I didn't let them go with my trade-in. Just what I need, no effect when empty - engaged when I need them. 628560

Timbren is expensive but have proven their worth so far. I have added another one of their products to my rig more improving its handling. I have run air bags in the past and these cushions far outperform that I will never go back. No maintenance and no hassle since I installed them. The were a slight challenge installing due to close tolerances and needed a medium well socket. My great friends at E-Trailer have also proven to be EXCELLENT, USA representatives that I continue to deal with and send many more customers their way. 260123

I am writing this shortly after completing the install so I am trying to tone it down a bit. Reviews of this product install suggested 20-30 minutes to complete. It took me about 90 minutes. My biggest initial concern was removing the factory bump stops. I soaked the bolts with liquid penetrant a few days before the install. The bolts came out easily. The bolts which attach the rubber spring to the bracket would not tighten completely. The nut is tack welded to the underside of the mounting plate. On both brackets, the nut was not centered on the hole and the tack weld deformed the nut. I had to chase the threads first to be able to install the bolt and complete tighten the rubber spring. One of the brackets was labeled left with an arrow pointing to the front. The left side terminology in the instructions could be more clear with driver side notation. Overall, this should have been an easy install. Product quality could be better. I am a bit concerned with proximity of the brake lines. I will have to seen what it looks like when loaded. Performance when loaded still to be evaluated. 528960

Comments

I took a look at your photo and I can not tell if the spring is directly above the axle but if it is, the spring will hit the axle before it hits the brake line. There are elongated holes in the brackets that allow for some adjustment. The best thing you can do is move the spring as center over the axle as possible.

I am dealing with Timbren. The washer for mounting the rubber spring to the mounting plate clearance hole is too small for the bolt diameter. The washer is not something you can get out without damaging in my opinion. The bolt also will not thread completely into the mounting plate because of poor threads ( not tapped correctly). Galling of bolt if you try to tighten. Very poor QC or inspection at Timbren or wherever. Once again, working eith Timbren on this. Maybe you should check you kits at etrailer!! 704185

Comments

I pulled the kits we have in stock and they check out fine. The washer inside the spring had the same diameter as the spring for the bolt. Could you send in a photo of your kit?

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I first put the Timbrens on the rear to help stop bouncing and porpoising on highways and bridge ends when towing. The rears have a gap and do not touch the springs until the truck is loaded, working great and keeping a smooth unloaded ride. The front Timbrens fit snugly and touch all the time. The ride is firm and a bit harsh with my unloaded truck having a snow plow spring option. When my trailer 30 ft trailer is hooked up, the front of the truck is slightly lighter. Towing with the Timbrens is nice and the bounce and rebound porpoising is very controlled. I would like the front Timbrens to be a little softer when the truck is unloaded, but I think these units are a nice add-on for better control, safety, and preventing damages. I had the fronts installed at the shop when rotating tires and a front end alignment. The rears installed easily. 691475

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

TOTALLY AWESOME PRODUCT.....Though I wished I had them when we trailered the hot rod out to New Hampshire last month. We received this item late as it was on back order for far too long. I did get a chance though to put the levelers through their paces when using our 18' lo-boy to haul large limbs, branches and other brush to compost site. The truck did NOT flinch and inch downward as it did WITHOUT the levelers. I liked too that the installation was basically pretty easy. I highly suggest going this way and leaving the air bags for the big truckers. Don't have to fuss with filling or deflating bags or dealing with leaky bags. This is a presto zippo installation and you can play "immediately". 550307

Comments

I couldnt be more happier with this product. Truck is still remaining relatively level, even with the hot rod in the enclosed trailer. Hot rod weighs in at 2200 pounds and nary a between truck and trailer. As in my earlier review, I HIGHLY recommend this product over air bags...so much LESS hassle .

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer. 560925

After a 3000 mile trip with a 42' fifth wheel on a 2016 Chevrolet single rear wheel short bed 3500HD, I will say they made a difference. They took some of the bounce and the side to side rocking out of the truck. I would definitely put them on my next truck as well. 667565

I purchased a used pickup without any jounce bumpers. I ordered these to provide more support rather than going back with stock ones. I pull a 5th wheel and these keep the truck level with less bouncing around and bottoming out when towing. When I'm not towing they sit about an inch or inch and a half about the stops so they do not negatively impact the ride quality. They work as advertised and I'm pleased with them. 653123

Simple install. It takes longer to put the jack away then install the springs. It would take longer to make toast. The ride after is better than factory new. Great produt and as always great cust. service from etrailer. 350417

Hey guys, I'm 76 and I installed these in 30 minutes. Took longer to get the tools together and get under the truck than to remove old bumps tops and install new ones. Thanks etrailer 546853

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product was purchased based on mechanics recommendation for a friends F250 being used to tow a thirty foot gooseneck 3 horse trailer with living quarters. Post installation performance was all we hoped for. Service from etrailer, before and after the sale, is what every mail order company should strive to achieve. I will not hesitate to utilize etrailer in the future. They are flagged in my favorites. 324435

Not really happy. They do provide some additional support. However, they interfere significantly with the factory hydraulic self leveling suspension system called Automatic Height Control. Most definitely will not purchase again! 676582

got the product when stated , went on simple enough but used google to really see how things went together. Timbren doesn't give very good instructions with their product wish they would put diagram so as to be able to see how brackets go, but happy so far haven't put load on the truck yet that's coming up with a trip in august with my 30ft camper and truck loaded for trip guess will come back and let you know how the product works after the trip , but etrailer delivered when they said they would thanks will keep you in mind for future purchases. 544811

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Purchased for Lexus GX460. Solves rear sag problem when towing with medium to heavy trailers. I don’t notice any difference in the ride when not towing a trailer with the helper springs. Should really come standard with the vehicle I’m the first place in order to utilize the towing capacity. I would highly recommend this cheap fix. 468046

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I installed the front and rear Timbrens on my 2017 Georgetown GT5 class A. The installation was pretty easy, except for the tight areas getting the wrenches on the bolts. The front passenger side used the original bolt to install on my frame. Installation took about two hours to complete the front and back. It would be quicker if you use power tools, but I wasn't in any hurry. I've driven on two trips now with them, and they made a noticeable improvement on the rocking sideways back and forth. The motor home seems a lot more settled now with wind and traffic. 563687

Its been a year now owning the Timbrens on my RV. and they are holding up great and work great on stopping the rocking back and forth. I recommend them to anyone whos considering upgrading their suspension.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I have installed and used the Timbrens on my 2015 F350 dually with my 5th wheel Keystone Fusion RV for a year now. i have to say that the Timrens are not only easy to install but make the ride of my truck excellent not only on the highway but back roads as well that includes very twisty turns. Timbrens keep my truck level and i don't have to ever worry about airbag air pressure. i have owned airbags before and never again will i ever buy or use them. When you don't have a load in the bed or your RV hooked up the Timbrens ride above then axles.. Best investment for towing period! 264475

  • Recommended Timbren Suspension Enhancement For 2015 Ram 3500 Pickup
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, part # TDR3500CA is a confirmed fit for your 2015 Ram 3500. The system does come with a 1 inch spacer just in case you need additional length. I have attached a drawing that shows the clearance that you will want between your truck frame and the rear axle for the Timbren system. You will want approximately 6-3/4 inches or approximately 7-3/4 inches. After the Timbren springs are installed, you will want about a 1/2 inch gap between the...

  • Correct Timbren Suspension Enhancement for a 2019 Ram 3500
  • The correct Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System (SES) for your 2019 Ram 3500 pickup should be part # TDR3500CA because the other option, part # TDRTT3500D, is for Severe Service vehicles like tow trucks. This kit has an 8,600 lb capacity and doesn't require any drilling for the installation, but please note that it will not fit if you have the factory Air Suspension system. Another thing to remember is that this will not increase the weight capacity of your pickup as it is designed...

The only airbag system we have confirmed to fit your 2019 Ram 3500 DRW at this time is the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2579 for 4x2 or part # F2560 for 4x4. • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2011 Ram 3500 Towing Fifth Wheel
  • There are pros and cons to air bags over Timbrens. If you like the ability to tailor exactly how much suspension support you get and are okay with maintaining air pressure the Firestone kit part # F2701 is a fit for your truck and is compatible with the hitch you have. If instead you want a one time install and don't ever want to mess with the suspension the Timbren kit part # TDR3500CA would be what you need.

  • Availability of 5th Wheel Hitch to Tow 25,900 lb Car Hauler with a 2014 Ram 3500
  • If your loaded trailer weight is 25,900 lbs then you will want to use a gooseneck hitch rather than a 5th wheel hitch. The highest rated 5th wheel hitch that we have to offer is the Husky # HT31318-31325 rated for 26,000 lbs. You won't find too many 5th wheel hitches anywhere else that will be rated much higher than this. The 100 lb difference in the weight of the trailer and capacity of the 5th wheel hitch is too close to consider a safe margin. Gooseneck hitches are rated for at least...

The listed capacities are simply what the springs themselves can handle. If the payload capacity of your Ram is lower...

The Timbren kit part # TDR3500CA which is a custom fit for your truck gives you all the support you need without ever having to worry about air bag pressure or air leaks etc. Basically you install the kit once (easier than installing air bags) and then you never have to worry about them again which is really nice.

  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TDR3500CA referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2016 Ram 3500. When the springs are installed, there should be about a 1/2 inch to 1-1/2 inch gap between it and the contact point when the truck is empty. If you find that the spring is almost or is touching the axle, Timbren recommends that you simply remove the rubber spacer that was supplied. • Timbren Helper Spring Recommendations for a 2017 Ram 3500 4x4 Diesel Short Bed
  • I will be happy to help with some rear helper springs for your 2017 Ram 3500 4x4 diesel short bed. First, for your application (towing a 5th wheel trailer) I do recommend going with Timbren springs rather than air bags since Timbren springs do not require maintenance or for you to add/remove air from air bags. But air bags are superior in other ways including having the ability to level the bed side to side and adjust the ride quality to be more or less stiff. For Timbren springs that...

The TorkLift StableLoads will help some with leveling the load but were designed to help stabilize it from body roll and side to side sway when hauling a heavy payload. It is hard to choose one particular setup that is best for any towing situation because there are so many different truck and trailer combinations that you can choose from.
