An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the Jeep Liberty.

When hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear of the Jeep Liberty sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the vehicle's weight as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. The resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with the vehicle's factory suspension to keep the vehicle level and improve your driving performance.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a vehicle-specific bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape provides increased resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of the vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailer swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer helping to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or passing of a semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside quicker.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened as the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the competition:

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to maintain than air springs - no air hoses are needed to be run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments necessary. The rubber construction causes Timbren's springs to be more elastic than similar products constructed of micro-cellular urethane. More elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

2003 Jeep Liberty

First Trip with my new Rockwood Extreme Sport to San Diego went well although I had a lot of sag in the rear. Camper place said I did not need a weight distribution for my 03 Jeep Liberty so I got online and found the TJRL4. I ordered it and had my mechanic put them in. We had to call the help desk as they were slightly to big to pop in so he had us shave the top down a bit to fit. My last four trips with the TJRL4 on my Liberty have been outstanding, sag is not an issue and a much better ride. I think if you do not do a distribution hitch , this is much easier way to go. It raised my jeep up slightly also without the trailer on so that is a plus too. The main result was I feel very confident pulling my trailer with a Liberty which went from Arizona to Montana and back, up hills, down hills etc with no problems at all and I was in total control at all times. I credit this to the way the TJRL4 corrected the sag issue. Great Product. 410027

Best thing I ever bought for RVing. Before, just hitting a bump in the road would start my truck/camper combo rocking. Now, one rock then steady! My wife is no longer afraid we will careen off the road out of control. 452990

STILL GREAT! Been on 2 road trips totaling 35,000 miles, to include The Dalton Highway to the North Slope and Deadhorse and across the plains states at 90 MPH and they have worked beautifully. Best investment I have made for my truck. P.S. Have a truck camper so all the weight is on the truck, not just the tongue weight.

Rear suspension pads work great. Ride is still like factory with no load unless driving over a big bump at high speed. When towing a 32 foot travel trailer the sag in back end of truck is greatly reduced with a lot more control. Easy to install. The downside is when truck is full with passengers and not towing anything the added weight makes the ride rougher. Shipped on time. 575558

Great product and installs easily. I did not use the spacer, so this allows the stock suspension about 1-1/2" of travel before contacting the Timbren units. I tow a 16K fifth wheel and the Timbren's handle this load very well. You can see the compression marking on the lower side of the Timbren when the trailer is hooked up to the truck. Just enough contact to keep the truck at a level stance. My stock "bump stops" were starting to fall apart from age and wear/tear. These Timbrens now add an extra level of suspension that makes the truck feel much more in control when pulling the fifth wheel. 574936

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I have a 2013 Chrysler Town &Country that I load down with a roof and a rear rack storage. I was having issues with the rear sitting so low that I couldn't see the top of the rear tires and would occasionally bottom out. Now that these Timbrins have been installed I lose about 3/4 of an inch ride height compared to the 3+ inches I was losing before. It's still a little too early to determine if I'm completely satisfied, so I'll try to provide an update after traveling from Houston to Michigan and back during the holidays. The ride is definitely more firm(when loaded down with the extra storage), which is to be expected, but wouldn't call it jarring. The wife and kids will let me know soon enough. ;) One thing to note about the installation video linked by etrailer in regards to these Chrysler/Dodge minivans... I don't have access to a full vehicle lift, so I had to use a coil spring compressor to pull the coil springs, which is not a big deal because they can be rented(for free with some places) from your local auto parts store. But, they don't just pull out like the video suggests. Also, as others have recommended, disconnect the shock from the bottom, NOT the top. I'm not a mechanic, but not a complete novice. I experienced a few hiccups from following the etrailer video, but was able to work them out with the right tools and patience. 459059

One year update: We have taken two lengthy1000+ mile road trips in our 2013 Chrysler Town & Country with roof and rear rack storage and all we can say is the Timbren suspension upgrade is simply awesome. Our van no longer sags in the rear when loaded down and the suspension changes are practically unnoticed, especially when the van is not loaded at all. I highly recommend this suspension upgrade to anyone who plans on towing or loading up their Town & Country with extra weight.

This is an outstanding product when I have the trailer hooked up! Truck rides like a buckboard when I don’t. For the price and what it does when towing it’s an acceptable trade off to me. 575179

Product works great, 100% better when I’m towing. I have absolutely no complaints about the product. The only issue I had was the package was short 2 washers that the instructions called for. I didn’t contact the company, because I have Spare washers and it was a lot easier to use what I have versus contacting them. 574500

My 2015 F-350 dually would always squat when I’d hook up my fifth wheel. Towed it for the first time since purchase and install and the truck is nice and level. The ride is better also and after driving a bit without the camper I don’t really notice them. I love the simplicity of these over airbags and imagine they won’t be needing any maintenance or replacement anytime soon. Great simple solution. Not so easy for an old fat guy to install laying under the truck in the driveway but I managed! 442491

They work. It is nice towing nice and level now. The ride with the load on is good and smooth and very stable. I am still very happy I went them. Put them on and forget about them, no maintenance and no worries.

After one year the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System has performed as advertised. My 2016 F-250 does NOT squat with the fifth wheel trailer attached and the ride quality with trailer attached has also improved. Springs arrived quickly and took about 30-40 minutes to install. Excellent Product for towing!!! 449153

They have performed as described. When hooked to my gooseneck trailer truck squat is minimal, and best part is hassle free install and forget. I have been driving empty and unhooked without any notice to ride difference unless I hit a bad pothole. I would recommend them to anyone looking into option of airbags. 573990

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Was really worried how well these would work compared to a leveling kit for my truck. I have a 2017 Ram 2500 crew cab, 6.4. I put a western wide out on it to plow with and was really disappointed with the truck springs as I had almost 3" of squat. So I was in a toss up, leveling kit or these. I bought the timbren just to try cause I have never used them before, all I can say is I'm very happy with my purchase, now I only get about 1/4-1/2" of squat and the truck rides awesome with the plow on. With the plow off it is noticeably a bumpier ride but I wanted the front end stuffed for plowing and got exactly what I was looking for. Should also mention I had 900lbs ballast in the bed before the install, I only have 420lbs now. World of difference! 583814

These are an awesome suspension up grade. Great for beefing up a half ton. I installed front and rear timbrens on my 02 tundra and im carrying 2000 lbs. Level, no suspension sag and have had 2800 lbs on still handled ok with no droop. Down side is they ride really rough if you do alot of dirt road / off-road driving. I don't recommend those load weiights with 6 ply tires move up to 10 ply. 573504

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Took a while to figure out the best way to install and then went fairly easy, Dodge doesn't give you the most room after they put the truck all together. The reviews and results were about the same, Truck ride stiffer but more secure with trailers or empty on rough roads. I have a flatbed with hydraulic bale forks that I use with 1200>1500 hay bales, the flat bed empty weighs in around 1000# and now performs without any roll on uneven ground, when loaded. Good product and well designed and didn't change the stance of the truck. 447315

Comments

l think I would elect to try the inflatable air bags for use at different pressures to raise the bed to different angles for the loads that are different. Empty it is comfortable as the bed itself is heavier than most, that being said, at night I get complaints on the headlight position in the low beam even empty. Worth thinking about, any suggestions?

I think that the airbags would be a great idea for your 2015 Ram 2500, with your flatbed and bale loader configuration I recommend the # F2706
Firestone Ride-Rite Red Label Extreme Duty Air Helper Springs - Rear Axle
$524.55
. THis installs in the same location as the factory jounce springs, so you will have to remove your Timbrens to install the new airbag system. I have included a link to the part, instructions, and a video for your reference.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Just what the truck asked for... I’m a Farrier, I carry a full workshop in the bed of my truck 24/7. I drive a 2001 Toyota Tacoma 4x4. After a couple months I redid the entire front and rear suspension and added heavy duty rear leafs. After about a year of driving and also adding more tools the truck began to sag a little bit. Ofcourse, the first thing anyone suggested was “airbags” but they didn’t know the use of the truck or where the truck goes from day to day. Being a Farrier, I travel on everything from paved freeways to down and dirty “4lo” back roads. I needed a maintenance and care free system that would allow for over extension and hold the extra weight of my tools and sometimes even a trailer. I did a ton of research and even talked to the Technician Staff at each company. I ultimately decided to go with Timbren SES Kit. It’s easy to install, maintenance free, free floating, and has the best warranty in it’s category. Since I have a custom setup (Ubolt Flip Kit from AllProOffroad) I had to design and build some landing pads to allow for an “interference free” contact with my system. After the first day of working, I am COMPLETELY satisfied with its performance and how my truck feels and drives. As for ”Etrailer” I am very happy with all the information and excellent customer service. I received my parts 2 days before it’s orignal date which makes me super Happy! 570702

Took my 2007 Dodge Ram to a local shop to have Timbrens installed. I watched the sales man look up the price on his monitor. He then quoted me an installation charge of over $150, so I called etrailer and asked how hard they were to install myself. They walked me through installation and shipped the product to my door. Installation was so easy that I didn't even finish my second beer. Thanks etrailer for saving me over $150. 257222

Very impressed. Installation was a breeze. Prior to install, my Dakota sagged very noticeably from only a couple hundred pounds in the bed. Truck now sits perfectly level with several hundred in the bed and handles much better. They don't seem to affect the ride empty or with a light load, but with a big load bumps can be a bit harsh. I was planning to go with an air system before I found these. This was a great alternative. 493914

My Timbren kit arrived quickly and was exactly as described. The fit on my '06 Sierra was perfect. Took me about an hour to install the fronts and an hour for the rears. The timbrens levels out my truck and elminated poor handling I was experiencing with a heavy load in the bed of my truck. I'm carrying equipment weighing about 1200 lbs in the bed of my truck. I was down on the front bump stops and had less than 1" of clearance on the rear stops. The timbrens leveled the whole truck and easily handle the load. I'm much happier with the ride and handling of my truck. It no longer rolls side to side through the corners and tracks normally on the freeway; even in high cross winds. etrailer.com provided good customer service and I really apreciated the fast updates on the status of my order. 44684

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Exceptionally easy to install. Less than 5 minute per side! I sntalled these by simply turning hte steering all the way from side to side while the vehicle was on a floor jack and did not even have to remove the wheels. Nice firm ride with no sag when operating the slowplow. 171213

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

A year ago, I added Timbrens to my '09 F350 to help carry a '09 Lance 915 camper. Since my truck is a CC LB diesel model, the truck payload and loaded weight of my camper are similar. I found the Timbrens a cost effective way to limit the suspension sag and improve truck/camper sway. When unloaded, I rarely notice the Timbrens as they are ~1.5" away from the spring pack stop and only engage on large bumps. I also like the maintenance free aspect of Timbrens. To further enhance the loaded ride, I am replacing the thin factory contact pads on my overload springs with larger ones. I found that adding the Timbrens limited suspension travel such that it prevented adequate overload spring engagement with the factory pads. The replacement overload pads from Torklift and Supersprings are 3" (too much IMO as they contact the overload spring nearly all the time making for a rough ride). I am cutting down a set of Superstops to ~1.5 - 2" for the right amount of overload spring contact and Timbren engagement but still maintaining unloaded ride quality. 570372

Very easy to install. Works great. Didn’t seem to affect my ride. Levels up my rig when I put the camper on or hook up to a trailer or piece of equipment. Love it and would highly recommend it. 570299

Comments

Timbren suspension systems wont have a whole lot of effect on vehicle ride except during cornering or when the vehicle is under load. Once a load is applied to the suspension, either from cargo or from the tongue or pin weight of a trailer, the suspension will compress enough for the Timbren Aeon springs to contact the axle.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I installed these on my 2016 F250 4X4 and the installation process was quite simple. I did not experience any difficulty removing the factory bump stops that a few others had experienced. After the installation and with my 8500 lb. 5th wheel attached to the truck, I noticed a change in measured rear ride height of only 3/8 inch. My trailer is not a heavy 5th wheel and my truck already had the heaviest leaf springs Ford makes (upgraded camper package option), so this may be why I did not experience more of a ride height change over the 3/8". All this being said, I am still happy with the ride with the Timbrens. The small change in ride height was enough and I no longer receive oncoming traffic night time headlight flashes wanting me to dim my headlights. 445347

Comments

Only had the use of the Timbrens for 6 months as I traded the truck in for a new one. The Timbrens were great while I used them. The only regret is that the new truck wont accept the Timbrens I had on the previous truck New and different frame.

Work great with a little extra weight on the front end. Easy to install... out with the old in with the new. I have to say that e-trailer has the best customer service I have ever experienced buying on line. From the time I ordered they kept me updated on the status and that made the experiance worth it. 69026

Fast shipping and exactly what I wanted. Works great pulling a camper. Took the wiggle out of rear end on highway when changing lanes. Anyone with a camper should try these. Also helps when an 18 wheeler passes with the pull, to me anyway. Anyone with a camper of any size knows what I mean. 150670

Needs a little more slot in base plate. I could not line up to center of axle. With that said it works great and has taken out those harsh bumps. 33622

Installed on my 2012 Ford Transit Connect. Very easy to install with a minimum of tools. Product arrived quickly, and instructions were clear. Instructions called for soapy water and the push and twist on. That didn't work so well, instead I used wheel bearing grease in the spring and mount. This allowed a much easier installation. I am very happy with the results and service. 181093

Installed these on 7/6/2018. Install was pretty strait forward. Sure made a difference on the ride height. It is one of our service vehicles that we have, so we shall see if the driver of it notices the difference. 539447

Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • What can I do to Reduce Sag on my 2007 Jeep Liberty by Towing my Trailer
  • If your Jeep is sagging, an adjustable ball mount is probably not going to be the cure. The best thing would be to use a weight distribution system if you have a 2 inch hitch. I see that you have ordered the Curt Class III hitch, part # 13044, from us and I assume that is what you have on your 2007 Liberty. This hitch cannot be used with a weight distribution system. It has a 500 pound tongue weight and 5,000 pound gross towing weight capacities. Since Curt does not provide a weight...

  • How Do I Install Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancment System TJRL4 on a 2007 Jeep Liberty
  • There are no brackets needed for this kit. The rubber Aeon spring fits into the pre-existing bump stop cup. It is made to be a very tight fit. The factory bump-stop is there to cushion the blow of anny sudden or over-loaded suspension travel. As such it needs to be held firmly in place and not allowed any wiggle room. Twist the spring as you push it up to make sure it is firmly seated in the cup, and then bolt it into place.

  • Will Timbren Suspension Enhancement System Increase Towing Capacity For 2003 Jeep Liberty
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, part # TJRL4 you referenced is not designed to increase the tow weight capacity on your 2003 Jeep Liberty. There are many elements that determine the towing capacity of a given vehicle. The engine, transmission, suspension, and overall structural rigidity of the vehicle should be taken into account. The capacity is dictated by whatever the lowest rated component is. Increasing the load bearing capacity of the suspension (which the Timbrens...
