Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Installation - 2016 Ford F-150

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Ford F150, we're going to take a look at and show you how to install the Timbren rear suspension enhancement system, part number TFRTT1504E. Now the need for a suspension upgrade typically comes from hauling. You're going to have either something in the bed of the truck or a large trailer and it's causing sag in the back of the vehicle. We've got about 1,000 pounds worth of water here in the back of the truck. We measured this before adding the water and it was at about 40 inches. After adding the water, it's down to about 3 and 1/2 inches.

So what we're going to do is put the Timbrens on and we'll show how we can take the weight off of this rear suspension system and allow those to do a lot of the work for us.And when we've got out truck loaded down like this, we're causing the rear suspension to do a lot of work. That causes friction, heat, you know the system's going to heat up a little bit. And over time it's just going to fatigue. It's not going to work as well as it did before. By adding our suspension upgrade, we should be able to take a lot of that pressure off of that system, allowing our truck to drive and operate a lot like normal, even when we've got it loaded right up to it's safe load limit. Now we can see what a difference is made with that Timbren installed.

We've got the same load in the bed of the truck and we've reduced that amount of sag by about 50%. We've brought it up about two inches to kind of split the difference from unloaded to fully loaded like we've got it. Now what this does, is we talked about before. This really reduces all that strain that's going to be on that rear suspension. It helps to absorb it.

It's going to extend the life of our suspension, especially if we do a lot of towing. As a side effect to this, we've also brought the front end down a little bit. That puts more pressure on the front tires. We talked about returning to the factory characteristics earlier. And by adding the pressure back on those front tires, our steering is going to feel more like normal, our braking.

And also the suspension geometry is returned so we won't have to worry about abnormal tire wear. Now here's a look at what the Timbrens going to look like installed. As you can see, as compared to the original jounce bumper that gives you an idea of the size difference there. This was basically only used for extreme overload situations. So whenever this part of the axle, you'll see how that was contoured. Whenever that part of the axle got all the way up to about this point, that's when it started to make contact. So that was just an extreme situation. With our new Timbren, you can see we're going to have about an inch of a gap here, maybe an inch and a quarter. So as our suspension starts to sag, this is going to engage much more quickly and give us much more benefit. Now with our gap being so much smaller here, this allows for more engagement of that Timbren. Essentially that gives us a lot more load leveling capability. Where this was basically just when it was extremely overloaded. This is going to take pressure almost the whole time when we're towing. Now as we're traveling down the road under normal circumstances, a lot times they're not even going to engage. That little bit of a gap still allows for a nice comfortable ride. Then once we get that load on, that's when the y start doing the job.Now overall, the installation process is really straightforward. We've got our custom bracket here on the upper portion. Just a single a bolt into an already existing weld nut, where you remove your old jounce bumper. This is going to go right back in place. Then to give us a great flat spot rather than our Timbren coming down on the rounded top of the axle. We've got a nice flat perch that we're going to be able to put in there. It's going to allow it to really work very effectively. Now your upper and lower bracket, they're heavy duty steel. They've got the black powder coat finish on them. And we've got Aeon rubber springs. These are hollow. So they're designed to have a minimal impact initially. But as we compress these more and more, they become stiffer and stiffer. So as our loads go up, the stiffness of our spring is also going to go up.Now these springs have a 7,000 pound capacity each. That gives us a total of 14,000 pounds in load handling capability. One thing you really need to keep in mind though, this doesn't raise the capability or the weight rating of your truck. You need to abide by that. This is just going to allow us not to put so much of a load on the rear suspension and also return a lot of the handling characteristics that we would have typically had from the factory. Here's a look at our truck going through out test course with the load in the bed but with no suspension enhancement. As you can see, we've got a lot of movement up and down in this suspension here. Not only does this affect the up and down in the truck but also the body roll is affected as we go through our wider corners. Now as we go through our bumps without our Timbrens, you can see what force is generated up and down and all the strain that's being put on the suspension. After the Timbrens, with our load in, you can see they're already engaged. They're making contact and helping to support the rear of our truck. We're not going to have near the body roll going to side to side that we did before, because these are designed to work independently from one another. Here's a good look at our Timbrens installed, but with no load in the back of the truck. As you can see, they're not really going to engage at all under normal driving situations. They do make contact here and there just to help smooth out our ride. Now to begin your installation, you want to have your rear suspension hanging slightly. So you'll need to support it with some jack stands. We've gone off our our hitch here and then just allowed our wheels to come down a little bit. What you're looking for is just to get some space between your axle and your bump stop here, so you can work.On the passenger side, we're going to pull down the heat shield here for the spare tire. The spare tire's typically here. We've already taken that down. It'll allow you to see better, but also it kind of gives you more room. So it might be a good idea. Got three bolts, we've got one here, 13 millimeter head on it. And then there are two right above this rail.Once you've got the three of those out, going to rotate it down and out of the way. Now we'll be taking the jounce bumpers out of the way. Up inside here, we've got a 13 millimeter bolt. You're going to need a little bit of an extension. Get in there and we'll get it removed. Then we'll repeat the same process on our passenger side. Now for the driver's side, we're going to move the upper bracket that's marked left. We want to grab the shorter bolt, you're going to put a lock washer on there. It's going to go right up through like that. We're going to secure it right in the hole the jounce stop came out of. These two tabs will be on the inside edge of the frame. To tighten that down, you'll need a 16 millimeter wrench. Now we can repeat that same process over on the passenger side. Now we can assemble our spring and spacer block to our bracket. We're going to use the longer bolt, use the fender washer. It's usually easier just to guide the bolt up through one at a time, that out. Spacer on and then that threads right into that weld nut. Now we're going to use a 17 millimeter socket and we'll get this snugged down. Once we have this one snugged down, we'll do the same thing on our passenger side. Now we can take our Timbren stop. This is going to be mounted right above our axle. You'll see the tab, it kind of narrows down here. That's going to fit right in between the two U bolts in the spring. Just want to bring that around the axle. It's important that we stay behind the brake lines and their sensor wire there. Make sure we're clear and everything, so we can add the lower part of our clamp. Want it just like that. And on each side we're going to be putting on a flat washer and also a nylon lock nut.Now we can get this hardware snugged up. Want to tighten these down evenly. We use a 9/16 socket. Once we've got them snugged, we'll torque down to the specifications listed in our instructions. Now once we've got everything torqued down properly, we're ready to put our heat shield back in place and our spare tire, if you decided to remove them. And that'll complete our installation of the Timbren rear axle suspension enhancement, part number TFRTT1504E on our 2016 Ford F150.

Installation was easy- did not require raising the truck as with correct socket extensions it’s doable. Would be nice if components had better paint adhesion. Also the u-bolts/brackets did not have any paint at all!! 572267

2017 Ford F-150

This is the second time I purchase and install these, the first was for my 2013 F150 and now on my 2017 F150. I towed my 9600lb bumper pull RV with the new 2017 truck before i ordered this second set, just to see if i noticed the difference. I loved the last set but heck, life is about experiences right? Those of you who have these are laughing right now as you know what I'm going to say. HUGE difference, noticed the absence right away. Got home from that camping trip, straight on my computer to order this latest set. As far as I'm concerned this is the best $200 bucks you'll spend. You have extra cushion when it matters most and it doesn't affect your ride at all when you don't. They are very easily to install and you don't have all the extra equipment etc as with an airbag system. I'm not the kind of guy who works on his truck, I don't consider myself mechanical at all yet i didn't have any problems with the installation. The only "issue" i had was when attaching the stop bumper to the metal mount. The screw is just long enough so i could get the tension i needed to get it threaded (the head of the bolt would drop slightly within the socket). I was able to get it threaded by using my index finger to hold the bolt and my ring finger to turn it, just enough to get it started. After that I was fine. As i mentioned, I'm not mechanical so my tool options were limited. Just bring some patience with you and you'll be fine. The instructions are good. As long as I'll be towing a camper, I'll have a set of these on every truck I own. 400940

I owned these for about a year and just recently switched to air bags instead. While the Timbren spring helped level the truck under load, there were other things that I was not satisfied with. One issue was the amount of distance the truck would drop until the Timbren would engage, I would have like to see them take affect sooner. I did not like the ride while empty. When hitting a decent size bump in the road the spring would slam into the stop causing for a very jolting ride. Also while under load and the Timbren was engaged, it made the truck extremely bouncy. Again it did stop the truck from further squatting under heavy load, but the other factors were what made me switch out for air bags, to which I have been very happy with. 565705

Simple install and works very well on my 2015 F150 4x4. The truck feels way more solid while towing and you don't notice the Timbrens while the truck is unloaded unless on a really bumpy road. Overall great product for the price! 538585

Functionally these Timbren Rubber Springs provide additional load capacity and reduce tipping while turning around corners on my F-150 as claimed; however, the set I purchased was overly stiff (I was only hauling 500 additional pounds). Timbren provided a replacement set with lower capacity which helped tremendously; however, it still rides slightly stiff. I wish Timbren or a competitor would provide these rubber springs in different durometers that provide 1000 lb increments to fine tune the suspension - reducing the over stiffness performance. 655944

I was surprised at how easy the OEM ones were to remove and how incredibly east the new ones were to install. I read the reviews and saw that there was more of a jolt when hitting potholes and rough roads. I believe the clearance between the plate and the buffer is about an inch. I have a 32 foot trailer I haul that holds a sub compact tractor, a mini hay baler, mower, rake and hay spears. I was concerned that the weight would damage the springs. So knowing the rougher ride when on bumpy roads, I felt it was the best option that was in my price range! That you so much!!!!! 628212

I have a Ford 150 2015 with trailer package . I put the over loads on because I pull a 20 ft enclosed and a 20 ft open trailers wit Mustangs on . With the enclosed I found that there was a little sag in the rear of the pickup on long travels . Putting the overloads on were a 1 hour job didn't take any thing off the truck just jacked it up and put every thing on . Then found out it rode a little to ruff with out a trailer so I removed the small rubber donut and it rode great . 500030

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case. Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift. 511931

I ordered timbrens for the front and rear of my chevy 2500. I have a 2000 lb truck camper and I wanted something to help carry the load a little better. I had no idea that my front bump stops had worn away to almost nothing until I installed these. They have worn well and performed well so far. 628835

Installed on my 2007 Ram 3500 because I wanted basic leveling & stability under the load of my 5th wheel. I didn't want a complicated air bag system. Summer trips in the mountains of MT & the Pacific NW. 3 months of snowbirding throughout southern AZ this winter. Very satisfied, so I just swapped them onto my new 2018 Ram 3500. I didn't let them go with my trade-in. Just what I need, no effect when empty - engaged when I need them. 628560

The Timbren suspension was delivered on time . The unit was installed using the instructions provided and took about 45 minutes for both sides of the rear axle. I have not put a load on the truck yet to see how it works. There is about 1" of clearance between the rubber timbren stops and the frame of the truck,so it hasn't affected the way the truck handles for now,I'll be able to tell more about it once I hitch my Travel Trailer up.The installation was done on a 2017 Nissan Frontier. 621664

These do really well for supporting a full load or trailer attached. But if unloaded the will create whiplash if you go over a speed bump or anything that creates the axle to spring up and hit them. 611025

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I bought Timbrens to install on my 2015 Silverado 2500HD truck, which I use to haul our 5th wheel. I had a set of airbags on my old GMC and they worked well, however, they were a concern when it came to maintenance. I saw a review and recommendation for Timbrens and thought they were a great alternative to having airbags installed. I read the instructions and can see no problems with installing them myself - thereby not only saving in the cost over the airbags, but also not having to pay anyone to install the Timbrens. Everything I have read about them makes me feel very good. I don't see the truck lowering with the 5th wheel attached, but having the Timbrens installed will take away any worries with rough roads. 613453

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I finally had a chance to try these out and they work great. Granted, I do have what they market an ultra-light travel trailer, but for my configuration of my 2007 Dodge Durango (4.7L), this trailer totals out about 75% of my towing capacity. That being said, this vehicle has an abnormally smooth ride for it's size. Because of this, the weight at the hitch creates a slight sag in the rear when weighted over 400 lbs. It also created some suspension characteristics I didn't like, like the slow bounce over undulations. I was advised my shocks were in perfect condition and utilizing stiffer shocks would not prevent the sag and would make the overall ride too tight for me. This was the reason for looking into this option. Installation was as simple as it gets (pull off the old and put on the new). The only tools (if you want to call it that) are possibly a couple of 2x4 blocks (of course you're going to need a jack to jack up your vehicle). 4 inches total was needed to properly seat them. It took a total of 30 minutes, but 20 minutes was me pulling out my jack and jack stands, finding blocks, and taking my sweet time. My Durango rode as level as expected after installation. Photos would not show anything noticeable without actually measuring it (about 450 lbs on the tongue with my particular trailer - see photos). I also didn't have to adjust my mirrors, which was inherent in the slight sag I had before. It took bumps well and the ride was not as bouncy as before, more firm and controlled. The ride without the trailer is noticeably firmer, and with little bumps you can tell they're making contact. Mostly noticeable over speed bumps where my Durango would normally float over them due to the long travel. My Durango inherently didn't ride like a truck or large SUV, more like a sedan. Now, it "sorta" rides more like a truck. Not a deal breaker, but if you like your truck to keep riding smooth, these might not be for you. Pros: Works as advertised. Easy installation. Keeps your vehicle level. Firmer more controlled ride. Removed annoying bounces. Great quality build. Cons: With the clearance from your axel to your bump stop now ~1.5 inches, bumps will be felt if making contact (-1 star for me, but if this is not an issue for your application, you should add the star back). Overall, I would highly recommend this product, even for a smaller SUV like my Dodge Durango. That being said, it won't have the same smooth ride with the long travel as before, but definitely worth it if you're towing with the same type of vehicle. 489147

After a year of use, the product continues to perform as expected. I have specifically put about 6-8 trips with this product and I have not had any issues. This included many miles on the highways and some trail driving. The product continues to perform well, assisting on absorbing undulations and helps keep the vehicle stable and level. I did not mention this before, but its important to know that this product is only a supplement to an already stable suspension and correctly-weighted setup. If properly used, this product will enhance your driving experience, but it will not fix any overweight or setup issues. I still highly recommend this product.

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

This product seems as described in etrailer catalog and by salesperson. Very easy to install, both sides and clean up 30 minutes (actual install time was about 15-20 minutes). My truck has 100 gal fuel cell and tool box that is pretty full, so I generally have an extra 1200 lbs in bed of truck full time. Looking at truck it sits level instead of rear sitting up a little, not a big deal except headlights aim a little higher and when pulling trailer with skid steer or mini, truck sags an amount that looks overloaded. After installed truck bed height looks close to an unloaded truck. With full fuel cell the truck rests on the Timbren Suspension Enhancement System, I was pleasantly pleased with the ride and look of the truck. The only minor difference is when truck comes to complete stop, there is a slight "jiggle" in truck. Very minor but it is noticeable. I would definitely recommend and purchase again. I can't wait to see how system performs with loaded trailer hooked up. 594996

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product was easy to install, 1/2 hr taking my time. Used a open end wrench and floor jack. My 2018 F350 Super Duty Super Cab 4wd no longer plunges over bumps, it has lost all its rear end sway on turning, carries my load much smoother ( loaded all the time ). Even with the load I always carry, the vehicle sits 1” higher in the rear. Prior to the install I was constantly hitting the rubber stops on my factory overload springs. 520123

Excellent! I have since purchased another set from you for a 2019 F350 diesel. These things are just the ticket! The ride and handling is so much better!

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

The installation took about a half hour on our 2006 Winnebago View. I did not need to remove the tires, just jacked it up enough to unload the suspension a bit. The upgrades have quieted down the front suspension both reducing hard suspension hits and body lean. The front of the View is definitely more settled. Pros: Simplicity, and ease of install. measurable difference in RV suspension performance. Cons: expensive for what they are. The long bolts used do not inspire confidence. 220089

Ordered these from Etrailer.com and got them in three days. Super easy to install on Ram 3500. Didn't have to jack up truck. Assembled is 6.5" on Ram 3500, I had 7" to play with so plenty of room. Haven't added a load yet as 5th wheel is on order. Looking forward to it. 609612

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

These "enhanced" bump-stops have definitely improved the ride quality of my 2013 Ram 1500 quad cab when pulling our 7500 lb. 29 foot travel trailer. The trailer probably has 500+ pounds of food, clothes, kids toys, etc inside as well. The truck bed probably has another 800'ish pounds of equipment in it that compresses the suspension before I even hook the trailer up. With the stock stops the rear suspension hardly moved. After adding the new stops, the rear suspension had travel again and the steering felt less twitchy. Unloaded truck will hit the new stops only if I hit a pretty harsh bump but it's only noticeable if you're paying attention to it. With a loaded bed (no trailer) hitting the stops is more noticeable but you still need to hit a decent bump for them to touch. They are very easy to install. Take the time to read the instructions and watch the installation video before you pay someone $50-$75 for a 15-20 minute job. I would buy them again. 482362

Doesn't get any easier for an install. A jack, some soapy water and a couple pieces of 2x4. In about 5 minutes you're done. Took out almost all sag when I dropped my travel trailer on the ball. Great addition to the suspension. 488109

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Product seems to be high quality and the delivery was fairly quick. Extremely easy for me and my 12 year old son to complete in less than a half hour. Just put them on today so won't know how well they'll work until I put a load on the truck. I had the Timbren's on my 1997 Ford F-250 and they worked great so I'm hoping for the same results. 391227

  • Rear Suspension Enhancement Recommendations For A 2016 Ford F-150 XLT
  • You have several options to choose from in order to enhance the rear suspension of your 2016 Ford F-150 XLT while towing. Each of which has their own individual pro's and con's The best way to combat vehicle sag when towing a trailer is a weight distribution system because it will distribute the weight on the rear axle across the entire vehicle and trailer. Choosing the right system is very important. You will first start off by measuring the total tongue weight of your ready to tow...

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for 2016 Ford F-150 Crew Cab 4x4
  • The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System # TFRTT1504E is a confirmed fit for your truck. With a 1,100 lb tongue weight trailer, this system will help to keep the rear end from squat and your headlights from being too high to see the road as intended. These will act as a shock absorber as well as helping to stabilize your truck when under load. These spring are made for severe service vehicles like tow trucks so I don't recommend then for your truck as they can actually cause your truck...

  • Timbren Suspension Kit Recommendation for 2016 Ford F-150 4x4
  • Both of the kits you mentioned are a fit for your 2016 Ford F-150. The difference is that the part # TFR1504E has a 6,000 lb capacity and the part # TFRTT1504E has a 7,000 lb capacity. You would want to go with the lower rated spring as it will be a smoother ride quality. The higher capacity will be harsher. A 13 mm socket will be used to remove the bolt that holds your current bump stop in place. You basically will then need to use the attached diagram to assemble all of the Timbren...

  • Things To Consider When Changing from a 3/4 Ton to 1/2 Ton Tow Vehicle
  • There are a few things you need to consider when switching from a 3/4 ton like your 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 to a 1/2 ton like a 2018 Ford F-150. For starters, the 3/4 ton is going to have a stiffer suspension than the 1/2 ton. This means that although the 3/4 ton did not squat while towing your trailer, that's not to say that the 1/2 won't even though it may still have a higher towing capacity. Also, the 3/4 ton will be more geared towards towing while means it likely has upgraded...
