Rear Suspension Support

SumoSprings helper springs are great for RVs or motor homes. Heavy rear loads can cause sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the motor home's weight. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome's factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

SumoSprings diagram of installation above existing Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome spring

Each spring in this kit is bolted to two mounting brackets. One bracket is attached to the frame of your vehicle, and the other bracket is attached to the axle, typically above your existing factory leaf spring. Because each helper spring is in full contact at the top and bottom of the suspension's travel, the expanding and contracting action of the SumoSprings enhances your ride under all conditions, not just when it's loaded. And the closed-cell urethane springs act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

SumoSprings compressing under load

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

SumoSprings expanding to allow play in the suspension

These springs extend in height by as much as 50 percent to allow more movement in your suspension when you're traveling unloaded, making your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings expand and compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

This kit comes with custom-fit brackets that are designed to easily bolt onto your Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome.

Video Transcript for SumoSprings Maxim Rear Axle Helper Springs Installation - 2018 Fleetwood Bounder Motorhome

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 Fleetwood Bounder motor home with the F53 chassis, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the SumoSprings Maxim Custom Helper springs for the rear axle, part number SSR-187-54-1.This is what our spring look like when they're installed. You're not going to replace any part of your suspension. These are actually going to be added to your suspension to give it more support. What our springs are going to do for us, they're going to help reduce body roll and sway. How they do that is by minimizing lateral expansion. What they do is they work independently, but they work together.

How they work together is when your body rolls one way, the spring compresses. When this spring compresses, it's going to want to expand as the other one is stretched, and it's going to want to pull. So as one's pushing, the other one's pulling to keep your body upright. Each one of our springs is going to have a 5,400 pound weight capacity. They're going to work independently for off-centered loads. The good thing about these is they're similar to air nags except you don't have to worry about monitoring your air, running air lines tubes or anything else.

You put them in, they're maintenance free, you don't have to do anything else. The springs are going to be constructed of a micro cellular urethane that's going to resist damage caused by oils, road salts and uv rays. The springs are going to be connected to your frame and to your suspension. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let me show you how to get these installed.First thing we need to do to start our installation, we're going to use a jack stand to support our axle. We need to get our back end up in the air and take our rear wheels off. The next thing we need to do is we need to put together our springs.

The top of our spring is going to look like this. This is going to be our top bracket. You'll notice there's four holes. These two holes are only going to fit in two of them. We'll go ahead and line our holes up.

You're going to have three bolts in your kit that look like this. Two of them are going to go on the top bracket and one is going to go on the bottom bracket. We'll then put that in place. Take a 9/16 socket and we'll tighten it down. Our lower bracket there's only one hole in the bottom of our spring. We're going to loosely install this one right now.The next thing we need to do, you'll notice there's a little hook right here. On your driver's side, this little hook is going to go on the inside of our spring assembly On the passenger's side that hook will be on the outside. What we're going to do, is we're going to set it. You can see our two u-bolts. This bracket is going to sit right here. And that hook is going to hook around the back side of this u-bolt. So it's going to sit just like this. Once we figure out where our bracket is going to sit, we're going to slowly pull this off and we're going to tighten this lower bracket down. Go ahead and put it back in place once you get it tightened down. You'll notice your lower bracket's got this kind of a u shape or cut out here. That's going to fit over top of your spring here. So we'll set it down like that and make sure that these are sitting flush. They're not up against anything.Next thing I'm going to do is what I need to do is by this lower hole in the bracket, I need to make sure it's six inches from the top for our frame rail. We need to do that on both sides. You'll notice how our spring kind of slants down. That's because we have our vehicle up in the air. Just make sure you got it as even as possible on both sides. We're going to go about to the center of the hole. I'll take just a paint marker, if you have yellow marker, anything that will mark that spot. Now I'm going to measure the other side and make sure I got six inches before I do any drilling. So it looks like we're pretty good. I'm going to use those as my marks to drill holes. What we're going to have to do is we're going to have to drill our lower holes first. We're going to put our hardware in, and then we're going to drill the top two holes on each side. My hole is going to be drilled to a 3/8. What I'm going to do is I'm going to use this to make my mark. Take a smaller drill bit to drill a pilot hole. One thing I forgot to mention, before you start drilling, just make sure you reach up back there and check for any wiring, anything like that that may be back there in the way. Once you have one of your lower holes drilled, you're going to have eight bolts in your kit that look like this and you're going to have some nuts that look like this. We're going to take one of them, go ahead and insert it into that bottom hole. We'll go ahead and loosely put the nut in on the back side. We'll go ahead and take another measurement for this side and make sure our spot is still the same. If we have to remark it we'll remark it and then we'll drill that hole. The next thing we're gonna do, we have this loosely installed, we have our bolts, each bolt down on the bottom, we're going to have a bracket like this and you're going to have two long bolts. This is going to go like this on the bottom of your spring back. Your two long bolts, you're going to have a square hole in this lower bracket on your spring. You may have to tap on these a little bit to get them right past this edge, but we're going to take our bracket again. You want that u shape right here. This flat part's going to hit the bottom of the spring assembly. We'll just pass our bolts through the two holes, one threaded nut on each side. Next we'll take our 9/16 socket and we're going to tighten our two long bolts first. We want to make sure we tighten them evenly. As you can see, you are going to need an extension here. Another thing I didn't mention is you are going to need a long socket, too. Don't use a short one because it won't reach.Once we have our lower bracket tightened, we're going to take a 9/16 socket wrench, we're going to go ahead and tighten the bolts in our lower holes in our top bracket. Once we have those tightened down, we're going to repeat the process for drilling our holes. We're going to do it on the top holes on each side. Once you get one side installed, you're going to repeat the process on the other side. That will do it for a look at and installation on the SumoSprings Maximum Custom Helper springs for the rear axle, part number SSR-187-54-1 on our 2018 Fleetwood bounder motor home on our F53 chassis.

Installed front sumosprings myself and they made a great improvement in sway from passing trucks. Just received my rear sumosprings and can'r wait to get them installed before our next trip. Thank you etrailer, for having a great price and answering my calls, to discuss all my question before and after I purchased my products. 595308

Already had front sumos and my thought on them is lukewarm. I installed the rears and test drove it yesterday. Wow, what a difference when turning corners and entering/exiting driveways with a lip on them. No more rolling from side to side. My wife rode along on the test drive and also felt the difference almost immediately. It just feels stable. I highly recommend this product. Did the install myself in about 2 hours without pulling the wheels, just make sure you have a good right angle drill for the bottom rear holes. 547447

The sumo springs installed by your techs like night and day traveling home after install had vicious cross wind and had know issues keeping it straight with little effort and cornering improvement is measurable. was a needed upgrade as the unit was brand new and very unstable.

2011 Ford F-53

I purchased a 2011 Georgetown motorhome in 2011 which uses a Ford F-53 chassis. I wish I knew better at that time. I realized that driving it was stressful and dangerous due to the body roll and micro lunges when driving rough road or windy day or curvy roads. We limited our trips to around 200 miles due to this. I had to do something. First, the rear sway bar I bolted the connecting links to the inside bolt holes and replaced the shocks. It drove much better but still some body roll and micro lunges. So I decided to take the next step. I purchased Sumosprings for the rear and front axles. They were exceedingly easy to install, worst part was drilling the frame for the rear axle. I have now been on a trip on mountain roads for two weeks. The micro lunges seem to be gone, almost like driving a car. The body roll isn't an issue anymore, I can drive the mountain curves without feeling like being thrown over a cliff. There may be other ways to fix this Ford F-53 problem, but the Sumosprings do the job. 542019

I had the both the front and rear sumo Springs installed on my 2016 Newmar Canyon Star, by the crew at Etrailer. The improvement in the handling was noticeable the minute I hit the road. The most noticeable effect was the reduction in the top heavy sway when cornering. It also seems to have reduced the effect of passing semi's . I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who has a Ford F53 chassis on their motorhome. 661101

Our 28 foot Ford chassis Class A handles like flying a kite with no string. It needed help. I started with the Sumo springs because the description made it sound like I could do them myself. Yep. Job accomplished. Then, I purchased a front sway bar, which did not come with my motorhome. Got ready for the job and discovered Sumo springs are incompatible with mounting a front sway bar. Had I known… By the way, we are still flying our kite and having a ball. 15 states and 16,000 happy miles. But it could be better. 649728

I really appreciate the difference the springs have made in the handling of my motor home. Before them I worried about bottoming out and loosing control getting on and off bridges and overpasses. Now my trips are more relaxed. Having the right parts delivered the first time also was really appreciated. Thanks again.

Purchased these SumoSpings from etrailer.com who where fantastic, helpful, and friendly throughout this transaction. Can't say enough about how they did everything they could to ensure the purchase and shipping of the product took place in a timely manner. The SumoSprings themselves are great, truly smooths out the ride, increases the stability, and reduces the amount of road jarring that takes place with our 2016 Jayco Precept. The installation is easy enough that most anyone can do it. Although they do leave out a couple of important things to note/steps to take, but most anyone with a little common sense can figure it out. Well worth the investment. 527317

I purchased the SumoSprings Maxim rear axle helper springs for my 2016 F-53 Ford Chassis Georgetown 270S last year. They arrived quickly and were relatively easy to install. We drive in the mountains and regularly contend with cross-winds and some uneven road surfaces. we have put on a couple thousand miles since I installed these and the improvement is noticeable. These helper springs really smoothed out the ride, made the RV much more stable on the road with no harshness in ride comfort. These springs are worth getting if you are trying to avoid that side to side rocking and soft feel of the stock springs. I plan to install a set on the front soon to further add to the stability in windy conditions. These springs are a worthwhile investment and not that pricey compared to other options. 492088

Item installed easily. Ideally I would have removed the tires but with some effort this item installed without the removal. Springs definitely tighten up the vehicle rear end. Big Improvement! Installed Sumosprings on Rear Thor ACE 29.4 F53, after installing Sumosprings on front and steering stabilizer shock. The rear SumoSprings greatly eliminated sway from back of MH, and seemed to firm up the ride and a reduce bounce. The improvement was very noticeable but incremental compared to the modification to front of coach. Was a VERY good investment, but suggest start with front Sumosprings, With all 3 modifications I can drive down the road with two fingers (not recommended) on steering wheel, no fear from wind/trucks, and pleasurable ride! NOTE: Bolts were too long (5" needed 4" otherwise interfered with break line), etrailer probably would have quickly replaced but in hurry and purchased myself ($2). 561329

Installation of the rear SumoSprings Maxim Custom Helper Springs was accomplished without any problems. All necessary parts to install the springs were supplied in the kit. The SumoSprings have made a great difference in the ride and stability of our 2015 Thor ACE. The ACE ride and sway has improved to the point it is like driving a new RV. The side winds that push on the rear do not make the front want to move toward the center line or road side. I don't feel like I'm in a constant battle to stay in my lane which will vastly improve my driving pleasure. Passing 18 wheeler trucks didn't make our rig move away like before. I feel much safer with this more stable drive. The RV also doesn't seem to have the top heavy sway as we corner we actually have a much safer and smooth transition. Our test drive home from the shop was about 22 miles, with 5 miles on 4 lane and 18 miles on a narrow two lane back road. I feel this gave me the chance to evaluate the improved performance gained by installing the SumoSprings. I know our next trip will be a much safer and pleasant drive Thanks to the SumoSprings. 611841

Firstly great many thanks to etrailer for advice and and product information. You helped buy the perfect fit for our Fleetwood Tioga ranger. When it came to fitting the sumo springs your video and instructions made it so much easier. It took around 2.5 hours to fit and we didn’t even have to take the wheels off. The difference before and after fitting the sumo springs is definitely noticeable. There is less sway, less sag and overall a better ride. I am glad we went with more heavy duty version that you recommended. Our class C Rv is quite heavy and this kit suits it very well. We would recommend this to anyone who has a ford E450 super duty chassis for their rv 683535

I read a lot about the sway u get from a Rv and how people buy everything under the sun to fix it. I decided to purchase the sumo springs first before any sway bars shocks or any other product people had purchase. They cured all of the problems I was having with the pushing from a semi passing and the wind. I went from a death grip on the steering wheel to a more relaxing ride. I live in the Columbia gorge and we get some heavy winds. So glad I bought them I would recommend these to anyone who would like a more stable ride and and a relaxing drive. 681788

I did a fair amount of research on how to make my Winnebago Sunstar motorhome handle better. Cheap handling fix was one action I took. But still the motorhome had lots of rebound when traveling over bumpy roads. I decided to install Sumo springs front and rear. I installed them myself with instructions and videos from the manufacturer and etrailer.com. A trip to the coast (about 100 miles) had me smiling from ear to ear! They worked as advertised and made the drive a lot more enjoyable. I highly recommend Sumo springs and etrailer.com! 666315

2019 Thor Outlaw 29J I've only driven this RV for about 1800 miles. I don't know if I could rate these any higher. I ordered both the front and rear Sumosprings and the fronts arrived earlier than the rear, so I went ahead and installed them and went for a 100 mile test drive. Night and day difference, no more harsh ride in the front, and a lot less pogoing. Now I can't wait until the rears come in and I can test those. 539764

I put the sumo springs on a 2011 Thor Serrano. The springs dramatically reduced the harshness of the bumps and helped with the swaying (cut swaying by 50% or more). They were easy to install and made it ride much smoother. Their better than I was expecting. I’d do it again. 503005

  • Correct SumoSprings for 2017 Mirada on Ford F-53 Chassis
  • You did have the rear SumoSprings correctly figured, # SSR-187-54-1, though because your vehicle has a GVWR of 22,000 lbs the correct SumoSprings for the front axle would be # SSF-170-40-2. The springs you referred to are the same but are for vehicles with a higher GVWR. I've added a link to a video review and install of the stabilizer for you to take a look at.

  • The SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs - 2 Piece - Front Axle # SSF-173-40-2 will support the load and compress together on your motorhome all the time when there is weight. The split design is a benefit for the individual springs when the suspension travel is greater than what a single non-split design could handle. In other words, when one wheel travels lower on a turn, the spring will not take weight off the wheel so it has more weight in contact with the road for better traction....
