Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

Video Transcript for Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs Installation - 2016 Ram 3500

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Ram 3500 you're going to be taking a look at, and I'm going to show you how to install the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, part number F2560.This is what our bags look like when they're installed. These are very, very simple to install. You can do it in your driveway with your truck on the ground. The kit's going to come with your airbags, one for each side, your top and bottom bracket, your hardware to mount your bags to your brackets, and then the hardware to mount your brackets to your frame, or to your axle on the bottom and your frame on the top. It's also going to come with your hardware to run your air lines back to the back of your vehicle. Here in the back of the vehicle, we're going to have our air fittings, so we can manually air up our bags. Our bags are going to be double convoluted.

What that means is there's a steel band that runs in between, and unlike some of the single bags, where the bags tend to overlap when there's air taken out of them, when the air is deflated, these bags stay one on top of the other. They're not going to overlap. They're not going to pinch the rubber, anything like that. These bags are going to hold 5 psi, up to 100 psi. They're either going to mount between your frame and your axle.

These are going to give your vehicle extra support when you're hauling, so you don't overload your springs, or overload your rear axle. Another nice thing about air bags is it's going to reduce body roll and sway, not only increase the air, but you can also decrease the air to maximize the comfort of your ride. When we add weight, it's going to drop the back of our vehicle. When it drops the back of the vehicle, it tends to raise the front, and what that does, it puts a lot of strain on your rear axle, rear suspension. It's going to wear your tires uneven, so it will make braking a lot different, and then it's going to also raise your headlights. When it raises your headlights, that means they're not aiming out toward the road like they should be.The first thing we need to do to start our installation is we need to take a few measurements to find out what our factory right height is.

Once we install the air bags, we want to be able to bring the vehicle back up to that factory ride height while we have it loaded, so let's go ahead and take a measurement. Where we're going to measure is from the ground, up the center of the wheel, to the very bottom edge here. Here in the back, we're at 41 1/2. Front, we're at about 39 1/3. Now we've added about 1,000 to 1,200 pounds to the back of the truck.

Let's go ahead and see how much it's pushed the back down. You remember, we we're at 41 1/2 with our factory ride height. We've actually lowered the back of the truck about an inch and a half. At the front, it looks like we're the same as we were, so that's good. Now with our bags installed, I've got about 35 pounds of pressure in them, 35 psi per bag, let's go ahead and take another measurement and see where we're at. Again, the center of the wheel to this bottom edge, and we are at 41 1/2. Our measurement in the front is 39 1/2, so we're still the same as we we're at the beginning. Now we're going to take a 16 millimeter socket, we're going to remove our factory jounce stop. We're going to remove one bolt here, and you're going to have one on the back side. Then you're going to repeat that same thing on the passenger side. Now we've gone ahead and removed the spare tire to make it a little bit easier to work, and a little bit easier for you to see what we're doing. You're going to grab one of your bags, it doesn't matter which, there's no right or left, and then you're going to have two brackets like this. Again, either one, it doesn't matter. They're both the same, but you're going to notice the two ends are different. What we want is, we want the hole on this end for that hole, and we're going to turn this down, you can see how this bend is, we want that facing down. We're going to take this hex bolt, we've got some thread lock on it, and all we're going to do is we're going to hand tighten. We're not going to tighten it down, we're just going to put it in by hand for right now. We want to be able to move that.Next, we're going to take our bracket, it looks like this, you have one for each side, both the same, and then you're going to have four Allen head bolts like this. These are going to go in the place where we took out the original bolts from our jounce stops, so we're going to set this up just like this. You'll notice the bottom is kind of inverted there. We're going to set it up like this. We'll go ahead and thread these into place. Now that we've hand tightened it on, we know it's going to fit properly, we'll take a wrench and we'll secure it to the frame. You're going to repeat that same thing on the other side. Now we're going to need a 13 millimeter socket or wrench, wrench preferred. You're going to need your elbow fitting like this, star washer, and the large nut. On the top of your bag you're going to have a little rubber cap, go ahead and pull that off, we won't need it. We want to take this part of our bracket, and it's going to face toward the spring here, so let's see if we can get this in here. You'll notice there's an alignment tab right there. On the bottom or your bracket there's two holes. On the front of the bracket or inside of the bracket there's two large holes. The two large holes are for this part. The two small holes are for the alignment tab, so what we're going to do is we're going to put in one, and we're going to see, we're going to try to line it up and see where the bag sits level. You can see where the rear hole here, and then our alignment pin is in the back hole. Now we're going to take our star washer, put it over the top, and then we're going to take our large nut and thread that down into place. We're going to take the elbow, thread that onto the top, and then take our wrench, you want to try to get that elbow, or the red thread lock there, down in there as much as we can. We do want to make sure that you don't damage this part. As you'll remember, I talked about the ends of the bracket tapering out. What we're going to do is we're going to take these two ends, we're going to take our bag and we're going to rotate it. I want to get these flanges that stick out back behind our U bolts, our factory U bolts here. That's going to hold our bracket into place there. Next you want to take a 1 1/8 wrench, and we're going to tighten that nut down. Then you repeat that on the other side.Next you're going to need your U bolt, you're going to need this bracket. You see it has a rounded edge, and you're going to need two flange nuts. We're going to take our U bolt, we're going to go in between the bag and our leaf spring, and it's going to fit right in that slot, just like that. We're going to take this, you want this rounded edge to go to the bottom of your axle. We're just going to feed it right through the holes that are in the bracket, just like that. We'll put on a flange nut on each side, just like that, and we'll tighten them into place. You want to make sure that you don't have any lines or anything pinched inside of here. You want to try and tighten these evenly, so do about three or four turns on each one.Now we'll take a 14 millimeter wrench, go around and tighten that bolt on the bottom, that's holding our bag to this bottom bracket. Now that we have our driver side air bag installed, you can see this hose kind of sits where our bag is. I'm going to pull it over here, and I'm actually going to zip tie it right to this emergency brake line. Now, installing the passenger side air bag, everything's going to be the same with one exception. You're going to have a heat shield that you're going to need to put between this bracket and the top of the bag.Now we're going to take our air line tube, and it's going to come in a roll, so what you want to do is you want to unroll it. When you find the center, we're going to cut that line in half. Now you want to make sure you're not using pliers or anything like that to cut it. You want to use an airline tube cutter. If you don't have one of these, it's part number F9009. I'm just going to put it between there, just like that. You can see, I turned my thing so I can run my airline right through here. I'm going to take the end, I'm going to push it right into the end. Push it in until it stops, and then give it a little tug to make sure it's in there secured. The kit's going to come with a little bracket like this. This is for your air fittings. It's going to come with two zip ties. If you have a hitch installed, you can mount this right up to your hitch, run the zip tie so that it will hold that bracket into place. That gives you a mounting location for your air fittings. If you don't have a hitch installed, you can also, up here on the bumper side, you can drill a couple holes anywhere up here. You just want to make sure if you do any drilling, wherever you decide to put them, there's nothing behind it that you're going to damage.I'm going to run my zip ties right up around my hitch here, like that, cut off the end of our zip ties. These are going to be your fittings that we're going to put on our bracket. This little white cap, we're going to remove it, but we want to hold onto that. We're going to remove this nut, flat washer, insert it, flat washer on the front side, and then we'll reinstall the nut. Make sure you don't tighten it so tight that you crack this because it is plastic. This is how I ran my line. Keep in mind, we're going to be putting the spare tire back up, so we don't want to run it straight across. I found this existing wiring and zip tied it right along, ran it right with it, went over top of this brace here, zip tied it here, existing wire running along the back of our bumper here, zip tied it here, and around that right into my fitting. Now we'll see how much, we want to make sure we're not getting this too tight because we don't want to put a bend in it, so I think about like that would be good. Go ahead and cut our line. Make sure you got a good cut, it's not pinched, and insert it, give it a little tug and make sure it's in there secured and well. Now we're going to run our passenger air line tube. Keep in mind we have the exhaust over there. In your kit you're going to have two sleeves like this. I'm going to go ahead and slide them on the end like this, and this is the end that I'm going to be putting into the top of my air bag, so I'm going to route this real quick and I'll show you how I did it. This is where my slip on heat shield for my hose is, zip tied it right to this existing line, right on the back side of our hitch, and we had some existing wiring on the backside of our bumper, zip tied it here, now we can go ahead and cut it to get in our fitting. Now what we want to do is we want to add about 70 pounds, or 70 psi to each bag. Now what we want to do is take some soapy water, and we want to spray where our air line is going into all of our fittings, so we'll start with the top of the bag. What we're looking for, we're looking for any big bubbles. If you see big bubbles, that means you have an air leak, we need to make some adjustments. It looks like this fitting's good. We'll go ahead and check our fittings back here. We don't have anything there. We'll do the same thing to the passenger side. Once you have everything installed and you've tested it, make sure you don't have any leaks, make any adjustments necessary if you do find a leak. Go ahead and put your spare tire up. You're ready to go.That will do it for our look at and installation on the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, part number F2560 on our 2016 Ram 3500.

They work great, one issue I have is there is a small leak somewhere, I have to air the bags up about every 10 days, no big deal that gives me a chance to get under the truck and check for other issues, I like the product , easy to install

Ryan S - 07/22/2019

In checking for leaks we recommend using a spray bottle with some soapy water, and I would start your leak inspection at any of the connections points (to the bag, or at the fill point), and then the rest of the lines.

Great install video. Thank you especially for calling out the tools and socket sizes as you went. That made everything so much easier. Great tip on getting the line cutting tool. I installed in 2 hours as you suggested. Worked great, no leaks first try. Great customer service at eTrailer each and every time. 343275

I purchased this kit for my 2015 Ram 3500 HD Crew Cab Dually diesel. I installed in my garage, following the instructions, very simple to do. I tow a 32' enclosed car trailer, and these bags have been a must have addition for stabilizing the rear suspension. When fully loaded and traveling I put 40# in them and it makes a huge difference in how the truck handles overall. Couldn't be happier! 287435

I have zero issues with this air bag system since I bought it a year ago. The air fittings are of good quality and hold pressure with no leakage. 100 satisfied with this system.

Great product. Took about an hour and a half to install lying on my back. If I had a lift, I'm sure I could do it in under an hour. This is the second truck that I have installed these air bags on and both times, installed once and never had to do any extra servicing to the system what-so-ever. Just make sure you make your tubing cuts clean and perpendicular and push the tubing all the way in. Never have a leak. Period. 435215

Quickly arrived and pretty easy to install. I filled to approx 20psi just as a daily driver but already can tell a big difference in the overall handling of the truck. The rear end feels stabilizes quickly when hitting bumps and the body rill is greatly reduced.I have yet to try them with a heavy load but I have no doubt they will perform great. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. 517454

Still a great product a year later. I have pulled heavier trailers across the country, used it for my 30ft travel trailer. Alls i need to do is adjust the pressure to my desired settings and the truck rides smoothly down the highway nice and level. Highly recommended product. Product is holding up well.

We’ve had the airbags on for several trips now and love them. Our cousin was impressed so they had a set installed with the onboard compressor. I have always carried an air compressor with me so I didn’t install one. Our 5th Wheel has a much gentler bounce over rough terrane, and unhitching and hitching up is a little nicer now. Great product. 672981

They work perfect. Due to my truck coming with the factory installed Puck System, it was the only to go for installation. Other systems required a bracket to go up and over the frame which in not possible with factory installed hitch system. They perform perfectly as I like to have a little more support when hauling my fifth wheel camper and gooseneck trailers. 609449

Just Installed the new Ride Rite Airbags on my new 2019 Silverado High Country 3500 SRW. This is my 3rd set of Ride Rite Bags. I've had these air Bags on a previous 2008 GMC HD 2500 and a 2013 GMC Denali 3500 Dually. I have a heavy Toy Hauler Fifth Wheel and these Airbags are a must have. I have about 3500 LBS on the Pin and with about 60 PSI in the bags it brings me back close to factory ride height and gives a much nicer ride than without. The bags bring you back up off of the overload springs so it rides much smoother and the other added benefit is that your headlights are pointed correctly so you are not blinding the oncoming vehicles and constantly getting flashed. As to the installation I had my 2 previous sets installed at a shop. This set I decided to do myself after watching the install video and reading the supplied instructions. It was pretty simple I took my time to make sure I had each step correct and It took about 3 hours to complete. I think now that I have done it I could cut that time in half. Best choice for handling a heavy load I highly recommend them! 638023

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

I have used the Firestone suspension air bags to adjust my 2017 F150 when carrying large cargo box loads. It worked very well for the loads I was carrying, which were between 800 lbs to as much as 1100 lbs on other occasions. My only objection is a slow leak in my left side, which may be in the left air bag itself or tubing fittings. After I installed the system, I used a soap solution to check for leaks. At the time I could not find any. Because it is a slow leak, I simply have had to top off either the left or right side air bags and I am fine to go for the day. 636096

Comments

Dont forget to check at the Schrader valve, as well. Those have been known to leak. The soap solution test works great, unless its a very slow leak.

So far, I would give this product a 5 star rating. I must say, the installation directions from Firestone are a bit lacking. However, the installation video from etrailer made the installation a snap. I completed the installation in about 3 hours. I'm confident these Ride Rite bags will improve my hauling and towing performance when I go on long fishing trips fully loaded with gear and pulling my 19 foot boat. Also, etrailer was as good as their word when I asked them to honor their price pledge. 505966

Delivery was very quick. Everything I ordered came in great shape and complete. I installed these air bags on a 2015 F250 for hauling our 5th wheel. It took me around 5hrs more or less to install by myself. I have never done this before and kept checking everything twice. That and I used all hand operated tools. The instructions were good. But watching the installation video 1st was helpful. 638601

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Simple to install, took my time, the brackets of my 5th wheel did not prevent me from installing it, there was room between the custom bracket and my frame, so if you have a Silverado 2012 with custom brackets check to see if you have nearly 1/2 an inch clearance, than you can use this item. Suggestion to etrailer, re-box the item, reinforce the box to ensure that the box and items are not mangled in shipment. the box was a mess, had been re-taped some time along the shipment line, freaked me out where I had to inventory everything and really check for damage, especially the hose, part of it was not serviceable and I had to ensure that I did not use that section which was right in the middle of the hose. Other than that, I am happy with it. 52628

It allows me to easily increase the air pressure to compensate for camper tongue weight and lower pressure for a soft ride when no tongue weight exists. The installation at etrailer was superior as always. Outstanding company to do business with. 432066

Product is well engineered but difficult to install doing to the limited room. The disc that goes into the joust bumper holder needs to be looked at. the joust holder has a radiused upper edge while the disc has a square corner. a radius had to be ground on the upper edge of the disc to get it to fit. Other than this all parts fit well, brackets lined up. Kit was put on a 2015 silverado 2500hd 6.6 liter duramax. definitely a 2 man job due to the limited access. overall a good product 224103

Took a few hours to get it completed, and went in as described. Have not had opportunity to test them out under load, but figure they would perform as expected. Instructions were not totally accurate, 4 bolts had changed size (to a smaller bolt than listed), but anyone with common sense could figure it out. (I did. LOL!) Wish "they" had included a "T" to inflate them equally, but purchased one at Lowes for about $6. I also "beefed up" the hose around sharp corners to protect them from getting damaged. 131693

I purchased a Ride Rite kit for my 06 Ram. This is my third kit for my trucks. I haul scrap and routinely gross 30K. I need quality running gear. etrailer provided what I needed at a great price and fast. I also needed a replacement air bag for my 2012 Ram. I found it cheaper from a competitor. Rather than order it from that vendor I gave etrailer the info and they matched the price plus a little extra. This is where I shop, and so should you. 551930

Last year I bought a f2299 air bag kit. With no mechanical skill and some common sense I had these installed (3hrs max.) into a Dodge 3500 to pull our 41ft 5th wheel camper. Took it to Fl. from Ks and forgot I had it along. Just bought my second pair, f2071 for my old '98. AWESOME product! holds air indefinitely. 241426

This system I installed on my 2012 Ford F-450 dually pickup. I love it!! I replaced a air bag system that I had put on by so called professionals. It was terrible. It mounted under the spring shackles. It helped when puling a heavy loaded trailer but rode terrible otherwise. The system I bought from e-trailer uses air bags under the rear axles. It handles heavy loads when air up to 90 psi and rides smooth when empty at 25 psi. I recommend it highly. 595195

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on a 2009 F-250 SD. Installation was difficult. Only because I didn't have access to a lift. Product is well built. It provides the rear suspension support I was looking for. Added bonus is my 3/4 ton rides smoother now. I pull a 35 foot travel trailer and a golf cart in the bed of my truck. I noticed the added weight of the cart was lowering the back end of my truck and affecting the steering. Not much, but enough where I needed to do something. There was one problem with the instructions/diagram. When assembling the bottom bracket pieces, the diagram showed the bolt heads on the outside. I had to reverse them in order to clear the jounce stop to get proper alignment with the top bracket. See photos. I also found a leak on one of the connections on top of the drivers side air spring. I pressured both springs to 40 pounds and let sit over night. There was a 20 pound drop on drivers side the next morning. I applied a kids bubble solution with a syringe ( works great) to find the leak. since there is sealer on the threads, I just gave it about 3/4 turn. Problem solved. Overall, I think this is a great product which I would recommend. 221059

Kit cam quickly and the instructions were clear enough if you are mechanically inclined. If your not then don't try this because you need to have a good safe way to raise you vehicle pull the wheels off the back and work under for a couple hours. That being said once installed on my 2016 Tacoma the performance was excellent. I am currently running about 12 psi. And the hitch is about 1 1/2" higher with no load. Hooked onto my mower trailer with mower and it handled it as easily as my 2500HD. Mower is a JD 27hp 60" zero turn commercial. Haven't hooked the camper up to it but this definitely made the towing on my Taco much better. Great addition to any smaller or 1/2 ton truck that needs some beef in the back. Truck will be safer to handle loads if you do your air to match the load. I just use a bicycle pump to adjust. Easy to be accurate with each side. 405062

Air bags are so cool! So I put these on a Ford F-350 DRW 4x4 Extended Cab, with the diesel engine. The instructions are easy to follow and the kit contained everything you need. The videos are also helpful as well, plus I suggest reading though the entire instructions (sorry guys) to get a feel for what the end product will look like, this really helps to identify the challenges that you will face and for me it helps to answered some of the questions that pop up in the early part of the instructions. I didn't have any problems installing the kit, went on in half a day at a leisurely pace. I've had them on for a year now and they are working great. I carry a 4,000 pound slide in camper and jet boat and these air bags will level the truck right back out. I also installed a set of Troklift spring helpers (not sure of the correct title), they help take the sway out by fully engaging the overload springs when the airbags are inflated. Between the two they handle the camper without issue and actually make it please to drive. I do like airbags for the adjustability of them, I've used both air bags and super heavy overload leaf springs in the past and went back to the airbags just for this reason. Good luck wit your project. 321356

Was concerned if thls kit would fit a 2010 Silverado 2500 HD Quad cab with 6.5 ft. bed with a B&W fifth wheel turn over ball hitch. It took me 2.5 hours and every thing fit perfect. No problem with the instructions dead on, and the only holes I had to drill was in the rear bumper for the air fittings. Have had them on since November no air leaks or problems. This make my truck ride excellent with my toy hauler and other gooseneck trailer I have. Alot cheeper than a air pin box and does the same thing,no more chucking and bouncing. thanks 7291

Opened the box and in awe, I called my service guy, but he couldn't get to it for a week, so I started in. Rolled my truck up on some blocks. Removing the stock rubber bumper was easy. Then the installation. Bolting the upper housing onto the frame was the first job and was easy, except I forgot to include the spacer. So two steps later I had to unbolt it , insert the spacer and re tighten it. The rest of it went well and is now ready for the air line. Quit for the day and this morning will install the other side, which should go much easier now that I have learned from the first side. So it looks hopeful that even I can accomplish this. As a 75 year old retired surgeon that is saying a lot! Stay tuned for next installment which should review performance. 483120

The airbags installed very easy. It took us about two and half hours to get the job done, and that’s after getting ahead of ourselves a couple times and having to redo some steps. It makes the vehicle ride great and I can’t wait Took my trailer up to it and see how it tows. 544910
