Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

Video Transcript for Firestone Ride-Rite Rear Air Helper Springs Installation - 2017 Ford E-Series Cutaway

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Ford E-Series Cutaway, we're going to be installing Firestone's Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, part number F2458.These air bags are going to help you restore your ride height under a heavy load. They're also going to provide you some additional cushioning, making your ride a little bit smoother. When your vehicle's ride height is set back to its factory even height, that'll also increase your braking performance as 70% of your braking is done by your front brakes, this will allow that weight distribution to act normally. It can be adjusted from 5-100 PSI as desired. If your vehicle's unloaded, set it to 5 PSI, and that will help maintain proper operation of your air bags. You never want to run them fully empty, and you can go up to 100 PSI, which gives you your maximum load support. The big advantage of having air bags over your typical bump stock upgrades, is that it's going to allow further adjustment. You're going to be able to adjust left to right, so in your RV if you've got a couch on one side and not so much on the other side, or you've got your sink, and your stove on one side, if your weight's uneven this is going to allow you to level it out, bringing back any steering and braking performance that you we're losing, and also help to reduce sway. We'll begin by doing some preparation.

We'll set the top bracket on top of the air bag. Now these brackets are different. You'll want to check on top, they'll be labeled L or R, L for drivers side, R for passenger side. And we're going to use that as a template to install our lower bracket. We need to orient the bracket to where the L sides are facing the same side as our square opening. So we'll turn our air bag sideways, put our bracket in place, now thread the 3/4 inch hex head bolt into the bottom of your air spring.

We're going to be threading it in the front most hole. And when you tighten these down, you want to make sure that your brackets are completely even, so that your L bracket's here line up smoothly with these brackets here. Once you've got it installed, double check your brackets to make sure that they line up.We're now underneath the vehicle on our passenger side rear axle. We're going to remove the jounce bumper that's installed on the vehicle currently. Take off the nut on top using a 15 millimeter wrench or socket.

We can now take both of these and set them aside. You now want to take the bracket for the appropriate side, we're doing our passenger side, so we have the one labeled R. Take the carriage bolt, slide it through the underside of the bracket, and then slide this up through the hole where we just removed our jounce bumper. Then take one of the flanged nuts, and thread it on top of the carriage bolt. Now we'll work our air bag into place. Set it on top of the axle, and begin sliding it over. You may need to push down on the air bag while sliding it over to get it underneath the bracket. Now push your air bag up underneath the bracket, and lining up the holes on top of the air bag.

You want to make sure your lower bracket is pushed all the way up against the spring so that the L brackets are on each side of your U-bolt on your axle. We'll now take the longer 4 inch carriage bolts, and we're going to slide them down into our lower bracket. You'll see two square holes on each side of the air bag, we're going to be using the inner most hole. Now when threading this in, you are going to have to kind of press in on the air bag to allow the carriage bolt to slide all the way through. And now we're going to do the same thing on the other side of our air bag. Then take the square U-bolt, slide it from the outside of the leaf spring towards the inside, going through the holes in the lower bracket. Thread a locking flanged nut onto each side of the U-bolt.Now take the small strap, and set it into place. They're a little bit offset, we're going to put the thicker side towards the U-bolt. And again, thread on flanged nuts onto each of those. We're now going to thread on our large nylon nut, on top of the air bag. Now tighten down the nut using a 24 millimeter socket or wrench. Make sure that when you tighten down the nut, that the rear most hole is lined up with the small alignment peg on top of your air bag.We can now go back and tighten down all the loose hardware with a 15 millimeter socket. I recommend tightening the U-bolts first, to make sure that it pulls it up tight against your leaf spring. Now go back and torque all of your hardware for the specifications in your instructions. Now take the smaller 5/16ths bolt in the kit, and slide it through the outside of the frame rail inward. Then take the top brace with the R written on it, indicating that it's for our passenger side, feed it up, and slide the bracket over the bolt, and then thread the nut on.We're now ready to line up our bolt holes for our side brackets. We'll be putting two bolts on each side. On the side with four hole slots, we'll be putting one on the top towards the outside of the vesicle towards the wheel, and one on the bottom towards the inside towards your differential. You may need to use a pry bar, something else to help you pry the holes into their appropriate location. Then insert the bolts in the two holes on the other side of the bracket. Then go back and tighten down all your hardware. The top most bolt, you'll tighten down with a 13 millimeter socket and wrench. Then you'll tighten down the remaining four bolts using a 15 millimeter socket and wrench. Now go back and torque all of your remaining hardware to the specifications in your instructions. And lastly, we'll thread in our quick connect air hose fitting. It'll thread right here on top into the large opening, and once you've reached the orange material it's going to get a little harder, and you're going to want to make sure you get at least two threads of contact in there to seal properly. You can tighten this down with a 1/2 inch wrench. And I'll repeat all these same steps on the other side. And now if one of your air bags is close to the exhaust, there is a provided heat shield. We're going to get install it on our vehicle because it is a little close, and you'll need to do a little preparation. The small tabs in the center, you'll want to bend in ward, the same direction on both sides, and then you'll take half of that tab and bend it outward. This will allow us to put it against our exhaust, and clamp it on.Now place your heat shield in the most appropriate position, this is our closest point to our air bags, so we'll be placing it here. Then slide on of your hose clamps over one of the tabs on the heat shield and your exhaust, and tighten it down. You can tighten it down with an 8 millimeter socket or a flat bladed screwdriver. Now put your other clamp on the other tab. We'll now take the bracket provided in the kit for mounting our inflation fittings, and we need to find a suitable location that's easy to access, but it's also going to be up out of the way to keep any damage from occurring on the hoses or fittings. We're going to be putting ours next to our battery tray here, on our RV.Run your zip tie up over through your bracket, and then do the same thing with your other zip tie. Now we can trim off any excess. Then install both of your fittings onto your bracket, remove the nut that comes pre installed on the fitting, slide it through the bracket, and thread the nut back on. Do that for both of your fittings. Now tighten down your fittings using a 13 millimeter wrench. You can use two wrenches, one to hold the backside, but since it's a plastic bracket you can usually just hold it with one hand and tighten with the wrench on the other. We're now ready to run our air hose. We'll start back at the air bag, and we'll connect our end, run our line to our fittings, trim it, and make sure it's the appropriate length. Once you've got the appropriate length, take some hose cutters. You can pick up a pair here at etrailer.com, these will cut it nice square and flush, so it'll seat properly. We've got our hose back at our air bag here, and then just push it into the fitting on top of your air bag. Once you get it in, make sure that you go in and out with it so it's fully seated. It's a good idea to keep a little extra loop on your fitting, this way you have some extra for future repairs, and can also work as a little moisture trap. We're going to set it back in there, we'll zip tie it out of the way. Then we'll take the other end of our hose, and we'll press it into the back of our fitting. Then you want to make sure that it's fully seated, pushing it in and out, making sure it goes in all the way. Then you'll repeat the same run on the other side. We're now ready to check for leaks. So go ahead and get your air hose, apply some air to each fitting, a little bit goes a long way, so just a few seconds and you'll be pretty close to full. After you've got it aired up per your instructions, we'll take some soapy water and we'll check for leaks. If there's a presence of bubbles there's some leaks, and you may need to adjust your air hose or fitting. If you have no bubbles, then you're good to go.And that completes our installation of Firestone's Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs, on our 2017 Ford E-Series Cutaway.

We’ve had the airbags on for several trips now and love them. Our cousin was impressed so they had a set installed with the onboard compressor. I have always carried an air compressor with me so I didn’t install one. Our 5th Wheel has a much gentler bounce over rough terrane, and unhitching and hitching up is a little nicer now. Great product. 672981

They work great, one issue I have is there is a small leak somewhere, I have to air the bags up about every 10 days, no big deal that gives me a chance to get under the truck and check for other issues, I like the product , easy to install

In checking for leaks we recommend using a spray bottle with some soapy water, and I would start your leak inspection at any of the connections points (to the bag, or at the fill point), and then the rest of the lines.

I bought the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags for my 2014 Toyota Tacoma SR5 because the rear end sagged way too much when hauling our four mountain bikes on my Thule platform rack. The installation was very straightforward and took roughly 4 hours. A year later, the airbags work awesome, and I wish I had know to add them when I first bought the truck five years ago! 663926

Easy to install. The bags were easy to install, Ride is nice, If I had to pick on the install I wood say cutting the bump stops makes removing them shod you wish to cost you new bump stops. 2991

Quickly arrived and pretty easy to install. I filled to approx 20psi just as a daily driver but already can tell a big difference in the overall handling of the truck. The rear end feels stabilizes quickly when hitting bumps and the body rill is greatly reduced.I have yet to try them with a heavy load but I have no doubt they will perform great. 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. 517454

Still a great product a year later. I have pulled heavier trailers across the country, used it for my 30ft travel trailer. Alls i need to do is adjust the pressure to my desired settings and the truck rides smoothly down the highway nice and level. Highly recommended product. Product is holding up well.

They work perfect. Due to my truck coming with the factory installed Puck System, it was the only to go for installation. Other systems required a bracket to go up and over the frame which in not possible with factory installed hitch system. They perform perfectly as I like to have a little more support when hauling my fifth wheel camper and gooseneck trailers. 609449

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

The Firestone Ride Rite was repackaged by etrailer and not shipped in the original manufactures shipping box. Heat shield was damaged considerably during shipping; bent, gouged and scratched. I straightened out the heat shield with a rubber mallet and anvil. Still scratched up but serviceable. I was able to file the rough edges. Everything else was fine. Installation and instructions very straight forward. The final assembly and installation came out very nice. I'm very pleased with the product and would highly recommend. I haven't hauled my new fifth wheel trailer yet and therefore have not had the chance to verify how well it levels and rides. I anticipate having to play around with air pressure to adjust the ride height and ride. Once air pressures are determined for a specific load, it just a matter of setting the pressure that works best for the load. I expect it to work perfectly and possibly improve my ride. This product was installed on a 2013 GMC Sierra Denali 3500 HD 4x4. Great fit. 4 out of 5 stars for packaging/shipping/damage. 246592

Product arrived quickly. These air helper springs look very well made. They were relatively easy to install. The difficulties I had were related to the equipment and tools I had (or didn't). I only had hand tools. So the install took a lot longer than suggested. All the parts fit and matched up without interfering with any parts on the vehicle. We'll see how they stand up to use over time. 227862

The Firestone Ride-Rite vehicle suspension system is excellent. It allows me to easily increase the air pressure to compensate for camper tongue weight and lower pressure for a soft ride when no tongue weight exists. The installation at etrailer was superior as always. Outstanding company to do business with. 432066

So far, I would give this product a 5 star rating. I must say, the installation directions from Firestone are a bit lacking. However, the installation video from etrailer made the installation a snap. I completed the installation in about 3 hours. I'm confident these Ride Rite bags will improve my hauling and towing performance when I go on long fishing trips fully loaded with gear and pulling my 19 foot boat. Also, etrailer was as good as their word when I asked them to honor their price pledge. 505966

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Just Installed the new Ride Rite Airbags on my new 2019 Silverado High Country 3500 SRW. This is my 3rd set of Ride Rite Bags. I've had these air Bags on a previous 2008 GMC HD 2500 and a 2013 GMC Denali 3500 Dually. I have a heavy Toy Hauler Fifth Wheel and these Airbags are a must have. I have about 3500 LBS on the Pin and with about 60 PSI in the bags it brings me back close to factory ride height and gives a much nicer ride than without. The bags bring you back up off of the overload springs so it rides much smoother and the other added benefit is that your headlights are pointed correctly so you are not blinding the oncoming vehicles and constantly getting flashed. As to the installation I had my 2 previous sets installed at a shop. This set I decided to do myself after watching the install video and reading the supplied instructions. It was pretty simple I took my time to make sure I had each step correct and It took about 3 hours to complete. I think now that I have done it I could cut that time in half. Best choice for handling a heavy load I highly recommend them! 638023

Product is well engineered but difficult to install doing to the limited room. The disc that goes into the joust bumper holder needs to be looked at. the joust holder has a radiused upper edge while the disc has a square corner. a radius had to be ground on the upper edge of the disc to get it to fit. Other than this all parts fit well, brackets lined up. Kit was put on a 2015 silverado 2500hd 6.6 liter duramax. definitely a 2 man job due to the limited access. overall a good product 224103

Simple to install, took my time, the brackets of my 5th wheel did not prevent me from installing it, there was room between the custom bracket and my frame, so if you have a Silverado 2012 with custom brackets check to see if you have nearly 1/2 an inch clearance, than you can use this item. Suggestion to etrailer, re-box the item, reinforce the box to ensure that the box and items are not mangled in shipment. the box was a mess, had been re-taped some time along the shipment line, freaked me out where I had to inventory everything and really check for damage, especially the hose, part of it was not serviceable and I had to ensure that I did not use that section which was right in the middle of the hose. Other than that, I am happy with it. 52628

This product showed up and packaged as described. Installation was fairly simple and completely explained in the instructions. It took about two hours. The filler valves are a little fragile. Definitely makes pulling my 27' RV a lot less stressfull. 49787

Took a few hours to get it completed, and went in as described. Have not had opportunity to test them out under load, but figure they would perform as expected. Instructions were not totally accurate, 4 bolts had changed size (to a smaller bolt than listed), but anyone with common sense could figure it out. (I did. LOL!) Wish "they" had included a "T" to inflate them equally, but purchased one at Lowes for about $6. I also "beefed up" the hose around sharp corners to protect them from getting damaged. 131693

Working great! Added an on-board compressor to the unit and use it to tow Travel Trailer. Does not get a LOT of use, but when it does, its great!

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

I have used the Firestone suspension air bags to adjust my 2017 F150 when carrying large cargo box loads. It worked very well for the loads I was carrying, which were between 800 lbs to as much as 1100 lbs on other occasions. My only objection is a slow leak in my left side, which may be in the left air bag itself or tubing fittings. After I installed the system, I used a soap solution to check for leaks. At the time I could not find any. Because it is a slow leak, I simply have had to top off either the left or right side air bags and I am fine to go for the day. 636096

Comments

Dont forget to check at the Schrader valve, as well. Those have been known to leak. The soap solution test works great, unless its a very slow leak.

This system I installed on my 2012 Ford F-450 dually pickup. I love it!! I replaced a air bag system that I had put on by so called professionals. It was terrible. It mounted under the spring shackles. It helped when puling a heavy loaded trailer but rode terrible otherwise. The system I bought from e-trailer uses air bags under the rear axles. It handles heavy loads when air up to 90 psi and rides smooth when empty at 25 psi. I recommend it highly. 595195

I purchased a Ride Rite kit for my 06 Ram. This is my third kit for my trucks. I haul scrap and routinely gross 30K. I need quality running gear. etrailer provided what I needed at a great price and fast. I also needed a replacement air bag for my 2012 Ram. I found it cheaper from a competitor. Rather than order it from that vendor I gave etrailer the info and they matched the price plus a little extra. This is where I shop, and so should you. 551930

Review from a similar Firestone Ride-Rite in Vehicle Suspension

Installed on a 2009 F-250 SD. Installation was difficult. Only because I didn't have access to a lift. Product is well built. It provides the rear suspension support I was looking for. Added bonus is my 3/4 ton rides smoother now. I pull a 35 foot travel trailer and a golf cart in the bed of my truck. I noticed the added weight of the cart was lowering the back end of my truck and affecting the steering. Not much, but enough where I needed to do something. There was one problem with the instructions/diagram. When assembling the bottom bracket pieces, the diagram showed the bolt heads on the outside. I had to reverse them in order to clear the jounce stop to get proper alignment with the top bracket. See photos. I also found a leak on one of the connections on top of the drivers side air spring. I pressured both springs to 40 pounds and let sit over night. There was a 20 pound drop on drivers side the next morning. I applied a kids bubble solution with a syringe ( works great) to find the leak. since there is sealer on the threads, I just gave it about 3/4 turn. Problem solved. Overall, I think this is a great product which I would recommend. 221059

When i got the package i immediately inventoried it and found i was missing an upper bracket. A short call to etrailer and they ordered another one free of charge. The estimated time of delivery given by the website was beat by several days. Install instructions weren't bad but the video posted on the website attached to the product page was much more helpful. A friend and i got the job done in about 3 hours but honestly could have done it in half the time. A torque wrench and a very low profile set of sockets and an automotive creeper is a must for the job. Overall, etrailer did a very good job handleing the parts situation and will recieve my business in the future. 225314

Last year I bought a f2299 air bag kit. With no mechanical skill and some common sense I had these installed (3hrs max.) into a Dodge 3500 to pull our 41ft 5th wheel camper. Took it to Fl. from Ks and forgot I had it along. Just bought my second pair, f2071 for my old '98. AWESOME product! holds air indefinitely. 241426

Kit cam quickly and the instructions were clear enough if you are mechanically inclined. If your not then don't try this because you need to have a good safe way to raise you vehicle pull the wheels off the back and work under for a couple hours. That being said once installed on my 2016 Tacoma the performance was excellent. I am currently running about 12 psi. And the hitch is about 1 1/2" higher with no load. Hooked onto my mower trailer with mower and it handled it as easily as my 2500HD. Mower is a JD 27hp 60" zero turn commercial. Haven't hooked the camper up to it but this definitely made the towing on my Taco much better. Great addition to any smaller or 1/2 ton truck that needs some beef in the back. Truck will be safer to handle loads if you do your air to match the load. I just use a bicycle pump to adjust. Easy to be accurate with each side. 405062

The air bags are the second purchase for this product for two different Toyota trucks in three years. I chose etrailer because they are thorough, always right and provide excellent customer service. The bags worked well with my bumper pull last year at around 20 psig and now with our new fifth wheel at 55 psig. Both sets of Firestone bags have been excellent. The Toyota Tundra pulls our Grand Design very well. We drove from South Carolina to New Mexico with no problems and a smooth ride thanks to etrailer and Firestone! 409027

I installed this on my 93 Chevy Z71 shortbed about one year ago and it is working great. The short wheelbase allows for more strength but the hwy springs are too soft for heavy loads. This airbag system allows me to haul a full load of wood on my 10k trailer and the pickup bed loaded as well. I carry a hand air pump in the toolbox to adjust the air bags whenever needed. This suspension mod allows me to haul maximum loads out of the woods and makes for a smooth and safe ride on the Hwy. 316278

Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • Compatibility of Different Suspension Enhancement Kits on 2017 Ford E-Series Cutaway
  • If a vehicle already has a Firestone rear axle air bag kit like # F2458 installed you cannot also install a Sumo Springs jounce spring kit like # SSR-130-54 but you really should not need to. But it may be possible to use a Suspension Stabilizer and Sway Control Kit like # SSA22 so long as the installation requirements do not interfere with your particular Firestone setup. The installation instructions and a video for kit # SSA22 are linked to show you how these install. This type of...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2018 Forest River Forester Motorhome E-450
  • Adjustable suspension enhancement would be your best option. This will give you the ability to add the exact amount of additional support you'd need to prevent bottoming out while also not making the suspension overly stiff. So for that you'd want the Firestone Ride Rite kit part # F2458 which is a confirmed fit for your 2018 Forest River class C 32 ft. on a Ford E-450 chassis. For a compressor kit to make inflating and maintaining the air bags easy we have the Firestone kit part #...

  • Your 2015 Forest River Sunseeker Class C motorhome with Firestone Ride Rite helper springs is made on the e- series chassis, so you most likely have the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs - Rear Axle # F2458. These springs should be run from 5psi to 100psi and yes you can use regular compressed air at your gas station. • Which Suspension Enhancement Kit is Best for 2018 Forest River 3251 DS LE Towing All the Time
  • If you are always towing with a vehicle such as your 2018 Forest River 3251 DS LE I'd go with the Timbren setup part # TFERSDLB that you mentioned. This installs easier and since it's maintenance free it's the easiest and best solution for you. Air bag kits like the # F2458 work great but they are more ideal for someone who will sometimes be towing and other times not since you can more easily adjust the support you need. But if you are always towing then not ever having to worry about...
