Video Transcript for Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Air Helper Spings Installation - 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today on our 2006 Dodge RAM pick-up 2500, we'll be installing the AIR LIFT, LoadLifter 5000 air helper spring, part#AL57295. To begin our install, we're first going to go ahead measure our suspension height with the vehicle unloaded and the manufacturer's current suspension system. From the wheel well edge down to the ground, we have 41-1/4 inches with no weight. We're going to go ahead and add approximately 2500 pounds to the bed of our pickup. With our weight in the bed, you can see it's caused the rear to sag and we've lowered the suspension about 3-1/4 inches, to 38 inches from the wheel well down to the ground. With this added weight, we're going to drive it through our test course. We'll go through the slalom course with the added weight. You'll notice the excessive body roll and there is also a lack of steering handling and feel with the added weight.

Next, we'll go over our uneven bumps to simulate potholes. You can see the excessive bounce and roll from the suspension. Then we'll go through our straight bumps to simulate a speed bump and again we have the excessive bounce. Let's go ahead, install the air helper springs. With air in our helper springs, we'll now go ahead and re-install our 2500 pounds. With the weight re-added and air in the air springs as necessary, it brings it back to our normal ride height.

We'll go ahead and run it through our test course again. Bringing the vehicle back up to ride height and helping control the weight, it brings back our steering stability and ride quality. Let's go ahead and show you how to install the air helper springs. First you need to remove the old manufacturer's jounce bumpers. The jounce bumpers are secured to a bracket welded to the bottom of the frame with two fasteners, one in the front, one in the back. To make it easier to remove the fasteners we're going to spray each one with a spray lubricant first.

Once we remove the bolts in the jounce bumper here on the driver's side, I'll move over to the passenger's side and repeat the same process. Now that we have the jounce bumpers off, we're going to move to our work station where we can go ahead and start assembling the air bag assembly. To assemble the air bag, we're going to take one of the roll plates, line-up the pre-drilled holes with the top of the air bag assembly. We'll then go ahead and install the 90 degree air fitting into the top of the air bag assembly. You'll notice that it has a pre-installed sealant on the thread. First we'll install it finger tight and then go an additional one and a half turns to tighten it down, being careful not to over-tighten it.

Next, we'll flip our air bag over, take a second role plate and set it into position. Now with the role plates and the air fitting installed, we'll go ahead and install one of our upper brackets directly to the air bag. As we install the upper bracket, we'll first need to identify it. Looking at the part number you'll notice it's #07256. That indicates one of the upper brackets and this particular one goes to the top of the air bag. There will be a second upper bracket part #07149 that will get attached to the jounce bumper plate on the frame. Similar but slightly different as the round holes are wider apart. Now we'll go ahead and line up the pre-drilled holes here and the upper air spring bracket and then secure them with the cap headed screws that will go through the bracket, through the role plate, and into the top of the air bag. First we'll install them finger tight then we'll go ahead and run them down. Next we're going to install the lower bracket onto the bottom of the air spring. As you look at the lower bracket, you'll notice the pre-drilled holes. We'll be using the holes that line up with the A side. Before we attach this to the bottom of the air spring, we'll want to put our carriage bolts into position, four of them, one for each corner of the bracket. Now we can go ahead and turn the air spring over and as we line up the holes we can attach the lower bracket. To secure the lower bracket we'll be using the bolt, split lock washer, and flat washer. Again we'll take our hardware and install it finger tight until we have them both in place and then we can run them down. We're now ready to install the upper bracket directly to the bump stop attacher points. We'll secure it with a 10 mm cap headed bolt. Using the round pre-drilled holes in the bracket that we pointed out earlier, we'll go ahead and thread the bolts directly into the weld nuts of the bracket. Once we have them installed finger tight, we'll go ahead and run them down to secure them. Now we'll go ahead and install the hardware that will secure the two upper brackets together. We'll use two 3/8 carriage bolts. It will fit in the rectangle slotted section of both brackets. Then we'll secure it with flat washers and lock nuts. We're now ready to go ahead and put the air spring assembly into position. As we set it into position we'll be careful that our carriage bolts coming out of the lower bracket don't pinch or interfere with the manufacturer's brake line. To make it easier to get it in place, I recommend to go ahead and raise the vehicle body up off the suspension or lower the axle to create more distance between the jounce bumper and the axle. As we put the air bag in position, we'll also make sure that the air valve faces towards the center of the vehicle and the lower bracket will face towards the spring pack. Line up the two upper brackets and let the carriage bolts go through the slotted holes. Once we have our hardware installed we'll go ahead and tighten it down. Before I completely secure it though we'll make sure that we adjust the air bag so it sits straight up and down as much as possible. You can see as it slid all the way forward, the air bag is extended here in the front and smashed in the back. As we rotate it over the axle more, it'll even out as much as possible. We want to sit as straight up and down, both forward and back and side to side. To adjust side to side, we'll move the lower bracket. It's already in a good place, we'll leave it there. We'll make sure that the upper bracket is pulled to the rear of the vehicle to get the lower portion of the air bag and the upper portion of the air bag lined up as much as possible. We'll then completely secure our fasteners. Now with our upper bracket secured, we're ready to secure the lower bracket. To secure the lower bracket we'll again use the flat washers and nylon lock nut provided with the install kit along with the axle strap. The axle strap will go through the front and back carriage bolts that we installed into the lower bracket earlier. Once we have our hardware installed finger tight, we'll go ahead and tighten down the carriage bolts which will secure the axle strap and our lower bracket to the axle. Note: As you tighten down the carriage bolt, we'll do it evenly front to back. With the air bag secure here on the driver's side, we'll move over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. Next we'll need to install our air line. The air line will have an inflation valve and two lines that will run to the air bag. For this application, we're only going to need one inflation valve, so the other one's just going to get cut off. Before I route the line, we'll need a place to mount the inflation valve. For this application we're going to make our own here that will secure to the side of the hitch tube. Using the Tow Ready no-drill mounting bracket part #18140. We'll use the worm gear clamp to secure the bracket to the hitch tube. Once we've secured the bracket, we're going to go ahead and use one of the pre-drilled holes and open it up to make our attachment point. We'll open it up to 5/16. Once we have the hole drilled out, we can go ahead and mount the inflation valve. To secure the inflation valve to our bracket, we'll use the provided nut that will thread on to the end of our inflation valve and this will set the length of the threads that will come through the bracket. Then a star washer, feed them through the valve where we'll add a flat rubber washer, a second flat washer, and then a second nut to secure it. Once I have it installed finger tight, I'll go ahead and run it down to secure it. Once we have it secured, we can go ahead and start routing our line. Keep in mind when routing your line, stay away from any moving component to steering suspension or excessive heat such as the exhaust. We're going to start by running the long line first which will go down the driver's side frame rail. Throughout the line, we'll use the zip ties provided with the install kit to secure it as necessary. We're going to follow the driver's side frame rail and manufacturer's wiring back to the vehicle cross member underneath the bed over to the passenger side and ultimately to the passenger side air bag. Be careful not to kink the line as you route it. I also need to save enough room to install a T in our line that will route to the driver's side air bag. As we route the line to the air bag inflation valve, we'll go ahead and mark the length of our line and then cut it. To cut it we're going to use the AIR LIFT air hose cutter part #AL10530. Using the cutter will allow us to get a clean square cut on the line without crimping it. To install the line into the inflation valve, we'll line it up, firmly pressing it into place then pulling back to lock it in position. I'll go ahead and finish securing the line. Here on the driver's side we'll go ahead and take the remaining piece of our air line, line it up with the inflation valve, again press it firmly into place and pull back to lock it in position. We'll then take the line and route it back towards the cross member where we routed the passenger side air line. Here we can go ahead and mark the length. We'll cut the line and remove the excess. Then using the AIR LIFT union T-piece with a 1/4 inch line part #AL21838. We'll cut the air line that we ran over to the passenger side and install the T. To install the T, one side again firmly pressing into place with the other leg putting the passenger side air line back together. The third portion of our T will get routed through the air line going to the driver's side bag. Once we have it in place, we're secure our line as necessary. Now with all the air lines routed, installed, and secured we can go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. This will help protect our air bag from the excessive heat of the exhaust. Once we bend the tabs, I'm going to go ahead and conform the heat shield a little bit to the tailpipe, hold it in position, then we can secure it. To secure it we'll use the worm gear clamps provided with the install kit. We'll go ahead and get the worm gear clamps onto the tailpipe, tighten them down a little bit to take up some of the slack, then we'll put our heat shield in place. Leave it loose enough that we can still move it as needed. With my clamps in place, we'll go ahead and hold the heat shield in position, install the clamps, and tighten them down. With our air bag system installed, we'll go ahead and apply air to the system and check for leaks. When checking for leaks we're going to use a soap and water solution and spray it on each one of the connection points and check for any air bubbles. Now we've checked for leaks, we're ready to hit the road. That does it for the install of our AIR LIFT LoadLifter 5000 air helper springs part #AL57295 on our 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup. .

Finished the install last weekend fairly smoothly. I jacked up one side of the truck at a time since I only had one jack. Had to put the jack on cinder blocks to get it high enough to engage the leaf spring front mount. One comment/suggestion for the installation guide. The only thing I struggled with was the parking brake cable. It was exactly in the way of engaging the bottom bracket to the axle. No matter how I moved the bracket it would not clear the cable. Then the light came on, release the brake dummy! Once the brake was released there was plenty of room to engage the assembly onto the axle. Of course, I did put some chalks on the front tires to keep the truck from rolling while I was underneath... No leaks, and it seems to ride much smoother than before. This Loadlifter worked excellent. Put a Lance camper at 2600 lbs. on my Ford F350 crewcab pickup. Despite the camper package option on my truck with extra rear leaf springs, it still pushed the bed end down and the hood side up in the air. Annoying side to side roll as well. The AirLift LoadLifter had very good instructions and was not difficult to install. Drilled five holes in the frame on each side to attach. Plenty of part options to make it a very good fit. Aired up the springs until the camper was perfectly level. Truck now drives level and considerably less side to side roll. This was well worth the price for the performance. 53242

First thing is e-trailer the best to buy from , hands down! Air lift 5000 not a great kit in my opinion . This is not my first air bag install , over 12 so far. Brackets look good , bags fit them good and hardware is ok. The problem is the upper bracket is 3/4k inch short of sitting against frame . Jounce cup is in the way , I tried to mock it up in place but hardware is to short . Jounce cup had to be removed for bracket to fit up to frame , it's welded on . This kit is not what I would average to install . I'll try a different manufacturer next time. 2009 chevy 1500 4x4 crew cab . 176164
