Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

Easy to install and keeps the rear from saging. Seems to help with sway control when pulling my 30 ft camper. Does make the ride a little harsher but worth it. Highly recommend. 595296

Great product, quick install. Fast delivery! Very pleased with product. Installed on 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500(new body style). Used Firestone air bags on last truck and always had to add air. timbrens are ready for work everyday without maintenance. 178862

Easy to install and works exactly how I wanted. 1.25” clearance w/o a load on them. After connecting my enclosed trailer to my Chevy Silverado 1500, they were flush. Truck drives w/o the front being ‘squirly’ and the rear saggy. Nice and level. 499823

I have waited till I had a heavy on the truck to review this product, it did a great job loaded. On a smooth road I can not tell any difference in the ride of the truck with no load. It is pretty stiff when you hit a big bump with no load. Installation was very easy. Overall I am very satisfied with this product. 504926

2017 GMC Sierra 1500

Easy to install. bumpers didn’t touch axle with boat attached. Loaded with fire wood and bumpers were in contact. when driving with fire wood load on truck the truck seemed to bounce on the bumpers and was a little rougher a ride than normal but the back of the truck did not sag like it did without the Timbrens installed. Not quit the same as helper springs but they didn’t jack the back of the truck up like the helpers, so I didn’t have to raise the front of the truck to Level it when empty. Ride is great when empty and I don’t have a load on it often so they’re doing the job. 502190

Very good product to replace stock bump stops that were worthless. Installed in driveway in about 20 minutes. Took longer to jack up truck and place jack stand in for safety, than to switch out product. Have 1/2-3/4” clearance. So it gives a truck ride.... but it’s a truck and it’s used as a truck! Very happy camper tower. Buy them, they're great! 553741

Ordered by telephone around 10:30 AM, product was delivered via UPS around 1:30 PM the next day. I had them installed that evening after getting home. I hooked up my travel trailer to my truck, everything leveled out, no sag. Can't wait to see how they do on the road pulling my trailer. 65385

Installed these Timbren bump stops on my 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and couldn't be happier! You must follow install directions exactly, meaning you must take all weight off the rear axle. I blocked the front wheels and then used my floor jack at the rear hitch to lift the rear off the ground. Once this is done you have the clearance needed to get tools in for the removal of the old and replacement of the new ones. Watch the short install video and you'll have all the info you need to accomplish this. Old GM bump stops look like "toys" compared to these. Great purchase. 277397

Comments

There should not be a gap when the truck is loaded. When the truck is unloaded the 1/2 inch gap is normal. It sounds like you need a 1/2 inch spacer part # TA25722-90P00

. The spacer is designed for lifted trucks to ensure the spring will engage when the truck is loaded.

Received yesterday (quick shipping!), installed today on 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD Crew Cab short box. What a difference between the Timbren's and OEM bump stop from GMC. Installed for towing large travel trailer. Used floor jack under rear hitch to raise up truck to get enough room for socket to install bolts. Use 10mm socket to remove OEM bolt & bump stop, use 17MM socket to install new bolt and Timbren. Very east installation process. 319774

Etrailer shipped very fast! Awesome people to deal with. The install went just as fast! Probably 20 minutes. I used a farm jack on the trailer hitch to bring both rear wheels up enough to have room to work. I put jack stands under the hitch for safety. Didn’t need to remove the wheels and they weren’t off the ground. Removed the old stop and attached the new ones. Simple! Test drove (in the rain) with nothing in the bed and never felt it till I hit a speed bump. Felt a little bump. I’ll be taking my RV out in a week. Looking forward to seeing what it will do for that. This was put on a 2018 GMC 1500 with big tow package. 581466

Second set of Timbren’s that I have purchased for a different truck. Prefer these over air bags. Things can go wrong with air bags like loss of air, air bag punctured. These Timbren’s are made of very hard and durable rubber that can hold massive weight. These took the sag out of the back end of my truck when I hook up the camper. Sway and drift in the front end of my truck when towing is gone now. I feel like I in control of my truck when towing. These even helped with sway during towing. Not too difficult to install. Once you have the truck lifted, it took about 10-15 Mins per side to finish the installation. etrailer had them shipping amdnat my door in two days! The right package arrived for my specific Chevy Truck. Priced very fairly too. Thanks etrailer! 522266

I ordered the product late one evening. When I received confirmation I noticed that I had reversed the the bill to: and ship to: immediately e-mailed CS as the office was closed. Very early the next morning I received a call from e-trailer and they immediately took, care of the situation and I had my order in two days, in Alaska! Have not yet installed the product. 210976

Easy installation. System works as advertised. No load ride is the same as without a load. Loaded the system controls and slows the amount of travel the suspension can travel.

I put these on a Z71 1/2 ton truck. I found a gooseneck horse trailer with living qaurters 33' long total and when the dealer hooked it to my in bed hitch the truck dropped about six inches told too much trailer for my truck they suggested air bags never heard of timbren I installed the timbrens went back to dealer this time test pulled you would think its a 3/4 ton truck now only 3" sag bought trailer pulled it home thanks timbren! great product saved me from bying a different truck dealer thinks it will start selling these! 47330

I was pleasantly surprised to find the installation procedure to be even simpler than the instructions sent with the "Timbrens". So easy even a cave man could do it. Same with the mirror extensions, very simple to install. I can't provide useful feedback (or a meaningful rating) regarding how well these products work. I haven't had a chance to use either the timbren system or the mirrors. My first trip with the trailer will be late September. I'll let you know when I get back....thanks. Dave G 99667

Comments

Unfortunately, I ended up returning the timbrens and replaced them with the Firestone Air Shocks. The Timbrens worked fine when hauling the trailer. However, without a load on the truck, the timbrens prevented the shock absorbers from engaging when needed and the resulting ride was very uncomfortable. The air shocks are the way to go if you only need the extra suspension on occasion. Thanks. dg

Added these Timbrens with two 1" spacers on each side on a 2011 GMC Sierra with a 2" lift. Fit great, easy to install. Was more work getting old bump stops off than installing the new Timbrens with spacers. I did need to get 2" longer bolts than what was included to complete the install, but that was to be expected. 488613

2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Caveat: I just installed these and have only road-tested unloaded. 1. As usual, etrailer filled my order quickly and accurately. 2. Installation was as easy as advertised. I did not have use of a lift and did it in my driveway. I did not remove the tires. I lifted one side at a time, blocked all other wheels and used a jack stand to back up my bottle jack. Hint #1: the higher you lift the truck, the more clearance you will have to work over the tire and insert your socket into the jounce stop and Aeron spring. Hint#2: The hole in the bottom of the factory jounce stop is small. Use a 3/8" drive 10mm socket. My 1/2" 10mm socket wouldn't go in the hole. 3. Installed, I ended up with a little more than 3/4" clearance. My road-test showed me that the Timbren SES has NO influence on unloaded ride unless you drive like an eedjit and hit speed bumps too fast (which I purposefully did.) Once you eliminate the 3/4" clearance between the SES and the axle you'll feel the extra stiffness right away, but it was not a shocking hit. I'd describe it as "authoritative." I'm happy. 566992

Very expensive product that does very little good for my truck. The gap between the timbrens and the frame is so large that it takes a very heavy load before they begin to assist. They end up acting like the factory bumpers on steroids. I can't pull my 410 pound tongue weight camper with weight distribution bars at night without being flashed by people who think I have my high beams on. Very disappointed. 315263

Tough to decide, Timbrens or air suspension. I opted for Timbens in part because of price, but also no maintenance, while knowing there might be a trade-off in fine tuning the ride. I installed the Timbrens on an '09 Silverado C1500 crewcab, pulling a '13 Springdale 247FWRLLS. Last measured pin weight was 1,120 lbs. Install time was 14 minutes, clock started after purchasing and cutting a piece of 4x4 to help jack up the frame, allowing access to the space. Before Timbrens, 2" drop in bed height after hitching 5th wheel. After Timbren install, 1" drop. Ride unhitched is mostly unchanged, the bigger bumps transmit a more firm feel as the Timbrens connect though. When hitched to the 5th wheel, overall smoother, more confident ride. I'm happy with the purchase. Thank you eTrailer.com for the fast and dependable service you are known for! Tom Round Rock, TX 54799

2009 GMC Sierra

I ordered these on July 4th (Wed) and received them on Friday. As always I got very fast shipping from etrailer.com. I installed these today on my 2009 Sierra 1500. I pull a 20ft enclosed trailer all around the mid-west and up and down the East cost. I've continually been adding things to the trailer so lately the rear of the truck has started to sag a bit when towing. This product seemed like a reasonable way to help remove the sag. I measured the truck in a couple of places near the back with the trailer hooked up prior to installation. After installation the sag was reduced by an inch to inch and a half which is what I was looking for. The truck is now very level with trailer attached. Installation was very easy as the mounting point is easy to get to. I did one side at a time by jacking up that side and removing the tire/wheel. I probably could have done it without removing the wheel, but this just made it that much easier. Remove one 10mm bolt on the original bump stop and then bolt on the new part. Tighten and you're done (well, I had to put the wheel back on, etc.) I did the whole thing in about 40 minutes. I haven't pulled the trailer yet with these installed, but I've already gotten the primary result out of the purchase which is to remove the sag in the truck when the trailer is attached. 47122

I installed this product to help level my 2014 GMC 1500/4x4 when towing a 18ft trailer. They work great and yes I would buy them again. However it will stiffing the ride of your vehicle with no load. If you do not use your truck a lot to carry or pull loads you may not like them. They work just as instructed by the company. Took me only 15 mins to install and a good looking product. 170614

Great product easy to install, took me longer to take the tire off and on than install the product. I hooked up the truck to the trailer and before it stood at 39 inches and when hooked up it dropped to 37 1/2 from the floor to the wheel weld. Overall ride is comfortable with an empty truck load. I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 and 24’ gooseneck weekender horse trailer. I just got the trailer and the guy I got it from recommended the Timbren’s to me. When I first dropped the trailer on my truck empty it squatted me 4.5” in the rear. The trailer weighs just under 5,000 pounds empty. When I first pulled the trailer empty I wasn’t sure about the Timbren’s they seemed really bouncy on my road. My road is not the smoothest road though. This past weekend I loaded 3 horses into my trailer and traveled about 1.5 hours away and I was blown away at how well my truck drove and handled fully loaded. With the Timbren’s my truck barely squats now. The trailer rode a hundred times better loaded with horses, which most big trailers ride bad when empty anyway. As far as driving with no load at all the truck rides just like normal. However if you hit a big hump in the road sometimes it will be enough to make it hit the Timbren’s and gives a little jolt. As far as recommending I definitely recommend these especially if you have a 1/2 ton truck and pulling a fairly heavy load. 656849

From Mickey Mouse to Mighty Mouse in minutes. Pulling a 7700lb travel trailer with a 2013 Silverado w/ tow package and h/d cooling. Even with W/D hitch truck was bouncing uncomfortably. The Timbrens were an instant fix. Dips in the road are no longer a problem, and I think the sway control in the hitch seems to feel more solid as well. Unloaded ride is unchanged except for really major dips (and Texas roads have a few). If you are like me and take your truck to places your Mom would not recommend, a good underbody wash and glasses to catch any falling junk during the install are highly valued 307541

The ordering process was simple and quick. The items I ordered arrived one week after I placed my order (Free shipping) Thank you etrailer. However the box that my items were shipped in was delivered open and in bad condition. Luckily all of the parts were still in the box and the parts them selves were fine. 692347

2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I installed these on a 2018 Silverado 1500 double cab 4x4. I tow a 28' 6,500 lb dry travel trailer with 650lb tongue weight. I have about 1.25" of clearance unloaded once i got the free .5" spacer from Timbren needed to get me there. You will definitely notice the rougher bump hits when not loaded with these. 1.25" of travel isn't far for the suspension to move before the flat surface of the ses slaps against the axle housing. This doesn't just happen over the biggest bumps either. It is noticable enough that i will be taking them out over winter when not towing my camper. They do help the towing performance though. They take away the floaty bouncy feeling of my truck but they do make for a stiffer ride. Overall a good option for the cost but they are not a fix all. 668437

2008 Chevrolet Silverado

I installed the Timbren jounce bumpers on my 08 Silverado to aid in trailer towing. They definately stopped any tendency to porpoise in conjunction with my Curt hitch. They also leveled out the combination truck and trailer. The only downside(?) is that the wife complains about the bouncy unloaded ride due to the fact the bumpers do not have a lot of clearance from the axle, she said it rides like a truck 8>). The install was fairly easy, it was harder to remove the old bumpers than it was to install the Timbrens'. 659714

Ask the Experts about this Timbren Vehicle Suspension

Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • Best Way To Level The Rear Of A 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • You are on the right track. As you will be adding a significant amount of weight to the bed of your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, I recommend using a set of rear suspension enhancements. As you mentioned, heavy duty bump stops (Timbren), leaf spring stabilizers (Torklift), and airbags (Firestone/Air Lift) are all excellent options to support the added weight on the vehicle's rear suspension. However, each of these options have a few differences and added benefits. A good option to...

  • Can Weight Distribution be Used with Suspension Enhancement on 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • With the use of suspension enhancement like the # TGMRCK15S and weight distribution the trick is to install the suspension enhancement kit first and then go through the weight distribution system setup process after so that you get the correct amount of spring bar tension per the new suspension setup.

  • Recommended Timbren Suspension Enhancement for 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4
  • For your 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4, I recommend the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TGMRCK15S. The 8600 lb rating is for just the spring's ability and they will not be used to that extent on your vehicle as other parts would fail first. You won't have that much weight on your bumper or in your bed when towing the 12K max as the trailer axles will carry much of that load. These springs will compress more as more weight is added and will become more rigid as they compress....

  • Can a Timbren Suspension Kit be Used with Weight Distribution System
  • Yes, you can use a Timbren system like the part # TGMRCK15S with a weight distribution hitch on a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500. If you have the WD system already you'll have to go through the setup process again after the Timbren install since you'd need less spring bar tension.

  • Rear Helper Springs for a 2002 GMC Sierra 4x4 1500 LD Extended Cab
  • The ideal way to prevent rear end sag when towing a trailer is to use weight distribution. Helper springs are designed for loads carried in the truck which is why they aren't the best option for this situation. But I will give you both options. First since you are interested in helper springs we can look at those first. The Air Lift springs # AL52203 could work but the trailer, if heavy enough, could still cause squat. A stiffer systems such as Timbren springs # TGMRCK15S (for the 3-door...

  • Will Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement Work on 2012 GMC Sierra with 6 Inch Lift
  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TGMRCK15S referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2012 GMC Sierra 1500. If the truck has a 6 inch suspension lift, you will just need to add some of the Timbren 1 Inch Spacers # A25723-90AH00. I recommend measuring the area between your truck's frame and axle where the factory bump stops are currently to determine exactly how many of the spacers will be needed. You will need to have between 1/2 inch to 1 inch between the bottom...

  • Comparing the Timbrens and SumoSprings for a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • I have two options for you to help with squatting while towing with your 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. These two options are the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TGMRCK15S and the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs part # SSR-209-40. The main difference between the two is that the Timbrens are made of a much more dense rubber so they will provide more support but the adverse effect of this is that they could also decrease the loaded ride quality. The SumoSprings...

  • The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TGMRCK15S and the SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs Kit part # SSR-209-40 are both great options to help reduce the body roll you are experiencing while loaded. Neither of these suspension enhancements will affect the ride of your vehicle while unloaded for the exception of the occasional bump or pothole. While loaded the Timbren springs will give you the most support and the SumoSprings will give you the most comfortable ride. For...

The best way to determine how many spacers you need for the Timbren Suspension Kit, # TGMRCK15S, for your 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 is to measure the distance from the underside of your frame where your bump stop sits to the axle directly below where the spring makes contact. • An "in-bed" hitch refers to a gooseneck or fifth wheel trailer hitch setup like you have in your 2018 GMC Sierra 1500. Since none of the air bag kits we offer for your truck are compatible with in-bed hitches your best option is going to be a jounce spring style of suspension kit like the # TGMRCK15S which fits if you do NOT have the Magneride suspension or the part # TGMRCK15MR for if you DO have the Magneride suspension. If you want to be able to manually control when the system engages then I recommend going with the TorkLift StableLoad # TLA7310. The Firestone Work-Rite kits like part # F8610 are much more comfortable than the Timbren kits but maybe they don't provide quite as much suspension support. • Both kits mentioned are confirmed fits for your 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 the difference being the rating for the two kits. The part # TGMRCK15S is for more heavy duty applications as it has a 6,000 lb capacity and the part # TUR100 is for lighter duty applications as it has a 3,000 lb capacity. These kits provide progressive resistance when under load to help stiffen and support your OEM suspension, especially useful for cargo loads in the bed, but they do not add weight capacity to the vehicle. For what you're experiencing, I'd recommend either an air bag system or a Aeon Spring set up that would replace the factory bump stop on your truck.
