Reduced rear axle sag with Timbren suspension enhancement

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your Chevrolet Silverado 1500 sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall vehicle handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above your rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the leaf spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Action of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's-side or passenger's-side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

Trailer swaying as it is towed behind a truck

Because your vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi) because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren SES

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Vehicle Suspension TGMRCK15S Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number TGMRCK15S. This is the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System. It's going to improve suspension, handling and safety. Providing additional support as needed so you always have a smooth, comfortable ride. This system is going to allows the leaf springs, plenty of movement while cushioning light loads. It does not affect the empty ride of the vehicle. It's going to become more rigid as more weight is added.

It's going to increase stability, providing better performance while hauling heavy loads. It's also going to help when it comes to reducing vehicle sag. Now, this system is going to works independently, side-to-side, so it's going to help compensate for off-center loads. It's also going to reduces body roll when swerving and turning corners. It does acts as a shock absorbers, so it's going to take the force of bumps and rough roads. It's also going to help extend the life of your vehicle's suspension system.

Now this is vehicle specific, so you can check out the vehicle list at the bottom of the product's product page to see if this is going to fit your particular year, make and model. It's going to includes 2 hollow rubber springs, vehicle-specific brackets and hardware for simple installation. It is designed to replace the axle bump stops on the frame and no drilling is required. It's going to offer a capacity of 6,000 lbs. Just be careful not to exceed the vehicle's weight-carrying capacity. It is designed to work with a suspension system that is in good working order. Now, you're going to see that it has the brackets, it has all the hardware that you need.

Then inside, each spring is actually going to be a washer. You can see that right there. When you install this, the easiest way that we've found to do this is to go ahead get the bolt started through the washer. Then what we can do is go ahead and put the socket on there. Then we'll just place it up through the hole.

It's going to come up like that. Then on top of the bolt, you would set the big plate or the vehicle specific bracket. You bring it through the location, the mounting location that needs to go through. Install the flat washer and then install the lock knot. Once you have that all tightened down, it should be all set to go. You'll be ready to get back on the road. That's going to do it for our review of part number TGMRCK15S. This is the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System. .

Caveat: I just installed these and have only road-tested unloaded. 1. As usual, etrailer filled my order quickly and accurately. 2. Installation was as easy as advertised. I did not have use of a lift and did it in my driveway. I did not remove the tires. I lifted one side at a time, blocked all other wheels and used a jack stand to back up my bottle jack. Hint #1: the higher you lift the truck, the more clearance you will have to work over the tire and insert your socket into the jounce stop and Aeron spring. Hint#2: The hole in the bottom of the factory jounce stop is small. Use a 3/8" drive 10mm socket. My 1/2" 10mm socket wouldn't go in the hole. 3. Installed, I ended up with a little more than 3/4" clearance. My road-test showed me that the Timbren SES has NO influence on unloaded ride unless you drive like an eedjit and hit speed bumps too fast (which I purposefully did.) Once you eliminate the 3/4" clearance between the SES and the axle you'll feel the extra stiffness right away, but it was not a shocking hit. I'd describe it as "authoritative." I'm happy. 566992

Very good product to replace stock bump stops that were worthless. Installed in driveway in about 20 minutes. Took longer to jack up truck and place jack stand in for safety, than to switch out product. Have 1/2-3/4” clearance. So it gives a truck ride.... but it’s a truck and it’s used as a truck! Very happy camper tower. Buy them, they're great! 553741

Easy to install and works exactly how I wanted. 1.25” clearance w/o a load on them. After connecting my enclosed trailer to my Chevy Silverado 1500, they were flush. Truck drives w/o the front being ‘squirly’ and the rear saggy. Nice and level. 499823

I have waited till I had a heavy on the truck to review this product, it did a great job loaded. On a smooth road I can not tell any difference in the ride of the truck with no load. It is pretty stiff when you hit a big bump with no load. Installation was very easy. Overall I am very satisfied with this product. 504926

I ordered the product late one evening. When I received confirmation I noticed that I had reversed the the bill to: and ship to: immediately e-mailed CS as the office was closed. Very early the next morning I received a call from e-trailer and they immediately took, care of the situation and I had my order in two days, in Alaska! Have not yet installed the product. 210976

Easy installation. System works as advertised. No load ride is the same as without a load. Loaded the system controls and slows the amount of travel the suspension can travel.

I put these on a Z71 1/2 ton truck. I found a gooseneck horse trailer with living qaurters 33' long total and when the dealer hooked it to my in bed hitch the truck dropped about six inches told too much trailer for my truck they suggested air bags never heard of timbren I installed the timbrens went back to dealer this time test pulled you would think its a 3/4 ton truck now only 3" sag bought trailer pulled it home thanks timbren! great product saved me from bying a different truck dealer thinks it will start selling these! 47330

Great product easy to install, took me longer to take the tire off and on than install the product. I hooked up the truck to the trailer and before it stood at 39 inches and when hooked up it dropped to 37 1/2 from the floor to the wheel weld. Overall ride is comfortable with an empty truck load. Second set of Timbren’s that I have purchased for a different truck. Prefer these over air bags. Things can go wrong with air bags like loss of air, air bag punctured. These Timbren’s are made of very hard and durable rubber that can hold massive weight. These took the sag out of the back end of my truck when I hook up the camper. Sway and drift in the front end of my truck when towing is gone now. I feel like I in control of my truck when towing. These even helped with sway during towing. Not too difficult to install. Once you have the truck lifted, it took about 10-15 Mins per side to finish the installation. etrailer had them shipping amdnat my door in two days! The right package arrived for my specific Chevy Truck. Priced very fairly too. Thanks etrailer! 522266

Easy to install. Once placed the order I sprayed the nuts in the old ones with rust bister. When the new one arrived the old one can off with no problem and the new ones went on just as easy. These are the best add on suspension helpers I have ever had on a pick up. I put 2 yards of compost in the back of my 1/2 ton Silverado W/T long bed and it rode level back to the house. These control sag when you drop on a trailer loaded or not. 35070

Added these Timbrens with two 1" spacers on each side on a 2011 GMC Sierra with a 2" lift. Fit great, easy to install. Was more work getting old bump stops off than installing the new Timbrens with spacers. I did need to get 2" longer bolts than what was included to complete the install, but that was to be expected. 488613

We have installed 3 sets of the Timbren rear suspension enhancement systems on 3 different fleet truck and they have all installed and worked great. We have them on 2 half-ton trucks 2014 Dodge and Chevy. Also on a 2012 Chevy 2500 crew cab with a big service box. Install took less then 20 minutes each and have helped when hauling trailers and fully loaded. As for Etrailer they have been great to work with, one of our orders was shipped from the Factory wrong, called Etrailer talked with Suzanne and had it fixed and the proper ones to me in 2 days. Bottom line, great service and great product. We will be installing on all our 3/4 tons next. 153202

Purchased to improve sagging on 2008 Silverado, 1500 when pulling a 25 camper. Tongue weight is 285 lbs. Mounting went well, improved pulling, but probably should have purchased air suspension to decrease sagging. It helped, but not to the level I am comfortable with for $200. 102871

Tough to decide, Timbrens or air suspension. I opted for Timbens in part because of price, but also no maintenance, while knowing there might be a trade-off in fine tuning the ride. I installed the Timbrens on an '09 Silverado C1500 crewcab, pulling a '13 Springdale 247FWRLLS. Last measured pin weight was 1,120 lbs. Install time was 14 minutes, clock started after purchasing and cutting a piece of 4x4 to help jack up the frame, allowing access to the space. Before Timbrens, 2" drop in bed height after hitching 5th wheel. After Timbren install, 1" drop. Ride unhitched is mostly unchanged, the bigger bumps transmit a more firm feel as the Timbrens connect though. When hitched to the 5th wheel, overall smoother, more confident ride. I'm happy with the purchase. Thank you eTrailer.com for the fast and dependable service you are known for! Tom Round Rock, TX 54799

Received yesterday (quick shipping!), installed today on 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 4WD Crew Cab short box. What a difference between the Timbren's and OEM bump stop from GMC. Installed for towing large travel trailer. Used floor jack under rear hitch to raise up truck to get enough room for socket to install bolts. Use 10mm socket to remove OEM bolt & bump stop, use 17MM socket to install new bolt and Timbren. Very east installation process. 319774

Easy to install. bumpers didn’t touch axle with boat attached. Loaded with fire wood and bumpers were in contact. when driving with fire wood load on truck the truck seemed to bounce on the bumpers and was a little rougher a ride than normal but the back of the truck did not sag like it did without the Timbrens installed. Not quit the same as helper springs but they didn’t jack the back of the truck up like the helpers, so I didn’t have to raise the front of the truck to Level it when empty. Ride is great when empty and I don’t have a load on it often so they’re doing the job. 502190

Installed these Timbren bump stops on my 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and couldn't be happier! You must follow install directions exactly, meaning you must take all weight off the rear axle. I blocked the front wheels and then used my floor jack at the rear hitch to lift the rear off the ground. Once this is done you have the clearance needed to get tools in for the removal of the old and replacement of the new ones. Watch the short install video and you'll have all the info you need to accomplish this. Old GM bump stops look like "toys" compared to these. Great purchase. 277397

From Mickey Mouse to Mighty Mouse in minutes. Pulling a 7700lb travel trailer with a 2013 Silverado w/ tow package and h/d cooling. Even with W/D hitch truck was bouncing uncomfortably. The Timbrens were an instant fix. Dips in the road are no longer a problem, and I think the sway control in the hitch seems to feel more solid as well. Unloaded ride is unchanged except for really major dips (and Texas roads have a few). If you are like me and take your truck to places your Mom would not recommend, a good underbody wash and glasses to catch any falling junk during the install are highly valued 307541

I was pleasantly surprised to find the installation procedure to be even simpler than the instructions sent with the "Timbrens". So easy even a cave man could do it. Same with the mirror extensions, very simple to install. I can't provide useful feedback (or a meaningful rating) regarding how well these products work. I haven't had a chance to use either the timbren system or the mirrors. My first trip with the trailer will be late September. I'll let you know when I get back....thanks. Dave G 99667

Comments

Unfortunately, I ended up returning the timbrens and replaced them with the Firestone Air Shocks. The Timbrens worked fine when hauling the trailer. However, without a load on the truck, the timbrens prevented the shock absorbers from engaging when needed and the resulting ride was very uncomfortable. The air shocks are the way to go if you only need the extra suspension on occasion. Thanks. dg

Very expensive product that does very little good for my truck. The gap between the timbrens and the frame is so large that it takes a very heavy load before they begin to assist. They end up acting like the factory bumpers on steroids. I can't pull my 410 pound tongue weight camper with weight distribution bars at night without being flashed by people who think I have my high beams on. Very disappointed. 315263

Outstanding performance. This product seems to lift the bed back to standard height, instead of sagging from too much weight in bed. It is worth every penny, some kits were twice the price, along with cutting, and drilling. I had these on in 20 minutes or less. 144465

2014 GMC Sierra 1500

I installed this product to help level my 2014 GMC 1500/4x4 when towing a 18ft trailer. They work great and yes I would buy them again. However it will stiffing the ride of your vehicle with no load. If you do not use your truck a lot to carry or pull loads you may not like them. They work just as instructed by the company. Took me only 15 mins to install and a good looking product. 170614

Ask the Experts about this Timbren Vehicle Suspension
Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • Best Way To Level The Rear Of A 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • You are on the right track. As you will be adding a significant amount of weight to the bed of your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, I recommend using a set of rear suspension enhancements. As you mentioned, heavy duty bump stops (Timbren), leaf spring stabilizers (Torklift), and airbags (Firestone/Air Lift) are all excellent options to support the added weight on the vehicle's rear suspension. However, each of these options have a few differences and added benefits. A good option to...

  • Recommended Timbren Suspension Enhancement for 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4
  • For your 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4, I recommend the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TGMRCK15S. The 8600 lb rating is for just the spring's ability and they will not be used to that extent on your vehicle as other parts would fail first. You won't have that much weight on your bumper or in your bed when towing the 12K max as the trailer axles will carry much of that load. These springs will compress more as more weight is added and will become more rigid as they compress....

  • Can Weight Distribution be Used with Suspension Enhancement on 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • With the use of suspension enhancement like the # TGMRCK15S and weight distribution the trick is to install the suspension enhancement kit first and then go through the weight distribution system setup process after so that you get the correct amount of spring bar tension per the new suspension setup.

  • Can a Timbren Suspension Kit be Used with Weight Distribution System
  • Yes, you can use a Timbren system like the part # TGMRCK15S with a weight distribution hitch on a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500. If you have the WD system already you'll have to go through the setup process again after the Timbren install since you'd need less spring bar tension.

  • What Stops Porpoising on Tow Vehicle that is Using Weight Distribution with Trailer
  • Most of the time when a tow setup is porpoising with a weight distribution system all you have to do is add a bit more spring bar tension to minimize the porpoising. With an Equalizer system you would need to angle the spring bars down further to add the additional tension. Suspension enhancement like the Timbren part # TGMRCK15S would help but you should be able to solve the problem with the WD system.

  • Helper Springs for a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 LT
  • For the type of loads that you are carrying in your 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 I recommend Timbren helper springs # TGMRCK15S. There is no maintenance required with these springs and they will prevent that rear end sag you are experiencing. And they have a limited lifetime warranty. Several of the guys here use these springs and they love them because they are so easy to use. Just install them and you are done. No need to worry about adding or removing air or possible leaks in air...

  • Tips for Reducing Sway When Towing Ice Castle Fish House RV Trailer
  • I looked up pictures of the coupler setup of your trailer and it would not be compatible with a weight distribution system since it basically uses a pole tongue and has a pipe that runs on top of the pole tongue as well. What you can do to fight sway is make sure that you have the trailer setting as level as possible when you are towing. (See help article on how to pick out the correct ball mount to allow this). Most sway is due to not having enough tongue weight relative to the...

  • Timbren Suspension Kit Recommendation for 2017 GMC 1500 Denali with MagneRide
  • We have just what you need for suspension enhancement that fits your 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 with the MagneRide suspension. You'd want the part # TGMRCK15MR which is specifically designed for the MagneRide trucks. The part # TGMRCK15S you mentioned is not the kit you'd need. And air bag kits can't be used with the MagneRide.

  • Can a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 Tow a 2015 Cougar Fifth Wheel Trailer that weighs 9,600 lbs
  • First thing you want to do is consult the owners manual of your 2013 GMC 1500 Sierra and be sure not to exceed the towing capacity listed there with your 2015 Cougar Fifth Wheel Trailer that weighs 9,600 lbs when loaded. From the research I did it looks like you would be over the capacity so I would not recommend you tow that trailer with your truck. Suspension enhancement like the Timbren System part # TGMRCK15S do not give you additional towing capacity. They only help your truck tow...

  • Difference Between the Timbren and Supersprings Suspension Enhancement Systems on a 2015 Silverado
  • While it will not hurt your vehicle, using two suspension enhancement products at the same time could render one product ineffective or will cause one system to be used at limited potential. For example, if you try using both the Timberen Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TGMRCK15S and the SuperSprings Suspension Stabilizer # SSA5MTKT, with a load in the truck, once the Timberen Springs engage the SuperSprings will not be doing much for the load. I do not recommend using both systems...

  • Is Weight Distribution Hitch Needed on 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 Pulling 5000-lb Toy Hauler Trailer
  • A weight distribution hitch, either with or without sway control, is called for under specific towing circumstances: if your trailer weight (GTW) is more than 50 percent of your vehicle's weight (GVWR); if the rear of your tow vehicle sags when the trailer is hooked up; or if your vehicle headlights point upward. These and other conditions that merit a WD system are detailed in the linked article. Weight distribution systems and rear-axle suspension kits do not address the same issues....

  • Timbren Suspension Enhancement on 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 6 Inch Suspension Lift Kit
  • The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System # TGMRCK15S is the correct kit for your 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500. They'll replace the factory bump stops. Since you have a suspension lift you're going to need spacers for them to work. We carry 1 inch, # A25723-90AH00 and 1/2 inch, # TA25722-90P00 spacers. You'll need to measure the area between your truck's frame and axle where the factory bump stops currently are to determine how much lift you need on the springs.

  • Options for Correcting Rear-End Squat of 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 While Towing Boat Trailer
  • To help with the rear end sag on your 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 caused by your boat trailer, you can use a suspension enhancement system. An airbag system such as the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2430 will allow you to customize the amount of help provided to the vehicle's suspension as needed for the load. I recommend the Firestone system because it will allow you to inflate the bags as needed to combat the rear end squat caused by the boat trailer. The air can be...

  • What is the Height of the Springs in Timbren Suspension Enhancement Kit # TGMRCK15S
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled Timbren kit # TGMRCK15S to take some measurements for you. The overall height of the spring is 5-1/8 inches and the overall width is 4 inches (diameter). Timbren does make some 1 inch spacers, # A25723-90AH00, that you could use if more height is needed. This may result in the need for longer bolts that you would need to obtain locally. Use grad 5 or better bolts.

  • Can Helper Springs be Installed on a 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 with Magnetic Ride Shocks
  • If the magnetic shocks are on the rear axle of your 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 1500 then an air bag product such as # F2430 will not work because it is meant to mount above a leaf spring stack and the shocks are likely in the way. I have linked a video showing installation and a link to the instructions for you to compare to your truck to determine if there would be a fit issue. The magnetic shocks are supposed to adjust themselves according to what is required to provide the best ride....

Instead you would the Firestone Work Rite system part # TGMRCK15S as this is a jounce style kit that will fit the Denalis.

  • Timbren Suspension System Recommendation for a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500

The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System - Severe Duty # TGMRTT15S is designed for service vehicles only so it would not work for you. The # TGMRCK15S would make an excellent choice for a suspension enhancement system for your vehicle. • Suspension Enhancement Product Recommendation for 2015 Silverado 1500 Towing 8500 lb Travel Trailer
  • The SuperSprings product will somewhat help with the bouncing you're experiencing, but I'd recommend that system more for preventing rear end sag and sway. For what you're experiencing, I'd recommend either an air bag system or a Aeon Spring set up that would replace the factory bump stop on your truck. Either type of system has its advantages and disadvantages. An air bag system allows you the ability of infinite adjustment by adding or removing air from the system. However, you'll...

If you want to be able to manually control when the system engages then I recommend going with the TorkLift StableLoad # TLA7310. The best way to determine how many spacers you need for the Timbren Suspension Kit, # TGMRCK15S, for your 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 is to measure the distance from the underside of your frame where your bump stop sits to the axle directly below where the spring makes contact. • Reducing Rear End Sag on a 2015 Chevorlet Silverado 1500 4x4 when Carrying Heavy Loads
  • SuperSprings like # SSA5MTKT are really good at stabilization, specifically side to side and body roll, but for sagging there are better options. For your 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 I recommend Timbren springs # TGMRCK15S. These springs are going to prevent sagging when carrying heavy loads in the bed and will also help with stability by decreasing body roll. Both systems actually do a nice job at maintaining a smoother ride when the vehicle is unloaded. • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LD 6.5 Foot Bed
  • First, I recommend checking your owner's manual for your Silverado's maximum towing capacity. From what I found, Chevy has determined that fifth wheel and gooseneck trailers should not be towed with the 2005 Silverado 1500 Crew Cab. For example, The owner's manual for the Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, 4 wheel drive, 5800 V8, with an axle ratio of 4.10 lists a maximum towing capacity for the vehicle of 8,400 pounds. So as to not damage your truck, I recommend making sure the gross towing weight...

  • Inverting the ball mount is the first step in getting the trailer level. But if the trailer is level when you have it hooked up to the truck and fully loaded, there is no need to invert the ball mount. Over time a truck rear-suspension leaf-spring will wear and need to be replaced, the more you tow and the heavier the load the faster this will happen. The closer you are to your truck towing weight capacities the faster this happens. Over time, when the leaf-springs wear they stretch...

  • Comparing Timbren Kits GMRCK25S & GMRCK15S for 2003 Silverado 1500 ZR71
  • Timbren kit # TGMRCK25S fits the 4WD version of your Silverado 1500LD while kit # TGMRCK15S fits the 2WD version. These kits provide progressive resistance when under load to help stiffen and support your OEM suspension, especially useful for cargo loads in the bed, but they do not add weight capacity to the vehicle. Rear-end sag from pulling a travel trailer is best handled by a weight distribution/sway control system rather than a set of jounce springs. A properly-tuned WD/SC system...
