Video Transcript for Pilot Automotive Vehicle Lights - Reverse Light - PL-807 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number PL-807. This is the Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light. It's going to feature a clamp-on design so it does not require any drilling for the installation. This is going to be your white 55-watt H3 halogen flood light. It's going to shine when you drive your vehicle in reverse. It's going to make it safer to back up your vehicle and it's also going to help make your trailer connection in low light conditions or in the dark.

All you have to do is simply install the hardware. It's going to come with different pieces when it comes to the brackets but it's a simple clamp-on installation. It's going to provide a nice universal fit. The included hardware is going to fit C-shaped rear bumpers, thick folded bumpers and vertical lip 00:00:43 bumpers. There are going to be different brackets included to fit large or small and different bumper configurations. All your mounting hardware is included.

It's also going to come with some included instructions. That's going to take you through the installation process for your particular application. It's also going to include your quick-splice connectors. That's going to let you tap into the truck's reverse light signal or function. It's also going to include your fuse holder that's already in line and pre-wired in as well as the included, looks to be a 15-amp fuse. Your brackets, your clamp bracket is over here as well as an extension bracket.

You're going to get a black rubber gasket strip. You're going to get three small zip ties. This is your hardware for the clamp bracket, hardware for the extension, quick-splice connectors, terminals. You're going to get your optional frame grounding hardware right there as well as an included tool. It's a nice light heavy-duty construction. It's going to be weather resistant and corrosion resistant.

The steel brackets are going to feature a nice black powder coat finish so they're going to last a long time. Then the housing here on the light itself is a nice durable strong plastic housing. When it comes to the dimensions of just the light, that's going to give us a measurement of 5 inches long by 3 inches by 1-1/2 inches. I want to go ahead and hook it up to our external power source. That way you can see what it looks like with power running to it. Your red wire's going to be your power wire, black wire is going to be for grounding. We're going to go ahead and hook it up. These wires are going to measure about 23-1/2 inches long. We'll go ahead and turn off our overhead lights. That way you can see how bright the light is. The light sends out a nice beam. Again, this is a white 55-watt H3 halogen flood light and it really sends out a nice consistent signal. It shines really bright so that way you can safely back up the vehicle and you can work at the rear of your vehicle in low light conditions and be able to see pretty clear. That's going to do it for our review of part number PL-807. This is the Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light.

I saw this lamp on a video and it looked like what I needed for my project. I couldn't use the included mounting hardware as I don't have a bumper as such so I had to fabricate what I needed. If you have a bumper the hardware makes this an easy installation. Here's a couple of pics. 770766

This a high quality light that can be installed in a number of positions. My only negative is that light could be a little brighter since most rear windows have some tint to them which reduces the effectiveness of the light 747541

This product is advertised as a bumper mount. It does not fit the bumper of the F350. You would be lucky if it fit over an S-10 bumper . The lights themselves seem to be high quality, but like I said the mounting system is poor . 691139

Easy to install and bright enough to back trailer at night. Much better and brighter than LED's. Slim design keeps it from looking unsightly. It has performed better than i expected and the clamps have remained tight for over a year now. I would purchase again, if needed. 391993

Excellent product for the price. I installed a long cord on mine to be able to dismount it and use it as a trouble light. You can hard wire the light into the existing harness for reverse function only, or wire it to a trailer plug to simply plug it in. Put a switch in the plug, and you can toggle between reverse function, off, and the vehicle 12 volt system. 212920

Light is excellent. Attaching to bumper is a nightmare, not enough hands to hold all parts in line while tightening. Would not tighten` down, could wiggle it loose easily. Just knew it would come loose in a car wash. SOLUTION !! Keep the flat extendtion plate and attach it to light ( throw other parts in trash). Use a 3inch " C" clamp and simply clamp it to bumper. Works great, takes only minutes, clamp is not visible. Holds very secure. 194863

The light was pretty easy to install. The wires need to be about a foot longer would help though. Seems pretty bright. Will have to see how they hold up. 178344

The Bully lights perform as advertised, a very bright flood of light. Installation could not have been easier using the provided clamp mounts resulted in a quick, rock solid, an professional looking install. Hook was equally simple with everything needed provided. The only implement I can think of would be for the wire leads to be about a foot lounger but that certainly was not a , show stopper. Etrailer's service was great. Items were in stock and were at my door in two says. 167571

I purchased two of these and the lights/brackets seem very well made and the bracket is very secure. Three "dings" though (1) I would like to see a bit more wire included - it comes with just 2 feet. I had to splice another two feet in to get it positioned where I wanted it on my van's bumper and I suspect most folks will need to add wire as well. Extra wire is easily bundled up with a zip tie but splicing it takes time, extra wire, etc. (2) One of the (silver/hex key) bracket bolts used to hold the light in position stripped out on me w/o using that much torque. (3) The plastic boxes that hold the fuse have a very weak cap - I had to zip tie them both closed. e-trailer is great to order from though and I would buy the light again. 144828

this is a nicely designed product. It clamps on very easily, and a pair of them looks nice and gives very bright light. it is simple to install. I have a brand new truck and didn't want to tap the wiring harness-so I simply wired the lights to a trailer plug so that they come on when the truck is in reverse. 135316

I bought an eight dollar female receptacle plug that would plug into the rv plug pre-installed on my truck from the local hardware store. all you need toknow is which is ground and which prong is for the reverse light. it is easy to find out with a 5 dollar electrical tester.I used some taps to connect the two lights together, such that the ground wire and the hot would be taped together and passed through the outside of the plug. I had to lenthen the wires so that I could connect them together. you wire up the plug, and simply plug it in like a table lamp. if it is in your way, you could just unplug itor even remove both lights and the harness you just made hope that helps you. I am a pharmacist and not an auto mechanic or electrician-just happen to know basics, and how to apply it to 12 volt circuits.

  • LED Reverse Light Recommendation for 2005 Toyota Prius
Since you have a Prius I would strongly recommend going with an LED reverse light that will draw considerably less than the Halogen part # PL-807. For that you'd want the LED light part # BUL10CB with the bracket # BK70BB and the grommet # A70GB and you'd have a setup that draws only .28 of an amp per light. You'll also need a wiring pigtail like the part # A49PB. This could be ran to the reverse light circuit of your vehicle without overdrawing it.

  • After Installing Additional Reverse Lighting Factory Reverse Lamps are More Dim
The reason the factory reverse light dims when the # PL807 illuminates is because both lamps are sharing a power supply circuit. The supply circuit can only provide so much power, and when you add another lamp to the circuit, the amount of power available to be delivered to each lamp decreases.

  • Can Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light # PL-807 Directly Plug In to Flat 4-Pole Trailer Connector
The Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light # PL-807 is designed for hard-wired installation by connecting to the reverse light circuit of your Chevrolet pickup. It is not intended to connect to a 4-pole or 5-pole flat trailer connector. Installation is simple. You will connect the black (ground) wire to a clean bare metal surface on the vehicle or you can use an existing grounding point behind one of the tail light assemblies if one is available. The fused (red) power input wire will splice...

  • Can Halogen Bulb Lights be Converted to LED Type Bulbs
Bulb types can often be changed as long as there is a compatible equivalent version and so long as the new type does not cause fit or temperature issues. You could not go from an LED to a halogen since the waste heat generated by halogen bulbs is fairly substantial and far more than what an LED light's housing might tolerate. The Pilot Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light # PL-807 uses a standard H3 type halogen bulb like # P250003W. We do offer halogen-to-LED upgrade bulb kits from Putco...

  • Solution for Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light Install Where Reverse Light Circuit is Overdrawn
You are overdrawing your reverse light circuit but I have a solution. You will need an isolation circuit like part # TR118665. You will run the reverse light circuit of your vehicle to the center post of this solenoid. One side of the solenoid will run up to the positive post of your battery and the other side will run to the part # PL-807. This will allow the lights to be powered directly from the battery but only on when the reverse light circuit is active.

  • Wiring Pilot Automotive Bumper Mount Back-Up Lamp to Plug Into Trailer Connector
The Pilot Automotive # PL-807 is intended to be wired directly into the reverse lamp circuit of a vehicle, so they illuminate when the vehicle is placed in reverse. This being said, it would be possible to rig up two of the lights so they would plug into your 7-way trailer connector. You'll need a 7-way trailer end connector, like part # PK12706, and wire it up as shown in the provided diagram. The red power wires would connect to the reverse light terminal, which is the center pin,...

  • Installing the Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light # PL-807
I may have a solution for you, however, we do not have a different version of the Bully Bumper Mount Backup Light, # PL-807. If you want, you can simply bolt the light directly to any surface you want to mount the light on without using the clamp. The clamp simply prevents the need for drilling directly into your vehicle. If you are not worried about drilling, you do not have to use the clamp.

  • Can a Trailer Reverse Light Function Be Hardwired to a 2010 Ford Escape Trailer Wiring Harness
A typical 4-Way trailer wiring harness does not have a reverse light function so what I recommend is using powered converter # 119177KIT. This harness does require splicing into the tail light wiring but it is a powered converter so it will only put a minute amount of draw on the tail light wiring. The bulk of the power for the trailer lights will come from the battery connection. You can run this by a technician at your Ford dealer to determine if they think it would cause problems....

  • Why Does the Bully Backup Light Turn Off Immediately When Vehicle is Put in Reverse
It sounds like the circuit you have tapped into to power the # PL-807 doesn't have the amperage rating to power it. A 55 watt bulb like what this light has will draw 4.5 amps. What I would recommend you try instead is tapping into the reverse light circuit of the trailer connector at the rear of your 2014 Ford F-150 Lariat. This will be the center pin of the 7-way connector.
