Video Transcript for Thule Passage Trunk Bike Racks Review - 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

Today on our 2016 Subaru Outback wagon we're taking a look at the Thule Passage 2 trunk-mount bike rack. That part number is TH910XT. Now we already have our bike secured down, so we're first going to show you how we do that. We have two cradles in place with three straps, two on our frame and one as our anti-sway in the back. We're going to start by releasing those. Now we can pull our bike off and set it off to the side. With our bike out of the way, we can take a few measurements.

First is going to be overall what we're adding to our vehicle. It's going to be about 18-3/4". Now a great thing about this rack is that it doesn't add as much as a hitch rack would. We do have the option to actually rotate those arms down. We're going to pinch here at our two silver pieces, wiggle those arms back and forth until it comes loose.

Now we're only adding about 8-1/2" to our vehicle. As for how we secure our trunk-mount down, we have six straps altogether, two over the top portion of our hatch, two to the sides above our taillights, and two underneath the bottom portion. Now to adjust this to fit our specific vehicle we have our fit dial here on the side. We do have it set to nine as per the Thule guide. We do want to double check that. We also have these foam pads here at the bottom and at the top that are going to prevent any scratches or abrasions from our rack onto our vehicle.

We just want to make sure we clean underneath where our foam pads are so we don't cause any of that scratching. One other thing to note is that we won't be able to use that rear wiper blade. Now I did mention that fit dial on the side before. That's going to allow us to fit different style vehicles, so you can always have one trunk-mount rack for your entire family. That's going to be our completed look at the Thule Passage, part number TH910XT, on our 2016 Subaru Outback wagon.Speaker 2: Here it is on our test course.

We'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Next we're at the alternating speed bumps, which we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Finally, we have the full speed bumps, where we'll see the up and down action, which is just like driving out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway.

This bike rack is super! I purchased it for my college age daughter. She used it alot. It is easy to set up, it is easy to take off the car. It carries the bikes nice and tight and safely. It doesn't mark up the car. My daughter recommends this bike rake to all her college friends. They actually borrow it now and then. My daughter is a tiny person and this rack is easy to install, handle and hang bikes. 730632

Product works great. Two bikes are secure. What is really nice is that when the bikes are off, you do not have to remove the rack to open the Outback hatch back. 666527

Made a last minute decision to purchase this bike rack so that my daughter would have more room in her SUV for a move to Charlestown, SC. As promised by Kelly, it arrived the evening before her departure with only a $7 or so 2- day delivery charge. Although a little concerned, it was at my house in a little over 48 hours. Had a little issue with the mount due to the bike's unusual frame, but the design of the rack and the accessories provided more than allowed for a successful and safe installation. Wish I had a pix of her SUV loaded with the roof bag on top, the bike on the rear and just enough room for her to slide into the car. But she's already in her new home with a bike rack for future use that loaded so securely that it barely moved when I pulled on it. As an added measure, I did velcro the wheels to the bike frame to immobilize any extraneous movement. This is a quality product that is very reasonably priced. 149784

Good product that folds when not in use, but I don't like the side and bottom straps. They are not separate straps and they use a much poorer design compared to the top 2 straps to tighten them down. Top 2 straps use a simple unlock with thumb, pull to tighten, then release thumb and automatically locks straps in place. Side and bottom straps are a loop through design and require you to pull and tug on the other end to tighten. Also top straps when using the clamps on the trunk pulls it too far up causing about a finger gap. So I re-read the instructions and choose to re-route the strap through the clamp to go under the trunk like a support. That prevents my trunk from excessive gap. I had already contacted etrailer for a return but found out the return shipping alone was almost the cost of the product so I decided to keep it and use it for the time being. So either get a different design trunk rack, or just go with a hitch. Its better that way. I just swapped mines out for a hitch considering the price of the hitch is similar and more sturdy. 134157

Thank you for the comment Qhua! If you do experience any difficulty in mounting the carrier with the top hooks, as you mentioned you can re-route the top clips to be used as a in clip this is our Versa-Clip design that will allow for multiple mounting methods. We also appreciate your feedback on the strap design. As the top straps are the most load bearing, we have used a different tensioning system to ensure trouble free operation. Thanks again!

The e-trailer service is exceptional. I had trouble mounting this rack on my 09 VW CC and they provided technical assistance. Due to the fit issue I returned the rack and purchased a hitch mount set-up. They were very helpful in assisting with the return and alternate purchase. In this age of poor internet customer service they are great. If it is not right they will work with you on a good solution. 120397

I return the product because it did not fit tight on the trunk and cracked the plastic Ridge on the trunk.I have a trailer mount that works excellent.

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan

I just assembled it and put it on my Dodge Grand Caravan last night. Took about a 5 mile ride with it this morning to see how it was doing. Seems to be fine. I've tightened all straps as tight as possible. The side clips seem to have a little play along the sides of the hatchback door but everything appears and seems to be solid. Even with the straps tightened all the way, you can still move/pull on them a bit, because they are nylon, so even though they seem to be secure now, I will check them at different intervals to see if they are retaining their hold. The sway bar option was a nice addition and I also cut some Velcro straps to tie down both wheels and the handle bars from swinging. Another nice surprise was that I was still able to open my rear van door with the bike rack attached. I would say, all in all, this is a great sturdy design and as long as I use due diligence to watch for any loosening of the straps over time, I should be just fine! 216686

Comments
One year later and no problems at all. I think the longest distance I have traveled with the bike on the rack has been about 25-30 miles, mostly around to local biking areas. I may be taking it a few hundred miles down the road coming up in the future as their are some out of state locations I want to go to. I will not hesitate to do this or worry about any issues since this rack has shown itself to be so dependable. I usually leave it on the van for a few months at a time and when I have had to remove it and put it back on, it has been quite easy and fast. After having the rack on for a long period the rubber foam cushions can get pretty flattened where they sit up against the window and back of the van, The foam will reform back out about 25 of where it was flattened to, so probably at some point I may need to replace that foam but other than that I have no complaints and have been extremely satisfied with this product.

Mercury Milan

The Thule Passage bike carrier was exactly what I was looking for. It is the perfect size for 2 adult bikes. The rack is easy to setup and fits on to my Milan securely. My boyfriend helped me the first time but it is simple enough for me to put it on my car alone. The last time I ordered a bike carrier online it was big and bulky. Once I had everything out of the box and started to put it altogether, I found a paper at the bottom of the box saying that model did not fit 3 vehicles and one was mine. I was a little discouraged and now apprehensive when ordering another rack. But this carrier was exactly what it said it was and there were no surprise papers at the bottom of the box. Great choice if you're looking for a carrier for 1 or 2 bikes. 81310

A clamp-on adapter bar should do the trick. It attaches to the handle bars and the seat post to provide that flat bar. I have added links to Thule's bar, part # TH982XT

and all the bars we offer.

The package looked as though it had been used as a soccer ball (see pictures). Fortunately, the rack seems to be in good condition. Key word "seems". Another thing, I ordered on a Tuesday evening with 3-day shipping (which cost extra). It was shipped at around 6:00 a.m. Wednesday according to an email. So I'm thinking I'm going to get it Friday. Makes sense. 3-Day, shipped Wednesday early (day 1). Should be here Friday (day 3). No such luck. Another email stated that because of the holiday it wouldn't arrive until Tuesday September 5th. I won't be ordering from this company again. 430012

2006 Scion xA

The Thule Passage 2 fit well on my Scion xA (2006) and carried two road bikes with aplomb on a 5-hour drive at ~70 MPH in the rain. The mounting brackets for the bikes required adjustment to space out the two bikes further apart; this took a lot of force to move but I was eventually able to get them positioned so the two bikes, one with an XL and the other an XS frame, could be mounted properly. The bottom and side straps and clips feel kind of wobbly but in practice they held up perfectly fine. 310845

Was fairly easy to figure out and put together. Mounting it to my 2010 Exuinox was a little time consuming doing it alone, but all in all it was worth the time. Held our two bikes very well. I would recommend this product to others looking for a more economical way to transport bikes other than having to install a receiver that hitches to a bike rack. 180118

We have used an older Thule rack on Honda Accords for over 10 years. The current TH910XT, recently purchased for a Toyota Corolla, is definitely a step up. Very simple set up instructions and a very stable mount for our two full sized touring bikes. 221862

The rack is used for police bike patrol and overall is satisfactory for this duty. My only issues are the straps that hold the rack to the vehicle have a tendency to loosen up during cornering and need to be tightened at least twice during a shift. Also where the bars that hold the bike attach to the rack itself seem a bit "fragile". I'm sure this is because they can be turned down to lessen space when a bike is not on it. I understand we use this item a little more roughly than your usual customer and at times need to drive a little more aggressively. On a positive note, I am able to quickly attach and detach the bike and haven't had it fall off over the past year. I hope this helps. I am pleased with the rack overall. 402828

2015 Ford Edge

Ordered online, it shipped the same day. Received it 3 days later. There is a little assembly, but, pretty simple. It took me less than 15 minutes to install and no tools were needed. It is adjustable to be used on many different auto types, but, the instructions were very clear about how to adjust it to fit my 2011 Ford Edge. I have used it twice so far to transport my bike. There are a couple of items that are inherent in the design, not a flaw, but, you need to be aware of them. First, you can't use rear window wipers. Second, the back-up alarm goes nuts because it registers a bike less than 6 inches behind you (I tolerate it for the few seconds it takes to back out of my driveway or out of a parking lot). Third, there is a little flexibility, it is held on with straps and clamps, not bolts, so, it bounces a little when you go over bumps or make sharp turns, however, it holds the bike fast to the frame and stays on the car. I use mine to transport my bike on short trips around town to bike trails. On a long trip I would suggest checking that the straps remain tight from time to time during the drive. 173351

2010 Subaru Forester

I’ve had the Thule bike rack for about three weeks now and have the following comments: 1. Order and delivery from etrailer was extremely great as I received the item within a few days of ordering. 2. Assembly of the bike rack was very easy and took a very short period of time. The instructions provided with the item were easy to follow. The online video on assembling and mounting the rack is also very good should you want to also follow that to ensure you did everything correctly. 3. The bike rack was mounted on a 2010 Subaru Forester and fit very well. It is secure and you can easily open and close the hatchback with the bike rack installed without the rack becoming loose. I’ve had the rack mounted the whole time and have had no issues with it becoming loose. 4. With a bike mounted on the rack, the bike is held very secure by the three straps and does not move around too much with the key being to secure the front tire to the bike frame using the enclosed strap. I’ve only traveled on city streets with bumps and turns so far with the bike mounted, but don’t anticipate any issues with high speed travel on the interstate due to the solid build of the rack and the way it secures a bike in place. Overall I am very satisfied with the product and would recommend it to others. 544653

-- comment by: Sandy - 09/02/2013

2008

Yes it will, but it will probably need an adapter bar. Without an adapter bar, the bike either will not fit, or will sit far off balance like in the picture from Melony. An adapter bar provides a full size, level tube from which to hang the bike. Thule offers one, it is part TH982XT.

The product is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. The one thing that made it a little difficult is my wife's bike does not have a crossbar and that made it very difficult connecting it. With a lot of effort, we were finally able to get it connected, and it was a little tougher on the return trip but it held the bikes in place. I later found out that the company does have an adapter for the type of bike I had problems with. I wish this would have been displayed as a possible alternative, depending on one's bike. 555286

I ordered the Thule TH910XT trunk mount bicycle carrier for my 2015 Hyundai Sonata and it fits great! It comes in handy when I bike far away from home, on vacation or bringing the bike in for repair. It easily folds up and fits neatly in the trunk if so desired. It sets up quickly, holds the bike snug and keeps it from swaying back and forth towards the license plate which keeps the pedals away from the car. It holds another bike if desired and keeps the bikes from hitting each other. Great product...I'm glad I found it on etrailer.com. 157179

The best option for a hitch would be the Draw Tite # 24963 which is a confirmed fit and will work well. I prefer this over the Curt equivalent as it does not require a stabilizer strap when carrying a non-supported load like a bike rack. I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp part # SA4025F. This unique system uses 2 vacuum cups with ratcheting straps that attach to the rear window of your vehicle and can carry 1 bike by the handlebars. I have attached...

Trunk-mount bike racks confirmed to fit your 2015 Toyota RAV4 are shown on the linked page. The lowest-price options are the Yakima FullBack 2 Bike Carrier # Y02634 and the HalfBack # Y02636 which will work with or without a spoiler.

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for 2016 Nissan Rogue with Spoiler
Those shops weren't lying to you. Our trunk rack manufacturers do not have a fit for the versions of the 2016 Nissan Rogue that have a spoiler. Instead a hitch rack would be the best option. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked our demo and install guys to name their favorite, most easy-to-use bike racks and this one showed up in nearly everyone's top three. Check out the review video I attached...

  • Trunk Mount Bike Carrier Recommendation for a 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek
For your 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek, since it has that top spoiler or trim piece at the top of the hatch, the only trunk mount carrier I recommend is the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top rack # HRF2 for 2 bikes or # HRF2-3 for 3 bikes. These racks have additional upper arm pieces that move the top straps up and over that spoiler so no weight is put on it (since the spoiler is not meant to support weight). I have included a link to a video that shows how it works. If you will be carrying...

  • What Are the Best Non-Roof Bike Rack Options For a 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback?
Your best option if you're wanting a bike rack that is not roof-mounted for this vehicle is either a trunk mounted or hitch mounted system. If you're interested in a hitch mounted system, you'll want to pick a trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch, part # 24914. This will allow you to attach any Class I hitch bike rack behind your vehicle, These racks only carry up to 2 bikes, making this a solution best suited if you're looking to add flexibility to your...

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2015 Honda Fit
As long as you do not overload the Thule Passage part # TH910XT (35 lbs per bike), and you keep the painted surfaces of your Fit clean as well as the pads of the bike rack you would do no damage to your vehicle with this rack. A much better option for you might be a hitch mounted option since it wouldn't contact your vehicle at all. For a hitch you would want the part # 24920 as it has been confirmed as a fit. Since you plan on carrying any womens or alternative framed bikes without...

  • Comparing Thule Passage and Yakima Hangout Bike Rack for 2016 Toyota Highlander
Both of the bikes you mentioned have fairly standard frames so either trunk rack would fit them easily. The Yakima Hangout # Y02637 and the Thule Passage part # TH910XT are basically each manufacturers version of the same bike rack. Since the reviews are noticeable higher for the Passage I'd go with it. It fits both of your Highlanders as well.

  • Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2008 BMW X5
There are indeed trunk mount bike racks that will fit your 2008 BMW X5. The Thule Passage # TH910XT and # TH911XT are listed as fits. But I recommend going with the Hollywood Racks Over-The-Top rack # HRF2 for 2 bikes or # HRF2-3 for 3 bikes. If there is any type of spoiler at the top of the hatch then this is the only rack that will not put stress on it. It is also so versatile that it will fit many other vehicles should the need arise. If you will be carrying any bikes that do not...

  • Thule Bike Rack Fit and Comparison for a 2010 Subaru Outback
Yes, the Thule Passage 2-Bike Rack, # TH9009XT, will fit your 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon. I have attached a review video of this bike rack on an Outback for you to check out. The Passage is Thule's economy bike rack with fewer options than their higher end models such as the Raceway Pro, # TH9001PRO. This doesn't mean that it is a low quality bike rack. Thule makes excellent bike racks and this particular rack just lacks certain of higher end models. The main features of the Passage...

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2015 Volvo XC60 without a Roof Rack or Trailer Hitch
Other than the roof and a hitch the other way to carry bikes on your 2015 Volvo XC60 would be a trunk/hatch mounted carrier. There are 1, 2, and 3-bike carriers available. The only 3-bike model is the Yakima HalfBack # Y02635. I have linked a video review of this rack for you. If you need to carry more than 3 bikes I recommend going with a trailer hitch and using a hitch mount bike rack. And should you ever need to tow a trailer or use a cargo carrier for extra storage space you will...

  • Will the Thule Passage Trunk Mount Bike Rack Fit a 2013 Honda Fit Sport
The spoiler is the problem on the 2013 Honda Fit Sport. It is possible you can use the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top rack # HRF2 or # HRF2-3 but these would be the only options for trunk mount racks. I recommend going with a trailer hitch, # 24826, and a hitch mount bike rack such as the BikeWing # LGA54FR as an alternative to a trunk mount rack. I have linked a video showing an example installation of the hitch for you.

  • Trunk Mount 2-Bike Rack for a 2019 Mini Countryman
At this point in time (August 2019) the Thule Passage # TH910XT is not confirmed as a fit for your 2019 Mini Countryman but I do have a similar solution for you. The Yakima HalfBack # Y02636 is a similar alternative to the Passage and I actually think you would like this option more even if the Passage did fit because it uses 4 straps instead of 6 so it is easier to install and it has more of a stylish look over the basic bare-bones look of the Passage. To add locks to this bike rack...

  • Will the THULE # TH910 Fit on a Toyota Prius
The Thule Passage 2 Bike Carrier Trunk Mounted Bike Rack, Th910XT, will fit the 2004 - 2009 Toyota Prius. When using the Thule Passage on these vehicles the rear window wiper cannot be used. If you have a 2001 - 2003 Toyota Prius the Thule 910 will not fit because the top straps cannot be mounted directly to glass.

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2011 Hyundai Accent GL Hatchback
Because your Hyundai Accent has that trim piece with the third brake light in it at the top of the hatch, a trunk mount bike rack should not be used. That part of the car is not designed to support the stress associated with a trunk mount bike rack. The safest way to carry 2 bikes on your Accent hatchback is to install a trailer hitch, # 24795, and use a hitch mount bike rack. This is a Class I trailer hitch so you must use a bike rack that is Class I compatible. I recommend the Swagman...

  • Trunk Mounted Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Honda Civic Sedan
Yes, I checked with Thule and the Passage 2 part # TH910XT has been confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Honda Civic Sedan so it would work well. I attached an install video that shows this rack being installed on a similar 2012 Civic as yours. • Most Recommended Trunk Mount Bike Rack for 2015 Subaru Forester
The trunk mounted bike rack I recommend most often is the Thule Raceway, part # TH9001PRO, which is compatible with your 2015 Forester. The thing that makes the Raceway stand out from other trunk mounted bike racks is the way it attaches to the vehicle. Rather than 6 straps that need to be tightened and loosened in order to install or remove the rack, the Raceway uses 4 retractable cables that can be tightened or loosened with the twist of a knob. The adjusting knobs can be locked, which...

  • How to Carry Bikes on a 2014 Ford Fusion
There is a way to carry bikes on your 2014 Ford Fusion but a trunk mount carrier cannot be used because the vehicle is unable to support the weight at the point where a trunk mount carrier would attach. The safest way to carry bikes on a vehicle is with a trailer hitch and hitch mount bike rack. It is also lest costly then going with a roof rack and it is easier to load and unload bikes compared to a roof rack. If you need to carry more than 2 bikes I recommend Curt Class II trailer...

  • What Trunk Mount Bike Racks are Recommended for 2016 Mazda CX-3?

These include Yakima's ZipStrip mounting system, including an anti-sway mount. The Fullback models are black, while the halfback models are a dark grey.
