Video Transcript for Malone Hanger Trunk Mount 3 Bike Rack Review

Speaker 1: Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Malone Trunk Mount Hanger 3 Bike Rack, part number MPG2139.The Malone Hanger 3 Trunk Mount Bike Rack is a fast and easy solution to carry your bikes from one place to another. It can carry a wide variety of bikes ranging from your mountain bikes to your alternate frame bikes to your kids bikes and to road bikes as well.In some cases, when loading your bikes, especially those with alternate frames or kids bikes, you may need to use an adapter bar to have it fit properly on the bike rack. Malone does carry these, and you can find them on etrailer.com's website. It holds your bike in three locations. We're gonna have two straps up at the top tube. Our third point's gonna be the strap around the side here, and that's gonna be referred to as our anti-sway cage, which is gonna keep your bike from moving too far back and forth and causing bike to bike contact. The cradles are padded and have these grooves in them so that the cables on your bike will fit inside those instead of getting crushed up against your frame once it's been initially installed. The cradles are stationary, meaning they can't move back and forth or anything like that, but they are movable to accommodate different mounting styles.

At the end of both of our arms, one of them has a reflector for better visibility at night, and on the other, we have this slot. This is gonna be your integrated cable lock to lock the outermost bike to the bike rack. This also comes with a stability or load strap to wrap around all three bikes once they're installed to keep them in place while you travel as well. This also comes equipped with quick release hubs here and here. The hubs at the top, that's to help you adjust it to whatever vehicle that you may have, and the ones at the midpoint here, this is to fold your bike arms out and back down once you're finished using them. This will also assist with those close quarters situations such as parking or putting it in a garage and you don't want to take off the bike rack. The frame is made from an 1 1/4" steel tube construction, so it's very strong and durable.

And it also has movable pads at the top and at the base to protect your vehicle from scratches and abrasions. It's held in place by six straps that wrap around your trunk or you hatch. We have two up at the top, two at the side, and two at the base or two underneath depending on your style of installation. And the hooks are rubber coated, again, to help protect the finish of your vehicle. And for a nice added touch, it does have these hook and loop straps to hold the excess of your straps once you have everything tightened down. When not in use, everything folds flat for storage.

It has a carrying capacity of 33 pounds per bike and a limited lifetime warranty. When comparing this with other products, the two others that come up are gonna be the Hollywood Racks Expedition 3 Bike Trunk Rack, part number HRF6-3, and the Yakima HalfBack 3 Bike Rack, part number Y02635. Out of all three of these, the most economical is gonna be the Malone. However, for ease of use, that's actually gonna go to the Yakima. While both the Hollywood and the Malone have the center hubs to adjust your bike rack to where it's needed, the Yakima is a little bit more user friendly as it's simply just a dial that you turn to adjust it to where you need it.As far as versatility is concerned though, both the Hollywood Racks and the Yakima are gonna take this as they're a little bit more adjustable when it comes to trunks with spoilers on the back. And as far as locks are concerned, only the Malone comes with locks included out of these three. Now that we've been over some of the features of the bike rack, let's go ahead and show you how it installs.

We have everything laid out on our table that's gonna come with your box. Just save the instructions. We're gonna have the pads that are gonna hook up to the bike rack, and we'll have our two hooks here for alternate mounting positions. We'll have our stability strap, keys for our integrated cable lock, and the straps themselves for our bikes. Before we can place this on our vehicle, we'll take our pads, and we'll snap them around our bars here like so. And repeat this for the top portion too with this bar. To make it easier to get to the top bar, we'll flip out these handle here. You can see the teeth separate. And we'll actually fold it out and then close up those bars, and now we can put on those pads. Now, before we place this on our vehicle, we're gonna wanna get our hooks in place, so we'll loosen up the hook and loop fastener here, unroll it, and come to our cam buckle here, open it up by pushing up the tab and pulling out. We're gonna do this for all of our hooks. Now, let's set our bike rack into place, making sure the padded portions are what's making contact with the vehicle here at the base as well as our rear windshield here. Then we'll take our hook and bring it up and attach it up at the top here. And we'll do that on both sides, then we'll tighten it down so we can hold it in place. And now, we'll attach our other straps. At our midrange, we're gonna go just to the side here, pull that tight, pull it as tight as we can get it. Now with our bottom hook, you have a couple options here. You can just go to the base and hook it up and tighten it down as we have been with the other hooks, or you can remove the strap completely and thread through the included hook you see here, all the way, place it through the point here, and tighten it up, place it through our buckle as we did before. You would find an attachment point that can work underneath the vehicle, attach our hook end to that, and then tighten it up as necessary, such as to our hitch here or to a tow hook underneath. With everything tightened down, next we'll take up our excess of our straps and put it into the hook and loop strap up at the top. And we'll do this for all of them. Now, we'll get our bike into the loading position. To do that, there are two handles on either side of our arms here. You pull those out, and again you see these teeth come open just like we did up top. We'll fold it out to our desired location and tighten it back down.Next, we can start installing our straps for our bikes, and we'll do this for all of our connections. Now, bear in mind all of these have two choices to go from as far as which bike you're gonna be using or which configuration works best. We'll just be putting them in place for now, and we may change this later when we load up our bikes. And also, you don't have to worry about these moving because these are in fixed locations. Before we actually start loading up the bikes, I'm gonna put all the cradles toward the inward position here, and this is gonna make loading a little bit easier and also keep the straps out of the way as much as we can so we don't have to fight around stuff to get our bikes in place. All right, now we can grab our first bike, set it in, and figure out where our cradles are gonna go. Push it up making sure that our anti-sway cradle here will be going around the stem. We'll go as tight as we can. Then we'll strap up our top tube. Our first bike is in place. Now we'll grab our other bikes and do the same. One of our final steps is we're gonna into the end here with our integrated cable lock, unlock it, wrap it around the frame of our outermost bike, put it back into place, and lock it. Now they cannot remove the front bike, therefore they can't remove the others, and everything is secure.Next, we take our stability or load strap to put around the frames of our bikes, tighten that up, and then we'll take it out on our tests course and show you how it looks. Here it is on our test course. We'll start by going through the slalom. This is gonna show us the side to side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Next, we're at the alternating speed bumps, which we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Finally, we have the full speed bumps where we'll see the up and down action, which is just like driving out of a parking lot, garage, or driveway. And there you have it for the Malone Trunk Mount Hanger 3 Bike Rack, part number MPG2139. Speaker 5: All right, so what do we think about the Malone Hanger 3 Bike Rack Speaker 2: I think it's a very good rack if you're wanting to just transport bikes every so often. A hitch rack, in my opinion, is always the best way to go if you're gonna be doing a lot of bike transport. But this one, if it was just a few times a year or something like that. Speaker 3: Pretty compact for having the space for three bikes. Speaker 4: It also seems to have . it had the same features as the higher end trunk mount bike racks, I feel like. You've got your anti-sway and then your hubs for getting it to fit very nicely on your rear hatch. One thing I noticed is that the anti-sway has that padding, which this is the first one I've seen like this, so it just kind of adds a little bit more cushion to that seat post tube. Speaker 5: I like the fact that it has the cable lock. That's normally something you see on some of the higher end stuff, and the fact that this has one is a great feature. Speaker 2: So, you lock the bike at the end of the rack, so you always have to have a bike on the outer cradle to be able to lock I ton there, but even if you just had one bike, you can move it to the outer one when you get to your destination and lock it if you we're going to a store or go get coffee or something like that. The cradles are actually pretty hard compared to a lot of the racks I've used, although they do have a lot of little grooves in them for the cables and things so that it doesn't damage those or get the cable crushed between the bike and the pad and cause a scratch on the bike frame. Speaker 4: Yeah, one thing that I noticed, it could be a plus or a minus, they do pivot, but they can't adjust along the arms. So, if you had a larger bike or something that sticks out further than the rest, you can't leave them in place and adjust the other two or vice versa. Speaker 5: It's sort of a double edged sword. They're not gonna move when you don't want them to, but at the same time you can't move them if you needed to. Speaker 4: You can't customize the bike spacing. They're all separated. Speaker 5: And there are other bike racks that they're selling that have fixed cradles. What do we think about installation on a vehicle This is six straps. Speaker 4: It's not going anywhere. Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little more cumbersome. Some of the bike racks only have four straps or whatever with hooks. Speaker 4: The pads that clamp on the bars so they don't damage your rear window or your bumper, they're pretty stiff, but I don't feel it's gonna go anywhere. I don't think it's gonna cause any damage. It's nice that you can adjust them. I don't know if it's gonna interfere with a rear wiper blade, but the fact that you can adjust the spacing of the bumpers, it could be helpful. Speaker 5: I had a Thule Raceway, and it used four cables with hooks to install, and I always thought that was really easy compared to a six straps, but really the only time six straps is, not really a pain but an issue, I guess, is the first time you go to mount it. Then after that, it seems to be a lot easier because you got everything in the right place, and it's just a matter of tightening it. Speaker 4: Some people leave them on, so they feel that they only have to install it once, and then they just check their straps. And on that note, having the keepers, I've dealt with many trunk mounts, and you've got six straps, and when you go to tighten it down, you're trying to figure out the best way to tie it or hide it, and you don't want to cut it because then it frays. Having these keepers, definitely a plus. Speaker 5: So, I'm on etrailer.com, and I'm looking at trunk mount bike racks. Why would I buy this one, or why would I choose not to buy this one Speaker 2: I think one of the reasons to buy this one is if you're not an everyday rider or you just ride once in a while, this is a great economical choice, and it will all fold flat to store in your trunk and out of the way when you're not using it. Another reason is because you can secure your bikes at the back of the vehicle. Speaker 4: I have to agree. When you're in the market for a trunk mount bike rack when you see this one, you're like, well shoot, this has a lot of the same stuff as a premium trunk mount bike rack. It's got your anti-sway, cable lock, everything. It's fairly large, in my opinion, for a trunk mounted bike rack, but it seemed pretty solid. I think you're gonna be pretty happy with it. Speaker 3: It seems pretty all inclusive when you get three bikes on the back. Speaker 4: Looks like it's gonna fit most bikes, so I couldn't see any reason why you wouldn't want it if you we're looking for a trunk mount. Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree. I think only maybe somebody who's really going on a long haul cross country might want to take something a little higher end, but for most applications, I think this is gonna do the job. Speaker 2: And what reasons would there be not to buy this rack Speaker 4: It's a trunk mount rack. Speaker 2: That's probably the number one. It's a lot easier crosstalk 00:15:21. Speaker 4: And you won't be able to get into your rear hatch as easily to get out your helmet, gloves. Speaker 2: Yeah, they do have to come off. That's for sure. That and the cradles are a little hard. It's funny that the cradle that you put the bike on is harder than the cradle that's actually the anti-sway. In most cases, it's the other way around. Speaker 4: And constantly having to check your straps, making sure it's not getting loose. Quite a few reasons. Speaker 5: Yeah. All right. Thanks guys.

Very sturdy and easy to install. Very happy with the product. Used 2x for 4 hour drives from Ithaca and back. Minor suggestion...provide thin rubber squares to place between strap hooks and vehicle for extra protection from possible scratching. 771818

Really nice bike rack. Fits a 2011 Outback with no issue. I was hesitant to get a rack that hangs on the back of the car because I was worried about scratches/damage to the finish etc. This unit comes with nicely coated strap hooks and the bumpers seem to protect well. Obviously you want to install the rack when your car is clean to prevent surface dirt from marring the finish. The rack is easy to position and holds three bikes well. The bike straps are sturdy yet flexible and the fold down option is nice when the rack is not in use. Overall very pleased. 672129

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

With two bikes on the rack for an extended highway road trip, it's basically impossible to keep the rack still, it moves around quite a bit leaving scuff/blemishes on the car. My car is brand new so needless to say I was disappointed to say the least. I did tighten the straps as best I could, without ripping them them off completely and re-tighten throughout my trip but the problem remained. Also the two top straps rub on the paint leaving scuff/blemishes in the paint. Also several of the rubber straps that hold the bike onto the rack came off several times throughout the trip. I'm not sure this rack is meant for highway speeds for long periods of time. I'm overall Disappointed. I don't like to give negative feedback.Looking to put on a hitch mounted rack. 570303

Comments
I do recommend a hitch mounted rack for longer trips at highway speeds. If you need a hitch for the 2017 Subaru Outback Wagon I recommend etrailer hitch part # E98847. This class 3 hitch offers a tongue weight rating of 600 lbs, it will work well for carrying bikes on a bike rack. The etrailer hitch is matte black and corrosion resistant so it will look great on your brand new Subaru. For a hitch mounted bike rack I recommend the Thule hitching post pro part # TH934XTR. This bike rack will carry 4 bikes and features a built-in anti-rattle bolt that secures the rack to your hitch and reduces vibration and noise.

Looks like a well made product and is simple to put together. However, I am unable to use it as the top of the vertical support (which curves back towards the vehicle) hits the hatch on my 2018 Range Rover HSE. 690033

We are infrequent users, but this is exactly what we were looking for. It carries all three of our bikes. It is easy on and off. After some adjusting it holds a male mtn bike, female hybrid (I still recommend the adapter, but when I load it I don't have to tie into it), and male kids BMX easily and securely. It folds down pretty easily, so we still have access to the back hatch on our 2013 Ford Escape. It came with the locking cable for the bikes and lock for the hitch bolt. We previously used a strap on rack and it was nice, but didn't feel as secure. Every time I break it out for a trip my wife and I both remark about what a great buy it was and how happy we are knowing we don't have to worry about the bikes on our trips. 691441

I was surprised by how heavy the product is. It was shipped a box within a BOX. The outside packaging was a Heavy Duty Box. So it came without so much as a scratch. The manual and videos on the website were right on and very helpful in advance of my receiving the product. It was pretty easy to assemble and attach to the hitch. I was able to attach my bike to it with ease. I love the etrailer website and the customer experience that you get. Every item has pictures, videos, and other useful information, Great Job! 719762

I have to say that the design elements of this rack are extraordinary and the price is $100 less than Thule et al. Even better is that they are manufactured in my home state of Maine. 546622

Very happy with the quick delivery. Quite solid, easy to set up. One problem and we should have asked first, cannot put the female/girl bikes on the racks. We had the same problem with our last rack. If there is a remedy to this, please let us know. Otherwise, the rack is sturdy, solid and easy to operate with the two male bikes. 820613

Review from a similar Hanger in Trunk Bike Racks

This is the first hitch mount rack I've purchased and I'm using it on a 2019 Volvo XC60. I often get confused when a product has a few dozen stellar reviews, then a few that are critical, so can only say that for pluses: I am impressed with it's heavy, solid construction, stability on the road, ease of mounting to the hitch mount (a hitch lock is included which is nice), ease of mounting and dismounting bikes and general design, including a built in light cable lock that might discourage a 'casual' bike theft while stopping by a coffee shop. Seems like I got a good one. A couple of niggles: there is a lot of threading and unthreading on the couple of knobs that allow the rack to drop down into the folded position, and to drop the entire rack down to clear the open tailgate. I'd say a 3-4 turns should be sufficient -- you do have to spin them for a bit. The straps are stiff plastic 'ratchet' types with no padding. I'm going to put some stick-on foam under them so they don't abrade bike frames when in motion, and they do stick up straight when undone so I'm getting the idea that keeping them in their ratchet buckles while loading bikes is a good idea until you need a bike secured. They are rugged and I doubt if they will break. Overall, it looks like the rack will last a long time and do the job well. 820530

Everything was perfect, got it delivered sooner than I thought. It was pretty easy to assemble, I have used it once so far with one bike it was easy to use and I felt very comfortable driving down the road with the anti-sway. Also loving the locks that come with it. This is my first hitch mount rack but so far I am really glad I bought it! 665098
