Video Transcript for Yakima BedHead Truck Bed Mounted Bike Rack Review

Hey, guys, Matt here at etrailer.com. Today we are going to be going over the Yakima BedHead. This is the truck bed mounted single bike rack, part number YO1132. We will go ahead and take it out on our test course and show you how it performs. The Yakima Bed Head allows you to carry 1 bike in the bed of your pickup truck. It easily clamps onto the bed rail and provides easy loading and unloading of your bike. I'm going to show you how to install it.

First thing you need to do is remove the skewer and removing the skewer, you can see this hole here at the top. Removing that skewer exposes that Allen bolt which is the insulation hardware that's going to secure it to the bed of the truck. So we'll go ahead and twist this piece off, set that aside and you can see when I remove that skewer, you can see that Allen bolt here on the side. Set the skewer aside as well. Now it does come with the included Allen wrench and what we'll need to do is slide the Allen wrench through that hole and you can see here at a different angle, loosen that up, and this bracket here shaped as a "J," this is what's going to go on the underside of the bed rail and when you tighten this down it's actually going to pinch real tight and put pressure on the bed rail which is going to keep this real nice and secure.

So with that done, you can see that the 2 pieces can be separated. Now there are rubber pads on the bottom, which is really nice, especially if you truck doesn't have any rail caps or a spray in bed liner, this rubber is just going to help protect the surface of your truck. So now that we've got these pieces separated, the Yakima logo will go facing towards the outside of the pickup truck. So once you find a good location, usually I like to stay up towards the cab, especially if you've just got 1 bike, you can get out of the driver's seat, come over, loosen up the skewer and pop the bike off. So we'll set this like so. Again you can see the nice rubber pads contouring to the cap.

Then I'm just going to loosen up this bolt, again, just to make sure we have enough room to get along the underside. Another thing to keep in mind when you are choosing a location to install the bike is that if your truck has a drop-in bed liner, there are some plastic tabs that actually stick out through the underside, so sometimes there won't be a smooth surface under here for you to get this piece flat up against the bottom. Now that we have this screw loosened up, I'm going to start by inserting, I'm just going to call this the "J" of the rack. Start the bottom part of the "J" underneath the bed rail, pinch this forward, insert the Allen tool through and then when we thread this down, it's actually going to go through that threaded hole in this part of the rack. So when we tighten it, this "J" part is going to come up and pinch tightly against the underside of the bed rail and it's going to create a really nice hold. Now that we've got everything all tightened down, we will go ahead and replace our skewer.

This bike rack is a 9 mm skewer and is made of an anodized aluminum that's going to help resist rust and corrosion. It has a carrying capacity of 1 bicycle and comes with a lifetime warranty. Now we'll go ahead and load up a bike. Now here we'll be loading up a road bike. You can see that we can quickly set it into the bed of our truck and then we'll slide the forks down onto the skewer. Now a heavier, mountain bike might not be as easy, but still you have the nice convenience factor where all you do is basically just set it in the truck and then to remove it, you just slide it out and then be able to lift it right out. So with the forks of the bike onto the skewer, we'll just tighten this black piece down here and then clamp it down. Now you want to be careful not to clamp it down too tight, especially if your bike is made of composite material. Now that we've got our bike all loaded up, we'll go ahead and take it out on our test course and show you how it performs. Now that completes today's review of the Yakima BedHead single bike truck mounted rack, part number YO1132. .

  • Do You Carry a Truck Bed Bike Mount That is Not Permanent and Does not Require Bike Wheel Removal
  • We do have a bike rack system that will fit your needs. Topline 2 Bike Bed Carrier, part # UG2500. It comes with the parts for 2 bikes, but you can omit the 2nd bike portion. It is not permanent, it simply clamps to the bed and then around the frame of the bike. We have a video reviewing the rack and showing a run-through of the installation that you may find helpful. I have added a link to it below. We also have the Thule Insta-Gater, part # TH501 that sits in the bed and is held...

  • Carrying a 1960s Beach Cruiser Bike in the Back of a Truck
  • This item is made for bikes with the quick release on the front wheel. On your 1960's Beach Cruiser the front wheel is most likely mounted with nuts on the ends of the axle, and it would require tools to remove and replace the tire each time you wanted to mount the bike in the truck or remove the bike and reinstall the front wheel/tire. A better option for you may be the # UG2500 Topline truck bed mounted bike carrier which does not require removal of the front tire. If that doesn't...

  • The Yakima BedHead Single Bike Truck Bed Mounted Rack, Part # Y01132, requires a mounting surface that provides a place for the mounting bracket to grab. The attached image shows a cross-section of a typical truck bed side rail and how this bracket fits. I have highlighted in yellow the edge of the truck side rail which holds the bracket in place. The bracket needs to reach up behind this surface of the mounting location to secure the carrier. If your F-150 bulkhead provides a place...
