Video Transcript for Swagman The Claw Truck Bed Bike Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Swagman claw fork mountain bike carrier. Part number: S64700. The Swagman claw is a perfect way to secure and transfer one bike on the back of your truck or your trailer. Although it only holds one bike you can use as many as your truck bad or a trailer can handle. You just pick up additional claws with the same part number. It uses a quick release nine millimeter skewer that allows for rapid loading and unloading. It will work with bikes that use disk or standard brake systems. The open design here at the center allows you to pass a cable lock through so you can further secure your bike.

With plenty of options here at etrailer.com for a cable lock go ahead and pick one out. It's made of a durable construction so it's going to hold up and stand up the ailments 00:01:00 for a long period of time. It has a weight capacity of 35 pounds and it features unlimited lifetime warranty. Now that we're done with the features I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. This can really be mounted anywhere in the back of your pick up truck bed or on your trailer. You can mount it here at the bulkhead, on top, down in the truck bed or on the side rails. If you're looking for a less permanent solution some people prefer that. They can just mount it to a peace of wood at the back of their truck as we're going to do here today.

I got two by ten matched to the width of my truck. What does come with its own hardware We got two bolts, two flat washers and two lock nuts. Since I'm just going to be putting it into the wood I'm going to put my own heavy duty hardware. These are just going to screw down into the wood. If you're going into the bed or any other metal surface you can use the hardware that came with it. In positioning and mount there are few things that you might want to know. The holes center and center are five and a quarter of an inch apart and they are also a quarter inch in diameter. If you choose to provide your own hardware, like I am, you'll just want to be sure and match that size.

Also when you position you want to be sure and leave enough room for your handle bars so they don't come in contact with your cab or anything else that you might have upfront here. We're going to position ours right in the center about six inches back. Once we have it set we can just take our hardware and then run it through. Once we got one in we can check and make sure that it's still straight and then put the other side in. I just have to point out real quick that I also went ahead and just removed the skewer to make installation easier, to run my hardware through. Now as it is in the position let's go ahead and grab our skewer and put it in. We need to remove the nut off the side here and when we insert this we can put it in either side. We're going to put it this way because this is going to work best for us and we'll put the nut on the other side and start getting that close. We want to be sure we leave enough room for our fork to sit in our skewer like this.

Let's grab our bike. When we're bringing our bike we want to make sure that our front tire is removed as our forks will be sitting down on the skewer. We'll drop it in place, like so, and then we can come down here and tighten it up. The idea is to build a close of the skewer and have it squeeze the fork nice and snug so it doesn't move. What you'll need to do is you come down here and just kind of tighten it up, one end. You can do this end over here or you can just simply move this one around here. Once we get it tighten it up we can just check it over time to make sure that it's going to squeeze our forks. We don't want to over tighten it because it could damage them. You just want it nice and snug. When it is in position we can then close it up. As you can see it's nice and solid. It's not going anywhere. Now we're ready to hit the road. Now when the inaudible 00:03:56 loaded up let's go ahead and take it on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course let's go ahead and go onto our slalom. This is going to show side to side actions such as going around the corners or a basic maneuvering. Then I'm to our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show a twisting action such as going over pebbles or uneven pavement. Then finally onto our solid speed bumps. This is going to show an up and down action such as pulling in and out of the driveway or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look at the Swagman claw fork mountain bike carrier. Part number: S644700.

These are very nice fork cleats, powdercoated steel and neatly welded. I did need to drill them to 3/8" mounting holes as my bed rail takes 3/8" hardware and these come with 5/16". Once that minor step was complete I was able to bolt them to my bed rail easily. I would recommend these over aluminum fork cleats to anyone putting together a custom bike rack. 725480
