Video Transcript for Topline Truck Bed Mounted Expandable Bike Rack Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Topline Truck Bed Mountain Bike Racks. Available as a single or all the way up to a four-bike capacity rack. The part number we're using today is UG2500. This is the two-bike version. At the end of our main arm, at our first bike, we have a fully-articulating hand, that allows us to connect into the seat post or also onto the top frame tube of our bike. It's rubber padded on the inside, it's going to give us the protection that we need for our bikes, we're not going to get any kind of scuffs or scratches. Each of our arms are going to be a full aluminum arm, it's going to keep it nice and lightweight, but also stay very corrosion resistant, that way it's going to look good for a long time. The rack is designed to clamp right onto the bed rail of our pickup truck.

Just right underneath there has an eye bolt here that helps to hold this in place but also gives us a great connection point for our 74-inch long security cable. As you can see it comes with the rack, can easily be fed through our two bikes here, come back and make a connection point, securing both our frames and our tires to our truck. Now this is the two-bike setup, so we're going to have our one main long-arm and then we have an addition arm here in the middle. Now this is a two-bike rack, as you can see it's holding two-bikes, another one of this would then turn it into a three-bike and then one more of those would turn it into a four-bike for us. Giving us a lot of room to expand our rack based on our needs. Now that we've gone over the features, let me show you how to get this installed, as you can see we've got the large eye bolt here, we just want to loosen that up, that's going to allow what they call our clamp to come out. We want this to be loosen up to slide underneath the bed rail of our pick-up. You can see it's got a nice angle back so it's going to get a good grip on just that lip area.

We'll bring it up around the underside of the bed there, as you can see that's going to slide in right there and butt in nicely right up against the edge. Now, we do have our rubber gasket, now our rubber gasket should be installed right up here in the corner, just pull the tape off the back, stick it right into position. That helps it get a good grab on our bed rails. Once we've got it in position here, where we want it on our rail, we'll tighten up one of our nuts just a little bit there, to give us a little bit of space, and then we'll tighten our eye bolt down. We'll feel that make a good connection. Tighten an eye bolt down and then we need to run our second nut right down against that one and tighten it down. Tighten that down just slightly to make it a good solid jam nut, right up on there, it's holding in place great.

We're now going to grab our longer curved piece, slide that right into position here, andt hen we can tighten down that rack T handle slightly just to hold it in place for now. Then we can load up our bike, we'll undo the black, large black wing nut here, or knob, allow that to tilt down the way, and that will allow us to open up our clamp. We have our bike here in the bed of the truck, we're just going to bring it and fit this right around the seat post, what's great about this rack is whether you're securing it to the top frame to there or the seat post, it doesn't matter. You've got your options, the clamp is designed to fit a bar that's up to an inch and a half in diameter, so you want to keep that in mind, a lot of times, this tube is going to be a little bit wider than that so the seat post is going to be here in your top option there. Now we'll just tighten down the large nut here. Until that gets good firm hold on our bike. We're also going to take this opportunity to secure our front tire, this should be in the forward position, where just our rear tire, so we've got the weight sitting directly down. The strap will come up through the metal.

Back down or outside there. Let's give that a tug to secure it. Hold everything nice and steady as we're heading down the road. Now for loading of the second bike, we're bringing our add-on, open the clamp just like we did on the first one, put it around and then tighten it down around the seat too. While we're doing that, we can be loosening our other clamp up on the other end of our extension. With that nice and secure, let's grab our other bike. Now we'll just bring our clamp around our seat tube here on the second bike. Then just tighten it down after we slide that t-bolt back into the slot. Right, again just like the first bike we're going to secure it. Let's bringing our strap around the front tire, around the frame of the bike, and then around on the tag end through the end of the strap. Tighten that down. We've got our bikes loaded up. Now let's go ahead and secure these. Now our bike rack does come with a cable lock. Easy to use, as you can see it's a self coiling style, so when it's not in use, it's nice and Compact. What we'll do is just stretch our cable out here. Going to go around the frames of our bike that you choose, you can go down through the rims. Those are usually pretty expensive on these bikes, so good to secure that and we'll just bring the ends together, clip them in and we're set and ready to head down the road. Good shape, as you can see. Nice and solid. The bikes aren't going to be going anywhere. Let's go out and see how it fairs as we go through our test course. We'll start by doing this slow, this is going to show you the side to side movement of the rack, just like if we we're changing lanes or maybe doing some evasive maneuvers. Once we make our way around the corner, we'll get into a series of alternating speed bumps, this is going to show us really good twisting and torquing action. We'll now get into the solid speed bumps. This is going to simulate a big bump in the road or maybe entering and exiting a parking garage, a parking lot or maybe a driver way. That'll complete today's look at the Topline Truck Bed Mounted Two-bike rack. Part number UG2500, also available on a one-bike, three-bike and a four-bike. .

This is the second topline mount I have bought. About 2 years ago I bought the two-bike version. The second bike is secured with a straight strut to the first bike which in turn is directly mounted with the L shaped main strut. The 2-bike setup works pretty well for two light road bikes with straight top tubes which provides some flexibility in positioning the individual bikes, minimizing contact and handlebar interference. It does not work so well for mountain bikes since the only option (at least in our case) for connecting to bike 2 is the seat post. The strut is too short to keep the handlebars and brake and shifter components from rubbing against each other during transport. In addition, the straps that come with the system and are meant to hold the front wheel straight (keeping pressure against the front of the truck bed) and prevent rolling are too short for a full suspension mountain bike. On a washboard dirt road (often the kind of road leading to MTB areas around here) we had the whole setup collapse and the bikes slid into each other. The solution was to order a second, single bike mount and attach it to the other side of the truck bed. I also bought some longer straps to secure the front wheel on the MTBs. I think this will work well. A single bike setup always has been very stable for me on any road surface (provided a long enough strap to secure the front wheel). Overall this is still a very affordable solution for 2 bikes, compared to other options, and it does not require wheel removal. Making the provided front wheel straps maybe 5 inches longer would be a nice improvement, especially for use with mountain bikes. 182664

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

The Topline truck bed bike rack is perfect for my 2017 Chevy Silverado, fits the truck and fits my bike. The only thing that I didn't like was the nylon strap & buckle affair used to secure the front wheel to the frame. Because of that I ordered a 1" wide x 18" long velcro strap and now it's much faster and easier to secure the front wheel. Having to mess around with running the strap through the buckle each time was very inconvenient. My suggestion would be to replace the strap & buckle with a similar velcro set up. Besides the strap, the rack itself is wonderful, easy to install and it supports my road bike like a champ. I love it. Thanks etrailer, great product. 436975

Does not attach to Toyota Tacoma 2017 model. ETrailer said it would fit. Company instructions are very vague on installing for my truck but say I am to cut a hole in the factory Bedliner which will not work. They charged me shipping and will likely charge my return shipping. Could and should have paid slightly more from amazon so at least I could have returned the POS... but now I will find a way to modify it or throw it in the garbage. Save your money if you have any truck with a factory bed liner 713627

The product I received was exactly as described. I installed it in about 5 minutes after I located the best spot on my truck's bed rail to fit my bicycle. It is installed on a 2018 Chevy Colorado. I have a spray-on bed liner, so no modifications were necessary for the installation. 691952

Product works as advertised. It works perfect for my application. It’s quick and easy to install and keeps my bike secure. My only complaint is the aluminum That attaches to your bed is thin. The screw that tightens the clamp stripped out whithin the first month. However, I put a wing nut on the backside and it works just fine. All in all, it works. 488948

I've been using this for about a year now. First I have to say E-Trailer is great to deal with. Shipping was quick and prices are great. For the most part this rack is good. It holds the bike securely, locks and can be put on and taken off in about 10 seconds. The articulating clamp is necessary to accommodate different frame designs but it also has one major downfall. It allows the bike to move in the bed. It's hard to explain in a review but occasionally when I'm driving I see the rear tire "migrate" toward the center of the bed especially on bumpy roads making the bike look like it's going to fall . To solve that, I just use a bungee cord attached to a loop in my bed to keep the rear wheel in place. A friend of mine uses the Rec Rac system. That definitely holds the bike more secure. The only problem for me with the Rec Rac was my bikes overall length is slightly longer than my bed and you have to connect the bike in 2 places parallel to bed. So I couldn't close my tailgate. This Topline rack allows me to put my bike at a bit of an angle so I can close my gate. So for me, I'm OK with having to use a bungee cord to hold the rear wheel as a trade off for closing my tailgate. If your bike fits in your bed front to back, I think the Red Rac is a better product. But if it doesn't, then this rack is a must. 351258

Good quality product. Installation was very easy. Product was not immediately available from the source vendor but the folks at etrailer communicated to me and kept me up to date on the order status without the need for me to ask. It is obvious that they are focused on customer satisfaction, which is what will bring me back the next time I need a product that they sell. 340462

This product fit our needs perfectly. We fit three bikes of various sizes inside our truck canopy, keeping them out of the weather and secure while we toured the U.S. The clamps to the truck bed itself would tighten more securely in a bed without a canopy, but the bikes still stayed in place. We are very pleased with the product and would happily recommend it. 302666

This product was easily installed on my Tundra. This is the second bike carrier I've bought. The first one has proven to be reliable and secures my road bike very well. The first one was for securing two bikes, but the bar clamp for connecting a second bike would not work on the steeply angled tubes of my wife's cruiser. This is because the clamps on each end of the bar do not move to form an articulated joint. Because of this, the bar clamp wouldn't match the angle of the cruiser's tubes. This is the reason I bought a second bike carrier for one bike. I now can secure my wife's bike with the new carrier. Be aware that buying the carrier for 2 bikes may not work for the second bike. It depends on the frame geometry of the 2 bikes you're trying to connect. 291092

Excellent price for a great bike carrier for a road bike that I want to take out without removing the front wheel. It was easy to install, taking me about 15 minutes to get the location along the bed rail just right so that my bike sits with the front wheel snug against the front of the truck bed. I was a bit concerned about where I would clamp to my carbon framed bike, but the flexibility of this carrier made it easy to line it up and securely clamp to the aluminum seat post. I have not been on really bumpy roads, but the bike has been stable on the freeway and slightly bumpy surface streets. Works perfectly on a 2015 GMC Canyon with a spray-on bed liner. 279567

Comments

The two bike carriers I have work great after constant use for a year now. However I did have one minor issue with one of the bike carriers. While driving on a curvy road, the screws holding the bike clamp to the radial arm sheared off. My truck has a liner and at a relatively low speed, there was no damage to the bike or truck bed. The bike was put in snugly to the front of the truck bed and I use a doorstop to wedge the front tire, so I chalked it up bad luck with the screws. I was able to repair easily with new screws since the screws sheared off such that it left a stub to grab a hold to remove. In spite of this, Im still very happy with the carrier since I can quickly load the bikes without removing a tire.

Has been working just as indicated, this will be the second year of using it, wish I would have found this before I went to all the expense of constructing an in bed bike rack that can only be used in one pickup. The Topline system can be used in different trucks which is a big advantage.

Glad I stumbled on this product as I had similar idea that I thought was going to need to fab up myself. Can't beat eTrailer price either! I got lucky in that I thought my tool box was going to be a big problem in general but the gap that allows the lid to open on mine made a great place to turn the front wheel to also help hold the bike. Was so convenient don't even have to remove my 5th wheel hitch and it actually worked great to secure the included cable lock to for security. I even had room behind the bikes to store all the other stuff I brought on my trip like tool boxes etc. Another product I stumbled on that completes the solution is the "Bike Brake" which is a gloried rubber band to lock the front bake easily. Installed on my 2015 RAM 3500 with factory bed liner with no modification except adding the included spacer. I was a little skeptical after mounting it to the bed rails as seemed like could have been designed for more surface contact with the rail but just did 1,000 mile road trip with two of these one separate bikes and neither budged at all even on very bumpy back roads. You do need test for the proper mounting position of the bed rail clamp as not a lot of tubing to slide it a little forward or backwards but still highly recommend this product! One funny critisism: it shipped in a box that was about 10x the size it needed to be LOL. It freaked me out as was sure shipped me the wrong thing just before had to leave for the trip when noticed this HUGE like 5x2x2 ft box on my patio. I almost feel bad with such a great price and free shipping. To top it off the Topline box the parts are actually in within the huge box is also WAY too big itself. 256718

This easy-to-use rack will simply clamp to the bed rails on your Ram and attach to the frame or seat post of your bike to hold it in place. The carrier is plenty strong enough to secure your 55 pound bike as the truck bed itself will be doing most of the heavy lifting. A really nice thing about this particular carrier...

  • Compatibility of Hollywood Racks Truck Bed Carrier with 9mm Skewer
  • The Hollywood Racks Truck Bed Bike Carrier # HRT970 that you referenced will work with any bike that has a quick-release 9mm front fork but it will not fit if it's not a quick-release. This is the standard 9mm type fork but you will want to make sure on your particular bike. The carrier won't be compatible though if your fork doesn't have the quick release mechanism. If you have a different style fork then a better option will be with a frame-mount carrier like the Topline # UG2500-1,...

  • What Components of the Truck Bed 4 Bike Carrier # UG2500-4 are Plastic and Which are Metal
  • The easy way to determine which parts of the Truck Bed 4 Bike Carrier # UG2500-4 are metal and which parts are plastic is that the silver parts are metal and the plastic ones are black with the exception of the bed rail clamps which are black and metal. The same is true for the add on part # UG2500-1.

  • Locking Truck Bed Bike Rack for a 2016 Ford F-150
  • We have a lot of bike racks that will fit the bed of your 2016 Ford F-150 but Yakima does not list the BedHead # Y01133 as a fit. For a rack that will fit and that is similar in price and comes with a lock I recommend the Topline rack # UG2500-1. I have also included a link to all of the truck bed bike racks that will fit your truck.

  • Will the Thule Insta-Gater Work On a Bike with Fenders
  • I do have a few other options for you but the Thule Insta-Gater Truck Bed Single Bike Rack part # TH501 will not work with bikes that have fenders. Instead, you can use the Topline 1 Bike Carrier Truck Bed Mounted Expandable Bike Rack part # UG2500-1 or the Inno Velo Gripper Bike Rack for Truck Beds part # INRT201 depending on the weight of your bike but these are the only truck bed mounted options that will work for your bike without removing the wheel. Please note, if you have RamBoxes...

  • Will Camper Shell on 2003 Ford Ranger Interfere with Topline # UG2500-1 Truck Bed Bike Rack
  • The bracket that holds the Topline Bike Carrier to the bed rail would extend over the top of the bed rail by about 1/2 an inch, as you can see in the photo I've edited for you. If you have a 1/2 inch of space free on the inboard side of the bed rail, or you sit the camper shell on top of the bracket, the bike rack should work just fine. You will need to make sure that the interior height of the truck bed with the cap in place will accommodate the height of your bike.

  • Alternate Way To Clamp Bike With Topline Truck Bed Bike Rack To Avoid Shift Cable On Frame
  • The Topline Truck Bed Bike Rack, part # UG2500-1 is designed to clamp to frames up to 1-1/2 inches diameter, but also has an alternative for securing the bike. Since you are concerned with the shift cable on your bike you can attach the clamps to the seat post instead of the frame. That should eliminate the chance of damaging the shift cables on the bike. if you are planning on carrying more than one bike I recommend the Topline Add-A-Bike Assembly, part # AB2600. For added security...

  • Recommended Truck Bed Bike Rack for 2019 Ford F-150
  • For your 2019 Ford F-150 I highly recommend the Topline Bike Carrier # UG2500-1 because of its ease of installation and unique versatility. The carrier itself simply clamps to the bed rails on your F-150 to provide a secure attachment to the bike's frame or seat post. No drilling or permanent mounting is required. The included cable lock also helps to protect your investments when the bikes are left unattended. A great thing about this carrier is that it can also be expanded to hold...
