Video Transcript for TruXedo B-Light LED Truck Bed Lighting System Installation - 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Ryan: Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer today on our 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the TruXedo B-Light LED lighting system for truck beds. To be honest with you, this is a pretty cool little kit. It's really simple how it works, and it's going to make life a little bit easier whenever it's night time and you're trying to get stuff in and out of the bed of your truck. Since they are LEDs, they're going to shine really bright and not use a lot of energy at all to illuminate them. I mean, even in a well lit room like we're in right now, you can see that they're going to throw off quite a bit of light, but to give you an idea on what they'll look like when you need them at nighttime, let's go ahead and cut off the overhead lights and see how they do.I go ahead and flip our switch and pretty impressive actually. When it's dark outside, when you turn these on, you shouldn't have any issues at all finding whatever you need out of the back of your truck.

I can really see these lights being useful. For those of you that have a tonneau cover, like our customer does today. Say you don't always feel like having to unroll or push a tonneau cover in just to grab something. Say, for example, it's night time, you have a cover all the way out, flip the tailgate, it'd be really difficult to see you inside of the bed. When your tonneau cover is out like this, you can't simply just flip your cab light to help you see a little bit.

With it set up like this, I'm just going to have to reach in flip the switch and you're going to be able to have and get anything you need. Each side is going to come with four LEDs, so whether you have a short bed or even a long bed, you're going to be able to space them apart evenly, and really distribute that light the way you want it. It's also going to come included with the switch, so it's going to make turning them off and on really convenient. Each individual light is going to have six diodes and since they are LEDs, what's great is, they're going to be really reliable and last for a long time. You're not going to have to worry about any brittle filaments or replacing bulbs like the traditional style incandescent lights. At the end of the day, kind of a fun accessory that'll make your life a little bit easier whenever you need some extra lighting.

Now as far as the installation goes, it's really not too bad. It is a little time consuming and there is going to be a few extra things that you're going to need to pick up, to get it done that don't come included with the kit. To begin our install. We're going to be in the back of our box and what we're going to need to do is figure out where we want to put our lights. The kit is going to come with two strips like this so one for each side of our bed.

Whenever you're mounting these, you want the end that has just the light to be towards the cab of the truck. That's because the end that has all this extra wiring is going to need to eventually drop down under the truck and get connected to a switch. We definitely want this wire to work with back there. We're going to have a couple of different ways we can mount these up. We can either kind of run them like this on the side, or actually turn the lights like this and kind of mount them on the bottom here. I will say, if you decide to model them like this, it's probably a good idea to secure the lights here with these tabs using the provided screws. I will say, if you do decide to model like this, I would recommend using this little tab here and the provided screw you, to screw it into the truck bed. However, if you're going to turn them like this, mount them up on the bottom, you definitely want to use the two sided sticky tape that's on the back of this and that only. That's because if you use a screw to drill up, chances are pretty good that screw is going to protrude through the metal and out of the top of the truck bed rail. With that being said, I think I'm going to mount them up flat like this and that's really just to provide us with a cleaner look and where they're at, they're still going to put off plenty of light for us to see.Whenever we begin to mount these, we definitely want to start towards the front of the truck. Before I stick this to it, I noticed that there's this kind of like this little bulge here, this little pocket. What I think I'm going to do is run our wire through this first, that way it'll make it a little bit easier and a little more manageable, as opposed to having our lights stuck up there and trying to do it after. I'm going to take the long end wire and just push it through there. Going to have to kind of reach in there with your fingers and grab it. What I'm going to do is just kind of pull all the slack out of it. That way it'll be easier to kind of position our lights, where they need to be. Whenever you're ready to stick the light up to the bed, you definitely want to make sure that the surface you're going to stick it on, is really clean and dry. I went ahead and just wiped it really well with some rubbing alcohol to ensure that we get a good bond.I will say, this sticky tape before you put the light up, what I like to do is just kind of pushed down on it, make sure it's really connected good to the light itself. It's pretty straight forward from here. I'm going to peel off the backing paper, simply put the light into position and stick it to the truck. You really want to push firmly on it, on all areas of light to ensure that we get a good bond. This is what the light looks like once we have it stuck to our truck. From here, I'm simply just going to repeat that same process for the rest of our lights. I went ahead and stuck all our lights on, and this is the way it looks. Here's the first one that we did. You can see how I kind of routed it along our bed, kind of spacing the lights out apart evenly. There was a spot or two where there was some kind of extra slack in the wire and I just used a zip tie to kind of secure that extra slack. I just kept on going back. This is how it turned out.I do just want to mention one thing and to be on the safe side because I kind of had a problem with it. These wires are labeled. You can see this one has the positive sign there, and this one did have a negative sign, but that sticker came right off. To be on the safe side, what I did was just put a piece of red tape over here on the positive wire. I'll know that's the positive, and this one is a negative. I do suggest maybe marking it with a piece of tape or a paint pen, something like that, just to keep everything in order. Now, with that being said, we have our big bundle of wire. So what we're going to do is drop this down underneath our truck. The way we're going to do that, it's really easy. Right here, there's a little opening and we're simply just going to take our wire, push it in there and push it down towards the ground. We'll feed all that down through there and that'll actually come out underneath of our truck. Now, over here on the passenger side of our truck, I installed our lights, the exact same way that we did the other side. This is how it turned out. Just to kind of give you guys an idea. Now, with that being said, once we get to the very back, I dropped our bundle of wire through that same opening down underneath our truck. Now, we're Don up here inside of the bed, let's go underneath the truck and work on our wiring. Underneath the truck, here on the passenger side, right here is where our wiring dropped down. Now, I routed our wiring over towards the driver's side of the truck that way we can hook everything up together in one spot, just use some zip ties to secure it along the way. This is the path that I took, just followed it up and along there. Up along through there, comes out right up here, right there. This is where our wiring ended up. All right, so now on the driver's side, we have our wires coming from the lights on the driver's side, and the wires coming from the lights on the passenger side. What we're going to do is take both of the negative or ground wires from the lights on each side. That happens to be these two and I'm going to cut off this extra wiring here, because we don't need all the slack.I'm going to strip back the end, so the installation on each wire. What I'm going to do is simply connect the two together by twisting it. Twist it up nice and tight. I'm going to take a ring terminal, which you will have to pick up separately, but you can find it here at etrailer, slide it over the bare end of that wire. We can grab our crimps and squeeze it down. This will connect both these wires together, and now we can find a spot to secure our ring terminal to the chassis. Where I think I'm going to ground our ring terminal is right here, it's a really the thick and solid piece of metal so it should provide us with a really good ground. I'm just going to use a self-tapping screw to secure it. Now, what I did with our two power wires is tape them together at one end. There's also an additional thick power wire. This does not come included. You will need to pick this up separately. The reason for this, is because we're going to need to get power, so this is going to run eventually to the battery underneath the hood, but now's a great time to get one end of it set up. I took that additional thick black power wire and the two power wires from our lights taped them all together. What we're going to do now is go back into the bed, find an opening and get these wires back up top. To get our wires up, back inside the bed here on the driver's side, we're going to have this oval shape plug, and I'm going to pop that out. Take a flathead screwdriver, kind of pry underneath it, remove that for now. I'm going to take a pole wire. It's a piece of nylon air tubing, but you can also use a coat hanger or something like that. What I'm going to do is feed this down. That way it'll drop underneath our bed. I'll be able to tape our wires to it, come back to up top, pull them up and we'll feed them right out through this opening. Here's where our pull wire drop through. Went ahead and taped those wires to it. I can pull on the other end of that wire and get everything up where it needs to be. Our wires that came out through this opening are going to need to get connected to the included switch. Now, before we connect the wires to the switch, it's a good idea to figure out how we're going to actually mount this switch. If you take the cap that we removed from here and flip it over, there's actually some little pieces of plastic around there that are really, really close to the same size of that switch. What I think I'm going to do is cut out some of this plastic to the size of our switch. We'll be able to push the switch through, have it mounted, really clean in this plug. Once we have it mounted, in this plug, then we can focus on getting the wires actually hooked up to the back of it.I went ahead and just use a utility knife and very carefully trimmed out a square opening here on our cap. I went right over to the middle there on the other side. There was a little support there, and trim that out, just to kind of give you a reference. With that being said, we take our switch and put it in the cap, just push it all the way down until it locks into place and it's sitting flush. Now that we have this mounted up, we can work on getting the wires connected to it. I'm going to take our wire here and just kind of trim off some of that extra wiring, strip back all three ends. The main power wire, you want to put on a spade connector. Again, these aren't included, but you can find them here at etrailer. Slide over and get crimped down. The other two wires are going to twist together and put on a connector as well. Mine happened to kind of fall back into that pocket so I'll go down there and bring it back up and get that done.Pull out the wires here, then twist these together nice and tight. Again, put on a spade connector. It's going to slide in and get crimped out. While we have it crimped, we can take our switch and hook them up. If you look at the switch, you can see, there's a post there, a post there, and this side is missing. I'm going to take our main power wire, connect it to this post and this pushes on and the two wires that we connected together and run them on this post. With them connected, now we can just take our plug and pop it back into its original position. Now back underneath the truck. We can run that power wire all the way up to the battery in the engine compartment. Here's where it comes down from our switch. I ran it along through here, just like how we ran the other wires earlier. This goes across. Once I got to this side, here's where I started to run it, actually towards the front of the truck. I just went up above the hat channels or bed supports here. Along the side of our frame, just continued on like that. Want to be sure and do your best to avoid any hot or moving parts. I used some zip ties just to secure everything. From here, I just continued to route it, behind our rockers on the side of our frame rail, just continuing on. Right about this point, what I did to get it up into the engine compartment was using a pull wire like we did earlier. I popped the hood, drop that pull wire down. It came out through the soaping. I was able to tape the wire to it, went back up and fed it into the hidden compartment. Underneath the hood, here's where our wiring came up. I just secured it to this brace along through here. Connected it to a fuse holder, which again, you'll need to get separately. I do highly recommend using a fuse and I attach it using a inaudible 00:18:44 connector there. Here's where it connects to the battery.I do suggest putting it directly to the battery terminal that way we don't have to worry about any issues down the road. Because on this particular setup, we do have a lot of posts to choose from, but they do power and other things. I like to be on the safe side and just connect it directly to the terminal. Once you have that connected, then you can finally pop your fuse in. Now that we have everything hooked up, we can come back here to our switch, flip it and make sure all the lights work. That'll finish up our look at and installation of the TruXedo B-Light LED lighting system for truck beds on our 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500.

Review from a similar B-Light in Truck Bed Accessories

I will begin by saying that the lights work exactly as described and produce sufficient light to illuminate the bed of my truck. I do have (2) of the light strips, one each mounted under each of the side rails of my Bak Flip tonneau cover. The double sided tape that is included on the light strip portion of the lights is horrible. It does not want to separate (to expose the sticky side) and on each of mine, it pulled off of the strip completely and I had to wrestle with it to make it work. This needs to be addressed as these are not inexpensive lights. Overall I am very satisfied with the lights and they are a decent value...and they are one of very few battery powered options you can choose from.

Review from a similar B-Light in Truck Bed Accessories

These work out great in my truck bed. They are extremely bright and light up the bed beautifully. I bought two one for each side because if you have something tall in the middle it blocks the light from the rest of the bed. I also bought three of these for my enclosed trailer. I attached them to the roof toward the front, the middle and near the back to add some extra light in the trailer. Great product.

Review from a similar B-Light in Truck Bed Accessories

Liked the first one I bought, I had to add another to my truck bed. Easy install, and I had no wiring to hook up. Nice, and bright, and the auto shut off is a great feature so you wont wear down the batteries if you forget to turn it off.

The light is very bright. It was installed on the inside of my 3/4 ton P.U. truck bed over a week ago and the 3M adhesive is doing it's job. With all of the bouncing around from driving it has not moved.

Good lighting. The tape backing came off half way and could not peel the rest. Other than that I am satisfied. Just have to see how long the on/off switch lasts.
