One of the more popular cooling systems available, the radiator-style, plate-and-fin heat exchanger provides increased surface area so that fluids can spread out along the finned chambers to cool faster. In addition to the increased surface area, this cooler also features turbulator technology, whereby fluids are agitated continuously, not only to facilitate heat transfer, but also to prevent any undesirable drop in pressure.

Video Transcript for Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit Review

Today we're gonna be taking a look at Derale's Series 9000 Plate Thin Transmission Coolers. These come in varying sizes labeled as class one, class five. These are also available individually with just a cooler or as kits that come with mounting hardware and the hoses and adapters you need to get it installed. Now all these coolers will fit on just about every vehicle. The big factors you wanna look into is how much hauling you're planning on doing and heat dysplasian 00:00:27 you need, and how much space inside you have available on your vehicle to get it mounted up. You can mount it just about anywhere you'd like, but it's best to choose a location where it's gonna get adequate airflow. So we've placed ours here just in front of the condenser so we know that airflow is gonna go through here 'cause it has to to get to our condenser and radiator. These coolers are really popular with people who do a lot of towing.

Adding additional cooler to your transmission will help lower the operating temperatures, and this is particularly important when you are hauling heavy loads and your transmission is under a lot of stress. Putting one of these in can help lower those temperatures and extend the life of your transmission, not only when you're not towing, but especially when you are towing by keeping them at normal operating temperatures. What this means to you is it's gonna extend the life of your transmission by reducing the risk of heat related failures. It's a radiator style cooler meaning that it is air cooled. The air will flow through the various fins in here, cooling the pipes that the fluid is running through inside, just like the radiator on your vehicle. The cooler also features turbulator 00:01:28 technology, where it keeps the fluid continually agitated so you don't experience any drops in pressure and it's constantly dissipating heat. While they do come individually, more than likely you're gonna be purchasing the kit as the individual units are more for replacement of an existing unit.

The kit comes with all of your fittings and hoses you need to get it installed in the vehicle. Now depending on your vehicle, you may need special adapters to get it installed and there are many of those available here at etrailer.com to assist in getting this installation unit installed on your particular vehicle. Now it's possible that you may not need an additional adapter, one does come included with your kit to thread into the radiator. Or if you have rubber inline hoses like we do here, we we're able to just use that adapter to go between the new hose that comes in the kit and our factory hose that was going to the radiator originally. Then we just secured it down with the included hose clamps. Now if you're wondering which adapters you may need for your vehicle, you can find those with the instructions that come included with your cooler. Now you're probably on the website going hey, I don't have my cooler yet, well that's okay.

We've got the instructions on the product page here on our website. You can click those below and pull those up so you can be prepared and get everything you need to get it installed. The cooler is simple to install. You just hook it inline between the return line from your radiator to your transmission and the transmission itself. That'll allow you to get the cooling benefits from your factory radiator and then from there, cool it additionally to our supplemental cooler here. Once your cooler's hooked up inline between your radiator and your transmission, you can mount it up and it comes with included snap pins that'll hold it in place and these simply just poke through the condenser and radiator and also through our cooler.

They come out on the other side and there is a locking tab that is placed on 'em that keeps it pinched in place. There are some rubber pads also that you can put between your cooler and your condenser to keep those separated and allow air to flow between them. Now with our fascia back in place, you can see that this is what it's gonna look like when it's installed. On our MDX here, we've got plenty of room in here so you really don't even need to take the fascia off to get it installed, you can get to all of your hoses, you can get to where we mounted it over here. You can easily slide that cooler in and out of the large open spot here. Depending on your vehicle, you may or may not need to remove the fascia to get it installed, just depends on how much room you have to work with. That completes our look at Derale's Series 9000 Plate Thin Transmission Coolers.

Packaging was damaged but no damage to cooler due to solid construction. Had done online searches for installation tips and suggestions. All very beneficial. However, this cooler is larger than many I saw online and I had to find an alternate installation location. I was able to find a suitable location in front of radiator and minor modification (drilled two additional mounting holes in mount bracket and trimmed one corner for clearance.) Overall has shown lower transmission operating temps. Have not towed since installation and hope that lower temps carry over to towing a load. I give this product, shipping, and customer service a thumbs up. 644257

2006 GMC 1500 This product is solidly designed and the installation kit well thought out. The connection hose was heavier and better quality than what the auto parts store could provide. I will be adding additional clamps to the connections so there are two on each just as a precaution against leakage. The single clamps are working well for my test period. I fabricated brackets for mine but using the plastic pins would work just as well. It is a huge improvement over the factory cooler. I would recommend it to anyone that is towing near or at truck capacity. 153950

Comments

The cooler is working flawlessly. I replaced the clamps with 12 PEX pipe crimps for a better seal. The transmission has operated within safe temps while towing 7000 lbs on I-70 over the Rocky Mountains. It is a worthy product!

Review from a similar Derale Series 9000 in Transmission Coolers

My vehicle originally did not have a transmission cooler. After warming up, my transmission temperature would typically be 100 degrees higher than the ambient air temperature, whether moving or stopped. Towing the largest enclosed U-Haul trailer (6'x12') would raise the temperature to about 120 degrees above ambient. After adding this cooler, the transmission stays about 70 degrees higher than the ambient air temperature on the highway, and 80-85 degrees above ambient while parked or driving in slow traffic. I haven't towed that same U-Haul trailer since adding the cooler, but towing a much larger (8.5'x20') enclosed trailer raises the temperature to about 110 degrees above ambient. If you can find a spot the cooler will physically fit, it should work for your vehicle. You may have to get creative to solidly mount it. I used an angle grinder to remove part of a factory brace. When doing work in this area of your vehicle, be careful not to puncture the AC condenser! If you do, like I did, you will have to replace it. Some AutoZone locations will rent a vacuum pump and manifold gauge set. Doing your own repair means the total repair cost is only the sum of the new AC condenser and refrigerant. The inlet/outlet NPT fittings on this cooler need to be tighter than you think. I was worried about stripping the threads, and didn't tighten them enough at first. I ended up removing my bumper cover multiple times to tighten them until they stopped leaking. I found the best way to detect a leak was to zip-tie a folded paper towel below the fitting. If it turned red, there was a leak. For my application, I would have preferred built-in 3/8" hose barb inlets instead of the 1/2" NPT fittings. 242582

Fittings came contaminated with metal shavings from machining and wouldn't even fit in to the cooler really poor quality. If this is in the fittings who knows whats in the cooler. Complete waste of time do not buy 219532

Review from a similar Derale Series 9000 in Transmission Coolers

Kit had almost everything needed to install on my 09 Subaru Forester. The only extra thing I bought was another four foot length of hose. I made brackets out of metal I had on hand for a more secure mounting, and I installed the cooler with the ports facing the drivers side. I wanted to avoid sharp bends in the hoses so I made loops in both hoses to connect to the existing lines in my car. I also slid pieces of old garden hose over the new hoses at points where it was close to metal parts to avoid chafing of the hoses. The hose supplied with the kit was the correct diameter for my car and the hoses slid onto the existing fittings. I took my time with the install. I had to move the horn so I could position the cooler on the drivers side in front of the radiator and AC condenser. Routing of the hoses to the existing connections required some planning (and an extra hose) but everything else is very simple. Very nice kit! 286681

Ask the Experts about this Derale Transmission Coolers

Do you have a question about this Transmission Cooler?

  • Can I Replace The Factory Transmission Cooler on a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado
  • In regards to your 2013 Chevrolet Silverado, if you will be removing the auxiliary transmission cooler then I recommend using the Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13614 to replace it. This cooler measures 11" wide x 11-3/8" tall x 1-1/4" deep which you should have plenty of space for. In general we recommend that you install the supplemental transmission cooler in-line the factory transmission cooler (in radiator) and the auxiliary transmission cooler (behind...

Since you said you have a small cooler already I recommend running the fluid through the cooler you have and then through the # D13614, and then through the radiator. This would be the optimal way to cool your fluid. To make it much easier to install the hoses it is recommended to use part # D13024 if you have 1/2-inch-20 threads. It is possible to bypass the factory cooler in the radiator by blocking off the input/output locations for the transmission cooler on the radiator. You would then need to mount the largest possible cooler that you can get to fit or install a remote cooler with its own fan. The Series 9000 Plate-Fin...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2010 Chevy 1500 Truck
  • The Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler # D13614 that you referenced would be a good choice for your 2010 Chevy 1500 truck. This cooler has a GVW rating of 22,500 lbs. You can either bypass the factory cooler altogether, or you can run the coolers one after the other. I would recommend you run the fluid first through the factory cooler and then to the # D13614 and then back to your transmission. This would optimize the cooling of your transmission fluid. I attached an...

  • Transmission Cooler and Pan Recommendations for Towing with a 2001 Ford Expedition 5.4 Liter
  • For your 2001 Ford Expedition with 5.4 L engine, I would recommend the largest cooler that will fit in front of the AC condenser at the front of the vehicle. The Derale Series 9000 Transmission Cooler Kit, item # D13614, would be a good choice. You will also need the Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for Ford, item # D13025, to complete the installation on your 5.4 Liter Expedition. A larger capacity transmission pan would be a good idea also. If your Expedition has a 4R100 transmission...

  • Do I Need Bigger Trany Cooler for Towing My 2010 Jeep Liberty on a Trailer
  • As far as transmission coolers go, you cannot cool transmission fluid too much, so installing the largest cooler that space will allow is perfectly fine and will benefit your transmission the most. The trailer and Jeep you will be towing will probably add up to about 7,000 lbs so I would recommend the Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, item # D13614. This cooler measures 11 inches wide x 11-3/8 inches tall x 1-1/4 inches deep, so you will need to make sure there is...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 with a 5.3 Liter Engine
  • While transmission coolers are not vehicle specific and you can use # D13614 if you wanted to, there are some that are recommended for the 2009 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3 liter engine. I have included a link to the available options for you to view. Out of these, I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, # D13504, which is most like the cooler you referenced. It is a class IV cooler rated for up to 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight. You will also need the...

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler for 2017 Infinity QX60
  • Transmission coolers can be vehicle specific with their adapters, but for your 2017 Infinity QX60, there isn't a specific fit. I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets - Class III - Efficient # D13503 for a good option. The overall dimensions are 8-3/4 tall x 11 wide x 7/8 deep and the dimensions are the greatest restrictions on vehicles. You will want to look at what space you have available in front of your radiator for best function. For...

  • Recommendations for Cooling a C4 Transmission in a 1966 Ford Bronco Rock Crawler
  • It sounds to me like you will definitely want to upgrade your transmission cooler. Since you will not have a cooler that is being cooled by the fluid running through the radiator, I agree that you will need to upgrade or add a cooler to your system. Heat Sink Coolers like the Dual-Pass Heat Sink Transmission Cooler, item # D13266, that you referenced are not nearly as efficient as a plate and fin cooler or a cooler with an electric fan added. If you are running an electric fan with...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2007 GMC Yukon XL
  • Both transmission cooler # D13504 and # D13614 can be used on your 2007 GMC Yukon XL. The difference is the capacity. The larger # D13614 has more capacity so it is more efficient but it also takes up more space. If the larger cooler fits I recommend going with it. You can use fitting # D13035 with either cooler to avoid having to cut and flare lines.

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2005 Nissan Titan Towing a Rockwood Roo 21SS
  • Adding a transmission cooler to your 2005 Nissan Titan is a great idea to improve transmission performance and longevity, especially if you will be towing your Rockwood Roo 21SS trailer. Towing will put additional strain on an engine and transmission and one of the most common causes of transmission failure is overheating. When choosing a transmission cooler, it is best to choose the largest cooler that will fit in the space you have available because transmission fluid cannot be over...

  • Can the Factor Transmission Cooler be Bypassed on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0
  • The transmission coolers that we carry are designed as supplemental coolers and not to replace a factory cooler. You could bypass the factory cooler but you would need the largest cooler that will fit in the available space in the engine compartment or you would need a cooler that has its own electric fan. For a large cooler or one that is very efficient I recommend # D54006 which is a stacked plate design (most efficient). It measures 13 inches wide by 13-11/16 inches tall by 2 inches...

  • Can Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Replace OEM Cooler on 2010 Ford Escape
  • If you are needing a larger cooler that has 1/2" fittings then you very well could install the Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D13614 on your 2010 Ford Escape. Just be sure that you have enough room for the cooler itself (see attached photo). Just please note that even though aftermarket coolers can be very effective, we don't really recommend using them as a replacement for the OEM cooler as they are really meant to be a supplement to the OEM cooler.

  • Can 2005 Nissan Armada With OEM Transmission Cooler Add Second Transmission Cooler
  • Even though your 2005 Nissan Armada already has a transmission cooler you can absolutely add a secondary cooler because fluids will not over-cool. In regards to fit, the rule of thumb with aftermarket transmission coolers is you want to get the largest one that will fit in the space you have. For example, the Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D13614 is very large, measuring 11" wide x 11-3/8" tall x 1-1/4" deep and would be my recommendation if you have the space...

  • Recommendation for Cooling the Coolant and Transmission Fluid Temperature on a 2008 Chevy Avalanche
  • For the radiator coolant temperature, I recommend adding a supplemental fan or fans depending on how much space you have under the hood. There is no limit to the amount of fans you can have. A pusher fan, mounted in front of the radiator pushing air through it, would be the most efficient (provided that the factory fan is mounted on the same side and pushes air through in the same direction). A puller fan would be used on the other side of the radiator to pull air through. The largest electric...

  • Best Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 1999 Ford F-350 Powerstroke Diesel
  • When picking out a transmission cooler for a vehicle you really want to pick out the largest and most efficient style of cooler that will fit the available space in front of your radiator/condenser/intercooler. If you have room for it the Derale Cooler part # D13614 would be a great choice as it is a large plate fin cooler that would do an excellent job cooling your transmission fluid. You will also need the fitting # D13025 to make the install a bit easier.

  • Recommended Transmission Coolers for 2000 Ford Expedition with 5.4L V8 Engine
  • Transmission coolers like the Class V Derale Series 9000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler # D13614 are not vehicle specific; other pan type coolers such as # D14208 that bolt on in place of your transmission pan ARE specific to your 2000 Ford Expedition with 5.4L V8 engine. You can install Derale cooler # D13614 as long as you have space for it to mount in one of the preferred locations (see the linked article) such as in front of your AC condenser. You will also need hose fitting kit # D13025.
