Video Transcript for Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler Review

Speaker 1: Today we'll be having a look at the Derale 8000 Series line of plate-fin transmission coolers. Here's what our transmission cooler looks like installed. Now, the reason you're gonna want an auxiliary transmission cooler such as this one on your vehicle is quite simple. Heat is the enemy of transmissions. It is the number one cause of premature failure on your transmission. By reducing the temperature of the fluid inside your transmission, you will extend the life of it, and also have added cooling abilities.

The colder the transmission fluid is, the more heat it can actually absorb. Plus, we are expanding the cooling capacity of the system by having additional room for more fluid, which, will also help reduce the temperature. Now, you may ask, "How is this important to me because my vehicle already has a transmission cooler build inside the radiator" Well, it's quite simple. If you we're ever planning on doing aggressive driving, or towing a trailer, towing a trailer causes additional wear and tear on your transmission, and causes increased fluid temperature. By cooling the temperature down further, you are making it easier on your vehicle in order to tow that extra weight. Now, how this works being installing in addition to the factory cooler inside the radiator, the fluid will leave the factory transmission cooler from the radiator, go inside of our auxiliary cooler here that we installed, get cooled down even further, and then go back into the return line that goes into your transmission.

So, you're adding additional cooling capacity, and a secondary cooler by having this aftermarket cooler installed. Now, for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing if this cooler's gonna work for your vehicle. At its widest point, it's 11" wide. From the very top to the very bottom, it's 7 1/4" tall, and it is 7/8 of an inch thick. Now, one thing our customers have noticed, when they're installing this cooler on a vehicle, they have noticed when they're installing it inline with the factory transmission cooler, that they have needed additional hose. Now, we do have additional hose available on our website.

Now, the 8000 Series of Derale transmission coolers are plate-fin design, and the plate-fin design increase surface area. The more surface area that we have, the more cooling capacity that we have. The more of your fluid you can spread out over a larger distance, the more it can get cooled down to reduce the temperature of your transmission. This cooler also features turbulator technology to help agitate the fluid passing through it. To help with heat transfer, but also to help prevent any drop in fluid pressure. Our transmission operates off fluid pressure, so if it falls below a certain amount, it may not shift gears properly.

By maintaining our fluid pressure, our transmission will shift gears properly, and work as it's designed. This cooler has an aluminum construction, so we don't need to worry about it corroding or rusting out over the course of time. It also has a nice gloss black finish, so it'll be easily concealed behind the grill of your vehicle, and it won't be visible are you're looking at the front of your car.And that completes our look at the Derale 8000 Series line of plate-fin transmission coolers.

I received the cooler on time and in fine condition. The factory box was well packed and all items were enclosed. I mounted the cooler using flat aluminum bar stock so I could leave a one inch space between the cooler and the front of the A/C condenser as I feel this will give me maximum transmission oil cooling. I used this product to replace a tube and fin cooler which was not doing the job even when not towing my trailers. I have not towed with this cooler yet but due to its construction I feel it will greatly reduce my transmission oil temperatures. Walt 9-22-2018 567912

I have been towing my inboard boat all summer and the cooler is doing a great job which I can tell because I have a transmission temperature gauge. The hottest it ever gets is 205 degrees when going uphill.

We've had it for a year in our 2008 TrailBlazer 2WD with 4.2L inline 6 cylinder. I think it's about the largest that would fit and we got it for a towing our 21' expandable camping trailer that can be about 4,500 lbs. max. Works great, although I added another install kit to be sure I had enough hose and the extra brackets and connection adapters. I did not want to use the mounting parts that poke through the radiator and A/C condenser fins, so I got the Derale kit with brackets and hose in an affordable kit together, part # D13006. 520230

2013 Chevrolet Colorado

Hello Gang, I have a 2013 Chevy suburban and tow a 7K plus travel trailer. While we were towing to Colorado near Cripple Creek the temps were low 90's and my trans spiked at 230. Had to pull over to let it cool down. Now keep in mind my suburban does not have a HD trans cooler just the stock radiator cooler. Fast forward one year now my stock trans line is starting to leak from the rubber hose so it's time to change. Decided to order the larger trans cooler might not have been the best idea as it's larger then where I wanted to put it. So after taking off the front bumper, headlights misc brackets and lots of bolts I was able to get it up behind the "A" frame bracket in front of the radiator. Make sure if you go this route to put the rubber hoses and clamps on before installing because you will not be able to install the hose after. The bracket the holds the hood latch has openings that just happen to line up with the inside bolt holes on the cooler. Hoses facing down You will need to cut the bottom of the plastic out of the way to route the hoses under the frame. Cutting the original trans cooler line was easy and the rubber hose was long enough to make both connections so I did not need the adapter. If I used the adapter the rubber hose would be too short. On the bottom I used the foam pads between the cooler and the frame and secured it with heavy duty Zip ties. Can't wait to test it out this summer. I forgot to take pictures of the final install but did take one picture showing the "A" frame in the middle of the radiator. It fit's perfectly behind it. 613917

I didn't know how to select the right trans cooler for my towing needs and I probably would have figured out how to mount it but with the help I got from your web site, I knew I had the right cooler and I knew how to install it in my vehicle. I saw a video of a cooler just like mine installed in a truck exactly like mine. How cool is that? etrailer.com is now my only source for trailer and towing parts. 408106

Solidly built, installation was relatively easy. Installed on a 2008 Trailblazer. Contrary to what I've read, the supplied hose was long enough. I had to cut off nearly 6" of excess. Mount in a location / orientation where the inlet / outlet are centered on and closest to the trans lines and it shouldn't be an issue. 92591

I have a 2010 Silverado 4x4 with a 6speed auto trans. I load it with a 3000 bl. cab over camper and take on the Sierra Nevadas a lot. Trans temp is very important to me as a former GM certified automatic transmission technician. For two week prion to installing this cooler I documented my trans temp reading under different driving conditions and ambient temperatures. Trans ran consistently between 180 to 210 degrees with no load in the bed. After installing this cooler and driving it under the same conditions as before, I have a clear in temp by 40 degrees. I also notice that if temp goes up from climbing a large grade, it s back down MUCH faster. A lot of these reviews talk about how easy it was to install the cooler... I would like to stress how well it works!!

Great value for the price and free shipping, package arrived on schedule, was packed extremely well, (I would know, retired Postal mail carrier), Derale 13504 transmission cooler was exactly what was described should work well for me to tow a 3500lb travel trailer with my 2008 GMC Acadia. Will be installing the cooler this week. This definitely should keep my transmission from over heating, it's rated somewhete at 22500 GVW. My vehicle and travel trailer CGVW is approximately 9000 lbs. 462784

The Derale 13504 has kept my transmission from over heating, have towed my travel trailer over 3600 miles no problems with transmission over heating in my 2008 Acadia SLT. Will be installing a auxiliary fan in front of my radiator to assist when in towing this summer. .

2009 GMC Yukon XL towing a 7,800lb travel trailer from California to South Carolina..... I don't believe the Yukon would have made this journey if it wasn't for the additional transmission cooler and engine oil cooler. Dragging the travel trailer through the mountains during the heat of the summer was taxing. However, my transmission never got above 190 F when it was over 100 F outside. Before installing the oil cooler AND transmission cooler, my engine temp would go to the 1-2 o'clock position and transmission temp would get up to 210 F. Highly recommend this product. 548155

Item arrived promptly and well packaged. Installed the cooler on my 2001 silvarado z71 5.3L on a warm Redding California afternoon 105f. It only took about 1/2 hour to install it inline with my stock cooler. Promptly the next day I pulled around my utility trailer loaded down with a 8x12 wood shed, outside temp on my mirror was reading 117f. Two hours of pulling and pushing and the shed was in place. It was hot I was hot truck was not even with the AC on full. The next punishment will be pulling the 25' camper kids dog and all essential beverages over the mountains in the heat to the coast. 201919

TannerI mounted the cooler on the passenger side of the radiator using the stock transmission cooler mount and the headlight mount. The cooler was mounted sideways and all the way to the top of the compartment i dry fit it and made sure the plastic radiator cover would still snap into place as well as the hood closed with no issue before installing it inline with my stock cooler. Tight fit but it works and works well.

Installed this on my 04 denali xl. Took me about an hour. I bolted mine on instead of using the zip ties. It is the right size to fit between the grill and the condenser. Right next to the tiny factory installed cooler that doesnt get any air because of the huge gmc logo. I installed mine in line with the factory cooler. It keeps the tranny dramatically cooler when towing. It is an inexpensive tranny saver. Etrailer has a great how to video that works for almost all the 02 to 07 yukon and suburbans. Dont forget the fitting adapter that fits into the cooler. 565715

I recently had the chance to use the Derale 8000 series transmission cooler during my last camping trip and was very impressed. I have a 2001 7.3 Powerstroke with 4" exhaust, S&B intake, gauges and a DP Tuner (60hp tow). I pull a 10,000 pound 5th wheel around Colorado. It seems like every where I pull in Colorado is up hill. It was common to see my transmission temp easily and quickly reaching 210-220 when towing mountain passes. Just before my last trip I installed the Derale cooler and the highest trans temp I saw was 190 at the top of Wilkerson Pass. What is more impressive was how quickly the temp dropped as I came out of the pass. For most of my trip my trans temp stayed around 180. While pulling in the city I saw temps around 200 which I assume was due to stop and go driving and not having the constant airflow through the cooler. I installed the cooler right behind the stock front grill to the vertical post with self tapping screws (the grill still fits perfectly). I then used two thin strips of metal that I got from the hardware store and secured them to the cooler and to the second vertical post. I wanted the cooler in the front of my truck to get maximum airflow. I then spray painted the metal strips black just for looks. I did have to buy an additional 4' of hose due to the location where I mounted the cooler. The optional instal kit was simple. The adaptors screwed in my radiator with no problem at all. Once I decided to mount the cooler the entire project was quick and simple. 143154

This cooler was delivered promptly and as advertized and will fit in front of the radiator and behind the grill. The 4 foot length of cooler hose is not long enough to install this cooler on a 2006 Dodge 5.9 diesel. I am a bit disappointed that I will need an additional 4 feet of cooler hose to complete this installation. I may also have to purchase a fitting but I'll find out later. I don't have pictures yet as the cooler has not been installed. I don't mind sending pictures later. Thanks, 14753

I installed the cooler last weekend in my 2008 Silverado. I've included some pictures. I made a strap to support the upper portion of the cooler and thru bolted the lower to the existing bracket. The hood bracket lower bolts had to be cut down to 1/4" length so they would not contact the cooler. The lower mount bolts had to be spaced to give the hood mount weld nuts clearance. Now to see how it does with a trailer and the Pacific Northwest hills. 81391

I installed this trans cooler on my 2009 Yukon. The installation video really made it much easier. I just pulled my boat under the same conditions I had prior to the install and I am very pleased with the results. Prior to mod, my trans temp got up to 204 degrees. trans cooler fit perfectly in front of the factory radiator and alongside the factory trans cooler in my 2004 Escalade ESV. adding this cooled trans from typically 200 degrees plus to no more than 160 degrees year round. typically tow a 5,000 pound camper or snowmobile trailer, never have a high temp issue since adding this. Installed this in my 2008 Avalanche, utilizing the following kit: D13504 - This cooler D13002 - Mounts D13003 - Extra hose D13035 - GM adapter Everything went well, took the longest time just figuring how I wanted it mounted in the front to make me happy, second to the time spent was of course removing the front fascia of the car. Once I got it in place the only extra things I needed were some P-clips for hose mounting, some split loom and zip ties(my necessity to prevent chafing ever). The GM adapter went in fine, was a bit leery of how 'loose' it felt even after being clipped in, it does move in and out about a 1/4" but this is normal and no leaks present, just make sure the clip retains the adapter. Pushing the new hose on the old hard line that went to the radiator is a bit of a bear, use lube on all your hose barbed ends to ensure easy insertion. Also when mounting the cooler, some screws were attached to the bracing of the car, pre-drilling those holes with a small bit helps tremendously, rather than risk trying to drive a self tapper in with force, slipping and putting a hole in your condenser. After install, transmission is running about 30-40 degrees cooler in normal city driving, will test to see how it does with a tow load. Under towing I would get up to just shy of 220 degrees in the Florida heat, hoping to see it stay below 190 under load. 681222

While pulling a hay trailer of hay in a field with my 2000 F250 my transmission got hot and blew a seal which leaked transmission fluid out on to my hot exhaust which then caught the ground and the truck undercarriage on fire.. After that episode I replaced the seal and fluid in the truck and purchased this aux cooler. Installed quick and with ease.. So far I havent had any more issues with over heating in the transmission....Great product have recommended this to others that pull or haul with their truck.. 414360

  • How to Mount a 7-Way Connector on a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder with the Curt Hitch # C13309
  • If you were to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13309 on your 2017 Nissan Pathfinder then you would need to mount the Curt T-Connector # C56357 directly to your rear bumper fascia using the mounting bracket # PK12711U. To avoid this you can use the Curt Easy Mount Bracket # C58000 instead. Since the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 76031 does sit below the rear bumper fascia you would be able to use the no-drill mounting bracket # C57202 along with the part # PK12711U. The Curt...

  • Transmission Cooler for 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
  • It's definitely not abnormal for your transmission fluid to heat up while towing, especially when you're going up hills that force the truck to work a lot harder. To help with this adding a transmission cooler like you mentioned is a great idea. For your 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD I highly recommend the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit w/ Fan # D13960. This cooler will do a great job of improving the performance and function of your transmission with its reversible...

  • Installation of Derale Transmission Cooler in 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • It is recommended to use the # D13504 in addition to the factory cooler on your Silverado. This will further help cool the transmission fluid. If you determine you will remove and replace, then you will need the adapter fitting # D13035. My recommendation if that is the case is to use the Derale Dyno-Cool Remote Cooler with Fan and Hose Barb Inlets # D12743. This will ensure you have proper cooling to protect your transmission with the integrated fan. Then you simply need to determine...

  • In order to install a transmission cooler such as the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets part # D13504 on your 2013 Chevrolet Silverado without altering the factory transmission lines you would need to use one of the Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter Fitting for GM part # D13035. The adapter will need to be installed on the transmission fluid return line on the radiator. The 11/32" transmission lines included in the above kit would be correct for your truck....

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler for a 2004 Honda Pilot and 2006 Chevy Avalanche
  • The Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit would be more than enough for your 2004 Honda Pilot and 2006 Chevy Avalanche. For your Pilot I recommend using part # D13503 which is 11" wide x 8-3/4" tall x 7/8" deep and for your Avalanche I recommend using part # D13504 which is slightly larger at 11" wide x 12" tall x 7/8" deep. Either of these options will work well for you and provide your vehicle with adequate transmission fluid cooling. However, in order to install a...

  • Recommended Transmission and Power Steering Cooler for 2007 Honda Pilot
  • I have not heard of that being done but it absolutely could work. What I would instead recommend is keeping your current transmission cooler and adding the Derale Electra-Cool Combo Engine and Transmission Cooler Assembly w/ Fan, -8 AN Inlets - 8 Pass # D15200 to use as an additional transmission cooler and a power steering cooler. This kit comes with the barb fittings to make the installation easy. You may also be interested in the Derale Single-Hose Transmission Cooler Installation...

  • Comparing the Derale 7000 and 8000 Series Coolers for a 2000 F-250 with the 7.3L V8 Diesel Engine
  • The Derale Series 7000 Transmission Cooler Kits like part # D13105 has a tube-fin design whereas the Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler Kits like part # D13503 has a plate-fin design. The plate-fin design is superior to the tube-fin design in that it has internal turbulators to help the oil cool faster and prevent pressure loss. For your 2000 Ford F-250 with the 7.3L V8 Diesel Engine, I recommend using the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13504 which...

This 8000 series cooler measures 11" wide x 12" tall x 7/8" deep which will be a good fit for your truck. This transmission cooler will work very well for your application and will simply connect between your radiator and transmission return line to further cool the fluid. • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 5.3 Liter
  • The general rule is to keep the transmission fluid at or below 200 degrees Fahrenheit. When towing, especially in the mountains and in summer time, the transmission fluid temperature can increase much higher so adding a supplemental cooler is a good idea. A supplemental cooler can decrease the temperature significantly due to more airflow to the fluid and more capacity (fluid) in the system. The most popular cooler for your 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 is # D13503. But if it were me...

  • Automatic Transmission Cooler and Fittings for a 2006 Ford F-150
  • For transmission cooler fittings the 6 or 10AN you see listed on coolers such as # D52506 does not make a whole lot of difference because you would want to look at complete cooler kits rather than just a replacement core. The fittings included with the cooler are already a match for it and for the hose that comes with the kits. I recommend cooler kit # D13504. It comes with a large plate-fin cooler, the means to mount it, some hose, and hose clamps. In order to install the cooler without...

For your truck I recommend the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler # D13504. The Derale # D13504 is a plate-and-fin style cooler, which is a more efficient option than the tube-and-fin style that the Flex-a-lite is. • Recommended Transmission Cooler for a 2006 Ford Expedition While Towing Through Mountains
  • For a heavy duty transmission cooler, I recommend the Derale Series 10000 Stacked-Plate Transmission Cooler Kit part # D13403 which as the name states has a stacked-plate design which is currently the most effective type in regards to a transmission cooler. • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 5.3 liter V8

But if you wanted to maximize the life of your transmission going with a supplemental cooler like the Derale part # D13504 would be a great option. You'll want to install this cooler after your factory cooler and you'll get the best cooling capabilities. For an adapter fitting to make the process easier you'd want the part # D13035. You'll use your existing lines plus the rubber lines that come with the cooler kit.

For maximum cooling, bigger is always better and plate fin coolers do a better job of dispersing heat than a tube fin cooler. For those reasons I recommend going with the Derale # D13504 which is an 11" wide x 12" tall x 7/8" deep plate fin cooler. This is a standard mount cooler that can be mounted in 3 different...

The 8000 Series would have plenty of cooling power for your needs and they are rather slim so you won't have much issue finding space to mount it nor would it affect the cooling power of your radiator. The Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter Fitting part # D13035 will also be needed for installation.
