Video Transcript for Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler Review

Speaker 1: Today we'll be having a look at the Derale 8000 Series line of plate-fin transmission coolers. Here's what our transmission cooler looks like installed. Now, the reason you're gonna want an auxiliary transmission cooler such as this one on your vehicle is quite simple. Heat is the enemy of transmissions. It is the number one cause of premature failure on your transmission. By reducing the temperature of the fluid inside your transmission, you will extend the life of it, and also have added cooling abilities.

The colder the transmission fluid is, the more heat it can actually absorb. Plus, we are expanding the cooling capacity of the system by having additional room for more fluid, which, will also help reduce the temperature. Now, you may ask, "How is this important to me because my vehicle already has a transmission cooler build inside the radiator" Well, it's quite simple. If you we're ever planning on doing aggressive driving, or towing a trailer, towing a trailer causes additional wear and tear on your transmission, and causes increased fluid temperature. By cooling the temperature down further, you are making it easier on your vehicle in order to tow that extra weight. Now, how this works being installing in addition to the factory cooler inside the radiator, the fluid will leave the factory transmission cooler from the radiator, go inside of our auxiliary cooler here that we installed, get cooled down even further, and then go back into the return line that goes into your transmission.

So, you're adding additional cooling capacity, and a secondary cooler by having this aftermarket cooler installed. Now, for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing if this cooler's gonna work for your vehicle. At its widest point, it's 11" wide. From the very top to the very bottom, it's 7 1/4" tall, and it is 7/8 of an inch thick. Now, one thing our customers have noticed, when they're installing this cooler on a vehicle, they have noticed when they're installing it inline with the factory transmission cooler, that they have needed additional hose. Now, we do have additional hose available on our website.

Now, the 8000 Series of Derale transmission coolers are plate-fin design, and the plate-fin design increase surface area. The more surface area that we have, the more cooling capacity that we have. The more of your fluid you can spread out over a larger distance, the more it can get cooled down to reduce the temperature of your transmission. This cooler also features turbulator technology to help agitate the fluid passing through it. To help with heat transfer, but also to help prevent any drop in fluid pressure. Our transmission operates off fluid pressure, so if it falls below a certain amount, it may not shift gears properly.

By maintaining our fluid pressure, our transmission will shift gears properly, and work as it's designed. This cooler has an aluminum construction, so we don't need to worry about it corroding or rusting out over the course of time. It also has a nice gloss black finish, so it'll be easily concealed behind the grill of your vehicle, and it won't be visible are you're looking at the front of your car.And that completes our look at the Derale 8000 Series line of plate-fin transmission coolers.

1989 Oldsmobile 88

I received my cooler for my 1989 Olds 88 in record time (e.g. 2 days)! After reading the instructions, I saw that the manufacturer recommends the cooler be installed in series with the cooler integral to the cars radiator. This requied addtional hose (about 3ft.). The local auto parts store carried 5/16" hose (same hose ID but a different mfr than that supplied) but found the auto parts store hose next to impossilbe to place over the cooler header fitting. I was able to install a clamp before the tubing walked itself off. I would recommend taking the cooler to the parts store and fit it up with a hose that fits properly if you need to get extra for installation. I appreciated the video that was available on your website to familiarize myself with the installation before I attempted the project. I have yet to put it to the test with a trailer in tow. Seems to be quality product. The instructions were well written. Thanks! 23813

2013 GMC Canyon

Purchased this product for my 2013 Nissan SV as was pulling a 23 ft RV on a 6500 mile out west trip from Fl. to NY, via Grand Canyon, Yellow Stone NP, and Mt. Rushmore. Had some 7% & 8% Mts. to climb, so put extra cooler on as protection. Granted, this was a second cooler, but for the money, figured well worth it. The whole trip went absolutely problem free. Trans. never got above normal operating temp. Sooooooo--for my money, this product performed better than i presumed it would. If your not sure if you need it, for the cost, but it anyway. Installation very simple, and results speak for themselves. 468695

2007 Honda Odyssey

Just installed this today on 2007 Honda Odyssey. JUST enough hose. Enough hose clamps if you reuse the factory ones on the trans connections. Did not need to take the bumper or bumper cover off, just the grill, and top and bottom covers. However, this makes it very difficult to get those zip rods attached. It was possible, but I had to get my tiny wife to fit her hands down there for the bottom ones. Now, lets see if it will save my tranny when I start towing 3500 lbs for 2 months and 4000 miles... will have to report back then and give a real rating then. 251259

2011 Subaru Outback Wagon

The cooler arrived intact on my doorstep with all the parts and pieces present, and it took about two hours to install the unit. I needed to fabricate some mounting brackets as I didn't want to use the plastic ties that go through the radiator. I have a 2011 Subaru Outback with a 3.6 motor and a 5 speed automatic. I frequently tow a boat and need to keep the tranny cool, specially during the summer months. The installation is pretty straight forward as per instructions that are included. Each vehicle will be a bit different but a home mechanic should be able to install this cooler fairly easily. 6830

I am submitting this review even though all of your customers MUST know you have one of the best, if not THE best, trailer company in the USA. You have the best products, the best selection for various applications, and no other company can beat your prices... I already purchased a lot of your products and believe me when I say I did extensive research on the exact same products before submitting my orders due to my limited funds. All of your staff are kind, courteous, patient (when it comes to helping a trailer-newbie, such as myself) understanding, very knowledgeable, and professional. Submitting an order is easy, and all of my various orders where shipped almost instantaneously and arrived on schedule. You are the best... and then, there are all the rest! Thank you for having such a great operation! 526514

2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer

The cooler is a great add-on to help guarantee the life of my transmission in my 2007 Chevy Trailblazer. The size was perfect for mounting just behind my grill and well in front of the stock radiator with barely any modification/trimming of the surrounding plastic. I have no real world temperatures but I am happy knowing the the temps in my transmission are at least a little bit cooler. The only mist-step is the included mounting pieces. While handy to get things in place after forgetting to pick-up bolts, washers and nuts, the plastic ties really didn't hold up well for the 2 weeks until I removed them. They also don't play well with the bendable mounting kit unless you have something to eat up the space when the ties are tightened as far as they can go. Again, it's minor and had I remembered to purchase the hardware I eventually used prior to the actual install, I probably wouldn't even be writing this. Also, the hose is certainly not long enough for my application. 141336

where is the cooler on a 1994 eagle vision

Most passenger cars do not have factory installed transmission coolers, including the Vision in all likelihood. On that car you will find a radiator for cooling the engine block and an A/C compressor condensor. If the Vision did have one, it would be integrated into the radiator at one of th corners.

Excellent transmission cooler with fairly easy installation. I chose to mount mine to brackets in front of the radiator rather than by pushing mounting rods through the radiator condenser. Plans for my 4-cyl Tacoma were initially for pulling a utility trailer out to my land and back. Wife wanted to get an RV and take trips. All of my purchases and installations from etrailer were based on the expert advice from the sales people. And, I actually purchased and installed all the parts before we bought an RV. This shows you that the installation videos are spot on. I could never hook up a trailer and 'try it out'. But everything worked perfectly. I kept all the weights under limit, used a weight distribution hitch, brake controller, Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System, and side mirrors, along with the class III hitch, and 4 pin and 7 pin wiring harness that I installed. My Tacoma is only rated for towing 3500# but we never had a problem pulling a 3000# load. 65 was tops on the speed and that was on a straight road. My scan gauge indicated that my transmission temp stayed at 165 except for when we traveled through stop and go city traffic. Then it rose to 185/190 for short times. Back on the road and it dropped to 165/170 a gain. I was really impressed with this little cooler. 524627

  • Connecting Transmission Cooler to 2016 Ford F-150 3.5 Ecoboost
You need to follow the lines further till you get to the radiator and disconnect them there as that is where the fittings will easier connect. The hose of the # D13502 needs to fit over a threaded fitting and not the type of fitting you have found. If you add the cooler in where the lines attach to the radiator/cooler the fittings will be compatible.

The rating are based on the Odyssey having a supplemental transmission fluid cooler installed. The maximum tow rating of 3500-lbs presumes only 2 passengers are in the vehicle. Even with 7 occupants the Odyssey still can tow 1450-lbs so given that most 8-foot tent trailers do not sleep too many...

  • What is Meant by the Different Classes of Transmission Coolers
Transmission and oil coolers are given class designations since we are in the towing business and those who tow are used to seeing class designations on hitches, ball mounts, etc. The idea is to give a general idea of the cooler's capacity, so if your vehicle has a class III hitch then a class III cooler should be fine. However, since coolers are NOT vehicle-specific you can use as large a cooler as you have space to mount it. There are various types of coolers and they can be either...

Both heat exchangers operate on the same principle, but because the # D13503 has a slightly larger surface area, the # D13503 would do a slightly better job. • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan
The effectiveness of a transmission cooler, like # D13502, depends on several factors. It depends on the size of the cooler, where it is mounted, what type of cooler, what is going to be towed, and the conditions/terrain you will be towing in. The bottom line is that if you are towing something small a short distance or something large a long distance, a cooler will help to keep transmission fluid cooler thus prolonging the life of the transmission on your 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. • Recommended Transmission Coolers for a 2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty 7.3 Liter V-8
Transmission coolers are not vehicle specific, but there are some that are recommended for your 2001 Ford F-250. The Derale, # D13502 is one of them. Basically, regardless of a super cool feature, you will need to choose a transmission cooler based on where you can mount it. The most efficient place is between the grille and AC condenser core(position A on the picture to the right). The second most efficient place is between the condenser and radiator(position B). In this position, it...

  • Can Parts Be Added To a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country to Increase The Towing Capacity
In short, no; adding a transmission cooler and distributing trailer weight does not constitute a tow package. Transmission coolers do not add to the tow capacity of the vehicle. They can reduce wear and tear on transmissions used for towing by keeping heat levels down, but they do not make the transmission capable of pulling more weight. Tow packages often include things like a heavier suspension, integrated hitch, wiring, stronger transmission, stronger/braced frames, and the larger...

  • 2014 Acura MDX Transmission Cooler Recommendation and Install Video
The best way to pick out a transmission cooler for a vehicle is to go with the largest cooler that will fit area in front of radiator. The part # D13502 measures 11" Wide x 7-1/4" tall x 7/8" deep and would be a great choice. I would however recommend going with the bigger part # D13503 since we know it will fit and we videoed the install of this on a similar Honda Pilot like your MDX. The Pilot and MDX are basically the same vehicle. Check out the video link I attached to see the install.
