  • Constructed of durable, lightweight aluminum

Specs:

  • Inlets: 11/32" hose barb
  • Overall dimensions: 13" wide x 7-1/2" tall x 3/4" deep
  • Core width: 10-1/8"
  • Distance between inlets: 6-1/4"
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: The Derale Insta-dapt radiator adapter fits most vehicles with 5/16" transmission lines, but not all. In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required for installation.

Perhaps the simplest type of heat exchanger, the tube-fin effectively cools a variety of automotive systems. The concept is simple: Fluid cools as it travels through the core by transferring heat out to the fins. The fins then provide the surface area necessary for sufficient heat exchange to take place, allowing the heat pulled from the fluid to dissipate into the surrounding air. Quick, easy and effective.

Video Transcript for Derale Transmission Coolers - Tube-Fin Cooler - D12906 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number D12906. This is the Class 2 Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit. It's going to help improve functioning and overall performance of your transmission. It's also going to extend the life of the transmission and prolongs the periods between necessary fluid changes. This is going to cut down on heat related failures. It agitates fluid with built in and boss tribulators for more efficient cooling. It's constructed of a durable lightweight aluminum and a Thermo-conductive metal is going to provide excellent transfer of heat. This is going to include a high temperature OEM spec hose, with stainless steel clamps.

The spec hose is going to give us an overall link of 4 feet. It also includes a nylon mounting rods and the instant dab radiator adapter. This is recommended for small to mid size trucks and SUVs. The inlets have 11 32nd of an inch hose barb. The overall dimensions, the total width is going to give us some measurement of 13 inches. It's going to give us an overall height of 7 and a half inches.

When we measure the depth from edge to edge its going to measure a 3 quarters of an inch deep. The core width, from edge to edge is going to measure right around 10 inches. Then the distance that we have between our inlets, this here and this here, center on center, is going to measure 6 and 1 quarter of an inch. Please keep in mind that the Durale Insta Dab Radiator Adapter will fit most vehicles with 5-16-7 inch transmission lines but it won't fit all of them. In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required to get this to install correctly. That's going to do it for today's review for part number D12906. This is the Class 2 Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit.

This product is great and installation was not bad at all. Only issue I had was that the GM radiator adaptor should come with this unit when you purchase it for a GM truck. Not as an add-on. Thought I could get it at GM but no go. I Had to work with hoses over 30 min to get them over the fittings even with trans. fluid on the hose and male fitting. So far it looks like trans temp has dropped 30 dg. 134485

2009 Audi A6

I purchased this for my C6 Corvette A6 transmission. I did, however, bypass the radiator and only use the transmission cooler for the C6. I purchased and used the Derale Radiator Adapter fitting 259-13035 for both the top and bottom and just capped them off to keep debris out of the reservoir. I also had to make some custom mounting brackets. This is an excellent product and it keeps the tranny in a great temperature range. 552474

1999 Toyota 4Runner

Ive got a 1999 4runner that had the unfortunate luck of having the integrated transmission cooler line rupture inside my radiator. needless to say, the transmission didnt agree very well with having engine coolant running through it and finally died out on me. I bought this transmission cooler to isolate the transmission and the engine cooling systems. The cooler arrived a day ahead of schedule, which is always a bonus. I didnt rate it at 5 stars because I havent had a chance to install it yet and see how it performs, but judging by the reviews that I have read so far, the customer service provided and the prompt delivery, I would say that this transmission cooler will keep my truck running for a good long while. Everything pictured arrived in the box and I have no doubt that it will perform as expected. I will definitely recommend this product and this company to my friends! 30988

Very easy install, absolutely no leaks anywhere in the system after putting it into service. I did have to get additional hose for the install due to the location I chose for the cooler (personal preference). I centered it on the bumper side of the radiator to provide the best air flow. Remember to get a quart of transmission fluid to accomodate the larger system volume after the install. I took my grill off to provide the most room for putting the cooler in rather than trying to wedge it between the radiator and grill, made install the nylon fasteners through the radiator and cooler much easier. Should last for many years. 61081

2012 Nissan Rogue

I ordered this cooler for my daughter's 2012 Nissan Rogue to fix CVT transmission heating up causing it to into limp mode. When I got ready to install, I found there was no place to connect the hoses to the transmission. The vehicle only had the direct "bee hive" cooler. Install was delayed while waiting to get a "4 tube bee hive" from a different supplier for an additional $114. 551625

2005 Honda Pilot

After one of use on a 2005 Honda Pilot, everything is holding up just fine. The one star less is because of the difficulty in installing it on this particular vehicle. Although this is a universal component, it is MUCH easier to install on pickup trucks. Best of luck with a brand new rubber hose going on with any sort of ease. 521316

Our installers typically use some transmission fluid to make installing the rubber hose on the Insta-dapt fitting easier.

Super easy install. With the installation video on Youtube it took out any of the guess work. The hose could stand to be about 3" - 5" longer if you are going to center in the A frame of an older chevy grill (I have an 06 Avalanche. I had to offset to the passenger side to use the supplied hoses) But, you can get a longer hose easy enough. Just ran over the pass and back and no leaks. Looks good so far! 377410

What is the rated towing weight for a 1999 Honda CR-V? Does a trannie cooler install fairly easily on the Honda CR-Vs? What is the most effective mounting location for the finned cooler? How does the addition of a trannie cooler effect the volume of fluid and fluid level reading on the dip stick? Thanks for your time and expertise.

-- comment by: Robb B - 10/22/2013

The towing capacity question is a loaded one. For that, I would refer back to the owners manual. It can vary depending on engine, transmission, drive configuration and more. Furthermore, Honda has some very specific guidelines regarding towing so it's best to defer to them. Installing a trans cooler on a full size truck can be easier because of the extra space, but it is not particularly difficult on any vehicle. We actually have a video of a cooler being installed on a 2006 C-V. We remove the front bumper cover for the video, but you may find you do not need to. (See link). The most effective location will be in front of both the radiator and the A/C condenser. As you move behind each cooling device, the efficiency diminishes. We put ours in front of everything on the 2006 in the video. For fluid capacity, plan on an extra 1/2 quart. Depending on cooler size and construction, it will vary some, but 1/2 qt. is a good rule of thumb.

This is a customer service review not a product review. Leeza J. was very helpful in helping me get everything needed for adding a secondary transmission cooler to my Chevy truck. I ordered 3 different items and the one item was not in stock and I was promised that I would be notified when it arrived. I was notified that the item was in stock 2 days later and I received the package a few days after that. Very good service that impressed me. 377288

Review from a similar Derale Dyno-Cool in Transmission Coolers

I mounted this fan in the puller position on my auxiliary transmission cooler so that I can tow a 15ft travel trailer with my minivan. Installation was sweet. There was an instruction page in the box and enough parts for mounting. I was surprised at how much air this thing moves. I wouldn't call it noisy since the fan spins smoothly and quietly when I tested it out in the open, but when mounted in the congested grill area of my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan I can definitely hear it hum more than the stock radiator fan. It pushes that much air. I would definitely recommend this product. 413989

good product form a great company ! my only complaint is this was listed as for my specific truck, but the "insta-dapt" supplied doesn't fit the Dodge truck of my year. even doing my research ahead of time, it seems to be hit or miss whether it would fit as some of them come with 5/16 fittings and some (like mine) come with 9/16 fittings. it doesnt matter the engine size, even other 3.7L dodge trucks of the same year have 5/16 fittings... I think Dodge made a change middle year, but never let the consumer know as mine is a late year '04. no dig deal as I was able to assemble it anyways and got it up and running great and both the radiator and trans are running much cooler now ! I attached the D12902 to the bumper as you will see in attached images. 2 attached images are just before finishing, bumper hasnt been attached yet, one of them is after everything was complete. 189096

Hi I need to know at what temp. is exactly activated Thanks

-- comment by: LIVIU - 08/09/2013

1868

This fan does not include a thermostat system. It can be wired into the original electrical system and will then operate according to the thermostat system in the vehicle. It can also be wired to an on/off switch but that is usually only done if off-road and race applications. We have plenty of thermostat options, sold separately, for determining the temperature at which the fan kicks on. For example, part D16735 kicks on at 180 degrees and shuts off at 165 degrees. Part D16759 is an adjustable thermostat system. Turn-on temperate can be set any where between 150 and 240 degrees. The turn-off temperature will always be 10 degrees less than the turn-on temperature.

I bought this cooler for my 2007 Chevy avalanche LTZ 4X4 with 5.3 motor. I also bought the adapter the adapter D13035 for my truck as well. It was a quick and easy install. I just got it installed on 2/2/2018 and took the truck for a drive and it has dropped my transmission temp at least 40 degrees. It took me around 40 min to install. Very Happy with this new addition to my truck. FYI if you buy this unit to make it easier i would order an extra Line because the one line will be cutting close to reaching location. 472461

It appears that my transmission temp dropped about 40-60° adding this cooler. The hose was pretty hard to attach to the cooler, even with lubrication. The hose was also to small for my vehicle so I had to source other parts to make it work. I installed it on a 2017 explorer. 661750

Review from a similar Derale Dyno-Cool in Transmission Coolers

Installed this in a 2017 Honda Ridgeline. Mounted it above the factory cooler that was already in the truck. (Flat fin side towards the a/c condenser). I used the insta-mount zip tie kit and also the flex metal mounts to anchor the cooler to the top of the factory cooler bracket as close to the a/c condenser as possible. The vertical bracket (part of the truck) that runs right down the middle of the a/c condenser has to be cut. All fairly minor fabrication. Hack saw and hand drill stuff. The fan has to be reversed to become a pusher. Followed the hood release cable from the interior to run 12 volts to power the fan on at ignition. Haven’t hooked the trailer up yet so I don’t know if this will resolve the hot tranny situation. ( I could smell the tranny getting hot before especially when we stopped at lights). Change your fluid too. etrailer delivered quickly and the cooler was well boxed and untouched. 656607

  • Could a Fairly Handy Person Install a Transmission Cooler on a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan
  • A fairly handy person could install a transmission cooler onto a vehicle pretty easily. I have installed a cooler on two of my cars without a problem and I consider myself fairly handy. I attached an installation video of a transmission cooler being installed onto a vehicle to give you an idea of what it is like. Most vehicle will not require the removal of the front end like the vehicle in the video, so do not let that discourage you. I also attached an FAQ article on transmission...

  • Can a Transmission Cooler Bypass the Factory Cooler on a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder
  • A lot of people with Nissan vehicles are looking to bypass the factory cooler contained in the radiator like on your 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. The coolers we carry are designed to supplement the factory cooler although some people have used them to replace the factory cooler. You would want to go with the largest cooler possible if you bypass the factory cooler and the inlet/outlets on the radiator for the factory cooler will have to be plugged. Or instead of the largest cooler you would...

  • How to Determine How Much Fluid Should be Added After Installing Transmission Cooler
  • What you will want to do is check the transmission fluid level after installing the Derale part # D12906 and then add as much as needed. Most likely around a 1/2 qt would be needed but that will depend too on if you spill any fluid (most do) and how long of lines you use.

  • Transmission Cooler and Thermostat for a 2011 Subaru Forester
  • Transmission fluid cannot be overcooled. But in the winter when the weather is cold you would either need to let your 2011 Subaru Forester warm up a little longer or you can install a thermostat with the cooler so that it will only send fluid through the cooler once the temperature is high enough. You can use Derale Fluid Control Thermostat Kit w/ 3/8" NPT Ports Item # D13011 with mounting bracket kit # D25793. The fluid will bypass a cooler, such as # D12906, if the fluid temperature...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2005 Acura MDX Towing a 3,750 Pound Boat and Trailer
  • The Class of transmission cooler you use will depend more on where you can mount it. The most efficient place is in front of the AC condenser. You could then use a Class I cooler, like # D12901. If mounted behind the condenser, I would go with a Class II like # D12906. If mounted behind the radiator I would go with a Class III like # D13502. The problem is that the further away from the front of the vehicle a cooler is mounted, the less airflow it receives. The less airflow a coolers...

  • Tips for Keeping a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado Cool While Towing a Trailer Into the Rockies
  • It sounds like you have really done as much as you can to ensure that your 2008 Chevrolet Colorado has the advantage while towing. I think you stated the reason without realizing it, you are going up steep inclines while towing a trailer. Even without a trailer your vehicle will experience extra heat due to the strain of driving uphill. Add to that the weight of a trailer and whatever cargo that if put into the Colorado itself and that is why you cannot go 60-65 mph safely. The most...

  • Installation of Derale Transmission Cooler # D12906 on a 2003 Acura MDX
  • A transmission cooler will attach in-line with the transmission fluid return line on your 2003 Acura MDX. The best way to determine which line on a transmission cooler is the return line from the radiator is to use the following procedure: 1. Start engine while engine is cold 2. Place transmission shift lever in drive for no more than 10 seconds. 3. Stop engine and remove keys 4. Identify the transmission fluid return line by feeling both lines. The coolest line is the return line. You...

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler for a 2000 Buick Century
  • A class I or class II transmission cooler should work well for your needs. I recommend class I transmission cooler # D13101, or a class II cooler like # D12906 would also work to help with the issue you are having during warm weather. Both of these Derale coolers are designed to cool very efficiently and install easily, and either one would be a good choice for your 2000 Buick Century. In addition to the transmission cooler, you would also need the custom fittings # 41418 to match...

  • Recommended Derale Transmission Cooler for 2012 Toyota RAV4 with 3.5L V6 Engine
  • Adding a supplementary transmission cooler to a vehicle that tows a trailer is a great way to reduce the thermal stress on the transmission. For your 2012 Toyota RAV4 with the V6 engine the most popular cooler is the Class III Derale # D13503, and this also happens to offer the highest cooling efficiency of all such products available for your RAV4. This is a complete kit with all needed parts. I linked a couple of help articles on the topic of transmission coolers.

  • Suitability of 2008 Jeep Compass for Towing Trailer Weighing 1800 Lbs
  • If the weights you have given me are correct, you should be able to tow the trailer. Keep in mind that you are less than 200 lbs away from your towing capacity. Any extra gear on that trailer could place you over the towing capacity of your Compass which could possibly cause damage to the hitch or the vehicle. Since you are so close to the towing capacity of the vehicle, a transmission cooler would be a wise investment. I would recommend the Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler,...

  • Removal of the Front Bumper and Grill to Install a Transmission Cooler on a 2009 Subaru Forester
  • From the research I did it looks like you will need to remove the front grill and bumper to install a transmission cooler like the Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit # D12906. There will be 16 plastic rivets that will need to be removed. You can use a screwdriver to pop them out. Take your time getting these out so you do not break them. Once the grill and bumper are removed you will have plenty of room to work to install a transmission cooler like the # D12906. I am...

  • Transmission Cooler for 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • The Derale # D12906 is a universal-fit aftermarket part that will fit your 2007 Grand Cherokee if the space behind the grille and in front of the A/C condenser and radiator can accommodate its 13 by 7-3/4 inch dimensions. If the available space is to small to allow installation of the D12906, we have smaller plate-fin style coolers like part # D13502 that are actually more efficient at cooling your transmission fluid. This cooler would typically be installed so it would be last in line...

  • Transmission Cooler for 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i W/CVT Transmission.
  • If the CVT transmission has cooling lines running from the transmission to the radiator (some do, some don't), you can install a transmission cooler. A transmission cooler is an effective and inexpensive insurance policy for your transmission, especially if the trailer you'll be towing is close to the towing capacity of the vehicle or if you'll be towing in mountainous or hilly terrain. If your transmission does have lines, we recommend getting the biggest cooler that will fit in the...

  • 2006 Toyota RAV4 Transmission Cooler Recommendation
  • As long as the transmission of your 2006 Toyota RAV4 has external lines you can install a transmission cooler. If you find the radiator there should be two metal lines that run to it that would be used for the factory cooler. You can also check out the transmission, if you find lines running from it those can be used for installing a cooler. The part # D12906 is a very popular option that would work well as long as you have room for it. I actually have it on my car and it does a great...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder Towing a 1900 lb Trailer
  • There really is not a down side to using a transmission cooler on a vehicle. It has been proven that transmission coolers will prolong the life of a transmission. Especially when the vehicle is towing a trailer. I would strongly recommend you install one since you will be pulling a 1,900 lb trailer with your 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. The power switch might enhance the shift points so that it will perform better while towing, but it will not prevent excess heat from building up in your transmission...
