2005 Dodge Grand Caravan - Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets - Class II - Efficient

11" Wide x 5-3/4" tall x 7/8" deep, efficient heat exchanger will prolong the life of your transmission and improve its overall performance. Specifically designed for Dodge Grand Caravans with late-model, electronic overdrive transmissions.

Features:

  • Prolongs life of transmission
  • Improves overall performance
  • Prevents heat-related failures
  • Has furnace-brazed aluminum construction and 3/4" wide turbulator plates for more efficient cooling
  • Includes complete mounting kit, OEM spec hose with stainless steel clamps and Insta-dapt radiator adapter
  • Recommended for small to mid-size trucks and SUVs

Specs:

  • Inlets: 11/32" hose barb
  • Overall dimensions: 11" wide x 5-3/4" tall x 7/8" deep
  • Distance between inlets: 10-1/4"
  • Mounting dimensions: 4-1/2" tall by either 5-1/2" wide or 6-3/4" wide
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: The Derale Insta-dapt radiator adapter fits most vehicles with 5/16" transmission lines, but not all. In some cases, additional fittings or alteration of the OEM lines or hoses may be required for installation.

One of the more popular cooling systems available, the radiator-style, plate-and-fin heat exchanger provides increased surface area so that fluids can spread out along the finned chambers to cool faster. In addition to the increased surface area, this cooler also features turbulator technology, whereby fluids are agitated continuously, not only to facilitate heat transfer, but also to prevent any undesirable drop in pressure.

Video Transcript for Derale Series 8000 Transmission Cooler Review

Speaker 1: Today we'll be having a look at the Derale 8000 Series line of plate-fin transmission coolers. Here's what our transmission cooler looks like installed. Now, the reason you're gonna want an auxiliary transmission cooler such as this one on your vehicle is quite simple. Heat is the enemy of transmissions. It is the number one cause of premature failure on your transmission. By reducing the temperature of the fluid inside your transmission, you will extend the life of it, and also have added cooling abilities.

The colder the transmission fluid is, the more heat it can actually absorb. Plus, we are expanding the cooling capacity of the system by having additional room for more fluid, which, will also help reduce the temperature. Now, you may ask, "How is this important to me because my vehicle already has a transmission cooler build inside the radiator" Well, it's quite simple. If you we're ever planning on doing aggressive driving, or towing a trailer, towing a trailer causes additional wear and tear on your transmission, and causes increased fluid temperature. By cooling the temperature down further, you are making it easier on your vehicle in order to tow that extra weight. Now, how this works being installing in addition to the factory cooler inside the radiator, the fluid will leave the factory transmission cooler from the radiator, go inside of our auxiliary cooler here that we installed, get cooled down even further, and then go back into the return line that goes into your transmission.

So, you're adding additional cooling capacity, and a secondary cooler by having this aftermarket cooler installed. Now, for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing if this cooler's gonna work for your vehicle. At its widest point, it's 11" wide. From the very top to the very bottom, it's 7 1/4" tall, and it is 7/8 of an inch thick. Now, one thing our customers have noticed, when they're installing this cooler on a vehicle, they have noticed when they're installing it inline with the factory transmission cooler, that they have needed additional hose. Now, we do have additional hose available on our website.

Now, the 8000 Series of Derale transmission coolers are plate-fin design, and the plate-fin design increase surface area. The more surface area that we have, the more cooling capacity that we have. The more of your fluid you can spread out over a larger distance, the more it can get cooled down to reduce the temperature of your transmission. This cooler also features turbulator technology to help agitate the fluid passing through it. To help with heat transfer, but also to help prevent any drop in fluid pressure. Our transmission operates off fluid pressure, so if it falls below a certain amount, it may not shift gears properly.

By maintaining our fluid pressure, our transmission will shift gears properly, and work as it's designed. This cooler has an aluminum construction, so we don't need to worry about it corroding or rusting out over the course of time. It also has a nice gloss black finish, so it'll be easily concealed behind the grill of your vehicle, and it won't be visible are you're looking at the front of your car.And that completes our look at the Derale 8000 Series line of plate-fin transmission coolers.

Product was as described on the website. Installation took a few hours - no where near as easy as shown on the installation video - to install on my 2004 Alero. The challenge is that the upper line transmission cooler line is the line you have to route the cooler hoses to and mounting the cooler and getting the lines routed up to the top of the radiotr houseing required removal of the front bumper, loosening the radiator mount (from below the car - there are two wing nuts) and then CAREFULLY drilling a 11/2" hole in the plastic molding that completely covers the front upper portion of the radiator. Then you can route the hoses through the hole. I bought the optional GM fittings and that made connecting the hoses very easy. 17938

Looks like its well made but hose is only about half of what I will need as this does not just enhance the build-in cooler but must be connected all the way back to the transmission from in front of the radiator. Install will be in a 2015 Subaru Forester 2.5i. 392008

2003 Honda CR-V

I found etrailer.com on random search in the internet after we bought our CRV and started researching hitches. U-Haul, whom I use often I use often and like very much, wanted $400 for the hitch, harness and transmission cooler. I found all three on etrailer for $200, and they delivered it quickly (and I mean quickly) and it wasl well packaged, etc. I figured I was a handy person, and thought how hard could it be? Well not only where the products high quality, the instructions clear and easy, they videos are a life savers for people who do better "seeing" a process, rather than "read" about a process. The hitch took me 20 minutes, the harness 20, and the Transmission Cooler about 45. Thank you etrailer for the pleasent experience, I am already going to order a few accessories for ouu CRV, and guess where I will be buying them! In case is was unclear, etrailer all the way. 136377

Installed the Derale 8000 because my 2001 Buick Century would shift hard when it got hot outside. So far i've driven it a week and it's been shifting smooth. The Derale Snap-In Radiator Adapter installed easily with no leaks. I suggest getting extra hose. Needed another 12" to complete. 199118

I was lucky enough to have Etrailer install this on my Grand Caravan (they made a video). I drove 800 miles towing a 6x12 enclosed trailer with NO problems. It kept my transmission cool towing through the mountains. I have towed smaller trailers with the minivan that made it shift strange. After installation, all better. 17549

Have a 1998 Lincoln Mark 8 w/ 4 speed automatic which retails for no less than $ 4000.00 - Having this potential monkey on my back , I decided to invest in a trans cooler. Fabricated mounts and bolted on , used double flare connection to cooling line w/ barbed fitting ; barbed fitting @ radiator fitting. Used 2 hose clamps @ cooler, one clamp on each barbed fitting . Could only mount with fittings to left ,fluid leaves radiator , enters cooler @ top ( to reduce pump load ), comes out of bottom & returns to tranny. No trans temp. guage, but cooler gets hot @ idle, verifying cooler works . Well constructed and sturdy, easy to mount ; comes with instructions. 296567

2006 Pontiac Grand Prix

My tranny fluid was running hot on my 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. The transmission on these cars is known to not be able to handle the power of the engine too well so I wanted to do anything to help it out. I had this cooler installed to supplement the factory cooler. I am not towing anything so a large cooler isn't a necessity. So far, this cooler is working as I expected, keeping the fluid below 200 degrees with the temperature outside above 100! Though a larger cooler would probably get the temp closer to where I'd like it, there is not much room in the engine compartment for something much bigger on my car. 19828

The product arrived in a timely manner and was as advertised. The product included all hardware needed to install it onto the vehicle. The only problem I had was identifying the transmission lines and determining which line was the hot side and which was the return side. This was no reflection on the product, but more detailed installation instructions would have been nice. The installation videos on the website contributed greatly to my decision to purchase the product. 17382

I didn't know how to select the right trans cooler for my towing needs and I probably would have figured out how to mount it but with the help I got from your web site, I knew I had the right cooler and I knew how to install it in my vehicle. I saw a video of a cooler just like mine installed in a truck exactly like mine. How cool is that? etrailer.com is now my only source for trailer and towing parts. 408106

Item arrived promptly and well packaged. Installed the cooler on my 2001 silvarado z71 5.3L on a warm Redding California afternoon 105f. It only took about 1/2 hour to install it inline with my stock cooler. Promptly the next day I pulled around my utility trailer loaded down with a 8x12 wood shed, outside temp on my mirror was reading 117f. Two hours of pulling and pushing and the shed was in place. It was hot I was hot truck was not even with the AC on full. The next punishment will be pulling the 25' camper kids dog and all essential beverages over the mountains in the heat to the coast. 201919

TannerI mounted the cooler on the passenger side of the radiator using the stock transmission cooler mount and the headlight mount. The cooler was mounted sideways and all the way to the top of the compartment i dry fit it and made sure the plastic radiator cover would still snap into place as well as the hood closed with no issue before installing it inline with my stock cooler. Tight fit but it works and works well.

This cooler was delivered promptly and as advertized and will fit in front of the radiator and behind the grill. The 4 foot length of cooler hose is not long enough to install this cooler on a 2006 Dodge 5.9 diesel. I am a bit disappointed that I will need an additional 4 feet of cooler hose to complete this installation. I may also have to purchase a fitting but I'll find out later. I don't have pictures yet as the cooler has not been installed. I don't mind sending pictures later. Thanks, 14753

I just want to thank the customer service team at etrailer.com. I got very quick responses with very helpful and educated professional answers within minutes through email. The product selection and prices are great and so is the service team. I didn't get to install my new transmission cooler yet but I can say the kit has every single thing I need including awesome instructions with clear diagrams and everything and the staff was very helpful helping me choose what fittings I needed to avoid having to cut my stock transmission lines. They seem to have all their bases covered. I'll provide pictures after the install. Thanks etrailer staff I appreciate all the info and great products. Keep it up. Neil Borne 231819

This transmission cooler fit perfectly behind my grill. I mounted it on brackets in lieu of a direct mount on the radiator. I’m glad you recommended the GM adaptor hose fitting as my application would not work with the Insta-Dapt which was not compatible. Works great towing my 4,000# trailer in this Florida heat. 524895

It was a pretty straight forward installation. I did have to remove the battery and tray as the factory spring hose clamps were positioned such that I could only get at them from the top, couldn't squeeze the clamps from a below angle. Thankfully I watched their video before ordering to see I needed another length of hose to finish the install. Took about 3 hours and seems to work well. 568120

Product was just as expcted but I did not care for the mounting so I made my own mount, two bars across the bracket that holds the hood release. This centered the unit near the bottom, for the connections the new hose reached a hose between two steel lines from the outlet of the factory cooler. I bought two 3/8 barbed couplings and 4 more hose clamps I cut the factory hose and series the unit to these hoses a few tyraps to stop chafing and i was done. 73520

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

The cooler is a great add-on to help guarantee the life of my transmission in my 2007 Chevy Trailblazer. The size was perfect for mounting just behind my grill and well in front of the stock radiator with barely any modification/trimming of the surrounding plastic. I have no real world temperatures but I am happy knowing the the temps in my transmission are at least a little bit cooler. The only mist-step is the included mounting pieces. While handy to get things in place after forgetting to pick-up bolts, washers and nuts, the plastic ties really didn't hold up well for the 2 weeks until I removed them. They also don't play well with the bendable mounting kit unless you have something to eat up the space when the ties are tightened as far as they can go. Again, it's minor and had I remembered to purchase the hardware I eventually used prior to the actual install, I probably wouldn't even be writing this. Also, the hose is certainly not long enough for my application. 141336

Installed this on my 04 denali xl. Took me about an hour. I bolted mine on instead of using the zip ties. It is the right size to fit between the grill and the condenser. Right next to the tiny factory installed cooler that doesnt get any air because of the huge gmc logo. I installed mine in line with the factory cooler. It keeps the tranny dramatically cooler when towing. It is an inexpensive tranny saver. Etrailer has a great how to video that works for almost all the 02 to 07 yukon and suburbans. Dont forget the fitting adapter that fits into the cooler. 565715

I decided to install the Derale 8000 on my 2005 Honda Odyssey with 57,500 miles as an investment in hopes to prolong the life of vehicle. The Derale 8000 series came with complete with all the parts needed for my installation. I had zero trips to the auto parts store. I'm not a mechanic but the installation was fairly easy. The videos provided by etrailer was extremely helpful and gave me confidence to do the install. The hose, provided, fits perfectly into the factory Honda hose outlet from the radiator. Also, as mentioned by other reviewers, installing the hose is a difficult even with transmission fluid to lubricate. However, I had a hard time trying to secure the cooler, due to the tight space between the condenser and radiator. A long cutting pliers/scissor would help and a lots of patience. Install with confidence! Thanks Etrailer for the awesome instructional videos! 391814

The cooler was exactly as described. The best part was the instructional videos showing 2 different installs on Honda Odysseys. Just installed this today on 2007 Honda Odyssey. JUST enough hose. Enough hose clamps if you reuse the factory ones on the trans connections. Did not need to take the bumper or bumper cover off, just the grill, and top and bottom covers. However, this makes it very difficult to get those zip rods attached. It was possible, but I had to get my tiny wife to fit her hands down there for the bottom ones. Now, lets see if it will save my tranny when I start towing 3500 lbs for 2 months and 4000 miles... will have to report back then and give a real rating then. 251259

Great value for the price and free shipping, package arrived on schedule, was packed extremely well, (I would know, retired Postal mail carrier), Derale 13504 transmission cooler was exactly what was described should work well for me to tow a 3500lb travel trailer with my 2008 GMC Acadia. Will be installing the cooler this week. This definitely should keep my transmission from over heating, it's rated somewhete at 22500 GVW. My vehicle and travel trailer CGVW is approximately 9000 lbs. 462784

The Derale 13504 has kept my transmission from over heating, have towed my travel trailer over 3600 miles no problems with transmission over heating in my 2008 Acadia SLT. Will be installing a auxiliary fan in front of my radiator to assist when in towing this summer. .

Purchased this product for my 2013 Nissan SV as was pulling a 23 ft RV on a 6500 mile out west trip from Fl. to NY, via Grand Canyon, Yellow Stone NP, and Mt. Rushmore. Had some 7% & 8% Mts. to climb, so put extra cooler on as protection. Granted, this was a second cooler, but for the money, figured well worth it. The whole trip went absolutely problem free. Trans. never got above normal operating temp. Sooooooo--for my money, this product performed better than i presumed it would. If your not sure if you need it, for the cost, but it anyway. Installation very simple, and results speak for themselves. 468695

I received the cooler on time and in fine condition. The factory box was well packed and all items were enclosed. I mounted the cooler using flat aluminum bar stock so I could leave a one inch space between the cooler and the front of the A/C condenser as I feel this will give me maximum transmission oil cooling. I used this product to replace a tube and fin cooler which was not doing the job even when not towing my trailers. I have not towed with this cooler yet but due to its construction I feel it will greatly reduce my transmission oil temperatures. Walt 9-22-2018 567912

I have a 2010 Silverado 4x4 with a 6speed auto trans. I load it with a 3000 bl. cab over camper and take on the Sierra Nevadas a lot. Trans temp is very important to me as a former GM certified automatic transmission technician. For two week prion to installing this cooler I documented my trans temp reading under different driving conditions and ambient temperatures. Trans ran consistently between 180 to 210 degrees with no load in the bed. After installing this cooler and driving it under the same conditions as before, I have a clear in temp by 40 degrees. I also notice that if temp goes up from climbing a large grade, it s back down MUCH faster. A lot of these reviews talk about how easy it was to install the cooler... I would like to stress how well it works!!

The cooler arrived intact on my doorstep with all the parts and pieces present, and it took about two hours to install the unit. I needed to fabricate some mounting brackets as I didn't want to use the plastic ties that go through the radiator. I have a 2011 Subaru Outback with a 3.6 motor and a 5 speed automatic. I frequently tow a boat and need to keep the tranny cool, specially during the summer months. The installation is pretty straight forward as per instructions that are included. Each vehicle will be a bit different but a home mechanic should be able to install this cooler fairly easily. 6830

this product is of good quality and a good size to make a big difference on the cooling of the transmission, so much that when its spring winter or fall, when i'm just driving around town the engine wont get to operating temperature until i drive for about 30 min. It's an easy fix to just use a piece of cardboard over the transmission coolers when its cold out and your not towing. Then the temp comes up as usual. When towing just make sure to keep the bugs out of your rad and coolers. Towed my trailer through the mountains where my truck over heated last year and had no problems this year. truck is a 2012 ecoboost 3.5l f150. Needed a few fitting but the local farm supply store had them, i hooked it up in series behind of my stock cooler, the fluid goes from the rad to this cooler then the stock cooler. 568743

Installed this in a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder. Fit is excellent. I wanted to remove the factory radiator connection as this is a common point of failure allowing coolent to enter the ATF. This is plumbed from the transmission to the factory cooler, then to this new cooler, then back to the transmission. The only thing extra I had to buy was a 3/8 double barb to connect to an existing hose. This cooler adds about half a quart of ATF to the system. I can't speak for any temp drops as I don't have a temp gauge installed yet. 101344

Most passenger cars do not have factory installed transmission coolers, including the Vision in all likelihood. On that car you will find a radiator for cooling the engine block and an A/C compressor condensor. If the Vision did have one, it would be integrated into the radiator at one of th corners.

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

Hardest part of the installation was confirming which of the lines was the hot and which was cold. After that, installation on my 2005 Pilot was easy. Just follow directions or find a YouTube video. Tranny coolers are a must if you're planning on taxing the transmission by hauling/pulling or doing lots of hill climbing with a load in the truck/SUV. Shipping was super fast and customer service follow up on my order was great. I will absolutely buy all my trailer stuff from these guys. 291142

The install was very simple. This installation video you had was great! We just returned from a 400 mile road trip which put the cooler to good use with no leaks or issues. Great service and a good price. 72125

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

I ordered a transmission cooler for my '09 Tahoe that, even with the small cooler for the towing package, just could not handle the California/Oregon mountains. I had my trusted mechanic install it (he has much greater expertise than I). I've just returned from an identical trip over those same mountains. What a difference! Instead of topping out at 230 degrees (dangerous), I topped out at 183, only 13 degrees from normal operating temp. I ordered the cooler and installation hardware. It's been awesome not to have to worry anymore about transmission burn out hauling my trailer that is 25% BELOW advertised towing capacity of this vehicle. Kudos to etrailer for offering such great products! 302744

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

I installed this transmission oil cooler in my 2003 Honda Odyssey a year ago because this model van is known for its transmission overheating and failure issues. This cooler is more than adequate for the task. Plus, installation was a breeze thanks to the helpful video. I wish I would of have installed this cooler years ago. It would of saved me a tranny rebuild. 246760

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

Installed the product today. My installation is pretty unique on the Jeep Liberty CRD. This vehicle has a pusher fan in front of the stack of heat exchangers (Condenser/Trans cooler, intercooler, radiator), so the "zip tie" installation is not an option. Also, the stock trans cooler, which is the bottom 1/4 of the A/C condenser, has a different type of fitting on it. Product seems to work as intended. Hoses were a bit hard to get onto the barbs, even with a little transmission fluid as a lubricant. 47086

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

Fabulous. For a 2002 Odyssey don't remove factory fittings from RADIATOR. Remove hoses from steel tubes that come off the radiator and use a double male fitting from the hardware store for the return hose. To make life really easy, download a copy of Honda's installation for Factory Cooler to figure exactly where the return lines are. Rip off the bumper. Get er done. 1 hr. The whole car drives different. Smoother. Quieter. 39178

Review from a similar Derale Series 8000 in Transmission Coolers

Excellent quality and build. I installed this in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. I wanted a factory look installation so I mounted the bottom of the cooler in the factory bracket located mid way and made a bracket to mount the top of the cooler. I mounted it with the hoses downward so they will not be visible from the outside of the car. See pics for details on the brackets and mounting. 176500

  • Will a 2016 Ford Fusion SE Tow a 1,100 Lb Trailer
  • I cannot recommend that you tow a 1,100 lb trailer with your 2016 Ford Fusion SE that has a maximum towing capacity of 1,000 lbs for liability reasons but in all honesty, you would most likely be just fine. Personally, I wouldn't really be concerned with towing over capacity by only 100 lbs. I would just avoid hilly areas if at all possible. In order to tow a trailer with your Fusion you will need a trailer hitch, trailer wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. Also, if you will...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch, Wiring, and Transmission Cooler for 2015 Honda Odyssey
  • Starting with the trailer hitch for your 2015 Honda Odyssey I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III # 75270 because of its robust capacities (4,500 pounds towing and 675 pounds of tongue weight) indicating a stronger unit along with its simple installation process that just requires lining up the hitch to existing holes in the Odyssey's frame. I have attached an installation video on the 2015 Odyssey that you can use for reference. Then for trailer wiring the Tekonsha T-One # 118521...

  • Transmission Cooler for 2008 Toyota Sienna Towing a 1993 Coleman Newport Pioneer Pop-Up Trailer
  • Official towing capacities can't be changed by anyone but the vehicle manufacturer. We can certainly help you pick out a transmission cooler for a 2008 Toyota Sienna but when it comes down to whether or not it will gain you any towing capacity we can't give you any numbers. Only Toyota could. For a transmission cooler the Derale kit part # D13501 would work great and could potentially be all that you'd need.

  • Recommended Towing Package for a 2011 Mazda 3 Sedan
  • We have everything you are looking for, but I must warn you that Mazda does not recommend towing with this vehicle, so you would be doing so at your own risk. The other complication is that there is no stated towing capacity for your vehicle because it is not recommended for towing. You will want to be very careful if you choose to tow. For a trailer hitch I recommend the Draw-Tite Class I Hitch # 24842. This hitch as a Gross Trailer Weight Capacity of 2,000 lbs. and a Tongue Weight...

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler for a 2011 Honda Odyssey
  • The Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler, # D13501, that you referenced will work well on your 2011 Honda Odyssey. The Derale cooler is designed to be a supplemental cooler that will work with your factory OEM transmission cooler. The cooler will be mounted ideally at the front of the radiator for the most efficient operation. However, not all applications will allow you to mount the cooler in this position. For a brake controller I recommend Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, # 90195. This is one of our most popular brake controllers and the easiest to use and setup. To wire the Prodigy brake controller on your 2006 Honda Odyssey you will need to have a 4-Pole trailer connector on your vehicle. Then, you will have to hardwire the brake controller...

  • Recommended Transmission Coolers for 2012 Chevy Traverse Pulling 3700 lb Camper
  • Towing in mountainous areas can be hard on a transmission, so installing a cooler is an inexpensive way to provide protection. The most efficient place to install a transmission cooler is directly behind the grille, in front of the radiator and A/C condenser. We recommend measuring the available space in this area, and then choosing the largest transmission cooler that will fit. The # D13501 is a great choice, but if you have the available space, I would go with the # D13502 which measures...

  • Transmission and Power Steering Cooler Options for a 2006 Honda Pilot Towing 1520 Pound Trailer
  • It is always recommended to follow the instructions of the manufacturer, in this case Honda, but adding a transmission cooler and power steering cooler is always a good idea. When towing, the added weight puts more stress and strain on the transmission and power steering components. Adding coolers will extend the life of these components by keeping them at their optimum operating temperature. For your 2006 Honda Pilot and the trailer and ATVs you plan to carry, I recommend going with...

If you'll only be using the hitch for towing a trailer, it should work just fine for you. However, if you're wanting to use the hitch as an attachment point for other hitch mounted accessories like a cargo carrier or a bike rack, it wouldn't be the best choice. • Is a Transmission Cooler Recommended for a 2007 Toyota Sienna Towing a 1,500 lb Camper
  • Adding a transmission cooler would be a good idea, especially if you will be towing during the summer. Overheating is one of the main causes of transmission failure and towing a trailer puts more stress on the engine and transmission. Transmission fluid cannot be over cooled, so it is best to install the largest and most efficient cooler that will fit. • Which Transmission Cooler is Recommended for a Nissan Frontier with 6,500 Pound Towing Capacity
  • The best way to decide which class cooler you need is to take a look at what you will be towing and where. If you will be towing a light load, less than 2,000 pounds, in flat driving conditions, your vehicle will do fine with a Class I. If you will be towing 6,000 pound load through some hills, I would use the Class III cooler. I prefer the 8000 and 9000 series. They are built a little heavier and are more resilient.
