Perhaps the simplest type of heat exchanger, the tube-fin effectively cools a variety of automotive systems. The concept is simple: Fluid cools as it travels through the core by transferring heat out to the fins. The fins then provide the surface area necessary for sufficient heat exchange to take place, allowing the heat pulled from the fluid to dissipate into the surrounding air. Quick, easy and effective.

Video Transcript for Derale Transmission Coolers - Tube-Fin Cooler - D12902 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Derale Dyna-Cool Tube Fin transmission cooler kit. Now this kit will improve functioning and overall performance of your transmission. Basically, the fluid will cool as it travels through this core by transferring the heat out to the fins and then the fins will provide the surface area that's necessary for the sufficient heat exchange to take place, allowing the heat pulled from the fluid in the tubes to dissipate in to the air. It's a very quick, easy and effective way to cool your transmission. Now this will extend the life of your transmission and prolong its period between necessary fluid changes and it'll also cut down on heat related failures. The other nice thing is, inside the tubes where the fluid is flowing, they do have a built in embossed turbulator and what that does is it'll agitate the fluid as it goes through those tubes, for more efficient cooling.

This is constructed of a durable, light weight aluminum, uses thermal conductive metal to provide excellent transfer of the heat. Includes everything shown here on the table and includes the cooler itself. Includes this high temperature olium 00:00:57 spec hose, with stainless steel clamps. Comes with the nylon mounting rods for installing it. A nice set of detailed instructions on how to install it and then comes with this nice Instadapt radiator adapter. What's nice about this, is this adapter will adapt your transmission line, so that you can connect the radiator to your transmission cooler quickly and easily, with no cutting or flaring of lines.

It will fit almost any vehicle that has the 5/16 inch diameter transmission line and as you can see on the fitting, it includes male and female threads. A few specs on this. The inlet and outlet on this, if we measure the distance between them, center to center is going to be right at 3 3/4 inches. The length on the hose itself is 48 inches. The overall dimension, from this end to the very far end is going to be right at 15 1/4 inches wide.

The height on it is right at 5 inches tall and the depth on it is 3/4 of an inch. Now the actual core itself, the width on that is going to be right at 12 1/4 inches. That should do it, for the review on the Derale Dyna-Cool Tube Fin transmission cooler kit.

good product form a great company ! my only complaint is this was listed as for my specific truck, but the "insta-dapt" supplied doesn't fit the Dodge truck of my year. even doing my research ahead of time, it seems to be hit or miss whether it would fit as some of them come with 5/16 fittings and some (like mine) come with 9/16 fittings. it doesnt matter the engine size, even other 3.7L dodge trucks of the same year have 5/16 fittings... I think Dodge made a change middle year, but never let the consumer know as mine is a late year '04. no dig deal as I was able to assemble it anyways and got it up and running great and both the radiator and trans are running much cooler now ! I attached the D12902 to the bumper as you will see in attached images. 2 attached images are just before finishing, bumper hasnt been attached yet, one of them is after everything was complete. 189096

I mounted this fan in the puller position on my auxiliary transmission cooler so that I can tow a 15ft travel trailer with my minivan. Installation was sweet. There was an instruction page in the box and enough parts for mounting. I was surprised at how much air this thing moves. I wouldn't call it noisy since the fan spins smoothly and quietly when I tested it out in the open, but when mounted in the congested grill area of my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan I can definitely hear it hum more than the stock radiator fan. It pushes that much air. I would definitely recommend this product. 413989

I ordered this cooler for my daughter's 2012 Nissan Rogue to fix CVT transmission heating up causing it to into limp mode. When I got ready to install, I found there was no place to connect the hoses to the transmission. The vehicle only had the direct "bee hive" cooler. Install was delayed while waiting to get a "4 tube bee hive" from a different supplier for an additional $114. 551625

I purchased this for my C6 Corvette A6 transmission. I did, however, bypass the radiator and only use the transmission cooler for the C6. I purchased and used the Derale Radiator Adapter fitting 259-13035 for both the top and bottom and just capped them off to keep debris out of the reservoir. I also had to make some custom mounting brackets. This is an excellent product and it keeps the tranny in a great temperature range. 552474

Very easy install, absolutely no leaks anywhere in the system after putting it into service. I did have to get additional hose for the install due to the location I chose for the cooler (personal preference). I centered it on the bumper side of the radiator to provide the best air flow. Remember to get a quart of transmission fluid to accomodate the larger system volume after the install. I took my grill off to provide the most room for putting the cooler in rather than trying to wedge it between the radiator and grill, made install the nylon fasteners through the radiator and cooler much easier. Should last for many years. 61081

Hi I need to know at what temp. is exactly activated Thanks

-- comment by: LIVIU - 08/09/2013

This fan does not include a thermostat system. It can be wired into the original electrical system and will then operate according to the thermostat system in the vehicle. It can also be wired to an on/off switch but that is usually only done if off-road and race applications. We have plenty of thermostat options, sold separately, for determining the temperature at which the fan kicks on. For example, part D16735 kicks on at 180 degrees and shuts off at 165 degrees. Part D16759 is an adjustable thermostat system. Turn-on temperate can be set any where between 150 and 240 degrees. The turn-off temperature will always be 10 degrees less than the turn-on temperature.

I bought this cooler for my 2007 Chevy avalanche LTZ 4X4 with 5.3 motor. I also bought the adapter the adapter D13035 for my truck as well. It was a quick and easy install. I just got it installed on 2/2/2018 and took the truck for a drive and it has dropped my transmission temp at least 40 degrees. It took me around 40 min to install. Very Happy with this new addition to my truck. FYI if you buy this unit to make it easier i would order an extra Line because the one line will be cutting close to reaching location. 472461

What is the rated towing weight for a 1999 Honda CR-V? Does a trannie cooler install fairly easily on the Honda CR-Vs? What is the most effective mounting location for the finned cooler? How does the addition of a trannie cooler effect the volume of fluid and fluid level reading on the dip stick? Thanks for your time and expertise.

The towing capacity question is a loaded one. For that, I would refer back to the owners manual. It can vary depending on engine, transmission, drive configuration and more. Furthermore, Honda has some very specific guidelines regarding towing so it's best to defer to them. Installing a trans cooler on a full size truck can be easier because of the extra space, but it is not particularly difficult on any vehicle. We actually have a video of a cooler being installed on a 2006 C-V. We remove the front bumper cover for the video, but you may find you do not need to. (See link). The most effective location will be in front of both the radiator and the A/C condenser. As you move behind each cooling device, the efficiency diminishes. We put ours in front of everything on the 2006 in the video. For fluid capacity, plan on an extra 1/2 quart. Depending on cooler size and construction, it will vary some, but 1/2 qt. is a good rule of thumb.

Super easy install. With the installation video on Youtube it took out any of the guess work. The hose could stand to be about 3" - 5" longer if you are going to center in the A frame of an older chevy grill (I have an 06 Avalanche. I had to offset to the passenger side to use the supplied hoses) But, you can get a longer hose easy enough. Just ran over the pass and back and no leaks. Looks good so far! 377410

Very good product works well. The reason for 3 stars, it's NOT a direct fit as described when I purchased the product. The transmission lines are fitted to the A/C condenser so they had to be cut and needed to buy a flaring tool to flare the cut transmission lines. I look at the product online and now there's a note stating altering OEM lines may be needed. This wasn't there when I purchased it which delayed my install for another day. 336579

Review from a similar Derale Dyno-Cool in Transmission Coolers

Ive got a 1999 4runner that had the unfortunate luck of having the integrated transmission cooler line rupture inside my radiator. needless to say, the transmission didnt agree very well with having engine coolant running through it and finally died out on me. I bought this transmission cooler to isolate the transmission and the engine cooling systems. The cooler arrived a day ahead of schedule, which is always a bonus. I didnt rate it at 5 stars because I havent had a chance to install it yet and see how it performs, but judging by the reviews that I have read so far, the customer service provided and the prompt delivery, I would say that this transmission cooler will keep my truck running for a good long while. Everything pictured arrived in the box and I have no doubt that it will perform as expected. I will definitely recommend this product and this company to my friends! 30988

This product is great and installation was not bad at all. Only issue I had was that the GM radiator adaptor should come with this unit when you purchase it for a GM truck. Not as an add-on. Thought I could get it at GM but no go. I Had to work with hoses over 30 min to get them over the fittings even with trans. fluid on the hose and male fitting. So far it looks like trans temp has dropped 30 dg. 134485

Review from a similar Derale Dyno-Cool in Transmission Coolers

After one of use on a 2005 Honda Pilot, everything is holding up just fine. The one star less is because of the difficulty in installing it on this particular vehicle. Although this is a universal component, it is MUCH easier to install on pickup trucks. Best of luck with a brand new rubber hose going on with any sort of ease. 521316

I just installed this on my chevy avalanche. Flipped the bottom brace around in order to mount to. The hardest part is getting the hoses on the cooler and over the return line. I ended up getting a 90 deg quick connection coming from the radiator instead of using the one I got from etrailer. This keeps the hose from bending as much. Also purchase the installation kit with a hose as you will need an extra hose. After install I wish I would have went with the next bigger unit which is 10 high instead of 7 1/2 as I had plenty of room. 591245

  • The length of hose that comes with the Derale transmission coolers like part # D12902 is 10 feet. That is usually adequate for most vehicles, but on a larger SUV like your 2011 Toyota FJ Cruiser a long hose like part # D13017 could be needed. In most cases the line needed can be pretty short since typically the fittings and lines that get removed and used are all right near the radiator. Typically you don't need a long section of hose unless you are going from the transmission all the...

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler For A 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • Generally speaking, the best transmission cooler to use would be the largest one you have available space for behind the grill and in front of the radiator. The largest available cooler we have as a confirmed fit for your 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser is the Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit part # D12902. This kit comes with everything needed for installation, including instructions which you can also find linked to this answer page. The winter season will not affect performance. This...

  • Recommendation and Location of Transmission Cooler on 1997 Toyota RAV4
  • The transmission cooler kits are designed to be mounted flush against either the radiator or the AC condenser core. For maximum cooling ability, the heat exchanger must receive the most airflow possible. On your 1997 Toyota RAV4 the location with the greatest efficiency is between your vehicles grille and the AC condenser core. The next most efficient location would be between the condenser and the radiator. To determine what kind of transmission cooler you will need depends on how...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2006 Pontiac Vibe AWD with a 1.8L Engine
  • Transmission coolers are not vehicle specific, however to optimize efficiency you would want to use the largest transmission cooler available, and mount in the optimal place on your vehicle. The most efficient mounting position is considered to be between the grille and the AC condenser core. Considering the space that is available for you to mount a transmission cooler is most likely limited on your 2006 Pontiac Vibe I recommend either the Derale 9000 Plate and Fin Transmission Cooler...

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler for 2014 Acura MDX
  • It's definitely possible that the transmission cooler similar to the Derale Class I # D12902 you have installed on your 2014 Acura MDX is too small, but the transmission overheating could have been caused by a few other factors as well. I first recommend making sure that the cooler is mounted in a good location that is getting plenty of air flow. The ideal location for mounting a cooler like this is directly behind the grille, in front of the AC condenser core. The outside temperature,...

  • Complete Tow Package Recommendation for 2008 Honda Odyssey
  • Lets start with a hitch for your 2008 Honda Odyssey. For that the best option is the Draw Tite part # 75270 which is a confirmed fit and has plenty of towing capacity. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. For wiring you'd need to start with a 4-way like the # 118438 and then convert it to a 7-way with the # ETBC7 which comes with everything needed to wire in a brake controller as well. Install videos for these two products attached to this page as well. For...

  • Recommended Transmission Cooler and Brake Controller for a 2008 Dodge Nitro
  • A vehicle equipped with a tow/haul button does not necessarily have a factory transmission cooler. The tow/haul button is used to change the shift points of your transmission for optional performance while towing. Almost all vehicles nowadays have an auxiliary transmission cooler of some sort, however, that's not to say that they are designed for towing or will withstand the transmission temperatures associated with this. Therefore, I recommend installing an aftermarket transmission cooler...
