Perhaps the simplest type of heat exchanger, the tube-fin effectively cools a variety of automotive systems. The concept is simple: Fluid cools as it travels through the core by transferring heat out to the fins. The fins then provide the surface area necessary for sufficient heat exchange to take place, allowing the heat pulled from the fluid to dissipate into the surrounding air. Quick, easy and effective.

Video Transcript for Derale Transmission Coolers - Tube-Fin Cooler - D12901 Review

Today, we're going to take a Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit. This part will improve functioning and overall performance of your transmission. The fluid will cool as it travels through this core by transferring the heat out to the fins. Then the fins will provide the nice surface area necessary for this sufficient heat exchange to take place. It allows the heat to be pulled from the fluid to dissipate into the air. It's a very quick, easy, and effective way to cool your transmission.

This will extend the life of your transmission and it prolongs periods between necessary fluid changes. It does also cut down on heat related failures. The other nice thing on the inside of these tubes, they actually have built in embossed turbulators. What does that is as the fluid goes through the tubes, it'll agitate that fluid for more efficient cooling. This is constructed of a durable light-weight aluminum. It has a thermal conductive metal to provide excellent transfer of heat.

This part includes everything shown here on the table. Includes the cooler itself, the high temperature OEM spec hose with the stainless-steel clamps, the nylon mounting rods, the nice set of detailed instructions on how to install it, and then the critical thing is this Insta-Dapt radiator adapter. What's nice about this, this will adapt your transmission line so that you connect your radiator to your transmission cooler quickly and easily. There's no cutting or flaring of lines. It will fit almost any vehicle with 5/16 inch diameter transmission lines.

As you can see, it does include male and female threads on it. A few specs on this. The inlets right here, inlet and outlet, the distance between them is going to be center to center right at 3 3/4 of an inch. The size is a 11/32 of an inch diameter hose bar. The hose length of this hose right here is 48 inches. Then, the overall, we're going to measure from the end to the very end.

It's going to be right at 13 inches. The height on it, top to bottom is right at 5 inches. The depth of the whole cooler is about 3/4 of an inch. The cooler itself, just to measure that, the width on that is going to be right at about 9 3/4 inches. That should do it for the review on the Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit. .

I mounted this fan in the puller position on my auxiliary transmission cooler so that I can tow a 15ft travel trailer with my minivan. Installation was sweet. There was an instruction page in the box and enough parts for mounting. I was surprised at how much air this thing moves. I wouldn't call it noisy since the fan spins smoothly and quietly when I tested it out in the open, but when mounted in the congested grill area of my 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan I can definitely hear it hum more than the stock radiator fan. It pushes that much air. I would definitely recommend this product. 413989

I ordered this cooler for my daughter's 2012 Nissan Rogue to fix CVT transmission heating up causing it to into limp mode. When I got ready to install, I found there was no place to connect the hoses to the transmission. The vehicle only had the direct "bee hive" cooler. Install was delayed while waiting to get a "4 tube bee hive" from a different supplier for an additional $114. 551625

Very easy install, absolutely no leaks anywhere in the system after putting it into service. I did have to get additional hose for the install due to the location I chose for the cooler (personal preference). I centered it on the bumper side of the radiator to provide the best air flow. Remember to get a quart of transmission fluid to accomodate the larger system volume after the install. I took my grill off to provide the most room for putting the cooler in rather than trying to wedge it between the radiator and grill, made install the nylon fasteners through the radiator and cooler much easier. Should last for many years. 61081

I purchased this for my C6 Corvette A6 transmission. I did, however, bypass the radiator and only use the transmission cooler for the C6. I purchased and used the Derale Radiator Adapter fitting 259-13035 for both the top and bottom and just capped them off to keep debris out of the reservoir. I also had to make some custom mounting brackets. This is an excellent product and it keeps the tranny in a great temperature range. 552474

-- comment by: LIVIU - 08/09/2013

This fan does not include a thermostat system. It can be wired into the original electrical system and will then operate according to the thermostat system in the vehicle. It can also be wired to an on/off switch but that is usually only done if off-road and race applications. We have plenty of thermostat options, sold separately, for determining the temperature at which the fan kicks on. For example, part D16735 kicks on at 180 degrees and shuts off at 165 degrees. Part D16759 is an adjustable thermostat system. Turn-on temperate can be set any where between 150 and 240 degrees. The turn-off temperature will always be 10 degrees less than the turn-on temperature.

I bought this cooler for my 2007 Chevy avalanche LTZ 4X4 with 5.3 motor. I also bought the adapter the adapter D13035 for my truck as well. It was a quick and easy install. I just got it installed on 2/2/2018 and took the truck for a drive and it has dropped my transmission temp at least 40 degrees. It took me around 40 min to install. Very Happy with this new addition to my truck. FYI if you buy this unit to make it easier i would order an extra Line because the one line will be cutting close to reaching location. 472461

good product form a great company ! my only complaint is this was listed as for my specific truck, but the "insta-dapt" supplied doesn't fit the Dodge truck of my year. even doing my research ahead of time, it seems to be hit or miss whether it would fit as some of them come with 5/16 fittings and some (like mine) come with 9/16 fittings. it doesnt matter the engine size, even other 3.7L dodge trucks of the same year have 5/16 fittings... I think Dodge made a change middle year, but never let the consumer know as mine is a late year '04. no dig deal as I was able to assemble it anyways and got it up and running great and both the radiator and trans are running much cooler now ! I attached the D12902 to the bumper as you will see in attached images. 2 attached images are just before finishing, bumper hasnt been attached yet, one of them is after everything was complete. 189096

What is the rated towing weight for a 1999 Honda CR-V? Does a trannie cooler install fairly easily on the Honda CR-Vs? What is the most effective mounting location for the finned cooler? How does the addition of a trannie cooler effect the volume of fluid and fluid level reading on the dip stick? Thanks for your time and expertise.

The towing capacity question is a loaded one. For that, I would refer back to the owners manual. It can vary depending on engine, transmission, drive configuration and more. Furthermore, Honda has some very specific guidelines regarding towing so it's best to defer to them. Installing a trans cooler on a full size truck can be easier because of the extra space, but it is not particularly difficult on any vehicle. We actually have a video of a cooler being installed on a 2006 C-V. We remove the front bumper cover for the video, but you may find you do not need to. (See link). The most effective location will be in front of both the radiator and the A/C condenser. As you move behind each cooling device, the efficiency diminishes. We put ours in front of everything on the 2006 in the video. For fluid capacity, plan on an extra 1/2 quart. Depending on cooler size and construction, it will vary some, but 1/2 qt. is a good rule of thumb.

Super easy install. With the installation video on Youtube it took out any of the guess work. The hose could stand to be about 3" - 5" longer if you are going to center in the A frame of an older chevy grill (I have an 06 Avalanche. I had to offset to the passenger side to use the supplied hoses) But, you can get a longer hose easy enough. Just ran over the pass and back and no leaks. Looks good so far! 377410

Very good product works well. The reason for 3 stars, it's NOT a direct fit as described when I purchased the product. The transmission lines are fitted to the A/C condenser so they had to be cut and needed to buy a flaring tool to flare the cut transmission lines. I look at the product online and now there's a note stating altering OEM lines may be needed. This wasn't there when I purchased it which delayed my install for another day. 336579

Review from a similar Derale Dyno-Cool in Transmission Coolers

Ive got a 1999 4runner that had the unfortunate luck of having the integrated transmission cooler line rupture inside my radiator. needless to say, the transmission didnt agree very well with having engine coolant running through it and finally died out on me. I bought this transmission cooler to isolate the transmission and the engine cooling systems. The cooler arrived a day ahead of schedule, which is always a bonus. I didnt rate it at 5 stars because I havent had a chance to install it yet and see how it performs, but judging by the reviews that I have read so far, the customer service provided and the prompt delivery, I would say that this transmission cooler will keep my truck running for a good long while. Everything pictured arrived in the box and I have no doubt that it will perform as expected. I will definitely recommend this product and this company to my friends! 30988

This product is great and installation was not bad at all. Only issue I had was that the GM radiator adaptor should come with this unit when you purchase it for a GM truck. Not as an add-on. Thought I could get it at GM but no go. I Had to work with hoses over 30 min to get them over the fittings even with trans. fluid on the hose and male fitting. So far it looks like trans temp has dropped 30 dg. 134485

After one of use on a 2005 Honda Pilot, everything is holding up just fine. The one star less is because of the difficulty in installing it on this particular vehicle. Although this is a universal component, it is MUCH easier to install on pickup trucks. Best of luck with a brand new rubber hose going on with any sort of ease. 521316

I just installed this on my chevy avalanche. Flipped the bottom brace around in order to mount to. The hardest part is getting the hoses on the cooler and over the return line. I ended up getting a 90 deg quick connection coming from the radiator instead of using the one I got from etrailer. This keeps the hose from bending as much. Also purchase the installation kit with a hose as you will need an extra hose. After install I wish I would have went with the next bigger unit which is 10 high instead of 7 1/2 as I had plenty of room. 591245

  • Does the Derale Transmission Cooler for a 2001 Honda Odyssey Come with Installation Instructions
  • The transmission cooler # D12901 does come with installation instructions. Since transmission coolers are not vehicle specific, the instructions will not cover any individual vehicles. The output from the transmission will first run to the factory cooler which is mounted inside the radiator. The return line will then go to the supplemental cooler, and from there back to the transmission. A cooler can be mounted in basic locations depending on the space available. The most efficient place...

  • Optimal Mounting Location for Transmission Cooler on 2006 Buick Rendezvous
  • The best spot to install the transmission cooler is in front of the radiator, where it will get maximum air flow. If necessary it can be mounted behind the radiator, if there is sufficient clearance for installation. Installing the cooler in front of your radiator would almost certainly involve removing the grille and possibly the front fascia under the bumper to improve access. We have an installation video showing a cooler being installed on a different vehicle, watching the video...

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for a 2008 Chevy Uplander
  • Transmission coolers are not vehicle specific so you can use any one that will fit in the space you have available in the engine compartment. There are 3 locations you could mount the cooler: in front the A/C condenser, behind the condenser and in front of the radiator, or behind the radiator which is not very efficient. Check these areas for how much space you have to make sure a cooler fits. The most popular cooler is # D13503. It measures 11 inches across, 8-3/4 inches tall, and 7/8...

  • Would the Derale Transmission Cooler part # D12901 be Adequate for 2007 Honda Odyssey Towing Pop Up
  • Transmission coolers like the part # D12901 don't really have weight ratings. We put them in classifications based on size and the general cooling efficiency they would have. The part # D12901 would work just as good towing a 2,000 lb trailer as a 2,100 lb trailer. This will work just fine on your 2007 Honda Odyssey.

  • Transmission Cooler Recommendation for 2004 Dodge Dakota with 3.7 L Engine
  • The Derale 17" Frame Rail Fluid Cooler, # D13221, is a universal cooler so it will fit your 2004 Dodge Dakota but does not include the fittings and hose that you will need for installation. Instead, I recommend taking a look at Derale Dyno-Cool Tube-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit, # D12901. Still very economical but offers a larger cooler and includes a high-temperature hose with clamps, nylon mounting rods, and Insta-dapt radiator adapter which fits most vehicles with 5/16" transmission...

  • Transmission Cooler and Suspension Enhancement for a 1995 Plymouth Voyager
  • A transmission cooler would definitely be a good call for your 1995 Plymouth Voyager since the factory cooler by itself is adequate at best for non-towing situations. The best way to pick out a transmission cooler is to measure the amount of space you have in front of your radiator and pick out the largest cooler that would fit there. If you have room for it I would recommend you go with a Derale Transmision Cooler part # D13502. This cooler measures 11 inches wide by 7-1/4 inches tall...
