Video Transcript for Malone XtraLight Trailer Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Malone XtraLight Trailer, part number MGP525G. Heading out for an adventure Carry more gear behind your vehicle with the Malone XtraLight Trailer. You can use it to transport your kayaks, surfboards, paddle-boards, bikes, and boats up to 14' long. You could even put a cargo box, or basket on it to haul more gear. The extra long tongue measures, just under 7.5', giving us plenty of room for tight turns. The 8" wheels ride on a leaf-spring suspension to help cushion our ride. The included fenders are going to help protect your gear from mud, rocks, and road grime. It features DOT approved lighting to help keep you safe. As you can see we have running lights, brake lights, left and right turn signals.

It also features two amber side-marker lights. The wiring simply plugs into your vehicle's 4 pole connection. It's designed to work with your 2" ball. Safety chains are included. The coupler latch features a hole, so you can pass a lock through for better security. It's easily movable with the coupler handle, and the tongue skid protects our coupler and our tongue. With everything all loaded up, let's go ahead and take it out on our test course, and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our follow. This is going to show side-to-side action, such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then, on to our solid speed-bumps.

This is going to show an up and down action, such as pulling in and out of a driveway, or out of a parking lot. Finally, on to our alternate speed-bumps. This is going to show a twisting action, such as driving over potholes, or uneven pavement. I've gone ahead and removed our gear, so we can go over some additional features. As you can see, our square bars are going to support a wide variety of accessories. They are fixed 47" apart, and they're 58" wide. The whole trailer is just over 11' long.

The whole thing is made out of a galvanized construction, so it's going to resist rust and corrosion. Unloaded it weights 164 pounds. It comes with all the paperwork you need to title it, and a license plate bracket, so you can keep it street legal. It can be delivered to your doorstep. It's easy to assemble, and all the hardware you need is included. And that's going to complete our look at the Malone XtraLight Trailer, part number MPG525G.

Easy to assemble following the well written instructions. More substantial than I was expecting. It's worth carefully checking everything that comes in the boxes to make sure there are no missing components. Mine was missing the lighting package, but I reported this to etrailer and they got a replacement out to me very quickly. Also, the instructions indicate that the VIN sticker and paperwork are included, but these will actually be mailed to you separately by etrailer. I am using the finished trailer to mount a roof tent and make a light weight camper. etrailer's customer service is absolutely outstanding. They have real people on the phone and their follow up is first rate. 444914

This trailer was pretty easy to put together, at first i was wondering what i got myself into and then the boxes came and i got everything out and put into groups, and then just followed the manual and now i go kayaking all the time now. its a very solid trailer and if i have to move it by hand its light enough to do. and thats alot since ive had extensive neck surgery, thats why i choose this trailer. 684019

Review from a similar Malone XtraLight in Trailers

Just received the trailer yesterday, it's still in 4 boxes. :) Can't wait to assemble it and start my first fishing trip with my kayak on the trailer. I promise to upload my photos of the trailer later. I absolutely wanted to highly recommend etrailer.com for its super customer service. Karen and a few other expert team members helped me with ordering. I had to cancel a wrong order which I placed by mistake. They took care of removing the order and notifying me of the cancellation. Throughout the ordering process, there was adequate communication and I was informed of what's going on. It was very pleasant to speak with Karen on the phone as well. The website of etrailer.com is obviously powered by the state-of-art technology which makes searching for products very easy and trouble free. I had very positive experience using the searching and shopping features. After the order was placed, I could check the delivery status on their website too. It even showed me a map of where the product was on route to my home address. It's just so cool and reassuring every step of the way. I must say this is by far the best online shopping experience that I have had in a very long time. Thank you, Karen and team! Thank you, etrailer.com. Will return to shop for more!!!! 561712

Ask the Experts about this Malone Trailers

  • Is Malone XtraLight Trailer Easy to Assemble, Good on Highway, Easy to Move, Comparable to Yakima
Most of the assembly of the Malone roof rack on wheels # MPG525G is just turning wrenches which is to say simple and straight forward. The instructions are some of the best I have seen with easy to understand explanations and color pictures. I have included a link to them for you. I have no doubt that you would be able to assemble the trailer without any problems. Small trailers like this are fine on the highway when loaded. What can make a trailer, any trailer, bounce or sway is the...

  • How to Install the Fulton Fold-Away Hinge on a Malone Xtralight Trailer
Yes, the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit part # FHDPB230101 could be installed on the tongue of the Malone XtraLight Trailer part # MPG525G in place of the union plate that joins the two pieces of the tongue together which is pictured below. I spoke with Malone and they said this was perfectly fine and would avoid cutting into the frame.

  • How to Secure Kayak to Malone XtraLight Trailer # MPG525G When Using a Hobie Style Carrier
The best way to secure your kayak to your Malone XtraLight Trailer # MPG525G when utilizing the Hobie Style Carriers and Hardware # MPG5576-6 is to use a ratchet strap that has loops on both ends (see attached picture). We do have some available on our site like the Malone # 297-7RSBB for one, # 297-9RSDB for two, or # 297-7RSBB-M for four. I have attached a review video for you to check out.

  • Replacement Tires for Malone XtraLight Trailer MPG525G to Provide Higher Speed Rating
The Malone XtraLight Galvanized Steel Trailer # MPG525G does have a speed rating of 65-mph. This speed limit is a function of the specific tires supplied which are size 4.80/4.00-8. We offer wheels/tires in the same size and bolt pattern that have higher speed ratings, such as the Taskmaster # AS4808B45WS which has a speed rating of 81-mph. A pair of these to replace the standard wheels/tires supplied on the trailer will let you travel at faster highway speeds.

  • Correct Ball Mount Recommendation to Tow Malone XtraLight Trailer with PT Cruiser and Curt Hitch
You asked a great question about picking out the correct rise/drop ball mount for towing the Malone XtraLight Trailer part # MPG525G. Basically you want to go with the ball mount that has the correct rise/drop to allow the trailer to sit as level as possible. So when the Curt hitch part # C11132 is installed on your 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser it's going to have a distance of 11-1/4 inches from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground and the Malone trailer has a distance of 15 inches...

  • Can 2 Kayaks and 2 SUPs Fit on the Malone XtraLight Trailer MPG525G
On the Malone trailer # MPG525G the crossbars are 58 inches long. If you were to place the kayaks side by side and on their sides using a carrier such as the Nautic # RRS520 and then placed the SUPS stacked next to the kayaks the overall width of all those products is likely going to be greater than 58 inches. So really you just need a version of the trailer with longer bars. Trailer # MPG460G has 65 inch long bars. You can do a rough measurement ahead of time by putting the kayaks on...

  • Weight Capacity of Malone XtraLight Trailer # MPG525G
The Malone XtraLight Trailer # MPG525G referenced in your question actually does have a payload capacity of 400 pounds. I verified this with Malone. From time to time parts get updated/upgraded so we appreciate you making us aware of this! The trailer by itself (without accessories) weighs in at 159 pounds and its two 58 inch long square crossbars allow you to easily mount everything for your adventures. I have attached a couple short video reviews on this trailer that you can check...

  • Speed Rating of Malone XtraLight Trailer MPG525G
Malone's XtraLight Trailer # MPG525G is configured with 8-inch wheels and tires, size 4.80/4.00-8, which are 16-inches in overall diameter. These tires and the trailer itself are rated for highway driving up to 70-mph with the trailer loaded to its full capacity of 275-lbs. Towing a trailer at higher speeds than this is not recommended. Tires in 13-inch size ST175/80-13, like # AM31994, are 50% larger, 24-inches overall diameter, and would not fit on this trailer.

  • How to Prevent Coupler Noise While Towing with the Malone XtraLight Trailer Part # MPG525G
There could be two reasons as to why you are experiencing excessive noise from the hitch ball and coupler on the Malone XtraLight Trailer part # MPG525G. The first possible solution I have for you would be to add a good amount of grease to the hitch ball with part # 58117. If the hitch ball and coupler still continue to make nose after the grease is applied then it may very well be that there is just not enough weight on the tongue of the trailer as you mentioned. The most useful way...

  • Replacement Bearings for Malone XtraLight Trailer
I never was able to get an answer from Malone about replacement bearings for the XtraLight trailer, part # MPG525G. However, we happen to have one of their trailers in our lot and all the ones we carry all use the same hubs. So I got the information of the axle from it and contaced the axle manufacturer. • Are Kayak Carriers Required to Carry Kayaks on the Malone XtraLight Trailer MPG525G
Not necessarily though you would still have to tie the kayaks down to the trailer. You could mount a kayak, possibly 2 depending on how wide they are, directly to the crossbars on the Malone trailer # MPG525G. But having the kayaks on a carrier will limit the contact between the bars and the kayaks, protecting them, and also will free up some space on the trailer should you need to carry other items. What I recommend is to use the Rhino-Rack carrier # S512 with the expansion arm # RRS512X....

If you are wanting small trailer with Yakima crossbars we have just what you need. The Yakima Rack and Roll trailers like part # Y08106 are setup with Yakima crossbars on them already and would be your ideal solution. The Malone trailer part # MPG525G is a great trailer but it's not designed to have Yakima bars installed on it. This means you'll have plenty of carrying capacity for other items like your trolling motor and other gear. The crossbars of the Malone XtraLight are 59 inches so if you have one of your kayaks on saddles you would need to measure its width and another in a J-style carrier you would need to measure the kayak's depth/height in order to determine if you have enough room for both to fit on 59...
