When towing your vehicle with a tow bar, all 4 wheels are in contact with the ground. Certain vehicles - namely, those with front-wheel-drive automatic transmissions - require either a transmission lube pump system or a driveshaft disconnect when being flat towed. Using a tow dolly eliminates the need for those by lifting your vehicle's front wheels off the road. In addition, using a dolly eliminates the need for base plates that clutter the front of your towed car, difficult-to-install wiring, and a potentially expensive supplemental braking system. Also, if you want to tow multiple vehicles, this dolly is a great alternative to traditional flat towing because you don't have to purchase and install brackets and wiring for all of your cars.

Tilting Bed Frame

Demco Tow Dolly Tilting Bed Frame

The tilting bed frame makes loading and unloading your vehicle a breeze. Pull the latch handle on the dolly's tongue toward the coupler to drop the bed frame. This will angle the loading ramps down to make it easy to drive your car onto the dolly. Once your car is properly loaded, the weight of your vehicle on the dolly will automatically reengage the latch on the tongue assembly and return the platform to a locked, level alignment. There's no need to manually relatch the bed after loading your vehicle. After unloading your vehicle, realign the platform by simply stepping down on the tongue until it latches into place.

Hydraulic Disc Brake System

Hydraulic Disc Brake System

The integrated hydraulic braking system features Demco's eZ-Latch surge coupler and disc brakes for safe stopping of your towed vehicle. When the eZ-Latch coupler latch is in the closed position, drop the coupler over the hitch ball and the latch will snap into place. No need to pull the latch up to open the ball socket. The drop that's built into the coupler helps you match your tow vehicle height, and the included breakaway lever activates the tow dolly's brakes should it disconnect from your RV. All hydraulic lines and fittings come pre-installed with the hoses run through the frame.

Demco Tow Dolly Disc Brakes

Disc brakes provide more consistent stopping power and a shorter stopping distance than drum brakes for safer transport of your vehicle. When you apply the brakes in your motorhome, deceleration will occur and momentum will push the dolly toward the rear of your RV. This applies force to the surge coupler's master cylinder, which sends hydraulic fluid through the lines to engage the brakes. This design ensures that the dolly brakes proportionately to your motorhome, which helps to eliminate wear and tear on your RV's brakes. And, because the brakes don't require an electrical signal, an electric brake controller is not needed.

Setup and Use

Demco Tow Dolly Parts and Assembly

The main components of the Kar Kaddy 3 come pre-assembled for fast setup. Use the included instructions and hardware to attach the main frame to the tongue assembly, then install the ramps, fenders, mud flaps, and wheels. Finally, connect the pre-routed wiring.

Prior to towing, bleed the hydraulic system to remove any air from the brake fluid reservoir. Brake fluid is not included.

Demco Tow Dolly Wheel Nets

The textured ramps allow for safe loading of your vehicle onto the integrated wheel platforms. Once your towed car is in place, drape 1 tie-down strap over each front tire. Secure the straps to the platforms, and then use the tie-down winches to easily tighten the straps around the wheels. Attach the included safety chains to your vehicle's frame and you're ready to set out.

Included tie-down straps fit most standard automotive tires. Straps for large (DM03528-93) or small (DM03528-81) tires are sold separately.

Built for Highway Use

Hit the highway in the quality, well-engineered Kar Kaddy 3. The steerable axle allows the tow dolly to track directly behind your RV, preventing sliding and binding of the tires. The dolly's radial tires create less rolling resistance and heat buildup than bias ply tires, resulting in longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds. This makes radial tires ideal for highway use.

Demco Tow Dolly Lighting Package

The full LED lighting package is DOT compliant for safe towing. Brake, tail, and turn signal lights, front fender marker lights, and license plate marker lights are included to increase visibility on the road.

The galvanized ramps and black powder coated components resist rust and chipping. And mud flaps and rustproof polyethylene fenders protect your vehicle from flying road debris.

Video Transcript for Demco Kar Kaddy 3 Tow Dolly Review

Narrator: Today we're gonna be taking a look at Demco's Kar Kaddy 3 tow dolly with disc brakes. So you're looking to haul your vehicle behind your motor home, but you don't wanna modify the vehicle and heck up the front end to hook it up This is a great option to get that job done. And the Kar Kaddy works with all different types of vehicles, so if you've got a couple different vehicles that you like to bring with you on your adventures, you can choose whichever one you want, load it onto your Kar Kaddy and on your way.Base plates are another option, but base plates only work with that particular vehicle. It's expensive to install and there are a lot of components required. This is a much simpler solution. You simply hook your Kar Kaddy up to your motor home, drive your vehicle on, and promptly secure it to the Kar Kaddy and you're ready to go.Your vehicle's secured to the Kar Kaddy using the included strap that drapes over the tire and cinches it down tight. The strap that comes included can be swapped out for free and exchange it with the manufacturer for different sizes, in case you have excessively large or small wheels on your vehicle that you may need to make that change. It also features safety chains that you can hook around the frame of your vehicle so in the event of a catastrophic disconnect it'll still stay attached, helping you to be able to come to a safe stop. The Kar Kaddy's capable of towing any vehicles up to 4,800 pounds. So it's gonna be great for your sedans, SUV's, and light trucks. Now with the vehicle off we can go over some additional features. So here you can see the breaking system installed on our trailer is disc brakes, which has a much better stopping force than your traditional drum brakes. It's also gonna be smoother than drum brakes, providing a more even braking, which is gonna feel better to you in the cab of the vehicle.Up here on our tongue we have a surge brake actuator, which is going to apply our disc brakes allowing it to come to a stop.

What's great about this surge type system that I really like is that there's no electrical components required. You don't need a brake controller inside of your motor home to work with this. You simply hook it up, and it has brakes ready to go. You will need to provide your own brake fluid, fill and bleed the brake system per your instructions. As an added safety feature there's a breakaway switch located here on top of your surge actuator, so in the event of a catastrophic disconnect, the cable will pull the switch forward and apply the brakes. There's a sticker on here that labels when the brakes are on and off, so you'll know whether or not this was pulled.

You do not wanna use this to apply the brakes when your trailer's just being stowed to keep it in place. You'll wanna make sure you chock the wheels. And now speaking the braking system, another benefit this has over your flat tow set-ups, is that you don't have to worry about wearing out the brake pads on the vehicle you're pulling behind you. 'Cause on the flat tow set-ups it applies the brakes on that vehicle, which can have them wear down over time as you're pulling it behind you. Whereas this keeps your front wheels off the ground, and it only stops using the trailer's brakes, not the vehicle you're pulling. The loading ramps have a rugged surface to help provide traction when coming up onto the Kar Kaddy. Our cradles are designed to work with wheels that have a width between of 42 inches on the inside up to 76 inches on the outside. The steerable axle allows for tight cornering and easy maneuvering, keeping your vehicle track directly behind your motor home. The wheels and tires come included, and they're a standard size of 205/75R14.It's fully wired to be DOT compliant in all states. It uses a four pole, flat trailer connector to connect to your motor home, and you'll get your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps and brake lamps out of that.Additionally, when your tail lamps are on there is a license plate light located here to insure your license plate is illuminated. The entire deck can tilt up and down.

We have it locked in upright for when we're pulling it behind us with no vehicle. And you can simply pull the lever here, and it will tilt down for easy loading to get your vehicle onto the ramps. Our wheel cradles include a large front stop. So this way when you're pulling on you'll hit the stop and you'll feel that you're all the way up on your Kar Kaddy. Underneath our front stop you'll have a storage compartment to put your safety chains when not in use. And you also have a ramp at the back that is smaller, and this'll keep it from rolling back off once you've pulled on.The overall width of our trailer is gonna measure 101 inches from wheel well to wheel well, and it has an overall length of 131 inches from coupler to the end of your loading ramp. It'll be shipped to you via freight.

It's gonna be about 525 pounds. You will have to assemble it once you receive it.Our wheels are covered by fenders and mudflaps, so you don't have to worry about throwing road debris up on your vehicle. And when you're not using your Kar Kaddy, you can store it and the stand at the bottom will keep your coupler off the ground, out of the dirt and keeping it away from corrosion. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's hook it up and show you how to use it. We'll start at our RV and we wanna make sure that our hitch, ball mount and ball are all rated for at least 6,000 pounds. The ball itself needs to be two inches to match our coupler. And we need to make sure that the distance from the ground to the top of our ball is about 18 inches. Now that we know our requirements on this side we'll hook it up. We wanna remove the pin from the latch. I'm gonna go ahead and unlatch it, and set it on our hitch ball. Then we can latch it down and reinstall the pin.Next we'll hook up our safety cables. You wanna make sure that you cross them underneath your coupler before connecting them to your hitch. The reason you wanna cross your cables is that it creates a cradle underneath your coupler, so in the event of a catastrophic disconnect the cradle can help keep your coupler off the ground. 'Cause if it hits the ground it can dig in, and potentially cause the back to flip up.Hook up our breakaway cable. This is also gonna hook to your hitch. And then you'll plug up your electrical connection. Now on our trailer side, before you wanna pull your vehicle up, you're gonna wanna flip your license plate down, pull the steering pin. There's a lock pin you have to remove on the bottom first. We'll pull the tilt lever, and that will allow it to tilt down to allow our vehicle to drive up on it.So we'll pull the lever here to release the handle, push it down. The handle will contact this lever, pulling this out, and that will allow the strap to be pulled out. Now we can unhook it.And now it's recommended that you have somebody help guide you onto your tow dolly, and then you just pull forward onto it, nice and even. Now that our vehicle's on our Kar Kaddy, we'll wanna make sure we put the vehicle back in park and set the parking brake. We can now get out and strap our tires. We'll take our straps. We want to drape them over our tire. And if you need more length you may have to release it to get more out. We'll take our hooks. We want to latch those on on each side of our tire there. Now we can pull it tight, and cinch it down. Now when you cinch it down, once it gets kinda snug like it is here, while you still have movement you wanna make sure that you've got your strap positioned in the center of the tire. You can get the strap centered if you're having a hard time by sliding the entire ratcheting mechanism back and forth. So we line it up there in the center, and we'll just continue cinching. You'll wanna cinch it tight until it starts to pull the tire flat up against our front stop there. We can them push our lever up and reinsert our locking pin. This'll keep it from coming loose, and we'll repeat this same process on the other side. We'll now need to attach our safety chains to our frame. Now we do have an undershield on this vehicle, and it is a sub-frame vehicle so you could remove that and hook it to the sub-frame. We're gonna be hooking ours to the control arm here. So we just simply wrap it around. We wanna make sure we've got some slack our chain to account for suspension movement. And then we'll just latch it in on itself, and that way we're secure. We'll repeat the same process on the other side. Now before we hit the road, we are gonna need to release our parking brake that we had set now that we're fully strapped down on our tow dolly. Since our vehicle is front wheel drive we can go ahead and leave it in park. Now it is always recommended that you check your vehicle's owner's manual, 'cause there is typically recreational towing information in there for a proper set-up on how it wants your vehicle in being towed down the road. And it's going to vary depending if your vehicle's front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive. On most rear wheel drive vehicles it may be necessary to remove the drive shaft, because the rear wheels always need to be the ones that's contacting the ground and your front turn wheels need to be the ones on our tow dolly, and that's per Democ's recommendations. And the next thing you wanna verify is that your steering wheel is locked. Most vehicles have a lock mechanism in them, so if you turn the wheel you'll here it click, it'll lock in and you won't be able to move the wheel any more. On our vehicle we're using here it does not have the lock, so we're gonna need to use a supplemental lock. You can pick one of these up here at etrailer dot com, and this'll hold our steering wheel straight. And once you've reached your destination and you're ready to take your vehicle off, you'll just wanna reverse your steps. Make sure your vehicle's in park and that your parking brake in set. Then we can come down and undo our safety chains, and I'll undo our straps. Now we can pull the tilt lever. And as we drive off it'll tilt down automatically. You wanna make sure you put your pin back in for the steer axle. Just make sure you put the cotter pin back in as well, and flip up your license plate since this is a trailer and it does need to be registered with its own plate. And that completes our look at Demco's Kar Kaddy 3 tow dolly with disc brakes.

  • Compatibility of Tow Dolly for 2017 Honda Odyssey
  • Yes. The 2017 Honda Odyssey must be towed on a tow dolly. Towing it with 4 wheels down behind your motorhome would damage the transmission. Towing with the front wheels off the ground is an acceptable way to tow your vehicle according to your owners manual. I did a little research on your vehicle and the curb weight is between 4,396 lbs and 4,613 lbs depending on your features. This will make it too heavy for the Roadmaster Tow Dolly with Self-Steering Wheels and Electric Brakes...

  • I spoke with Demco about adding disc brakes to an old Demco Kar Kaddy Tow Dolly and they said that there is not an all inclusive kit for this. I know this may sound like a stretch but if you are paying someone to perform the work for you, the cost of a new tow dolly that already has disc brakes would be within a few hundred dollars or so most likely of what it would cost to install disc brakes on your tow dolly. The most cost effective tow dolly we offer with disc brakes is the Demco Kar...

Instead, I recommend the Demco Kar Kaddy 3 Tow Dolly # DM9713046 as it does not have the wheel restrictions of the Roadmaster.
