Video Transcript for Comprehensive Review: Hopkins Heavy-Duty, Coiled Trailer Connector Adapter

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com.Today, we're going to take a look at this Hopkins heavy duty seven way to six pole round coiled trailer connector adapter. Now, if your trailer has a six pole round connector on it and you go to connect to your vehicle and you find out there's only a seven way RV blade connector on the vehicle, that would be a problem. Now, this adapter right here will solve that problem. This is a nice heavy duty coiled cable adapter. It is compatible to plug into the seven way RV blade connector that's on your vehicle and it'll adapt it to work with the six way connector that's on your trailer. Now, the thing you need to make sure is that that center pin on the six pole round trailer side connector must be a 12 volt power connection for this adapter to work. Now, this is a nice heavy duty coiled cable.

You can see when it's stretched, it's about three foot long, provides the extra reach while ensuring that the wire will not drag due to the flex coil design. Has a nice weatherproof jacketing on it. Easy grip connector on this end. Does use tin-plated terminals for corrosion resistance.Other nice feature on the six pole end, you can see it has this nice attached dust cap here that when you're not plugged in or using it, you can just put it on over there and it'll protect the terminals from the elements. And it also uses this swing away metal clamp right here you can see, that'll keep the connection to the six pole end on your trailer nicely attached.

So if you go to attach it, you just take your plug off, plug it into the six way, rotate that metal clamp up and it'll hold the two connections together, keeps them from coming apart. And then when you're done, just go ahead and put your . when you're not using it, go ahead and put your cap back on and you can swing this out of the way up against the cord. Very nice connection. But that should do it for the review on this Hopkins heavy duty seven way to six pole round coil trailer connector adapter.

If I had watched the video I would not have purchased this connector. It says 0-5 feet, but it's only 3 feet. Additionally the 6-pole round end is female, which will not connect to your trailer/TOAD six-pin female socket. I couldn't find an adapter so ended up having to buy a completely new system at the last minute.

The wiring adapter that I recommend for flat towing would be part # HM47054. It is a 7 blade to 6 pole adapter that also comes with the 6 pole connector to add to the front of the vehicle. We will send over return instructions via email to return this adapter.

Product came on time and worked great. I’ve never ordered from Amazon preferring to order directly from suppliers.

The coiled trailer connector adapter I order was shipped the day after my order and I received this item quickly. Based on my smooth transaction with e-trailer, I would recommend this website to my friends. In fact this site was recommended to me by my son-in-law.

Just fine as I expected, thanks.

Male pins. Useless. Had to buy the right cable from [online] .Love etrailer. Only reason not going 5 star is the 7 way to 6 way cable. 6 way has male pins. Useless and I bought the male receiver from etrailer too.

I do have a solution for you. For a flat tow install you would need part #HM47053 which would have a female end for the 6 pin connector.

by:

I bought a new truck last year which had an electrical plug that did not fit my horse trailer. The Hopkins adapter that I ordered from etrailer.com was received in a very timely manner. It also was a perfect fit I just plugged it in and was good to go. I used it the whole year with no problems. I would not hesitate to use etrailer.com again.

by:

The staff and products at etrailer are awesome

by:

This is the strangest product I've run into. Besides being to short the six wire end has male pins. Try to go to any auto parts store trailer outlet even to e.trailer.com and find a connector that is mounted on a vehicle and it will have a male end on it. Who in there right mind would want to have a connector mounted on there tow vehicle with a pig-tail that comes out from the mail connector mounted on the tow vehicle. That's the only part I could find. So I went to an auto parts store and got parts and assembled my own cable that will work just fine. Besides it is longer and won't pull out of it's connections when making turns; the coil is to stiff for even a short distance.

by:

Super heavy duty. Perfect fit. Very well made and price is good for this product. My truck already had the towing package so the 7 blade end fit without any adapters, as well as the 6 pole end that hooks up to the trailer. Very satisfied.

by:

Great deal.... Thanks! I looked all over for this type of adapter. Very hard to find. Thanks to you I am spared the task of making a hard wire change just to pull an old hay trailer for my Dad. Thanks again!!

by:

Excellent quality and heavy duty products. I could not locate these type of cords locally but found them at etrailer. The cords are doing the job just as I planned. Would recommend etrailer for your towing needs.

by:

Well made quality product with smart pa ckaging.

  • 7-Way Blade Style to 6-Way Round Trailer Connector Adapter
The magnetic tow lights # SPL30B-6 only have stop, tail, and turn signal functions so the 12 volt circuit and brake output circuit won't even be used. So basically it does not matter if the center pin on the adapter is brakes or power. Also, the 6-Way on the tow lights can be opened up so you can change around the wire configuration if needed. Extension # HM47083 is an excellent choice as is # HM47085. I have linked a video review of the latter.

The Hopkins Adapter 7-Pole to 6-Pole # 47549 plugs into a vehicle side 7-way socket and converts that connector format to a 6-way round-pin type. If you think you will need some length for your connection, # HM47083 is an alternative that does the same thing but includes a coiled cable that is 3-feet long when stretched fully while the # 47549 is just the adapter portion without the extension cable. 47549 can be changed to allow a different function - trailer brakes - to be carried on...

  • Do Hopkins Trailer Wiring Adapters # HM47083 and # 47549 Do the Same Thing
Both of the Hopkins wiring adapters you referenced, parts # HM47083 and # 47549, will plug into a vehicle side 7-way socket and convert that connector format to a 6-way round-pin type. The main difference is that part # HM47083 includes a coiled cable that is 3-feet long when stretched fully while the # 47549 is just the adapter portion without the extension cable. Another difference is pin configuration. Usually 6-way connectors use the center pin for the trailer's 12V power feed. This...

These two adapters differ only in what the center pin is used for. If the center pin on your trailer side connector is for the electric brake signal, you will use # HM47085. If the center pin on the trailer connector is for 12-volt power, you will instead use # HM47083. One end of the adapter will plug into the 7-Way...

  • Trailer Brakes Do Not Work When Using 7-Way to 6-Way Adapter with a 2010 Chevy Silverado
The problem that you are experiencing is likely happening because there are 2 different ways to wire a 6-Way trailer connector. The brake output pin will wither be the center pin or it will be in the 2 oclock position, if looking at the face of the trailer side connector. Which ever one that it is, the other one would be the 12 volt circuit. Normally when this happens the trailer brakes will immediately lock up.
