Video Transcript for All About the Adapter 7 Pole to Cigarette

Hey guys, the Randy here at etrailer.com. You know customers often ask us how they can get 12 volt power at the back of their vehicle and there are a lot of different ways to do that. What we're looking at today, this is an adapter, this is going to go right into your 7 pole plug and it provides us with two 12 volt plugs that we can use for just about anything that we'd want. This is going to work out really well, whether you're camping, out on a picnic, tailgating or in an emergency situation, say one of our trailer tires here needed some air, a typical 12 volt compressor isn't going to reach all the way back there, but by putting this in the back of the vehicle, just going to slide right in, light comes on indicating we've got live 12 volt outlets right here, so we can plug whatever it is in and get that back to our trailer or maybe we're tailgating and we want our 12 volt cooler or 12 volt refrigerator hooked up.In camping situations it can be really nice to plug this into your vehicle, parked pretty close to the tent, and then just use an extension to go into your tent. Now, in whatever situation you're going to be using it in, you can power all kinds of accessories, we can even put a small inverter into this and charge up laptops, or we can charge up any kind of technology that uses a straight household style plugin or cell phones. I really don't like when I'm sitting on the tailgate somewhere, listening to the dogs around or whatever the case is having to get into my phone or into my car to grab my phone if it's on the charger and bring it back here, you can power refrigerators, you can power coolers if you're tailgating, if you're camping, you can use an extension to get 12 volt power into your tent. And this is going to eliminate the need for running any of those cords through the windows and leaving our window cracked or running them through our door jam and slamming our door on them, which can do damage, this gives us exactly what we need, right out here, where it's really accessible and easy to get to.

Overall this is a really nicely built plug, all the seams matched together really well, you can tell they took some time in designing it to make sure it was going to be a good, long lasting type of product. You'll see, it's only has two contexts, one is going to be for ground and the one up here in the one o'clock position, we turn it that way it'll be at one o'clock, that's going to be providing the power, so the best way to know whether you're going to have power at this rear plug, which is a question we get from quite a few customers like, "How do I know if my plug's powered with my keys off"Because we don't want to leave the key on to operate this. So it's at one o'clock pin located right up there at the top, if you just ground off to your bumper or something with a test light and touch it, if your keys off and your test light goes off, you've got power, if not, there is a work around for that, you can actually take the wire that comes off the back of that plug and cut it, do away with the old wire and run your new wire, using a couple of heat shrink butt connectors up to your battery, you want to be sure you go through a 40 amp breaker just so that breaker will protect everything involved in the circuit, but that'll give you constant power back here, so it's a pretty easy workaround. And in some situations you won't even have to do that, in a lot of the Chevy trucks like this one, the GMC trucks, you might just have to connect a wire up to your power center and other vehicles, maybe it's just a relay that needs to go in or a fuse that goes in, so some pretty simple solutions to have constant power back here if that's something you're after. When using this plug, we always recommend some dielectric grease, basically that keeps any moisture from getting in here and causing us issues with corrosion. Corrosion's generally the number one thing that's going to make something like this fail, so by putting that grease in there, you're going to prevent that from happening, you should have great service for a long time to come, gets great customer reviews, people have used this to solve all kinds of problems that they had and even after a year of service still works good, still doing what it needs to do, still giving me the power I want, so overall, it's a really, really good product. We're going to slide it in here, we've got a 12 volt air compressor just to give you an idea of how this is going to help us out, so we'll slide this in here as we do we want to make sure that catch on the door comes down behind that tab that sticks up, you can see that tab right there. So that's going to go in and we want that to come down and right behind it, that'll keep it from coming out and I'll grab that compressor and show you how it extends that range quite a bit. Here's one of those many situations where this could come in handy.

Assume we've got a 10 foot power cord and about a 10 foot hose on this compressor, if we we're to plug this set up there in the truck where we normally would, we wouldn't be able to get to our boat tires and maintain them or trailer tires, so just by plugging this in, it's going to give us the power we need, see the compressor's going to turn on and that'll give us the length to get back here and do maintenance in some of these situations where we otherwise wouldn't be able to.Something else I like about this one, versus some of the other ones that are available out there, is that we have the dual 12 volt outlets. There are several other types available that just have a single and while that would be handy to have as well, I don't think there's anything wrong with that, if you can have two available, why wouldn't you Overall, if you asked me if I'd own this, I definitely would, I'd have this around all the time, it could be extremely useful, maybe not all the time, but in the situations you need it, it be extremely handy. I could see out hanging out doing a picnic or something, having my phone charged into one side, my speaker charged in the other side and it basically gives me an unlimited music source, I wouldn't be searching for chargers, wouldn't be searching first back to plug it in and I wouldn't have to worry about cables and things running in and out of my door jams or windows, so think it could be a good solution in a lot of different situations, just be really handy to have..

I knew what I wanted to do- Be able to hook up my portable air pump to my truck cigarette lighter, but the cord of course wasn't long enough to reach to inflate my truck shock air bags. I couldn't find what I needed, but thankfully etrailer carries just the right adapter to accomplish the task from my trailer connection. Thankyou for the quick service at a decent price.

Works great for my 12v refrigerator in back of truck!

by:

great device

I have only one 120V outlet in the bed of my truck, but this allows an easy way to get a couple of 12V outlets in the rear too. Works well for inflating two stand-up paddle boards at once. Seems sturdy enough. Keyed so you can't plug it in wrong.

We bought this product to plug in our portable cooler. It is primarily plugged in the bed of my F250 King Ranch while towing my 37' travel trailer.
It works flawlessly and allows some flexibility to plug it into the sockets of either our vehicles keeping it out of the way.

Excellent purchase and a very reliable product! I recommend purchasing this if you have a device running off the battery power of your vehicle.

Perfect for my new Chevy 2500

This was a life saver. I have a wrench that has aligator clips and I need this to go into my trailer 7 plug adapter. I'm glad I was able to find. I was using other sites. Etrailer seems to have what I need. I will be coming back always. And you shipped very quickly.

Thanks,

Are you getting power when keys are out of ignition? What kinda truck you got?

Some trucks are wired to only have the power feed go hot when the key is in the on position, others are hot all the time. Newer GM trucks need to have a wire connected under the hood, and still other trucks need a fuse or a relay. What truck are you working with?

Product is great and met all my expectations. It's simple and works. Nice to have 2 12volt outlets that plug right into my 7 wire connector.

Great, works as advertised

by:

Product arrived in timely manner and packaging was not damaged.

It looks just like the item I ordered, but I have yet to try it out, as I have been ill last few days.

I bought this for the purpose of running a small 12v air compressor to fill my tires on my trailer. With this extra outlet in a more convenient location, it should do the trick.

by:

Product worked just as advertised. Stacy was wonderful solving the user error. I have a 2007 Silverado and "the adapter didn't work", so I tried it on the 2021 Explorer and "it didn't work." After watching the video and doing some internet searching, I realized I had to hook up a wire on the Chevy that was there, but not connected, and put in a fuse to get power to the plug.

by:

Great item, very useful for those wanting 12v power at the rear of their vehicle, just have to watch not to overload the capacity of the wires to the vehicle's plug.

by:

It works like it should. If you are a tent camper, this makes life easy. Buy a 20ft 12V extension cord or two and you won't have to leave the doors or windows open on your vehicle to access 12V power. Anything camping related that takes a 12V lighter style outlet goes in to it and makes life a little easier. A low cost convenience item that goes a long way.

by:

Excellent customer service. Item arrived on time.

by:

Plug works good and is small and compact. I was going to make my own plug, but the cost would have been more and overall size would have been alot bigger. I would also have had wires coming out of the plug that would bend and break over time storing it in the truck.

by:

Really cool adapter. Opens the door for many accessories. Ridiculously fast service. etrailer is a very good company to deal with.

by:

Works just like it says and always on when you plug it in!

Last use, still worked fine.

by:

Just what I wanted! Allows me to power items from my trailer hookup.

by:

Great doing business with them. Very he lpful.

by:

I have been ordering from etrailer for years and the service was good then and is even better, it works just as good on returns as sales. Just honest facts.

by:

It's great to have the option in the back of the truck.

by:

Very good for working on trailer connected to truck... VERY bright

by:

Perfect! Didn’t have to run extra wires to power my accessories in the back of my Gladiator!

by:

A very handy piece to have for both trailering and other travel situations.

by:

Only complaint is that my ignition must be on to get power to the adaptor. Not the fault of the adaptor, but limits its usefulness.

  • Do I Need To Wire the Cigarette Adapter Part Number 118019 For It To Work
The Adapter 7 Pole to Cigarette, part number 118019, plugs directly into your 7-way connector and does not require any further wiring. If the 7-way trailer connector on your vehicle is not pre-wired for 12 volt accessory function then you may need to run a wire from the battery, with a inline fuse holder, to the 12 volt accessory connection in your 7-way connector (see wiring link). This adapter provides two sources of 12 volt power for 12 volt cigarette lighter plug style accessories....

  • Can Adapter 7 Pole to Cigarette # 118019 Provide Constant 12V Power on a 2007 Ford Ranger
The Draw-Tite Adapter 7 Pole to Cigarette # 118019 that you referenced will stay hot as long as the 12V pin on your 7-Way stays hot when your 2007 Ford Ranger is off. You can simply test this by using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, and checking the pin in the 1 o'clock position on your 7-Way. Just check it when you have your Ranger off for any power. If there is power, then you are good to go! If your Ranger cuts the power to the 12V pin when it is off, then you will simply need...

  • How to Determine if 12 Volt Circuit has Power All the Time on 2012 Ram 1500 with Factory 7-Way
In order to determine if your trucks 7-Way connector has power on the 12 volt circuit with the key off, you will need to use a circuit tester such as # 3808 if you need one to test the pin in the 1:00 position. If it is hot all the time then the adapter # 118019 will also be hot all the time when plugged in. I checked the owners manual for the 2012 Ram 1500 and the 12 volt circuit is fused with a cartridge fuse at 40 amps. If you draw more than that through the trailer connector and/or...

  • 7-Way to Cigarette Lighter Adapter for Powering Air Compressor
Sounds like your air compressor is drawing more amperage than your adapter is rated for. A better adapter solution would be the part # 118019 which doesn't have the 10 amp restriction like your current adapter. If you check out the review video I attached for this adapter you can see our installer use it to power a similar air compressor as yours.
