4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the new connector wires may not match the color/function of your vehicle wires, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to determine the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've determined the matching functions, use quick-splice or butt connectors (sold separately) to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector.

The number 1 reason trailer wiring comes up faulty is a bad ground, so make sure your ground wire has a solid and clean connection to metal. To make this connection, you'll need a ring terminal and a self-tapping screw (sold separately).

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Quick Tips:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 1992 Chevy C/K Series 1500 Pickup Truck
It sounds like you have wiring that is connected to a third brake light like on a camper shell. What you will need to add a 4-Way flat trailer wiring connector to your 1992 Chevy C/K 1500 is the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118315. This harness just plugs in line with the tail light wiring on the truck, on the driver side rear frame rail near the bumper. I have included a link to the installation details for you. The wiring for a third brake light uses a dedicated brake light...

  • Why Does 2017 Jeep Renegade Require Custom Fit Trailer Wiring Harness
There's a couple reasons you'll have to install a custom trailer wiring kit for your 2017 Jeep Renegade and wouldn't be able to just hardwire in a 4-way. Mainly your taillight circuits on your Jeep aren't the right style for trailer wiring. You need to have the taillight circuits so that the stop and turn signals are on the same wire and then the running lights are on a different one. Also your vehicle taillights aren't rated for the extra amperage draw of trailer wiring so you need a kit...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver Recommendation for 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle
Although we do not have a custom fit hitch available for your 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle, I have a hitch that should work for you. Take a look at the Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C13701. This is a universal style hitch receiver that will fit frame widths of 18 inches to 51 inches and can be bolted or welded to the frame. Since the frame of a Chevelle is not 51 inches wide, you will need to make sure that you have enough clearance past the frame for the longer cross tube or the...

  • Easiest Way to Hook Up Trailer Lights for Double Towing
The easiest way to hook up the lighting is to use a junction box # 38656 along with 4-flat connector # 18172, which you can then mount using the brackets # 18144 and # 18140. Then you'll need to run the lights from your camper to the junction box and then to the 4-flat connector. Just to note, you are not going to be able to use the 7 way and the 4 flat at the same time.

  • Converting Separate Turn Signals and Brake Lights on a Motor Home to Combined to Use a Light Kit
I will be happy to help you out. The separate brake light circuit is going to have to be combined with the turn signals in order to use a light kit with a 4-Pole connector. There is a special converter for this, # RM-732. On the input side you will connect the right turn signal wire to the green lead, the left turn signal wire to the yellow lead, and the brake light wire to the red lead. The converter will properly combine the signals and on the output side you will have green for right...

  • Adapter for a 6-Way Round on a Harley Davidson Trike to a 4-Way Flat Trailer
It does not appear that any of the 6-Way to 4-Way adapters are going to work because of the unique pin out that is on the 6-Way on your 2013 Harley trike. You would essentially need to make an adapter to match the pin out. You will need a trailer side 6-Way, # PK11604, and a vehicle side 4-Way, # 18172, cut to the length you need. Then you just attach the wires in the right place to match the 6-Way you have. On the 4-Way end the white wire is ground, yellow is left turn and stop, green...

  • Using Ford LED Hitch Cover on a 2014 Ford Focus when Flat Towing and When Driving
Since you are towing the Focus behind the RV, you would not use wiring harness # 118549 for that purpose. This harness would be used for the Focus to tow a trailer and not to tow the Focus with the motor home. I do understand what you are trying to accomplish though and why you selected that harness; the Ford LED hitch cover # CR-017F has to plug into something! But if you want to use the cover all of the time and not just when flat towing the Focus you will need to have the wiring harness...

You could put together an adapter using part # PK11501 and part # 18172 for the 5 pin round/4-Way Flat connection that you need. For the 2 female - 5 pin round connectors, you'll need part # PK11502 This 5-pole socket will connect your trailer to tow vehicle. The female/male terminology can be a bit confusing because of the pins in this connector. Part # PK11502 is actually an industry standard female connector because part # PK11501 plugs into it.
